Do not eat at the Grumpy George Pub in Georgetown TX. It was featured in one of Gordon Ramsay's shows but has gone downhill significantly since filming. The episode aired recently. Terrible food bad service and grumpy staff. Not a good representation of British Food. Reality: after a 50 minute wait for 'bangers and mash', the mash arrived cold and the server was a sour puss. Terrible food. Gordon Ramsey has not fixed this place. Only good thing during the 'meal' was Old Speckled Hen beer! We didn't finish our meal and left in disgust over the quality and lack of proper care from the kitchen. Avoid the The Grumpy George at all costs. Bad representation of a 'British Pub'. Was in town for my wedding a couple of days ago. Stopped by here because it sounded good. I was wrong, it was delicious. The food was phenomenal, the beer was cold, and the cocktails were perfect. Our server Jules was very attentive and happy to serve even though there was a table of very loud and obnoxious and frankly drunk people right down from us. I believe I saw one of their reviews while signing in, so ignore those. Over all, I would recommend stopping here for good food and drinks and excellent service. 10/10 read more

Well, I had a GREAT time. My husband is always on the lookout for a good shepherd's pie and he enjoyed this immensely. The Reuben egg rolls are excellent and on sale during happy hour. The fish and chips are very well done, flaky and delicious. The service is excellent and the iced tea is fragrant, which is odd, but very delicious and refreshing. I raise an eyebrow to an establishment that calls itself a pub. So admittedly, I was a bit curious yet hesitant to try this place out. I walked in, was quickly greeting by a waitress saying to sit wherever i pleased. We sat at by the front window. The ambience was similar to that of a pub i would go to back home in Ireland. The fireplace on the TV was a cozy fun touch. Our waitress was wonderful and was quick to check in but not overbearing. Impeccable service. The food: I ordered the Grumpy Burger. It's a 1/2lb burger that i was pleasantly surprised by. It was delicious! To me, so far, it's the best burger in the square - hands down! It came with chips (fries) that I enjoyed with their garlic aioli by request and malt vinegar which is on the table. Amazing. The menu is accurate to that you would see in Ireland/Northern Ireland (i.e. bangers and mash, potato leek soup). It's nice to see an establishment bring me the comforts of home with accuracy. Started off with the mini sliders, they come 3 to the order, chose provolone as the cheese and those were yummy. Next up was an order of the fish and chips with mushy peas. The portion was underwhelming but the flavor was great. I'm not the biggest fan of peas in general, I didn't like them, but maybe my opinion on it should be taken with a grain of salt. This place has just opened but it's very quickly become one of my favorites. Georgetown was in desparate need of a British pub and The Grumpy George delivers! Went there shortly after opening but it was a day the kitchen was unexpectedly closed. No worries - we sat at the bar and had black and tans. We haven't had proper black and tans since we left Boston 4yrs ago and it felt like a homecoming. (They also had Old Speckled Hen on draft as well as cans of Boddingtons). Tonight we popped by to try our luck for dinner. It was only 6p but the place was already fairly packed. The hostess said the tables were booked until 8p with rezzies. And she was so apologetic and really wanted to try and make things work! She sincerely didn't want to turn anyone away... We assured her it was no problem (and actually a good problem for them to have). There happened to be a couple of seats that just opened at the bar - first come, first serve. She very quickly cleared it so we could sit. Customer service is definitely a priority here. The staff is hustling behind that bar! We were quickly attended to (I had their old fashioned - it was great). We ordered the fish & chips with the side of beans and the meat pastry stew thing with mashed and carrots. (I can't remember it's official name but it has a puff pastry on top). The fish is so light and crispy. (Sometimes folks over batter and it feels heavy and oily... this is definitely not the case. It almost felt like I was cracking the top of a creme brûlée). The sirloin stew was super savory. The gravy on the mash is amazing - I could easily drink a glass of it. And the carrots were super caramelized with a good bite. The only thing kind of mid were the beans (but im not a huge fan of british beans to begin with... next time I'll try the mushy peas). Finished the meal with a smore's espresso martini which was excellent. We can't wait to go back and make this a regular hang. It's got a wonderful cozy and jovial vibe. Definitely make rezzies if you can and show them some love. It's so wonderful to have a place like this added to the Georgetown restaurant scene! read more

