Arrive at 7pm. They close at 8 (on Sunday when I went), and the sun sets right around 8z I visited The Overlook last weekend by myself in hopes of finding a really good spot to replace On the Rocks, which has closed recently. I wasn't disappointed, and I will be eating here more often. Now to the review, the good and the needs work. This was my first time here. I drove out because I called on a Sunday and they didn't answer, but Google said they should be open. So 30 mins later I'm driving up the long driveway. Signs weren't super helpful inside the park (it's situated inside the park), but I quickly figured it out. When I arrived I had to walk in a little ways as it's a part of a park/resort with cabins and a gift shop area. Once I got inside I ended up meeting Steven (awesome guy will explain shortly). The place was mostly empty except for a few larger parties inside. The outside is why I came, so regardless of the heat I went outside. Steven explained he was he bartender and that everyone had called in... it was just him and the cook. I told him I was totally fine and just get me whenever. Regardless of the workload I still think he handled me better than 75% of the wait staff I've encounter, which include a lot of higher end Landry's staff. So I was completely normal when the food came out 30 or so mins later. So the service was on point, what about everything else? The Food: *House Salad w/ a Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette - The dressing was a bit thick, but it was a decent salad. I would have liked to see it thinned our slightly, and maybe not as sweet. *Ribeye Steak, Mashed Potatoes, and Corn on the Cob - This is where I am going to critique. The steak butter was what seemed like Chipotle Lime, which didn't really sit well on the steak. The steak really just needed to be salted, peppered slightly, and I definitely think they should up the game on their cuts (precut with a butcher), and then salted, marinated if needed, and then cooked properly with a standard plain steak butter on the side (not on the steak). The mashed potatoes were in need of garlic or salt, and they really needed more mashing. The corn I wasn't interested in on the cob. If it had been husk grilled and then cut off in sheets that would be been interesting. I paired it with a Jacobs Creek Shiraz (can't go wrong w that, but I would have liked some possible recommendations considering he was the bartender). Dessert I just needed a pallet cleanser from the steak butter... so Vanilla Bean Scoop and I was good. I'll definitely go more often now, but I wanted to try everything exactly the way it was prepped. I will just modify based on what I want and the bar will go way up because of that. Updated 8/12 I waited a few Sunday's and came back at the same time since it had been a rough week. I asked for the same meal, but I changed up the requests on how the dish was prepared. The result was night and day. I'm glad I made the adjustments, and I still have some critiques, but the overall dish was greatly improved. So into the meal. What stayed the same, and what changed to make such a drastic difference. House Salad - Swapped to a Ranch Dressing (I had no idea the Ranch would be house made... awesome.) Ribeye Steak, Mashed Potatoes, and a Welcome Change - I omitted the regular steak butter completely, asked them to season it w salt and pepper properly with regular butter slightly melted on the side. Add the extra char to the top, and I asked for medium. (The steak definitely had flavor, but still wasn't salted and rested enough. The add of salt and pepper with regular butter was enough to do the job of calling it the best steak in Burnet. I still have to add that the cuts, the seasoning, and the tenderizing needed work. I really wish they would pick up a Filet or a NY Strip. They would definitely handle better in the kitchen.) (The Mashed Potatoes were much more towards a whipped, which was at least 50% better. Some Garlic would have added some flavor, but I was good with it.) (The Welcome Change - A vegetable slaw that was slightly al dente, which added a nice texture to the savory smoked flavor profile. This was my favorite part of the dish and I could have just eaten a bowl of it.) Dessert - A Key Lime Cheesecake with what seemed like White Chocolate and Raspberry Purée. I finished it all... and I was happy about it . The Wine: A California Cabernet from Grayson Cellars. I let it warm up and it went well with the steak. The Shiraz would have been a little much. Updated 8/18 I went back... and ended up on the 14th/Wednesday. I had the same House Salad with the House Ranch (perfect). I think they prepped it differently (tomatoes were mixed green/red which gave it an alternating flavor from ripe to a little less sweet, which worked well). Grilled Chicken, with Seasoned Veggies - This was spot on. The base on the chicken and how the finish was handled add

Pan-seared potato crusted black cod... had to search for a photo, but it was cooked like this, and SO excellent!

The bartender claimed I was drunk and cut me off anyway. I was at the bar talking to a girl while waiting to get a drink (the wait was long because the service is very slow, despite the bar not being very busy at all). She was clearly into me, and the bartender kept jumping in trying to talk to her too (instead of doing his job making drinks). He was doing all sorts of things to try and flirt with her and make her laugh: pulling out and showing her buckets of pre mixed cocktails, running and sliding under the bar, etc. She was engaging with both of us , and right in the middle of that, I get cut off out of nowhere. No explanation other than claiming I looked drunk, which I very clearly wasn't. It felt very clear what was going on--he wanted me out of the way. I left and asked the bouncer on my way out if I seemed drunk. This was literally two minutes later. He said no, not at all, and asked me why I would even ask that. I then told him exactly what happened and asked him to let the owner or whoever was in charge know about this extremely unprofessional conduct so they can discipline the bartender. His response was that the bartender has discretion to cut anyone off, and let me know the bartender is supposedly married so he couldn't have been flirting with any of the customers. Well, sounds like his logic is flawed--not only COULD he flirt with his customers, he WAS, and was therefore cheating. I hope his wife finds out. This is perfectly representative of Austin customer service lately and not normal in other places. I was in Tampa for an entire month earlier this year and this would've been unthinkable there. I'm not coming back.

We each ordered two tacos, and they were delicious! They're much bigger than they look, so if you're not very hungry, one taco is probably enough.
