Nothing to complain about, especially as we were just coming off the National Mall looking for food. No dress code - people come as they are. For smaller parties you can check out the 3 bars they have, especially if there is a wait for a table. Ask for directions before wandering around, though. Service was efficient but since we were seated in a bar area closer to the raw bar, we didn't get refills of water or get checked in on much, which we were fine with. Ambiance is old elegance with many things to look at on the walls and around the rooms. We were super happy with our Maryland crab soup (not a chowder) and clam chowder. Oh my gosh, this place is fantastic! It was only a block or two from the White House and it has such a cool vibe. The booths have hooks on the end for your coat and the seats are velvet; they have some patriotic murals on the walls and I just loved it. (They had some unusual stuffed animal heads at the beautiful bar, including a boar, I think an oryx, and a walrus. I can't say for sure if that one is real haha) We came a bit later on the morning on a Sunday, in time for brunch. Our server was such a sweetheart!! Stick to the classics. They have a few staple dishes that they've been doing for a while, if you've been here before and like something form the menu just order that. While planning our trip here the past few months, everything I read about dining in DC led me to this restaurant. It was hard to get a reservation the week we arrived but at 5pm, we sat down to what I was hoping would be a fabulous meal! We arrived to a packed waiting area and a group of the nicest gentleman hosts. I asked for a booth and agreed to wait a little longer. About 15 minutes passed and we were sat just as Zheng greeted us with ice water. She read the specials, asked about dietary restrictions, gave us time to look over the menu and brought our drinks and fresh bread/butter. The butter is whipped with sea salt and the best way to start any meal. The bread was warm, soft inside but crispy outside. Truly perfect! I may have eaten half the loaf myself. Not sorry! Our server wasn't overly social but was friendly and very efficient. I ordered the steak frites with a mouth watering shallot Dijon cream sauce. This meal was why I wanted to dine here. My steak was cooked perfectly, the fries were crispy, salty and paired perfectly with that sauce! Oh the sauce!! Hubby ordered a crab cake sandwich & half Caesar which he said was great! Three of us were seated immediately without reservation. Service was quick and attentive. Both Manhattan and New England clam chowder was delicious. Home made linguine with clams had so much clams compared to other restaurants. It was great except that it had a little bit of sand. This was one of our favorite dining experiences while in DC! My husband and I went to quite a few of the online recommended establishments during our week long visit. By the end of our trip, we lowered our expectations because so many of the restaurants we visited were so underwhelming. Old Ebbitt Grill was the exception! Everything was excellent! The restaurant is beautiful, service was excellent, the food was delicious, the prices were reasonable. This is the one place we would definitely revisit the next time in town! We ordered Mussells - probably the best we've ever had! My husband ordered the crab cake - he said it was ALL crab and no filler. Also the best he's ever had! I ordered the Spicy Sausage Garganelli. I wished I hadn't eaten so much of the fresh, warm bread and butter because I could hardly eat half of the pasta! We also had a couple of the Zero Proof drinks. We were on our way to lunch somewhere else when someone recommended this place, so we switched our plans and came here. So glad we did! Love the decor - the place has been around since 1856, I think. Rich history there for sure. My friend had the scallops and I had the ribeye. It was AMAZING! I have celiac disease, so I cannot have any gluten, and they were very careful with my dishes, that was round one. Later on that evening, we were looking for someplace to grab a drink. Not many places were open late night Monday, so my friend suggested to go grab dessert and a drink back here. Again so delicious! We both had espresso martinis, made by Ramon (I think) as we sat at the bar. My friend had the Keylime pie and I had the flourless chocolate cake. So decadent! After eating lunch around the corner at another place where the hostess treated us less than stellar, we figured we would just come back for one more dinner. First time I got the pork chop and my friend got the crabcake sandwich. She said hers was delicious. My pork chop was juicy and flavorful. And of course we had to finish it off with it. Another round of dessert. Three times here in two days really says something for the establishment. Would highly recommend! They get busy so if they take reservations, that might be the way to go. Or sit at the bar if there's room... Lots of interesting people come and go in this area. The service all three times was fantastic! If you don't have a reservation, you can likely find a spot at one of the bars. I had an Optimal Whit beer and a vegetarian sandwich. The service was good at the bar. The sandwich was okay. Overall, this restaurant was an excellent spot with a classy old Victorian vibe that wasn't too formal. The service was excellent and very personalized. The food was truly outstanding and they're known for their seafood staples. This place is a little pricey and I'd caution about eating too much unless you want to splurge. They have dedicated areas for large events, and a separate Cabinet room for private dining groups. Ambiance: A unique restaurant with an old school Victorian design with ambient soft lighting. A midway point between formal and business casual as they have a bar area with TVs on various channels, but long-hair carpeted flooring, velvet cloth upholstery, and coat racks at the entrance and each table. It is a taste of historical high class dining without having to pay egregious prices per diner. Food: The food was absolutely outstanding. We had two appetizers and four entrees and four separate desserts. For appetizers we had Fried oyster deviled eggs and fries Rhode island calamari. For entrees I had the flash fried Parmesan trout with potatoes and beans. The trout was flash fried so it was crispy, fragrant, yet juicy and tender. Once you cut the fried layer, the meat almost fell apart from a light prodding from the fork. The Parmesan sauce was light, but added a rich layer to the fish and gave the meat weight since white fish is often fairly light. The potatoes were also lightly fresh and crispy without being too mushy despite being thick chunks that burn easily or are hard to cook fully. Finally the green beans were wonderfully stir-fried and very lightly salted which was a nice pairing for the fried parts of the dish. We also ordered a bone in pork chop with