Lockhart has to be my favorite Terry Black's Barbecue location. Went with my family of 14, and the service was incredible. The moment we walked in, the experience was fantastic. One of the highlights was getting to walk by the pits and chat with the staff. They even gave us a little tour and explained the smoking process. You can tell they take a lot of pride in what they do. We ordered the Large Family Pack for the group, which consists of 6 lbs of meat and 5 quarts of sides. We also added a beef rib to the order, and there was more than enough food for everyone. In fact, we still had leftovers. We tried the brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, turkey, and jalapeno cheese sausage. For sides, mac & cheese, Mexican rice, potato salad, cream corn, and cole slaw. Everything was delicious, but my personal favorites were the cream corn and beef ribs. I've been to a few Terry Black's locations, but Lockhart is the one I'd gladly go back to again and again. Great barbecue, great people, and a great experience.
Texas BBQ hit home!!! I grew up in the area knowing and loving smoked meats and Lockhart was known as the best smoked brisket and bbq. Every bbq joint in Lockhart can hold their own for special reasons. I moved to Las Vegas over 14 years ago. My husband really wanted to try Terry Black's. I was a bit iffy because of course I knew the bbq in Lockhart but the vibe was really cool and the way bbq should be eaten so I gave in. The huge smokers are outdoors and you can see the action. They put the wood they use to smoke on display and they have indoor, outdoor covered seating and outdoor uncovered seating. On Sunday they even had a live band playing outdoors. We walked inside and started with the sides. The Mac and cheese looked good and I like the larger noodles, cream corn and potato salad were our other two sides. We also ordered peach cobbler for dessert. Then we got to the bbq. There was no ask if we wanted lean or moist. You are just going to get 'darn good' brisket. Today is not the day to worry about calories. Our meat guy was super friendly and cut our meats perfectly. He was very generous & genuinely excited about us trying our food. We ordered half of each of the regular and jalapeno cheese sausage, & a beef rib. This beef rib was the size of my forearm! I tried to say nevermind because that thing was a Flintstone bone but my son said we could eat it. On to our seats and eats.....first pull of the brisket with my fork and it was literally melting. I could barely pick it up with my fork. Well this is why you should use your hand! Dang.....I am a Texas girl and this place is hands down the BEST brisket I have ever had!! Just....WOW!!! I had a hard time eating it with bbq sauce as it was cooked to perfection and didn't need a thing. It was the star of the plate! The HUGE beef rib was good and came right off the bone. It was a bit salty on the outside parts for us but still delicious. The sausage was incredible. It melted in our mouths. I didn't even know meat could do that. The flavors were amazing. The sides held their own as the Mac and cheese was so creamy and didn't have that cheddar grit. I would have to say it is my new favorite Mac and cheese. I took a bite of my cream corn and was amazed at the flavor. I was expecting a corn flavor with a flavor thickened sauce but this was a flavor bomb & I was in love. The potato salad was good but not my favorite. The other two sides did just fine on their own. I hate to say I didn't really like the peach cobbler. I grew up with peach trees in our yard and my southern mom made a smoked peach cobbler that no one has ever been able to duplicate. I didn't have any problem going back to eating that brisket as my dessert though. The BBQ sauce.....oh gosh. They have 3 different ones: original, spicy, and sweet. They were all great. Nothing overly tangy or too powerful to mask the meat. It is a perfect compliment to your bbq if you decide to use it. Trust me! You will be just fine without it also. This is the best bbq place in Texas. I will be sad to go back home to Vegas and will wait for my next trip to Texas just so I can come to Terry Black's again.
Amazingly delicious meat candy!! The ribs were dripping w juice when pulled out of their foil to be sliced up for my eating pleasure. Eating here was an experience that I will cherish for sure. Best bbq I've ever had!!! Enjoyed smacking my lips on the pork ribs and brisket. The sides were also top notch (Coleslaw was superior to all the rest, green beans were seasoned to perfection, and the rice was very tasty). The others in my party really enjoyed their meals. Only negative comment in my group is that they wished they had ice cream for their cobbler-- haha!! Very friendly and fast service.
This is my favorite barbecue in Texas so far! I recently tried the Texas monthly number one pick and wasn't impressed. You guys are still king of the brisket in my eyes. Couple things I enjoy about this place. Is that even if there's a line you still get in pretty quick. I would say this place is worth the wait. Always smells great when I walk in and always clean and up to par. Keep up the great work here! Highly recommend!
Food is amazing, as always! Veronica and Adrian were so nice and helped us order. 10/10 come here!!
