    Brisket nachos.

This place is pretty legit. They serve a good amount of food and the quality is good. The staff was mildly friendly. Originally one staff seemed annoyed that we took a bit of time to order and asked a few questions but ended up thanking us for the business and have a good day. I would classify the bbq as average. It's probably not going to win any awards but will happily settle any bbq urge you have. If you are in the Austin area I would say it's easily on par with Rudys and Smokey Moes. Inside they have a few tables and have a few fun little games to keep you occupied like tic tac toe and others which is great for kids - and adults. The brisket nachos were pretty good, I do wish they used a different cheese other than "ballpark" nacho cheese. A queso blanco would be awesome. While the cheese isn't gross as true ballpark queso, I think they can do better. The way they served the ice was pretty gross. It was a container of ice sitting out and a scooper that is used to get the ice out sitting on top of the ice. So, yeah.... You open the containers lid, grab the scooper in the ice, get some ice, and lay the scooper back in the ice and replace the lid. I mean pre Covid, that's even gross. But with Covid I think they could replace this. Anyway, no ice for me. Luckily the tea had a bunch of ice in it. Hopefully, it didn't use the same scooper.

We were in the mood for bbq today so finally tried this place out. When you first walk in you get the impression of a family owned place, which we like. You place your order at the register and pay while the other person gets your food together. The staff was friendly but seemed understaffed. We each ordered the 2 meat combo with 1 rib each. We tried the chicken, jalapeño sausage, regular sausage and brisket. We also had the jalapeño popper, jalapeño creamed corn, pinto beans and garlic mashed potatoes. The chicken was the highlight of the plate. It was flavorful. We ended up getting the sauce on the side which was good. Both types of sausage were ok, but nothing remarkable. The brisket was dry. The ribs unfortunately were soaked in sauce when we had ordered them without, so it was soggy and very unappealing. The rib was very salty. The mashed potatoes and jalapeño popper were the most flavorful sides. The pinto beans and corn lacked flavor.

Oh wow; OH WOW. Austin BBQ has a real serious competitor, and it's in Marble Falls. We spent several fun hours at Sweet Berry Farms and decided to stop by Holy Smokes because of their good reviews. A small bbq place with no lines and no hype? What could they possibly offer that would be on the same page as Rudy's brisket or Franklin's ribs? A lot. Walking in around 2pm, there were only two other parties here. We were a party of four so we elected to share the Ribs, Brisket, and Sausage. Our first "mistake" was getting a full rack of ribs. This ain't your chain restaurant definition of full rack of ribs. This full rack is gigantic! Sure we had other meats to get through, but the four of us were only able to take down half of it. Now let's get to what matters: the taste. The spare ribs definitely ranks in my top two best tasting, most tender ribs I've ever had (probably my #1 to be honest). It comes with a sweet sauce drizzled on top and although I'm not a fan of sauce, it really compliments the meat very well without overpowering it. So so tender! It was honestly not feasible to transfer a rib to your plate without the meat sliding off the bone and splitting into five pieces. You'll need two forks and steady hands for this job. Their brisket was also really good. On par with Rudy's brisket, but my one complaint is that a lot of the slices were either too lean or consisted of 80% or more fat. Extremely full at the end. They advertised huge portions and that's exactly what we got. Got our leftovers for dinner that night. The staff was excellent as well. They made sure we had everything we needed, and the owner even came out and asked about the food. If you're a fan of ribs and in Marble Falls, stop by Holy Smokes cause it'll change your life. You'll remember that day forever.

Wow! This is just some damn good BBQ! The brisket was tender and tasty, just the right amount of dry rub to make sure the natural flavor comes alive. The ribs were moist and tasty with a sauce that wasn't overwhelming or too sweet and fell right off the bone. The chicken - WOW THE CHICKEN! - white meat that was so moist and tender and so full of flavor. I'm not usually a white meat gal, but this was just beyond scrumptious. The sausage was yummy, too. I also am not a fan of sausage usually, but holy smokes it was yummy. (See what I did there?...) The potato salad was tasty, but I'd love it even more with just a bit more dill. I mixed the Mustang Lemonade and Unsweet tea to make the perfect liquid concoction for my plate. All in all, this was completely worth the drive and I'll be telling friends and coming back again. Thanks, Holy Smokes!, for the fantastic lunch.

