This is a very nice, shiny "Texas-y" establishment selling mid Texas-style BBQ. We came here for the first time on 08.19.26 for an early dinner. The bartender who served us our wines acted a little off put to have been bothered. She gave me a very brief but trying explanation of their wine selection. Two small pours of wine: $34. My mom went with the daily special: Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas. I went with a two meat plate with chicken and turkey. Green beans and potato salad on the side. The food came out quickly and it was hot. My mom's enchiladas were stuffed full of chicken and looked good. She liked them enough. My plate was just ok. The turkey and chicken weren't bad - juicy and tasty enough. The green beans and potato salad weren't bad. Tasted like something you would get at a church barbecue. The fixings area was okay - stocked with pickles, jalapeños, and weirdly cut chunks of onion. The menu is very extensive, but lacks explanations of the uncommon offerings. There isn't any more menu guidance on the website, either. What comes on the nachos? What comes on the combo sandwiches or flatbreads? Spent the day at Fredericksburg. On my way home I stopped at Pig Pen barbecue for a late lunch / snack. I ordered half a pound of pork ribs and a small coleslaw. The pork ribs half a pound was four ribs and my total bill was about $20.00. The place is very clean, very nice big beautiful tables. Outside. they have a huge patio and play area for the kids. Very very nice. Looks like the have a bar area outside too. Parking lot is huge. Plenty of places to park. I was handed a buzzer after I placed my order and just a few short minutes my buzzer went off and I went up to get my tray of ribs and coleslaw. I found a place to sit that was kind of away from everyone and they had the movie Die Hard playing on the TV. Food was really good. The ribs were sweet and meaty. Good coleslaw. Great outside atmosphere. I was worried about the service from a previous review and they were spot on in the review. The cashiers didn't care at all about customer service and my boyfriend likes to ask for recommendations and the girl was very bothered that he even asked a question. The menu does not say anything about what is on the items. I got a tater with meat and it had cheese, sour cream which was all over the brisket which I can't eat sour cream. So I had to throw out half my meat. In hindsight, maybe I should have asked but at other bbq places, it's just cheese and butter. The brisket was slightly dry but not horrible. The jalapeño sausage was good and none of the stuff that says Jalapeño was hot. The Mac and cheese was just soupy pasta. The brisket taco was good with a large portion in it. The bbq sauce was basic. Mixed review for Pig Pen coming up. We stopped by on our way home from Fredericksburg and were craving BBQ. Yelp reviews showed a 4.5 rating, which sold us on the place. Pig Pen has a large patio area that would be a great spot to dine when the weather cooperates. There is also a play area for the kiddos. Inside dining is high tops and picnic tables. You order at the counter, and I thought it was unusual to have BBQ and TexMex on the menu. It must work as they have been in business for a while. There is also a full bar with cocktail specials. We ordered ribs and brisket. The ribs were smoked, tug off the bone, perfect. No BBQ sauce was needed as their dry rub perfectly complemented the pork ribs. The brisket was Meh. It was dry and needed BBQ sauce to moisten it up. Their BBQ sauce is really good, a tad spicy, and really not that sweet. We have passed Pig Pen a number of times on a way to and from Fredericksburg on this trip we were craving BBQ and based on Yelp reviews we decided to give em a try. Pig Pen has a large outside play area and bar and a number of family style picnic tables and high-tops inside. They also have a full bar where you order separately. We ordered the pork ribs and brisket with beans and twice baked potato salad sides. The ribs were off the charts delicious. They had a nice bark and were pull of the bone tender. Their dry rub was a perfect seasoning. It would have been a felony to add BBQ sauce to these ribs. Our brisket was OK. Not sure if it was an off day but we found the brisket to be dry. This is where their BBQ sauce saved the day. The sauce is just wonderful, not to sweet or spicy and it moistened up our brisket. The beans and potato salad were excellent sides. We will definitely return to further sample their smoked meats. They also offer a TexMex menu which I found unusual but hey they have been doing this for 20 years so it must be AOK. Lastly, their is signage that indicates an Austin, food truck, location. That location has closed. read more