This is the place!!! Smoky, savory brisket indoors & out, some of the very best I've found in my Texas travels. Fall-off-the-bone short ribs & sausage are also nice with their house-made cornbread (warm, moist, single-serve because I'm not sharing). An excellent roadside stop or venue for larger parties. Thanks very much for the tour - will be happy to make a return!
Fresh, REAL Texas BBQ! Tons of cold beer, atmosphere beef, barbecue sausage, ribs, and lots of sides, including banana pudding and peach cobbler. Non-smoking. & NO bar But do have cooler full of ice cold bottle beer. They also have cool merch for sale.
As we prepared this morning to leave New Braunfels and head home to Fort Worth I was thinking we'd stop at the great Miller's Smokehouse in Belton. Very solid true, offset smoker cooked cue. But then my old pumpkin head synapses fired and I thought Chuck! Now's the chance to visit Lockhart and see what Chuck Charnichart has got going on as she's in TM's 2025 Top 50. But alas she is cooking only on Saturday and Sunday at her place, Barb's, there in Lockhart. I've been to Kreuz, and also the original Blacks back before Mike and Mark opened the Terry Black's there. As we're big fan's of Terry Black's in Dallas we know it's solid, offset pit smoked BBQ so we decided to see what the Lockhart store is like. So happy we did. It's what you'd expect from a Terry Black's. Very cool, attractive, and well designed restaurant layout. Pretty awesome, really. You enter passing the pit room containing their six humongous pits, all fired up and cooking away. This store does not have a bar as does the Dallas location. Beer's are on ice at the beginning of the line and there is wine here but only by the bottle I think. The gal at the cutting board was so sweet and she knows what she's doing with a brisket and a knife. For starters she tossed a burnt end taster on the tray. It was off the chain delicious... world class bark, peppery, rich smoke...melt in your mouth brisket perfection. Wow. We never do sides. Just gets in the way of what we're after at a great BBQ joint. We ordered 1/2 lb. brisket from the point, 1/2 lb. from the flat, and 1/2 lb of pork ribs. Oh and a jalapeño and cheese sausage. Brisket and ribs were BBQ Nirvana. I was not crazy about the sausage. Does this have beef in it? Didn't ask. Anywho, Terry Black's has never disappointed. So glad we visited. Believe it or not, we have not yet been to the new store in Fort Worth. Gonna remedy that.
You don't stumble into Terry Black's by accident, you arrive hungry and hopeful, and you leave full with the meat sweats. From the jump, this place hits you with the scent of hardwood and slow-burning promise. The brisket is the headliner, and rightfully so; deep bark, fat that renders like butter, and a smoke ring that whispers Texas with every bite. It doesn't need sauce, but if you must, go light. The HUGE beef rib walks that tightrope between tender and structured, with just enough bite to make you respect it. The jalapeño cheddar sausage? Bold. Loud. Beautiful. Like biting into a firecracker wrapped in meat. And don't sleep on the sides, mac n' cheese that hugs your soul, and potato salad that tastes like someone's grandmother still makes it by hand. The whole experience feels both timeless and immediate, like you're eating something sacred and utterly now. Five stars because this isn't hype its heritage, served on butcher paper with zero pretense. Terry Black's doesn't need to flex. It is the flex.
We made a special trip to Lockhart for me and my long time coming trip to the BBQ capital of Texas. After considerable reading, I settled on Terry Blacks. There is a TB in Dallas (Deep Ellum) that I enjoy a lot and have been several time so the decision came down to it and the original Blacks. In the end, the Yelp reviews and ratings were a bit better for TB so off we went. We arrived and I was treated to a mini tour of the pits by the pit master. Loved it. I got to ask all sorts of questions that I was wondering about for years. He told me on a slow day they sell 140-160 briskets and a busy day the number is closer to 360. Wow, That's a lot of beef. We talked for a good 20 minutes and he was not in a rush to see me go. I think he enjoyed talking to someone who is into food and BBQ. We talked sourcing, cattle parts, cooking times, etc. It was bliss. After the tour, we proceeded to the restaurant. First up are the sides and we ordered Cole slaw, potato salad, and beans. I am familiar with all from the Dallas TB but one difference was that the beans did not have brisket whereas the Dallas TB does. On to the meats. The wife read reviews and decided she had to try to beef rib. A huge piece of meat with a healthy price tag, hers came in at $50+. She tried her best but could not finish is all and we had no refrigeration so sadly we had to throw a significant portion away. I over-ordered despite my vow not to, and got brisket, ribs, and sausage. The brisket was a disappointment and was quite dry. Sauce could not save it. Maybe I should not have asked for lean. But it was not particularly good brisket, which is odd given the fact that I just had a tour that focused mainly on brisket. In Dallas, I usually get the regular sausage but here I tried the jalapeño cheddar. To me, it was juicy and very smoky, but it was really greasy and not pleasant to the palate. The ribs were fall off the bone good and the best part of the meal. I am not rib lover but these were excellent ribs. Overall, my dream trip was kind of a disappointment. Maybe I over-hyped the experience in my mind. I don't know. At this point, my impression is that I really enjoyed the mini-tour and that was special. But in terms of food, the Dallas location has better BBQ. It pains me to say that. There is inside and outside seating. The ambience is Texas BBQ without being corny. The 4 stars is for the total experience, not necessarily the food alone.
