I eat a lot of BBQ and this one slaps. Be warned, the sandwiches are huge (like a hoagie roll size), wife and I could have split. The meats all had good flavor, sausage was a particular favorite of mine. We were meeting locals again and Blanco was about halfway in between. We visit this area often because we have family in the area. The mac'n cheese was good and so were the beans. The creamed corn was absolutely delicious. There were four of us and we each gave an opinion on our own lunch. One person rated the ribs at a 3 1/2. Another person rated their brisket sandwich at 3 with a comment that she preferred a thinner cut and more bark. We all have our own personal preferences. Thank goodness we like different things and tastes. My spouse and I split 1/2 pound of sliced brisket. I was surprised that the brisket wasn't warm. It was rather cool. Then, when I put the bbq sauce on it, it was really cool. Maybe we're spoiled but rarely had cold brisket at a restaurant. The brisket was good but I didn't feel it deserved more than 3 stars. It was smoky and I love a smoky brisket but I also would have preferred more bark and warm. The sweet bbq sauce didn't seem too spicy this time and the brisket wasn't tough as it was before but it was lacking the bark. Yelp is all about folks expressing their personal opinion. I understand the pitmaster is very passionate about his brisket as he should be. He commented to a previous review that is listed below. I had to make a quick trip into Blanco with my sister- in- law. So we made a lunch stop at Old 300. Ladd was there and served up a delicious meal. We got brisket (obviously) and a side of fried okra. The food was ready pretty quick and then we were on the road. First let me say that the okra was she off the best I've had at a restaurant. It tasted fresh and was hot and crispy! Now for the best part. The brisket. It was AMAZING! Tender, juicy and cooked perfectly. The smoke flavor came out in each bite. It was so flavor that you dint need bbq sauce... but if you want some, they have a delicious selection. If you're out and looking for a terrific bbq joint, stop here and look no further. A quick peek on Yelp showed some great reviews so we decided to stop in and fill our bellies with brisket and cobbler. The reviews for this place are spot on: Old 300 is some damn good BBQ! We ordered a pound of the moist brisket, side of creamed corn, and the pecan cobbler. The brisket had the perfect blend of flavor without too much smokiness. The slices were thick and juicy and you could taste the rub which had the right amount of seasoning. They have two types of BBQ sauce: one sweet, one tangy. The lady working there suggested we mix the two and it proved to be an excellent choice. They had 2 types of pickles to choose from and the onions were pickled as well, which we enjoyed more than the standard raw slices. The creamed corn was my favorite I've found so far in San Antonio. It's thicker than most but the flavor is outstanding. The pecan cobbler was also a great choice. It tasted like pecan pie in a cup. I don't need any distractions when it comes to pie or cake but my fiancee had to have a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Since I love him I agreed and have to admit it was a good distraction. The ribs are very good, and the sausage is great. Dry rub on the ribs is good enough you can skip the mediocre sauces (they are okay, but nothing spectacular). Potato salad is fair, but again not spectacular. Just focus on the meat (that's why you're here anyway, right). If you like dessert (I don't, but I had a couple of bites), the cheesecake with a wine and mixed berry sauce is pretty good, too. This is a terrific place to sit and enjoy some really good BBQ. Very casual, dining with locals and tourists. The staff is always very friendly. Place your order as you walk in and a "runner" brings to your table. Good menu with normal BBQ fare, ribs, brisket, smoked Turkey, plates or chopped sandwiches. Good sides of home cooked beans, Mac n cheese that is wonderful, coleslaw, fried okra which I'd my favorite, fries etc. This brisket is our favorite. Holy cow! And pig! My husband and I both grew up in Texas eating all kinds of yummy bbq, so when I say we are 'bbq snobs', I mean we have tried it all...or so we thought. We stumbled on this place while traveling through from DFW to SA, and had no idea what we had found until we got inside and saw their very impressive menu. Still skeptical, we ordered two of their specialty sandwiches and hoped for the best. That's exactly what we got. The best! Their sandwiches are HUGE and loaded with some seriously tasty meats, including brisket, jalapeño sausage, turkey...even sliced pork which is something we very rarely come across. Every single meat was absolutely delicious, tender, juicy and flavorful. The bread (a hoagie style bun) was amazing as well. We enjoyed every bite of what we could fit in our stomachs and took the rest home for another meal. The side of fries were not needed, but man were they good! We had to finish up with their blackberry cobbler a-la-mode just to make sure we landed in the food coma zone! The service was excellent as well which completed our amazing experience here. I really liked the ambiance here, the friendly service, and the broad selection. All items are ala carte but I have experienced this at other bbq places so it was less of a surprise there is no "basket" or "plate" option. I found the sausage to be flavorful and juicy, the sides standard fare, and the brisket a bit underwhelming. I love brisket. Good brisket can be enjoyed at any temperature short of frozen, with a deep smoke ring, good bark, moist interior, and a consistent flavor profile, either from the smoke, a rub, or both. The flavor of my sliced brisket was very inconsistent. Two bites out of the total were delicious and had a bold seasoning that paired well with the natural beef flavor and yet those were anomalies. I would be willing to try dining here again, if nothing else because the slaw was so fresh and well made and I really enjoyed the rest of the dining experience in spite of the brisket disappointment. read more