I really like this place, the only thing that I have to say about it that's a negative experience.. it's smells pretty bad of fish. (Like poorly stored and bad) I understand that this place is a pub that sells fish.. but the fish aroma that takes over the entire place is pretty gross. The service has always been great there. But every time I go in there, it reminds me of fiesta the supermarket where it smacks you in the face with the fishy smell. Maybe it's the air ventilation and the fact that the building is pretty old. I still like going there and I have no intentions on stopping just won't frequent the place very often. read more

I would give the Grumpy George a 4.5/5 stars, but Yelp doesn't let me give half stars. I really like this pub and restaurant. The server, who was also the manager was SO nice. She definitely made me feel beyond welcome. I had the bangers and mash, as well as a side of the glazed carrots. I think the food was great, the only thing that I would have preferred is if the onion gravy was a bit thicker. The sticky toffee pudding is FANTASTIC. I had high hopes for this establishment. The "unsatisfactory" health inspection didn't steer me away. I had to try the ($22) fish and chips. It didn't impress. The fries were overdone and a small portion. The beans were fine, but I can get those at H-E-B. The best part of the meal was the tartar sauce, and that's not a good thing. The wait for our food to be prepared was also long, even though the staff didn't seem terribly busy. The atmosphere is standard for a bar/grill. I liked the music. If the food was better I could at least give three stars. Edit: The owner was quick to respond which I appreciate. Just discovered Grumpy Georges. We had a delicious meal here. Fish 'n Chips & mushy peas. Cooked in beef tallow - Brilliant. No old nasty vegetable oil. The interior had the pub vibe and looked great too. Warning on the impracticable non-functioning vinegar bottles on the tables. Sploshed a ton onto our plates making our fab fish n chips nearly inedible. The interior has a great pub vibe. You can tell they put their heart into this place. Gorgeous George green glass pendants above the bar, vintage milk glass along the seating row, and moody black walls. I'm sure it's even better and moodier at night. We give them 4 stars in good faith that they'll come to their senses and get right & proper malt vinegar dispensers for the tables. We'll happily bump it to 5 stars and amend when they do as we love our malt vinegar but are not willing to sacrifice our meals again. We'll return in the evening next time. The fish and chips were better than most supposed "English fish and chips" found in America. I was happy they had Strongbow cider. My only complaint was the Scotch egg. It was over fried to the point of being burned. Way too crunchy and I'm guessing microwaved before being served. The place felt close to a British pub. Had a small dart area in the back. Wished there had been English football or rugby playing on TVs. I would give it a 7 out of 10. I'll definitely visit again and recommend to my friends. I suggest adding more "British pub" regalia and signage inside. read more

We decided to try this place out after seeing it on Kitchen Nightmares. It was our friends anniversary and since they were married in the UK and she is English what better place to celebrate. We ordered the Crispy Shrimp and Scotch Egg as apps. The Shrimp was delicious. The Scotch Egg was a bit over cooked, but it did not go to waste. We all ordered the Fish & Chips, I mean how can you not order Fish & Chips at a Pub. We all agreed it was the best we've found in the Austin area and the fish portion was more than enough. Stopped in after grabbing lunch in another city. Ordered an old fashioned and a Pimm's cup. Both drinks were good. The old fashioned was made with half of their normal amount of simple syrup. Good thing because any more it would have been out of balance and far too sweet. The Pimm's cup was very good. Tried the Pastrami cured wild salmon. It was an excellent starter plate. Bread tasted fresh. Well worth the price of admission. If you're in the Georgetown area it's worth the stop. read more

My husband and I are big fans of Kitchen Nightmares. We visited the restaurant this past Saturday and had an amazing experience! The service was excellent, especially considering how packed the place was, and we even got to enjoy some live music later in the evening. The food was delicious! We ordered the shrimp appetizer and the fish and chips for our main course. They were the best fish and chips we've ever had--and my husband has been to some of the top spots in the UK. We're planning to return this weekend to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday. Looking forward to dining at The Grumpy George again soon! read more

We decided to try grumpy george last night because we knew they were revamped by chef Ramsey. The location is nice. Small menu so limited choices. Our table ordered either the smash burger or the fish and chips. We waited over 45 minutes for food. When looking at the menu I chose smash burger because on the menu I didn't see any of my allergy issues on the list of items. Unfortunately I am allergic to oinions and had no idea their "burger sauce" was basically onions. They really should call is onion jam not burger sauce. The fries were good, but that is hard to mess up and our friends that got the fish and chips said they were good but not knock your socks off good.
