This is such an iconic horror movie house, so we decided to make a small detour on our way to Fredericksburg to check it out. As horror fans, it was definitely a fun bucket-list stop. Unfortunately, the experience started off a little rough. We waited quite a while to be seated while several staff members walked past us. Eventually, someone asked what we needed, even though the sign clearly said to wait for the hostess. We were told to wait a little longer before finally being seated. Thankfully, our waitress completely turned the experience around. She was friendly, attentive, and efficient. She brought our drinks out quickly, took our order right away, and made us feel welcome. We each ordered two tacos, and they were delicious! They're much bigger than they look, so if you're not very hungry, one taco is probably enough. After our meal, we asked if we could explore the upstairs area, and our server happily said yes and encouraged us to look around the restaurant at all of the unique horror memorabilia and decorations. Overall, I'm glad we made the stop because it was a fun experience and crossed a bucket-list destination off our list. While I'm not sure I'd come back just for the food, I'd definitely recommend visiting if you're a horror fan or passing through the area. read more

Hooper's is one of the most unique restaurant experiences I've ever had! It's inside the restored Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) house from the movie, and walking up to it feels so unreal. Once you're inside, you can explore a lot of the house and it blew me away how much you're able to walk around and see. There's art everywhere, tons of movie memorabilia, and it kinda feels like a Texas Chainsaw museum that just happens to serve food, which is pretty awesome. The theme isn't subtle either (in the best way). One area had a bar with a severed head behind it! There are so many little details, displays and photo moments that other horror fans are going to be obsessed with too! Even the menu is fun, with stuff like the Chicken Slaughter sandwich and the Hitchhiker's grilled chicken. I know it's cheesy, but I love it, especially when the whole place is packed with memorabilia. Food was pretty good too. The experience is definitely the main event, but the food held its own as a bar and grill, and mixing that with how cool the place is made it feel like a full stop, not just a novelty visit. Service was fine but not super standout. There were only a couple staff members actively helping people while others were cleaning up, and everyone was nice enough, just not really "above and beyond." Our food also took a while for a burger and a turkey sandwich, but honestly those are my only real complaints, and I'm only even mentioning it because I'm also here to talk about the food. It was great regardless of the wait. Upstairs has a few more Leatherface items plus some gory/spooky decor, and there's a cool little location map where you can stick a pin in to indicate how far you've visited from! They also have a creepy skin looking guest book to sign, which is such a perfect touch. One real warning though: it's an old house. In Texas, Prepare for the heat, and I mean that seriously. If you want to explore outside too, come ready. I had a UV-blocking umbrella and a face mister and I was still feeling it. Sunglasses for the grounds are a must too. Also, there's a kitty living on the porch named Tuxie, and he's a precious little buddy who loves attention. Make sure you say hi. I cannot say enough good about this place. It's a little bit of a hike from Austin. However I'm noticing here everything is 2 hours from where you want to be. Anyway this is the house from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. What better repurpose than a bar and restaurant. They have merch for sale at a little half bar in the next room. All the shirts are hanging in the hall when you first come in. A bunch of cool designs. Only issue was my friend is a small and they don't sell smalls. I guess it's the whole everything is bigger in Texas. He was able to get a poster though. There was a 30 minute wait but it flew by. You can walk all around the property and also go upstairs to see some life size mannequins of family members. It was such a cool experience. Staff is super nice and accommodating. So finally we get to the food. Delicious. I got the chicken slaughter sandwich. It was huge. We also got the artichoke dip that was kinda thick like cream cheese. We came for the Texas chainsaw massacre nostalgia, but stayed for the good food and drinks. This restaurant is partially made from the original house in which this horror classic was filmed. They have fun decor, movie, posters, and other related memorabilia up throughout the restaurant. A group of 10 of us ate here tonight in the room where the notorious dinner scene was filmed. Most of my pictures are of the place, but the food and drinks were satisfying too. They offer standard American fare and our waitress did a great job juggling our orders all while being efficient and kind. I made a reservation online easily which is recommended because they can get busy, especially on a Saturday. I tried their artichoke dip which was decadent and served with chips. I got so full from that that I just had a stuffed baked potato as my main course which was really good too. Their beers were reasonably priced even for drafts. They also have fun specialty cocktails aptly themed to the history of the restaurant. We're planning to go back another time for brunch and to enjoy the town of Kingsland a little more. We were treated to a gorgeous Sunset on our visit but left before we lost too much light given we all drove from San Antonio and didn't want to be on the smaller hill country roads too late at night. We passed a few deer so you do want to keep an eye out for the local animals on the way there and back if you're coming from a different city. read more

