I've been looking for a good authentic pub in Central TX but unfortunately have not found it yet. We went in on a Sunday afternoon. It was not busy. Service was good and friendly. There's a good variety of beer/liquor. Food was meh. The batter on the fish and chips wasn't great - it was thick rather than crispy and flaky. And it was one giant piece of fish shaped like a log. Comes with ketchup, tartar sauce, and mushy peas. We had to request vinegar. I was looking forward to the peas but they were awful. They had an odd flavor to them that I couldn't pinpoint. The shepherds pie was also just ok. It was mostly meat and I don't think it's made with fresh potato (seemed like boxed potatoes). It honestly reminded me of a Stouffers meal. A bit of a letdown considering they were featured on Kitchen Nightmares. Unfortunately, none of the dishes impressed us. The scotch egg was cooked well in that it had a crispy exterior and soft boiled center, but the outer layer was very bland. The burger was a greasy, saucy mess and weirdly, the sauce did nothing to add to or complement the flavor. The shepherd's pie was probably the best of the three but that's not saying much as I don't think it's that difficult to make - the mash was ok and the meat component tasted one note. Service was extremely friendly and on point. We were helped right away and checked in on several times, so many kudos to the waitstaff! Ordered the Grumpy Old Fashioned and another drink. But the old fashioned had me blown away. Forget the other drink... If that's what grumpy tastes like, sign me up. Rich. Smooth. That hint of chocolate bitterness sneaking in like it has secrets it's not ready to share. Strong, confident, and completely unbothered -- the kind of drink that doesn't raise its voice because it doesn't have to. No unnecessary frills. No overcomplicated theatrics. Just a perfectly crafted cocktail that respects tradition but adds a little dark, sultry wink. It lingers just long enough to make you lean in for another sip. 10/10. This was my second time eating at the grumpy George and unfortunately the second time wasn't as good as the first. Come on consistency. Both times I ordered the fish and chips. The first time they were so tasty that I went back for seconds. I won't say the taste was completely missing, I was more disappointed with the portion size. The fries we're half portion and soggy and so was part of the fish. I ordered the food to go, so was pleasantly surprised when I opened the container to find what appeared as a half portion. It was as if someone said I want half, put the other half in the other container. I won't say I'm not returning but if I do I'll definitely check my order before I leave the premises. read more

Talk about a great atmosphere and service. The bartender/ server, mary, is always super attentive and makes some solid drinks. When it comes to food the fish and chips are elite. The second time I came, I got the smash burger - what a mistake. It was as if you told someone to make a "smash" burger and they cooked two patties and then smashed them together and put it between buns from HEB. It was also way over salted. To add insult to injury they gave me fries with the burger despite the waitress saying it didn't come with the burger... that means I ordered a second serving of fries .. they have good fries though I'll give them that. This spot nails it inside and out. It has that classic authentic pub look with a few local touches and modern accents. The drinks set the tone. My wife had the seasonal apple cider whiskey sour and loved it. I went with a cold, crisp pint of Harp which was perfect. For starters, I ordered the pastrami salmon. Honestly it was a top 5 meat experience for me, and I eat carnivore 90% of the time. My wife had the Welsh rarebit toast, which came out creamy and rich. The toast and side salad paired perfectly in both flavor and texture. For mains, I went with the shepherd's pie. The mashed potatoes were fluffy and smooth, roasted just right, and the filling was everything you want it to be. My wife had the Grumpy smash burgers with honey glazed carrots. Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly. We finished with the sticky toffee pudding. The flavor and consistency were spot on, rich, warm, and comforting. It was a little small for sharing, but still worth every bite. The service was friendly and attentive, and we had enough space to relax and enjoy our meal. All around, this place delivered from start to finish. Great design, great food, great drinks. 10/10 recommend. I will definitely be back for darts and a pint with some bros. read more