Stopped at Pig Pen BBQ for lunch. What a fun place! You order at the counter and find a seat (inside or out). They will deliver your food. There's also a full bar inside! I had a frozen margarita and it was very good. Outside has a "play" area for kids and adults and you can relax and enjoy your food. We had the brisket sandwich and pulled pork sandwich. I'd been wanting to try this place for months. After finally going on a Friday night, I can confidently say it was a complete waste of time--and one of the most frustrating dining experiences I've had in a long time. Let's start with the cashier. A high school-aged guy who couldn't have made it clearer that helping customers--especially disabled ones--was beneath him (I'm using my residual vision to see you, Mr. Curly Blond Boy). My friend and I are both visually impaired, so we asked a few simple, reasonable questions about the menu since we couldn't read the board. Instead of answering, he repeatedly pointed at it like that magically made it visible to us. We explained. We asked again. He still refused to actually help. This wasn't just bad service--it was an outright failure to provide even the most basic level of accessibility or human decency. Ordering turned into a ridiculous guessing game. Items were out, but instead of clearly communicating that, he made us drag the information out of him piece by piece. At one point, when we asked for mac and cheese and greens, he said, "We don't have that," and just... stopped. No clarification. No effort. We were left to guess which item he meant. That's not quirky or busy--that's lazy and dismissive. The food didn't come close to making up for it. The sausage and turkey were fine, though the sausage had jalapeño with zero warning--apparently transparency isn't a thing here. The brisket was so dry it was essentially inedible. The mac and cheese had decent flavor, but the pasta was cooked into complete mush and again the secret jalapeño zing was added. It's hard to overstate how unacceptable this experience was. When a business can't be bothered to answer basic questions or make even minimal accommodations for visually impaired customers, that's not just poor service--that's exclusionary. The place was not quirky, iconic, or appealing in any way. The decor was as generic as the food and service. It looks like they had a nice outdoor area, but we couldn't find a way out there to check it out. Apparently there was also a bar, but we didn't know it. We were given to cups to which we added water from the soda fountain. There are too many great BBQ spots out there to spend your time and money at one that treats accessibility like an inconvenience and customers like a burden. I won't be back. read more

After landing at Austin airport and driving towards Fredericksburg, I was craving some good ol' fashion Texan ribs. This place did not disappoint. When I politely asked to check my order to make sure everything was correct, one of the staff members folded her arms, rolled her eyes, and said, "If you must." That level of attitude was completely unnecessary. When I got home, I realized I hadn't been given any BBQ sauce--not even asked if I wanted some. For a BBQ place, that's a pretty big miss. To top it off, I was charged a $1.12 "Transaction Fee" that was never mentioned or explained. My total came to $40.44, which feels steep for what I got, especially considering the service. I don't have enough good things to say about this new location of Pig Pen BBQ. The original in Dripping Springs is a family favorite of ours, and the food is DELICIOUS. This location really brings together the fact that BBQ is a family affair. There is a huge playscape area for the kiddos to play, a bar to keep the adults indulged, and plenty of delicious vittles to satisfy anyone's tastes. We ordered the Brisket (burnt ends and moist pieces), Cheddar Jalapeno Sausage, Piggy Tails (which we ate most of prior to my photo, sorry), Baked Potato Salad, and Barbacoa Taco. The brisket was absolutely the pieces we ordered, some delicious and toasty burnt ends and delightfully moist and flavorful cuts... the rub is ever so slightly sweet and filled with flavor. The piggy tails are a must have... delightfully spiced and candied bacon (can you blame us for eating most of them before taking a picture?). The Cheddar Jalapeno Sausage has a delectable bite from the casing and it's not overly spicy.. it has the flavor of Jalapeno which is great! The Baked potato salad is one of our absolute favorite sides... it reminds me of what grandma would cook for a homestyle BBQ... the kind of food that sticks to your bones. It's just so good, definitely try it! I also enjoyed a frozen Jack Daniels... and on this hot day, I can't even describe to you how delightful that was! Had 2 sliced brisket sandwich combos. Each came with a side and a drink. The drink was "free" according to the order taker. Cracked us up. You order at the counter, sit down, and pick up your food when paged, and self serve soda. Location was clean. The main building had ample seating and full bar. Good ambiance all around. The inside table benches are very high though. I'm 5'6" with normal length legs and I could not place my feet on the floor just my toes touched. My husband is 5' 10" and also noticed they were higher than normal and pointed out that others nearby couldn't plant their feet either. This location has fantastic outdoor seating, an auxiliary bar, and astroturf grass and play houses for the kids to entertain themselves with. The bark on the brisket was extremely salty. The body of the brisket was good though. The sandwiches are served traditional style without BBQ sauce. The sauce was average but good average. The charro beans were the best I've had in a long time. The coleslaw was excellent but it is southern style - no mayo but sweet and vinegary. Unfortunately, had to rate it a 3 because the bark on both sandwiches was extremely salty and, since this is a BBQ joint, meat is the main attraction. Also the benches were a bit unnerving. All things said I would go back because I would hope the salt situation was a one-off issue and rest of the meal and ambiance (minus the benches) is deserving of a repeat visit. read more