All right, I was so excited to come to this place. I had heard how cool it was and I'm a huge horror fanatic so to know that I was in the actual house from the Texas chainsaw massacre was awesome. When you first walk in, you have a bar area which is really cool and then the two dining areas which are really nice as well. The host was really nice and let us pick our seats in whichever dining area. Our waitress Lisa was just the sweetest person in the world. She was very attentive and even gave us a breakdown on the history of the house and told us how good the food was, which she was totally correct. We got the turkey club sandwich, which was on multigrain bread and was so delicious. All the ingredients on it tasted so fresh. We also got the fried mushrooms, which let me tell you are to die for they were battered and so good. I could eat those every day. And the ranch they came with tasted almost homemade I didn't ask if it was, but it was so good. We also got the corn chowder soup, which had chicken in it, and that was the cup, which is still big and very tasty. They had a cocktail list and some good wine and let me tell you it was very well priced and they do a very good pour. Overall, great experience at this house. Definitely southern cooking, which was delicious. And really cool just to be able to experience and see everything. You were allowed to go upstairs and see all the pop-ups of the horror movie which is great. Definitely add this stuff to your list or just make the drive out for it. It is worth it. read more

We had a bit of a hiccup when we first arrived as we asked if there were other tables other than when you first walk in and they said either share a table with someone or go outside so we were just about to leave and my daughter happen to walk around the corner and saw another dining room and another lady told her we could sit there. So just so y'all know when you first walk in that's not the only place to sit. Now moving onto the service, Jessica was absolutely delightful. She was super friendly. That is everything we needed. I get that it's summer and a busy time, but to wait for 30 minutes to even be greeted by a waitress while everyone around us was greeted kinda sucked. Felt really unseen and unheard. Took an additional 15 minutes to get drinks and order, at this point we were all over it, but stuck it out, we were hungry. Should have left, everything was very under whelming - dry chicken, no seasoning, missing the cilantro ranch & jalapeños on the big bird. A solid spot for some good grub! We got fried pickles to start, which were delicious! There are fried jalapeños mixed into the pickles, which I personally loved. The jalapeños added just enough heat and complimented the pickles well. I got the grilled shrimp po boy, and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Definitely built as a touristy type movie -decorated restaurant inside a lovely old farm house with the Antler Inn next door and Junction Prime and IDK Backyard Grill, and Kingsland Coffee. Not sure if all these are owned by the same but it is a venue for sure. Now to Hoopers restaurant. Named after Tobe Hooper director of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there are a variety of rooms. First service is VERY SLOW. So come with lots of patience in mind and best not to have any fixed schedule. Restaurant is clean and well furnished. They have an expansive menu. The regular coffee is very nice. The latte is very good once you get it. Takes a while and you might have to ask about it to remind them. They have a bar area where they also serve food. Nice, but kinda "echoy" so opt for an individual table if available. Picture your grandma's house with every room for dining + Chainsaw pics. It is interesting to see. Now to the food, Hubby got the country Benedict served with cheese grits. He said "very tasty" I got the "spicy" chicken (not spicy at all) and biscuit with gravy and eggs. I had to add salt and pepper to just about everything but it looked great. The banana nut bread was okay a bit dry and the edges were way over browned see pics. So would I come back? Hummm not sure really. I think their wait staff is either overwhelmed even when not full or they are very new to this. Not sure. They were pleasant but just so very discombobulated. They also never checked on us. Had to go up to the bar or find a person to help with coffee etc. So saddly they for now they get a 2.5 stars. The place has so much potential I really hated to go with a 2.5 so I will round up to 3. But burnt bread, very little seasoning, the really bad service and voices bouncing off the walls such you have to yell at the person opposite you is just where we landed. I was scared upon arrival because I happened on this place by chance, and when I realized where I was....yikes! (Read their backstory and you'll see why! - It's the house where the movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre was filmed!) But, I