    Beautiful Bar

My husband and I made reservations last night for our anniversary and to top off our Hill Country day-trip to see the Johnson City Lights Spectacular. The drinks were creative and top-notch, and the food was perfection. We got the pimento cheese and sausage and I have never had a better pimento cheese - it's smoked, I guess, and it was insanely good. We also shared the SearedPork Chop and got a side of Saffron Parmesan Orzo and everything was ideal. The service was great as well and the ambiance was exactly what we were looking for. There is literally nothing that they could have done better--fantastic experience, as always.

We went to Bryans on 290 for the second time a few days ago. It's a wonderful dining "hidden treasure" in the small town of Johnson City. It's not inexpensive, but the food, and the ambience, is worth it. We had the roasted carpaccio appetizer (large portion for two; excellent flavor, with pita/cracker bread on the side). When the appetizer was a little late, our server brought some complimentary quail legs to tide us over. I was tempted to try the roasted bone marrow, but that will be for another time. My wife had the 7-oz. tenderloin, which was excellent as well. I had the -- also excellent -- "Mom's" pork schnitzel dish, explained to us by Mom herself (the chef/owner's mother), a charming German lady who willingly shared her recipes. (The menu is not German except for her specialties.) Our desserts, one from Mom, were excellent as well. (I know; I keep using that word.) The ambience was fairly quiet, informal with soft, tasteful music (nothing blaring). The tables are spaced gererously. Service was very good. We didn't try the wines. There's a full bar; I had a campari & soda. If you live near Johnson City and can afford a Michelin-level meal, go. If not, like us, Bryans on 290 is a great place for those special dates that are worth driving an hour or so!

We visited for dinner and enjoyed the food, it was high quality quail, duck, and salmon that was paired with unique sides on each dish! I truly enjoyed the twist of the lemon dill weed sauce on my dish it enhanced the flavors in a delicious way! The ambience was quiet and relaxing with nice warm decor and mini yellow lamp fixtures on each table giving the room a subtle calming touch. Even on a busy night and being short staffed my husband and I received good attentive service. We were a bit unhappy that some of the menu options were not available which was mentioned after we were seated. To end the night we tried the bourbon pecan pie which was just the right level of sweetness, crunch, and flakiness topped with a nice custard on top to help give it some needed moisture. Overall, delicious and would recommend that you try if you are in Johnson City!

Finished our day of wine tasting at this place and were happy that we did. The escargot was hands down the best I have ever had. Never realized until today that it could be soft and not like chewing rubber bands. Three of the four of us chose the veal schnitzel and were happy that we did. Great flavor and the mashed potatoes were a hit with my granddaughter. Just a nice higher end restaurant with great food and service.

Bryan's is our favorite spot. The food is amazing, even compared with the hottest spots in Austin. We love the staff....always enjoy a good time. And the bar....fantastic drinks.

Yum! Service was a little slow at times but the food was great! Smaller restaurant and it was very packed! All the food was great and cooked to our liking.

Amazingly delicious wine and food. Service needs some work- our server didn't tell us the dinner specials without us asking, and NEVER refilled our wine or water for our 2 hour visit. Food and ambiance was exquisite. Service needs some training, imo.

Stopped by for brunch, but it turns out they only serve lunch…read more I ordered the pesto pasta with salmon, and it was excellent. The menu said penne pasta, but what arrived was a different pasta shape, rigatoni maybe, that actually worked better. The sauce filled the pasta, so every bite had plenty of flavor. The salmon was cooked nicely with a crisp exterior that added great texture to the dish. My husband ordered the shrimp po'boy, and unfortunately his experience wasn't as positive. The first sandwich had to be sent back because the shrimp were so overcooked they had the texture of chicharrones. The staff quickly remade it, but the second sandwich was only slightly better. Part of the issue seemed to be the size of the shrimp. They were quite small, which makes them much easier to overcook. Considering this is a seafood and steakhouse restaurant, we were surprised by the size and quality of the shrimp. That said, both our waiter and the manager were very kind and responsive when addressing the issue. We chose not to send the sandwich back a second time, and my husband simply didn't finish his meal. The iced tea was delicious. They prepare it tableside using something similar to a coffee press, which made it taste especially fresh. And the view? Excellent as always.