a chimichurri garnish that was perfectly cooked to a light medium despite the cut being 1.5-2in thick. The cut was tender, juicy, and lightly fatty to make for a rich, meaty bite. It came with lightly stir fried kale and bacon that was absolutely stunning. The impact of the flavor from the bacon and salt from the first bite of vegetables was incredible and left a lasting after taste for us to savor. We also ordered a spicy marg sausage penne pasta that was smothered in sausage cheese. It was, and I paraphrase, 'coma inducing'. Unfortunately, I didn't taste it for myself and can't comment further. The final entree we had was the oyster burger. It was incredibly juicy and cooked to a perfect medium, the buns were very lightly toasted with a light layer of butter and created a delicious fragrance. Furthermore, the oysters did not leave any fishy scent either. Regarding the desserts, we ordered the vanilla bean pavlova, the peanut butter pie, the hot fudge brownie sundae, and the chocolate chip bread pudding. The peanut butter pie tasted like a Reese's peanut butter cup with cream. However, it was overall much lighter, so you can easily eat more in one sitting. It had a thick middle layer of peanut butter flavored mousse and a tasty cookie bottom that wasn't too dense or difficult to cut through with a spoon and sprinkled with a light coating of chocolate shavings. Like a peanut butter cup that is both on steroids and more mellow. The hot fudge brownie sundae was classic and we had no complaints about it. The chocolate chip bread pudding was fairly interesting. It came with two scoops of vanilla ice cream on top that paired very well with the soft and spongy bread pudding. There were small chocolate chips in it that blended well with the vanilla ice cream for another blend of the classic chocolate-vanilla flavor mix! It was an absolute classic and stood out among the three as the most delicious. However I think the truly unique dessert and most desirable of the four we had was the vanilla bean pavlova. It looks like a lemon curd topped with a light layer of whipped cream and surrounded by chilled blueberries. The lemon curd was lightly sour, not overpowering, and had a wonderful fragrance to it. Interestingly, it wasn't particularly sweet. Most of the sweetness came from what appeared to be whipped cream, but I think was actually sweetened, whipped egg whites that have been lightly heated and then chilled to create a texture akin to a denser marshmallow. Pair with blueberries, it created a fragrant, lightly sour, sweet, tart, and lightly fluffy dessert unlike any other dessert I've ever had. Price: It was on the pricier side with most entrees ranging from $25-35. However, certain special entrees, such as the Angus ribeye, range from $45-60. Expect to spend $35-50 per person excluding drinks and raw seafood. Service: The service is absolutely outstanding. They were very friendly, very professional, and the service was very personalized. They were careful and considerate of anyone with allergies, though no one in our group had allergies. Our waiter was also quick to make adjustments for any requests that we had. First of all, I would recommend making reservations for the restaurant. It can get very busy even in the middle of the week. When I arrived for my reservation, I was a little bit early, but they got me in right away. They gave me a very nice booth in the main room. There are a lot of excellent paintings and artwork throughout the restaurant. I ordered the filet mignon and the ribeye, both of which were cooked very well and were very delicious. This is the oldest saloon in Washington DC. And the interior reflects the time. The server was fantastic and was very attentive to our table. It was a very good meal for a very reasonable price for this type of restaurant. Definitely five stars for the food, ambience and service. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in the Washington DC area. It is about a block away from the White House. read more

Came in at around 5 pm on a Saturday and seated in about 5 min with no reservation. The Riding Off My Coattails cocktail is surprisingly strong and barely tastes like alcohol. Service was quick and friendly, and it's super cute in here. The trout wasn't what I expected but was very tasty. The potatoes could've used a little more seasoning in my opinion but were still good. Working in DC this past weekend I knew I'd find some good food. Right across the street from the White House I stumbled across old ebbitt grill. The place has a very welcoming vibe to it. It's classy and the interior is amazing to say the least. I walked over to the bar and ordered a drink and a burger that would change my life, the oyster riot burger! The bar tender was very respectful and super attentive. He said my food would be ready in about 15 minutes and he'd call my name when it's ready. Before I even got half way through my drink my food was ready. The burger had such a unique taste. The oysters were amazing and all the ingredients blended so well together. The patty was cooked to perfection with a beautiful pink center. I had forgotten about my drink and gave my full attention to the burger. The fries that came with the burger were spot on as well. Oh my goodness, what a great place! A group of 3 of us arrived around 1:30 on a Friday afternoon, and there wasn't a table to be had. thankfully, we scored three seats at the first bar on the right. The staff was knowledgeable about the food and drinks, calm and organized in the face of a hectic lunch crowd, and engaging with the customers. My order was the oyster riot burger, almost 7 ounces of fresh beef cooked a perfect medium topped with fried oysters and a bistro remoulade sauce, with iceberg lettuce, tomato, pickled red onions, and horseradish on a sesame bun. I wouldn't have changed a thing with. Fresh veggies, soft roll, a touch of heat with the horseradish, juicy beef, crispy oysters. Even the side mixed green salad was really good with romaine, tiny tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, roasted seeds. The lemon basil vinaigrette was marvelous, the basil was quite strong. I bet it would taste amazing on a Caprese salad or sandwich. For $19 in downtown DC, you can't complain. Unfortunately, there is an additional surcharge, which isn't ideal, hopefully it's temporary. read more

I don't get why this restaurant has the reputation it has. Cramped and expensive, while the food is decidedly mediocre. (This is a pet peeve of mine, so take from this what you will, but I could tell my entree had a bunch of sugar in it. Came here after Black Pride in DC. Haven't been in years but babyyyyy the foood is the same. I got the crab and artichoke dip which was so filling and flavorful. The Buffalo wings were so good and had a kick to them. It came with celery and blue cheese which won me over lol. The side salad and crab cake with roasted potatoes was also perfect.