was gonna die anyway....of starvation so I went for it! And, spoiler alert, I survived and left plenty full to boot. Don't go here if you are looking for a huge selection of beer on tap or the best margarita you've ever had. But, your favorite bottles are available and there was a full bar. Burgers, meatloaf, pastas-there's options on the menu. I had the BLT which comes topped with melted whiye cheese and avacado on it. Yummy! Easily splittable if you also get an extra side. Fries that come with can be swapped out so I went with grilled asparagus and it was great. Bartender gave me some lemon wedges to use for an extra shot of flavor. I wasn't dining alone so we also tried the fried mushrooms as an app (really really really fried but ok) and added the mac 'n cheese side - a creamy bargain at only $5. There's a nice big porch or indoor dining and there's a big lawn for lawn games or letting kiddos run before dinner. Its a big ole white house with forest green trim on a quiet street with big shady trees all around. I took my husband and father to brunch 12/28/25, and the grounds of the building were unkept. The waitress which has been there forever was polite. Her service was ok until she brought us our food and could not hold back her smokers cough. Gross me out. We ordered breakfast and its really hard to mess up breakfast, but the plate i had , did not have any flavor and the english muffin was soggy. My dads biscuits were burned and my husband had the carnitas which were so dry he could not eat them. It was a total waste of $65.00. The only good thing about it was being able to visit with my dad and the glass of water. And i didn't even get asked if I needed a refill. Saw this very cute area all lit up while driving at night, so we decided to check it out the following day. The sign said it was open but the front door was locked so I had to go through the sports bar area. Walked to the coffee room and stood there for quite a while and no one ever showed up. The entire time I was on the premises, not one person acknowledged me or my family to see if we needed help or to be seated. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, Brisket Hash, Steak and Eggs, and Pancakes with Strawberries. I must say, the chicken fried steak here might just be the best I've ever had. It was super thick and seasoned well. The brisket hash was super filling and had so much brisket and potatoes! The steak was cooked perfectly, and the pancakes came with fresh strawberries. They quite literally do not skimp out on the serving size here. You will leave with a full stomach and leftovers. The service was just as stellar as the food. It was a "birthday road trip weekend" (as in this past weekend - Saturday was my birthday!) and we decided to stay in one of the train cars on The Antlers Inn property. Hooper's is located on King Ct off RM 1431 in Kingsland, which took me a little over an hour's drive from Austin. After watching the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie and playing the TCM game, this was a place we definitely wanted to check out in person. Although the location of the building has been moved from the filming location, the building is still the same. They've done a great job cleaning up the place after the Sawyers left! There's four main indoor eating areas with one being the bar area as well as an outdoor patio area. The bar and host counter are the only areas that have movie memorabilia, with the bar having the most items. Hooper's has a pretty good menu selection with breakfast, lunch, and dinner items as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and the food is really good! The entire staff was very friendly and patient while we looked around to take it all in. Although it's about an hour drive from Austin, it's definitely worth the trip for the memorabilia and food! We have been coming here for years when it was The Grand. My husband plays golf in Kingsland so we always come for brunch. Inside is remodeled and it looks great but I'm a norm and raised Austinite loved it before. The menu has changed slightly. When it was the grand it would take 1-1.5 hour wait for our food after ordering with or without reservation. Hoping that it was going to get better with new ownership. No it's the same. We come on the weekends of course and aware it's super busy. I love the food and service is great but if you are willing to wait I suggest do not come on an empty stomach because you will get HANGRY with the wait. Husband got the spicy chicken and he loved it! I worked a fried chicken place in high school and that batter was made from scratch! I got the country Benedict. Gravy and biscuit were perfect but didn't care for the sausage. Visited July 23rd 2024 If you are a movie buff, this is the stop to go. It's the LITERAL house from 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' like of course I am stopping in to see it. Now I did order food, a chicken sandwich, the fried mushrooms, 2 french fries and 2 drinks. The mushrooms were super crunchy, the fries were amazing, but the chicken sandwich was a bit dry and fell apart rather easily. Outside of the food, I had the most fun exploring the building itself. The waitstaff were very friendly and pointed out that I could go upstairs as I waited for my food. Lets just say the upstairs was super fun, had a lil sign in book and some more paraphernalia. I won't go into details, you should just go see for yourself.