There is nothing I enjoy more than wandering into a small town and finding a fantastic restaurant!…read more Trust me, you now have another reason to drive to Johnson City. Yes, they have antique stores, a mortor cycle museum, the annual Rodeo, and LBJ's boyhood home. But they have some very interesting restaurants as well. Let me tell you about Proof of Cooper. My wife and I were on one of my adventures, picking up some items an hour from home. It's hot, late afternoon and we wanted a cocktail and good food. We walked into Proof of Cooper to look at the menu, we were greeted by lovely smells of cooking coming from the kitchen. This was the place for us. We ordered an Old Fashion and a Peach Fashioned. My Old Fashion was perfect! Great balance of whisky and sweetness. My wife really enjoyed her Peach fashioned. The menu has a lot of variety, Texas favorites for sure. It was hard to choose. We were told they did their BBQ out back, this restaurant does not look like your typical BBQ place. The bar is home town but the dining room is Hunting club rustic. To order, I had the smoked turkey club on Texas toast with green beans, my wife had the BBQ sample plate with Mac and cheese & pit master beans. Her meat choices were brisket, pulled pork and spare ribs. My sandwich was great! The bread was toasted just right, the turkey has a nice smoky flavor with ham and bacon. Loved the green beans. Then I stole some of the pit master beans off my wife's plate. Oh some dam good. And so was the Mac and cheese. Brisket and pulled pork were tender, flavorful and just right, on par with some of the best bbq places I have eaten at here in Texas. Spare ribs were too firm for my wife but I enjoyed them. The staff was wonderful. Very helpful, nice and fun to work with. This is a family owned restaurant and the staff that we met were all born and raised here. We look forward to coming back to Johnson City and visiting Proof of Cooper again. If just to try the delicious looking desserts we had no room for, see our photos.

Let me first say I wish this establishment well, and hope they have success in their endeavors…read more I was in centex to visit daughter, and suggested a bbq tour of the small towns west of Aus. We arrived at P&C mid afternoon on a Monday. We were touring this and other towns, so only ordered the pulled pork sandwich, side of mac n cheese and side of mashed potatoes w gravy between the two of us. And some extra bbq sauce on the side. The pulled pork sandw comes premade with what looks to be homemade pickles, smoked pulled pork, coleslaw, & bbq sauce. The presentation is fairly impressive. Unfortunately, the taste did not measure up. We had bites of the sandwich as a whole, and also tasted the individual ingred by themself to get a feel for what contributed to the overall. The pulled pork was hit/miss. Some of it was generously smoked & that smokiness came through. Other bites of it the smoked flavor was not prominent. Mac n Cheese - solid. By far the best thing we tried. Super cheesy, flavorful. Nice work! Coleslaw - substandard. I'd say the C range. Pickles on the sandwich - they were thicker and appeared homemade. They didn't seem like they had been left to sit long enough on the shelf for the pickling to soak in. In appearance they were still very close to cucumbers instead of pickled cucumbers. Flavor wise they didn't taste like cukes, but nor did they add a dill-ish or sweet pickle flavor of substance. (Can see the pickles in attached pic, can see the color and texture doesn't look significantly pickled.) Sauce - extremely little flavor. The consistency was not watery, but you had to close your eyes and concentrate to taste what little flavor there was - as though it was watered down immensely. Sauce gets a D. Mashed potatoes & gravy. They served the gravy on the side. The potatoes themselves were good - a little buttery and therefore enjoyable. The consistency of the gravy was mealy - was unexpected, and odd. Lacked the common flavor of a hearty gravy begun with a roux of flour and meat drippings. (Zoom in on attached photo, you can see the mealy and almost-grainy texture of the gravy.) Overall we weren't impressed. The mac n cheese being the best thing is not what you expect at a bbq place. Like I said, we wish the establishment well. But we wouldn't come back when in Johnson City. Final note, the hostess/server was genuinely warm and friendly. She was wearing multiple hats, running around, but was pleasant and engaging.