What a delightful night. This was the first time we been here since shortly after they opened. Our first visit wasn't fantastic. This visit was much much better. The place is narrow and can get loud. We were still able to talk at our table. The food menu is somewhat small. There are options for most tastes. I had the chicken Caesar. It was excellent and I highly recommend it. My wife had the fish and chips and was very happy with it. I do recommend finishing with the sticky toffee pudding. It was a great finish to the meal. Lots of options for cocktails and beers as well. Came in for a Thursday lunch upon recognizing the restaurant from the show. We were seated immediately and decided to try the creamed cabbage & peas with smoked bacon for starters. We went on the first night of the soft opening after the refresh and a week later and the food was excellent and service was timely and attentive, considering how busy they were. The Shepard's Pie was hearty and very tasty, the roasted carrots were exceptional, and the Fish & Chips was also very good! The fried cod loin was perfectly done as were the steak fries and the mushy peas were a perfect complement, but the fresh-made Tartare Sauce was perfect and the best I've had in decades since making it at Piccadilly and Luby's with scratch-made mayonnaise lots of chopped sour pickles and fresh parsley. When it comes to The Grumpy George, I'm torn between giving it 3 or 4 stars. It really deserves something right in between. I ate there last week with family and I appreciated the ambiance, even if it's a bit too clean, too new, too shiny to deliver the pub feel one gets used to visiting venues across North America and even the UK and Ireland. That said, the food was good, albeit a little bit expensive. We got the fish and chips and it came with just one piece of cod. Thankfully it was a large piece, but I've seen reviewers previously complain that they didn't get so lucky. Maybe it would be better to serve 2-4 pieces instead of one? Perception matters... The taste was good in any case and my husband really liked his mashed peas. Fries (excuse me, chips!) were also good. The glazed carrots as a side were tasty and not too overwhelming, easy to pair with whatever dish was on the table. Surprisingly The Grumpy George did not have tea bags of any kind but they were kind enough to boil some hot water in a mug for my mother in law who had a sore throat that evening. I happened to have some tea bags with me (a lady has to be ready for any circumstance!) so that solved the issue. The service was good, and we didn't have to wait long to get seated, even on a Saturday evening. So it all worked out. Now, would I go back? That's the question... If invited, sure. But on my own? Unlikely. I have experienced more exciting pubs elsewhere, although I will admit that Texas in general doesn't have a whole lot of options... read more

"Grumpy George", an English pub in Georgetown, Texas. A novel idea and definitely a courageous stand in a city surrounded by Brisket and Tex-Mex. I applaud the owner for taking this venture on. Authentic Fish and chips has always been one of my favorite dishes to enjoy, yet hard to find here, along with Asian and Baja style Mexican food. I'd just read that this restaurant was a Gordon Ramsay's, "Kitchen Nightmares" make over, that would air later tonight. So I wanted to eat here before it became famous. I'm not sure what the challenge was before. The menu is simple, definitely not "Cheesecake Factory", but maybe that's what they needed. We ordered Fish and Chips and the burger. Everything is cooked to order so it took a normal amount of time. There were a few folks inside, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals. Since we live near Georgetown, after waiting for some months after the Gordon Ramsay makeover in March of this year, we opted to stop in with another couple for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. There were a few tables of people, but by no means was it crowded. It took almost 10 minutes for a server (the only one) to stop by and apologize for the wait and brought water and asked about a drink order. We ordered a few different beers and waited another little bit to have those brought out (he was also the bar tender). Then, another 10 minutes while he settled the other table's checks, he came to take our food order, again apologizing for the wait. We weren't in a hurry, so it wasn't a big deal for us. We placed our orders (2 of us had fish & chips, one had the Shepards pie, and one had the daily special Rueben sandwich). We also ordered and shared a Scotch egg, which was wonderful! The food arrived in a short amount of time and we dug in. The fish portion was huge, nicely battered, and served with a mountain of thick cut fries along with mushy peas in a small cup. The Shepard's pie was hot, full of chunks of lamb, gravy, and mashed potatoes, and the Rueben also came with a large portion of fries. After we finished (the only small complaint was that the Rueben didn't have enough Russian dressing on it and caused it to be a little dry) we opted to share a sticky toffee dessert between the four of us. Ambiance: 10/10 Service quality: 10/10 Service time: 8/10 Food quality: 9/10 Price: 9/10 Overall a good lunch that held us well into the evening. Showed up with a friend. We wanted to try a drink, eat something and catch up. It wasn't busy which was nice. Couldn't decide where to sit. The stools at the booth tables wobbled and no backs of course but sitting at the booth side made it uncomfortable talking to each other. Sitting by the door in the chairs was a bit awkward. You can hear conversations that carry. We both chose fish and chips with the mushy peas. Ordered a mocktail and a cocktail. Mocktail didn't come as described at all. No explanation why. Tasted no difference than a lemonade of some sort. My drink wasn't much of anything. Would've been better on a hotter day maybe. Couldn't taste the gin at all. Felt like a wasted drink and money. Ordered their old fashioned. It was extremely smooth. The chocolate added to it. Easy to sip and like silk on the tongue. I'd go back just for that. The fish? Eh. Tasted frozen not fresh. Mushy peas tasted like they came from a can. Barely warm. The fries were nothing to talk about. The tartar sauce wasn't fresh. Tastes like it came from a grocery store. Nothing else really sounded appetizing. The Google reviews really never tell the truth. Should've listened to Yelp. Avoid for the food unless desperate. Go for the Old Fashioned and maybe to watch a game or two. The decor wasn't much of anything either. We even passed it by the place and didn't even notice it until looking. We came here after watching the kitchen nightmares episode to see if it had improved. I think it did slightly, they did take the pork belly sliders off the menu which was my favorite. My friend got the fish and chips, he said the breading was light and crispy on the fish. It was a beefy piece of fish when he wished it was two strips of fish instead of one. The smash burger was yummy according to my other friend but she couldn't finish it all. I got the fries and bangers and mash which were divine and I don't usually enjoy sausage. There are a lot of things that are difficult about downtown Georgetown (The Square in particular) these days. Parking is terrible. There is construction. And prices for anything food-wise are very high. The Grumpy George shares allk those problems. But there is something different. After hiking from the parking spot I could find on a Saturday, I stepped into the cool air and dark confines of a wonderful, family-friendly pub. The service was immediate and and warm as I sat at the bar. Of course, in a pub, I ordered a Guinness. The pour took several minutes and was PERFECT. The prices on the menu are...pricey. $20 for fish and chips woth a side? I didn't try it so I'm not knocking it just giving a heads up. the atmosphere, honestly, makes it worth trying. I had the pastry wrapped sausage, delicious! Despite the inconveniences I have made Grumpy a meeting place for my friends visiting from Austin. It is a wonderful environment. You can start a day on The Square there, finish it there or just stay put. I'll dock it a star for prices but I still enjoy a pint there. read more