6/3/2020 It was okay, service was friendly though you could tell we weren't regulars. The food was just good; nothing was super flavorful or really that hot. The turkey was nice and juicy and the sausage had a nice crunch to the skin. There were flies EVERYWHERE! I'm not just talking about we're in the south level but way worse. The fact that they handed out a flyswatter to a customer nearby who asked for it was just kind of off putting to me. It quenched a BBQ craving while we were in town, but I realistically won't be back.

Operating since 1999, they have perfected the art of pit smoking and how to quickly move you from their entrance to stuffing yourself with some of the best BBQ I've ever had, period. As you enter, their smoke pit greets you, and here is where you order your meat. Everything is à la carte, and you order by the half or by the pound. Next, you order your sides, all of which looked awesome, but I was here to go into a meat coma and have the meat sweats. Once you have your bounty in hand, there is a long table with cauldrons of pinto beans, bread, pickles, onions, peppers, and BBQ sauce. Using Franklin's brisket as the G.O.A.T., Opie's is right there with Franklin's claim to fame. Their moist brisket is so tender and moist, and finished with their subtle but savory vinegar-based sauce. Their baby back ribs are fall-off-the-bone delizioso! They have a tad sweet and spicy finish to them. Neither required extra BBQ sauce. Our dining companions raved about their smoked chicken and brisket sandwich. Do not sleep on their pinto beans. I added some BBQ sauce and jalapenos to add a kick to them, perfecto. , Opie's slogan is "Life is good in Spicewood," and it certainly is when you are dining here. We can't wait to return to further explore their menu.

This is the place that is partially responsible for turning me into a barbecue snob. It did so by ruining BBQ for me. I really don't enjoy barbecue most anywhere else! Let's just say that their meat is amazing. All of it. Immaculately cooked. The only BBQ place I have been (that is still open, RIP Schmidt) that actually smokes pork ribs PERFECTLY. All others I have had are either over, under or just ain't got smoke. But their sides. Nobody even comes close to their sides. All of them. Tastes from scratch. No opened cans here - even if they do, by the time they hit your table, they are far from what came out of the can. Their desserts. Amazing. Just like everything else. And they have so much to choose from. This place is the real deal. Has been since we first went about 11 or 12 years ago. So happy to see that some of the good things you find in life stay the same. But before we could try... they closed permanently. But, shortly after, we read Inman's was going to take it over and within months they transformed a run down shack into a really sharp looking restaurant. I never found out when they were going to open, but it wasn't hard to figure after driving by one day and seeing the parking lot full. And when a place has such a full lot after only being open for a few days... it's something you know you have to check out for yourself! It's small, but really just the right size. When you walk in, they have a large menu above the counter and it's pretty straightforward. We tried a chopped turkey sandwich and a chopped brisket sandwich with a half pound of pork ribs, mac 'n cheese and cole slaw. The indoor dining is very nice and comfortable. It didn't take very long for us to get our order; they have bread, pickles, beans and sauce you can help yourself to. The turkey was okay but it seemed a little dry or overcooked. The brisket is good, but the sandwich is just a little plain. Maybe the brisket is better when you order it sliced. The pork ribs were very interesting. The meat does come right off the rib and for a few of the pieces, it was mostly meat and no bone at all. On the other hand, some of the bones had very little meat on them. The meat was cooked to the point it's almost like jerky. Not in a bad way... the pork ribs are pretty good and just very different from anything I've ever had. Nice spices rubbed into the ribs. The BBQ sauce is pretty watery and not very special. It has some flavor but no punch or spice. The cole slaw is pretty average. I think it needs more vinegar and mayo. But the white cheddar mac 'n cheese is epic! This is not a store bought mac 'n cheese and if you come here, don't miss out! They have pies which we didn't try but I'm sure on our next visit. The BBQ here is good and the people who work here are very nice.

