My friend and I stopped by after hiking at Inks Lake State Park and it was definitely an oasis for folks in the area! It is very much a dive bar with ample beer selection and a simple menu. My brother and I have been riding our motorcycles all over the Texas hill country and we happened to find this cool little bar out near the Lake Buchanan dam. After striper fishing all morning, we came here for a beer and a bite. No, we did not go fishing for strippers. Strippers are girls who work a pole for money, and stripers are caught using a pole with a line and hooks. Not the kind of lines and hooks you'd try using on strippers, but the type that snags fish. Does that make sense? No? Okay, one is a professional dancer, the other's a fish. We were after the fish kind - stripers with only one "p" - and we caught a mess of them out on Lake Buchanan. Afterward, our striper guide, Travis, said, "Go to the Dam Pub, they have excellent burgers!" So go to the Dam Pub we did. We ordered burgers, and the bartender said something about taking 45 minutes, but I could not hear her clearly because I what I thought I heard was that it would take 45 minutes before our burgers came out of the kitchen. That's apparently NOT what she said, and instead she must have said, "The cook is running late he won't be in for another 45 minutes." But as luck would have it, had I heard her correctly, we would have left to eat elsewhere. Anyway, an hour and a half later we were finally served our burgers and they were indeed excellent. This place was so what we wanted and needed that we ate here twice on vacation. There are some caveats, but I'm sticking with 5 stars because I'll go out of my way to stop here again. I'm a big patio guy, and this place has a lot of patio space. So we're off to a good start. While I wouldn't call it a family place, there were other kids there and in general I think a burger bar with a patio means you can bring kids as long as you don't let them run amok. Check. Cold beer from the bar - check. Solid burgers and apps - check. Good service at both our table and at the bar - check. Caveat: I played shuffleboard with my son. It was a nice board and there was a rule that kids couldn't use the shuffleboard unattended. I stepped away from the board at one point - for another beer, I think - and a no-nonsense dude informed me that it was a major charge if my kid messed up the table and that they had serious games there (a local league, was it?). He was pretty serious about their shuffleboard, and I get it. It was a nice one and clearly the locals enjoyed using it. I reassured him my son was careful and respectful and I was present, and we didn't have any issues. But he didn't mince words, so... heads up, don't let crazy kids on this shuffleboard table and don't leave respectful, careful kids alone to play on it. I have no issues with rules like this when bringing kids to a bar and grill. This ain't Chuck E. Cheese. Final note: it wasn't exactly a diverse crowd. It was whitebread central. We're white, to be clear, but when you visit twice and that theme continues, I feel the need to mention it as a just-in-case heads-up for non-white folks. I saw ads on the wall for a black comedian that was going to do standup there, so hopefully that's a good sign. Just a heads up since this is definitely a country sort of spot and... well, sometimes you just can't tell! read more

My wife and I stopped by here on our way to Kingsland just a few miles away. We wanted a beer and I had come to this place years ago and played shuffleboard. They have updated and it is great. Not fancy, but very inviting and comfortable. We liked it so much we drove back over the next day to have a burger. I had a full pound burger and it was one of the best of my life! Great food. Very pleasant bar. The staff was very friendly and attentive! Our drinks never got halfway empty before our waitress brought would bring the next round. The menu is short and to the point and very legible to read, it could be elevated with some photos of the menu items or updated style. The seating had variety from booths to bar stools, there is also pool tables and tvs with music for entertainment. Parking is typical for a dive bar kind of setting, could be paved with markers for easier accessibility. For the drinks- they were served cold and refreshing both bottle and draft. The appetizers we had was the fried mushrooms and both kinds of jalapeño poppers. They were fried to the right doneness and served with ranch which complemented greatly. The mushrooms had great texture! Both kinda of poppers were also textured and filled greatly! The only downside to the poppers is they all had the same breading so lacking variety. The burger I ordered was decent but lacking overall. It was dry, and over cooked (I ordered rare) and lacked seasoning. The onion rings were typical style , homemade would be better. They should make some wicked staff shirts too. Overall a very nice place to set back and have some cold ones after a day riding or boating in the area. read more