My wife, who's a big Ramsay fan, and I visited Grumpy George after its recent appearance on Kitchen Nightmares. We tried the Rarebit Toast, Scotch Eggs, Crispy Fried Shrimp, Shepherd's Pie, and the Bangers and Mash. The toast was disappointing, with a topping that resembled cheese wiz and tasted burnt, neither of us had more than a bite. The Scotch Eggs had a perfectly cooked egg interior, but unfortunately, the outside was burnt, overshadowing any enjoyment. The shrimp was decent but nothing remarkable. The Shepherd's Pie was underwhelming, with a lamb filling that tasted like sloppy joes topped with overly crisp and dry mashed potatoes. The Bangers and Mash were essentially mashed potatoes with sausage reminiscent of what you'd pick up at HEB, with the sausage doing most of the heavy lifting. It also had what I can only explain as pickled caramelized onions The Bloody Mary was enjoyable, but the New Fashioned cocktail was overwhelmingly sweet, tasting like pure syrup. I'm not typically a picky eater, and it's rare for me to dislike Shepherd's Pie, but I found myself swapping dishes with my wife because I couldn't finish it. Given the steep prices, even judging by bar food standards, the overall experience simply wasn't worth it. Grumpy is a great addition to the Georgetown Square. We three stopped by for Apps and cocktails. This is a British-themed bar with some interesting brews on tap. Our Apps were large and our craft cocktails were good pours. We saw some food travel by and the fish and chips looked tremendous. They have some interesting Brit-themed food such as Pork And Sage Scotch Egg and Bangers And Mash. There are TVs if you wish to catch a game, a long bar with plenty of seating, large booths, and plenty of smaller tables. Grumpy reminds me of the Kenny Fort Pub in Round Rock in a good way. read more

I would give the Grumpy George a 4.5/5 stars, but Yelp doesn't let me give half stars. I really like this pub and restaurant. The server, who was also the manager was SO nice. She definitely made me feel beyond welcome. I had the bangers and mash, as well as a side of the glazed carrots. I think the food was great, the only thing that I would have preferred is if the onion gravy was a bit thicker. The sticky toffee pudding is FANTASTIC. Flew all the way down from Salt Lake City Utah for my friend's wedding and one of his friends recommended this Pub, walked in and completely loved the atmosphere and the ambiance of this establishment. Our server Jules was fantastic, dedicated and accommodated every one at our table while being able to have conversation and make jokes. What a server !?!? There were these rude, arrogant and disrespectful ladies down from us who already had enough to drink and were rude to the waitress they were met with the exit door really quickly so everyone else could enjoy this amazing pub !!! It was good - no major issues or complaints. We drove from Waco just to eat here. We got the scotched egg and he enjoyed it as well as the Shepards pie. I got the smash burger... but it wasn't a smash burger. It was just a normal burger. The patties were thick and shrunk way too much that half of the bun was empty. The cheese tasted ultra processed. I feel like I could have made this burger at home myself. Smash burgers are iconic and something people in the area crave because of what should be a high temp and fast cooking time char. Service was great though. Our waitress was attentive and checked on us multiple times. The wait time was quite long. We ordered and didn't get anything for about 40 minutes. We were the one of the two only tables and we were the first ones whose orders were taken, so it wasn't slammed busy. There were a couple of guys who came in with pizza and stayed at the bar, which kinda put us off because we were hungry. Overall, the food was good, just not nothing that we felt like we were missing out on. Not really worth the drive, but just very mediocre. read more

The best burger in Georgetown! Perfectly cooked and juicy. Bun and fries were very good. Also got their burrata heirloom tomato salad and it was amazing. Ingredients were fresh and the dressing was light but flavorful. Like summer in my mouth. I added shrimp to it and this was the star of the meal. They butterfly grilled it with a slight char but it was still moist and tasted very fresh. The ambiance here is super fun and aesthetically moody but upscale. Service was excellent. Definitely a great place for drinks. Hubs got a Negroni and they did the one big ice cube thing so I'm sure their cocktail selection is top notch--will have to come back to try them. read more