TLDR: Excellent Texas BBQ, definitely worth a trip. If you look through my reviews, I eat waaay too much BBQ. To the point that I've stood in line at LA BBQ an hour early to catch them at open, and I do a twice-annual pilgrimage to Lexington to take in Snow's best. And to my amazement, this place muscled its way into my 'Top 5'. I say 'amazement' because I've never heard 'Blanco' and 'awesome BBQ' said in the same sentence. Yet after a nice morning spent driving into the heart of hill country and trail riding, the Old 300 appeared like a welcoming mirage before my car's windshield. For starters, I appreciate the setting. The inside is no-nonsense and free of pretense, the way BBQ restaurants should be. But it's not so hardscrabble that it looks like it's going to fall down, like some places. I like the view of the town hall across the way, the individual chairs (I'm not much for family-sized benches), and the fact that they bring the food to you. Ah, but what about the food? I tried three of the top-rated entrees and came away impressed. The brisket, normally the crown jewel of Texas BBQ, was very good. Nice bark, moderate amount of smoky flavor, though a bit too lean for when I asked for 'fatty' brisket. The flavor's fine, but it does cry out for a dash of the house BBQ sauce. If I was just ranking the brisket, I'd give it a solid four stars - good but not mouth-watering great. However, the pork ribs and the smoked chicken are on a par with the best I've had, chock full of juiciness and fork-able tender meat. I'd make the journey back for the half-chicken alone for the smoke flavor that permeates the white and black meat. Be sure to get yourself a rack of the ribs as well - they've got a perfect peppery note. Alas, I only had room amongst the sides and desserts for a little potato salad. But what I had was superb German-style salad with a welcome dash of mustard. I'd happily have that salad alongside a NYC-style Reuben. Definitely worth a visit for BBQ aficionados. This place scores a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. 4.25 stars. There is such a wide assortment of reviews for Old 300, and I really didn't know what to expect. However, the promise of Akaushi brisket was strong, and I committed to the one hour drive in search of BBQ nirvana. The short of it? The pork ribs paired with their sweet sauce is absolutely outstanding. I would venture to say that sauce is the closest rendition to what one would find paired with pork ribs in Deep South states like Alabama and Tennessee. I strongly considered buying a bottle. Also memorable is the creamed corn and the Akaushi brisket. The creamed corn has a nice peppery coating and the Akaushi brisket is very flavorful though purists might balk as the presentation is somewhat dissimilar. The sausage was okay and I would pass on the green beans. But wow, when Old 300 hits, it's a home run. I think I may have preferred Old 300 to Black Board BBQ which is one hell of a compliment given that the latter is excellent in its own right. Finally, Old 300 is kind of pet friendly. Dogs aren't allowed inside the restaurant but they have a nice covered patio, fans and water bowls for our four legged friends. Ridley also enjoyed some nice pieces of BBQ. I think she liked the Akaushi brisket the most. What a spoiled little puppy. In any event, Old 300 is very enjoyable and a fine addition to the number of excellent BBQ joints one can find in the Hill Country. I'd seek it out again on a road trip to Blanco. read more

Been wanting to try Old 300 for awhile as my family (denoted as Walker on the wall) is part of Texas history. The Old Three Hundred was the 297 grantees, made up of families and some partnerships of unmarried men, who purchased 307 parcels of land from Stephen Fuller Austin and established a colony that encompassed an area that ran from the Gulf of Mexico on the south, to near present-day Jones Creek, Brazoria county Texas, Brenham in Washington County, Texas, Navasota in Grimes County, and La Grange in Fayette County. Moses Austin was the original empresario of the Old Three Hundred and was succeeded by his son, Stephen F. Austin, after his untimely death (wikipedia). While my mom can tell you all about the ol' family tree; I'm here to tell you about the BBQ! On a recent Friday, I drove over from Driftwood to Wimberley to pick up a buddy. Some nice back roads in my bright yellow convertible headed towards the square in Blanco, Texas. First impressions of the restaurant space upon arrival is rustic with an emphasis on re-purposing old for modern use. Cool beer coolers line the entry way heading towards the counter. Galvanized tubs as sinks in the restrooms complete with river rocks in the bottom. They also boast the six flags that Texas (Spain, France Mexico, Republic of Texas, United States, and the Confederate States of America) has flown on the wall. So far this place has provided a unique history lesson; let's see if they can cook! I thought Salt Lick's Turkey Sandwich was the biggest I would ever eat in a BBQ setting. Move over SL; now there is something meatier! The self proclaimed "cure for the munchies" Willie Nelson was near ALL the meats on a beautifully toasted hoagie roll. Start with a 1/2 lb of Angus brisket sliced to my specs. Add in a 1/3 lb of delicious pork loin with the perfect amount of smoke. If that wasn't enough its topped with 1/4 lb of sliced sausage! They weren't joking about the suggested to-go box that's in the menu description. I sampled a few bites of each meat along with the bun and called it. Buddy and I shared some fried okra as our side with stellar results as well. Both sauce options are decent; marinated onions left over from previous tenant Riley's along with two different pickles to choose from. We ended our meal with some banana pudding. Who knew Shiner Bock goes great with dessert! For Blanco, this restaurant is miles above the norm. Some additional advice on local dining scene; I highly recommend Chess Club for breakfast. Second would be the Bowling Alley for your traditional "greasy spoon" type place where the local liars club meets every morning. Lunch and dinner I have to give to Old 300.
