There aren't too many places left that feel like going into the restaurant downtown for breakfast and this is one of those places. You can smell the coffee as soon as you walk in! I am 56 years old, and I haven't been to Blue Bonnet Cafe since I was probably 11 or 12. Maybe even younger. But I REMEMBER Blue Bonnet Cafe. I remember this little cafe in Marble Falls known for its homemade pies. My grandfather loved stopping here, and sometimes he'd bring pies all the way back to West Texas for us. Oh, how we loved those pies. So we're talking about more than 40 years of nostalgia wrapped up in this place for me. When I recently had the opportunity to make the drive back to Marble Falls, I was genuinely excited. I couldn't wait to sit down at Blue Bonnet again, have a chicken fried steak and, most importantly, get my hands on that PIE. And I'll give credit where it's due. I ordered the chicken fried steak plate, and the chicken fried steak was just as good as I remembered it. Crispy, tender, comforting -- exactly the kind of old-school Texas cafe food I'd been hoping for. The gravy, after adding in some salt and lots of pepper was creamy and perfect. The sides? Well... The green beans tasted canned, and I'm pretty sure those mashed potatoes were the red-skinned powdered variety you can buy at Costco. You know what? I was fine with it. It is what it is. The meal was still pretty darn good, and none of that was why I'd driven back after all these years anyway. I WAS HERE FOR THE PIE. After we ate, I ordered a slice of fudge and a slice of lemon meringue to take home and share. Later, I opened the container. And my smile fell. What in the SCHOOL CAFETERIA had been put into this Styrofoam container and peddled off as Blue Bonnet Cafe lemon meringue pie?! This was not the pie I remembered. The lemon filling was this unnaturally yellow, gelatinous drudge. The crust didn't taste remotely like a made-from-scratch pie crust. And that beautiful homemade meringue I remembered, piled up and lovingly browned on top? Gone. Surely the fudge pie would save this childhood reunion. It did not. Another cheap, flavorless crust with some sort of fudge-like concoction filling it. And THAT is when this stopped being about whether I liked a couple slices of pie. I had carried a memory of Blue Bonnet Cafe around with me for more than four decades. A little cafe, my grandfather bringing pies home to West Texas, and all of us being so excited when he did. Those memories are still wonderful. I just wish the pies I'd brought home this time bore some resemblance to them. Blue Bonnet Cafe, you gave a promise to me... And you broke it. You broke it. Service was fast and friendly and we did not have to wait on anything. It's a neat spot to grab some food. We picked up pie slices to go after being recommended by several people. We got the pecan pie, cherry pie, and lemon cream pie. The pecan pie and cherry pie have great flavor and I must say the pecan pie was my favorite of the three! The lemon cream unfortunately didn't have a lot of zest and was almost bland. We took a trip and visiting this well known and local favorite spot in Marble Falls, Texas. Wowza, it was absolutely perfect. We tried the chicken sandwich and grilled chicken plate. I chose buttered leaf spinach, side salad and pinto beans. This came out hot and so flavorful! I think the beans may have been some of these I have had.. It had a diner vibe, which made live it more. If you are ever up that way stop by and give them a try. Oh and line to get in was out the door and around the building a little but everyone in line kept telling us it is worth it. I recommend an umbrella to block out the central Texas sun while you wait, but you won't need it for too long because the staff moves fast. You'll be inside in no time. We always stop here for lunch after a visit to Sweet Berry Farm, and there is without fail always a line literally out the door (which moves pretty quickly, usually). We visited last weekend and were seated after a short wait. Our server was friendly and understanding of our party's dietary restrictions. She helpfully pointed out options for vegetarians (slim pickings there). The food overall is very average and mostly fried. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and it was totally flavorless. This was just before lunchtime and it was crowded as usual as I had not been there in many years, but remembered how great it was. We ordered the chicken fried steak with double spinach, and fried okra, and some of the no sugar added apple pie. When we received our meal, the chicken fried steak tasted like it was cooked in old oil really bad after taste. The gravy had no flavor at all, but I have to say the good. We received our pie. My order: Coconut Meringue pie Lemon cream pie Vegetable with cheese omelette Grits on the side I usually don't like pies but these were not close to the regular dry pies like the apple pies. These were creamy and the base was not thick. Loved the lemon cream pie, especially the after taste. Grits came out bland, obviously, and added some seasons. This spot is a famous classic for a reason :) It's a no-frills diner with homey service and old school prices you cannot beat. BF had the ground beef taco salad ($10.29) and loved it. I had a blueberry pancake with bacon ($5.99 + .99) and it was also really good - fluffy but also kind of doughy, with a perfect baking soda tang. Bacon was delicious and fatty too. The pie - oh my! Of course we ate at the Blue Bonnet Cafe when we visited Marble Falls. An icon since 1929 and featured in so many TV shows, magazines and "must go" lists, we wanted to check it (and their famous pies) out for ourselves. Even picking a time we thought the crowd would be lighter, the line was out the door. If the same happens to you, don't let a little line deter you. Once inside the door you snake single file down a short hallway and around corner but they've got a system that works. So said the very nice hostess when I asked how she kept the line moving so quickly. Daily specials include enchiladas (and homemade salsa) on Fridays. I was almost a taker of said special but then I spied my favorite never-see-it-on-the-menu meal and I only had eyes for the liver and onions!! They serve complimentary bisquits and cornbread (yep, its a country kinda place) but surprisingly no sweet tea. Sides include mashed red potatoes, corn on the cob, pinto beans and buttered spinach. I thought I was at grandma's! Other than onions being diced and not sliced, I was happy with my meal. I was very very happy with the service. And the pie? Had to take it to go! Delicious coconut meringue. It didn't disappoint a few hours later. One thing I liked about Blue Bonnet Cafe was how everyone felt at home there. I saw a guy in a Metallica tshirt next to a table of seniors who were seated next to a family with little kids. I heard snippets of other languages and lots of laughter and saw ballcaps from rival colleges and universities and various political affiliations. Stopped in to get a few pieces of pie. It was recommended by the front desk at our resort. The hardest part is deciding which pie you want. The cost for two slices vs the whole pie leaned us toward the whole pie. It did not disappoint! The meringue was light and super high (we got the coconut meringue pie) and the filling was nice and had just the right amount of coconut. The crust, flakey and delicate. Restaurant was a step back in time and the staff were very nice and helpful. We will stop back for a full meal so we can appreciate the ambiance more.