It's about 25 minutes over curvy roads thru the hills outside of Austin central metro area. I was glad that I went because I've been to Austin many times yet had not been northwest of the city. I tried many items. The sides were only $4 for the "small" portions (which weren't that small), so I tried all of them. The mac and cheese cork screw pasta was especially delicious. In fact, every side was delish and decadent. The jicama cole slaw was good and crunchy, the scalloped potatoes delish, the sriracha cole slaw had a good kick. I also liked the green chili corn and the pinto beans (very hearty). There was a side of pickle chips and onions. Now for the most important part, the brisket. It had a delicious bark on it, but it was just a bit dry. When I told my native Austinite friends this later, they all got very quiet ;). I believe that perhaps the truck makes the meat every other day, and I was there on the second day and so the meat got a bit dry (I'm being purely speculative about this and could be wrong). But it was still amazing! The special that day was "The Volcano Sandwich" (see photos) with brisket, potato salad, bacon jam, jalapenos, and pepper vinegar sauce on a hamburger bun. By the ingredients list, I thought it would be spicy, but it really was not. It was excellent. I also got the straight slices of brisket in its purest form. Again, delicious but a bit on the dry side. I also opted for some pork and got the Maui Waui Taco with pulled pork, pineapple pico de gallo, and chipotle sour cream. It was very tasty and I recommend it for the pork. It had a good kick and just sweet enough, but too much so. I was unsure whether Jim's Smokehouse had a second location along Barton Springs Road in Austin because it was listed on the web. I tried calling a few times to get more information, but got voicemail both times. I confirmed later that, as of this writing, the dt Austin location was closed down. Jim's Smokehouse is co-located with a few other food trucks. There are picnics tables, shaded in the back and a ping pong table. That day, I was served by Cecil? who was incredibly friendly and very welcoming. Such a nice guy. He brought all the food out to me along with the entire napkin holder. He appropriately waited for about 15 minutes to bring me the dessert which was the Keylime Pie with strawberry sauce (on the side). I tell you the pie was fantastic - get it! I think Jim's Smokehouse is 5/5 overall. I would go again in a heartbeat.

EVENT I was in town for a family reunion, in a party of 20 with a bunch of non-locals who were jacked for legit Texas BBQ. The place is loud -- if you're inside, don't expect to catch up with anyone but your immediate neighbors -- but spacious and inviting. We were prepped for an hour wait, but ended up going right in (Saturday at 3:00, before the rush that definitely did arrive). FOOD The bread was a little sweet, the coleslaw mostly savory, and both were fine. The beans and the potato salad were the lowest-rated in my group, but not awful. And the mac 'n' cheese was a big winner -- thick, smooth, delicious. But what of the main event? The sausage was divisive, but to me, thumbs-up. The pulled pork was solid. The brisket was dynamite -- not too spiced, not too lean, not too fatty, and altogether fall-apart fantastic. And my personal favorite, as well as that of several others at the table and recommended by a stuffed diner we passed in the parking lot, were the bison ribs. Sweet, smoky, tender as sin, and very much worth the trip. Goodness. Special mention for the house sauce (another clear highlight for my family) and the peach cobbler (soft top rather than crunchy raised some eyebrows, and it's very butter-forward -- but guilty-pleasure goooood). SERVICE And here's the reason for the review: the service was *exceptional.* Our server, Mason, went WAY above and beyond. He managed our battalion of screwball characters with aplomb, include two boomers ready to go to war over who got to take the check. He was readily available, but never hovering, and incredibly friendly. After chatting just a little about his own forays into smoking meat, it almost felt wrong to leave him behind at the end. We will definitely be coming back!