This isn't your typical country roadside bar! The staff is very friendly and the owners, Bob & Missy, can usually be found working right along with the staff or personally greeting customers. The burgers are large and you can't go wrong with the French fries or onion rings. The back patio is a great place to hang out and enjoy a great view of Inks Lake, spring, summer or fall. If you prefer indoors they have pool & shuffleboard. If you get a chance to attend one of their special events I definitely recommend it, they also have good live music. read more

I just wrote my whole review and accidentally deleted it! This time, I wrote it in another location and pasted it, since this one has no "go back" feature. This was my second visit to Reverend Jim's. Just like the last time, I was there for a burger during a camping trip to Inks Lake State Park. Sometimes you get hungry for something other than camp food. I sat at a table out on the covered deck. It was a hot and humid day, but I was very comfortable. They had a great big fan blowing, that helped keep it cooler and pushed the smoke from the people who were smoking at just about every other table away from me. I guess I would have to say that, if you are bothered by smoking in a restaurant, this is not the place for you. The fan did a pretty good job though, and I wasn't bothered. The service is great. I had only been at my table for about 2 minutes before a server came out to the deck and asked me what I wanted to drink. I ordered a beer and went ahead and ordered my burger, since I already knew what I wanted. Every time one of the servers came out to any table on the deck, they checked on me to see if I was okay. I had pretty much guzzled that beer, but didn't really want another one, as I had a function to go to. I ordered the half pound burger basket with fries. I had them add some blue cheese and bacon to my burger. The second the server put my basket on the table, a swarm of flies attacked. it was crazy. It felt like something out of a book like the Exorcist. I quickly cut my burger in half, squirted some ketchup in the basket, and ate my food with my right hand while swatting at flies with my left. It was kind of like getting a workout during the meal. I won't hold that against the restaurant, I was outside after all. The burger was excellent. The bun was soft and moist. It had the sweetness of a brioche. I don't know if they bake them on site or not. The meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The burger was juicy and greasy, just the way I like. The fries were the kind that are lightly battered or something. I am not a fan of them- normally. But these were really good. I will be back at Reverend Jim's whenever I camp at Inks Lake. The burger is surely within the top 10 best I've had. I hope to have several more of them in the future. read more

Poppers and fried mushrooms for appetizers and cold beers and you've got the perfect, quick dinner in an environment that conjures another era. I like Reverend Jim's but make no mistake this is a dive bar that almost encourages you to smoke. I'm surprised they don't offer you a cigarette when you order a beer. There are ashtrays everywhere and many of the regulars (and staff) puff away. All that said the back deck while not smoke free has fans and if you don't want to inhale toxic waste is "normally" a safe bet. If I owned the place I'd make the deck picnic tables smoke free just to make us non-smokers feel like were invited to the party. The back deck also has a nice view of Buchanan Dam and a portion of Inks Lake. The waitresses are really on top of their game and keep a careful eye on the customers. The food is typical deep fried bar fare but the grilled chicken is an exception. They have a local reputation for great hamburgers and while I'm not a huge burger fan the couple I've had were outstanding. You MUST tell them what temp you want the meat or it will come out medium. I prefer the home made chips over the fries. Beer is cold to very cold and prices are very reasonable. Weekends bring live bands and there's normally some kind of sports on the TV's. All and all Jim's is a big bang for the buck and a nice spot to chill when you're in the Highland Lakes. read more

I just moved to the area and found that this was the only place to grab a bite to eat so I stoped in gingery and tired. Every seat at the bar was taken and besides the 5 tables seating 2 to 6 people there was a dinner party of about 17 or so. The 1 bar tender was extremely busy as she was the only one to make drinks take all orders and deliver food. Despite the craziness of it all she was sure to great me and take the time to explain the menu. The wait was a bit long for a burger and fries but remember the amount of customers and on top of that there was only 1 person in the kitchen cooking.