ChatGPT raved about Sunset Grill, so we hopped in the car and zoomed down. Upon arriving, we walked into the cramped restaurant, and we were greeted by a nice hostess. She put our name on a list, and we had a brief 5-10 minute wait before we were seated. We were handed menus and left to peruse the menu. After a brief wait, we were greeted by our waiter and he took our drinks. In good time the waiter was back with drinks and he took our order. I ordered a bacon and cheese omelette. It came with potatoes and toast. The wife ordered the plate with eggs over easy, crispy bacon, and potatoes. The wife and I sat and had a nice visit. We should not have drank our drinks so fast, as they stayed empty the entire time we visited. Our waiter not once made eye contact so we could get a refill either. After an average wait time, our food came. Our waiter noticed the drinks and then refilled them. My omelette was undercooked and watery, the cheese was not melted, and the bacon was chewy. Furthermore, the toast was also very dry. I would have gotten butter to put on them, but the waiter never came back to check on us. The wife's eggs were cooked over hard, the bacon was rubbery, and very underwhelming. Our drinks went empty and we never got refills, again. We paid the bill and went shopping. I was glad to get out of there. I had high hopes for this place based on the reviews, but I think they missed the mark here. ChatGPT did me dirty on this one. I don't know if they just were having a bad day, or what the deal was, but this was a one and done for me. I cannot say I recommend this one. I was very disappointed.

We had Kristen as our server, she was so attentive and sweet. To start we tried the sweet cornbread, lavender mint lemonade, and regular lemonade. The lavender mint lemonade was one of the best drinks I've had in a while. For our meals he had the BLTA with fries and I had the avocado and lime salad with tri tip steak. Absolutely stellar food, quality ingredients and great flavors. We had leftovers for sure, lol, something to eat on the drive back to DFW the next day. For dinner, we sat outside and had Jess as our server. She was also really nice, she had quite a few tables and still managed to give us plenty of attention. We had carnitas nachos and the ground beef soup. The carnitas nachos are... unnecessarily large. lol Luckily the soup bowl was very small so I was able to help the boyfriend with some nachos. But my small effort was not enough and he tapped out of the nachos at the halfway mark. Highly recommend the nachos if you have four friends with you. =D This was a great restaurant with a lovely outdoor space. Vibe is euro-bistro and the staff is perfectly attentive. Prices are high, but honestly aligned to the quality of the food, at least the dishes we had were worth the prices. Food: Buttermilk Fried Chicken, with Onion/Bacon flash fried collard greens, whipped potatoes and house gravy and Jalapeno Cornbread for $32 Reuben on Marble Rye for $24 16oz Stella Artois for $10 We agreed that the fried chicken (5/5) was the best we could remember having. Whipped potatoes (5/5) were light, fluffy and perfect taste/texture. The gravy was like brown butter (5/5). The collard greens (5/5) were flash fried and if you've never had them like this, it's like eating collard green potato chips. Cornbread (3/4) was a bit too delicate and sweet for our taste. You couldn't pick it up without it falling apart. The Ruben (3/5). My wife loves a good Ruben sandwich. This one had the makings of a good one, but they use a Thousand Island sauce (too much of it) on the sandwich, and it hides the flavor of the meat. Next time we would ask for the sandwich without the TI sauce, see if that improves the rating. The sandwich came with house made potato chips (5/5), a small house salad with vinaigrette (5/5) and a large, pickled cucumber. I know, that's a pickle, but these are cucumbers that have gone maybe a third of the way through the process, so the cucumber taste is really prevalent. Lastly, we had the Creme Brulé (3/5) for dessert. It was nice, but the custard was coffee and caramel flavored, and we prefer the standard custard look and flavor. The caramel should come from the top layer, not the custard. The top layer was a bit too thick as well. We liked it, just didn't love it. Overall, quality food, service and vibe with prices that are aligned to more special occasions than everyday eating out. We'll be back to try the Monday Crawfish Etoufee and the Tuesday Duck Confit daily specials...look too good to pass up.