OUTSTANDING! Visiting from Boston and out of my element. Everyone there was very welcoming and patient (special shout-out to Veronica ), walking me through how and what to order (I was so not disappointed in anything - especially the ribs and the mac & cheese), AND then they gave me a tour of their smokehouse which runs 24/7! Everyone who works there seemed really glad to do so and that made it even better. I had a Sampler Platter with more meat than I eat in a month with coleslaw and mac & cheese. A lady at a neighboring table suggested I get the creamed corn next time as it was the best she'd ever had. Ambiance was great, with a/c seating inside and warmer tables outside. Just go already .
Service was friendly and quick, brisket and sausage were tasty, indoor and outdoor seating were pleasant, but... the beef rib, the one they have the customer ring a bell for when ordered? It was overcooked - parts of it were tough and dry. Also the back was way over salted, and I speak as someone who is regularly accused of over seasoning food. The beef ribs at the Salt Lick in Round Rock are better. Also one of their bathrooms was closed off with a "under maintenance " sign. I'd suggest the pork ribs instead, they looked pretty juicy.
Amazing bbq and phenomenal service. Gave us some turkey to try and it was delicious!! Their banana pudding is to die for!

Truly the best barbecue I've had in my entire life! And I'm almost 60 so that says a lot. We were in Texas for a business trip and decided to rent a car to drive to Buc-ee's. On our way to Buc-ee's, we passed this Terry Black's location. The one in Austin was on our bucket list, but we considered ourselves. Super lucky to have found this one by happenstance. There were four of us, so we ordered the family meal. I think we got 3 lb of mixed meat and five sides. You can pick a dessert as One of your sides! Before we ordered our food, we were given a really wonderful tour of the smoking pit by one of the pitmasters. I just love that these gentlemen were for sure encouraged to bring us in and show us how it's done. For our meat we chose turkey, sausage, and beef. For our sides we chose creamed corn, cobbler, potato salad, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Don't tell my mom but that creamed corn was the best I've ever had. Even better than my mothers. If I ever back in Austin, I will make a point of driving back to this. Terry Blacks. read more

June 9, 2026. 10:45am. Doors opened at 10:30 and there were already several people eating. BBQ master showed me his work (see photo). Absolutely, hands down, the best brisket ever. Our family typically goes to the Terry Blacks on Barton Springs but we decided to switch it up this weekend and take the trip out to Lockhart! The ambiance was incredible. We loved the setup and all of the outdoor seating. The fans outside were a great touch with this Texas heat. We are a group of 6 so we went with the small family pack. It was the perfect amount. We got brisket, turkey and 5 sides. My one note is that the turkey and some sides were cold. Other than that it was a perfect meal! The Meat was juicy and the sides complimented the meat well. If you want to skip the line downtown definitely make the short trip out to this location! read more

We brought a team of about a dozen men and some scattered family members in tonight. It's a unique set up, and the staff at the first counter where you select the sides are very nice. We all ate and were very satisfied. It's a few seats inside and plenty of outdoor seating. Not too much for decor but that's not what this is about. read more

We came here on a Sunday with my parents. There is a small paved parking lot out front with a large dirt lot in the back. We got here around one and the line was a little out the door, but it went pretty quick. There is a good amount of seating inside with a lot more outside. My wife and I shared a tray of turkey, sausage, and chopped beef with sides of creamed corn and Mac and cheese. We also got pickles and onions. My parents got some other stuff, but mainly the beef rib which on its own cost as much as our whole tray. Everything was incredible by itself, but there were a few bottles of barbecue sauces on the tables read more
Out from Utah and finding all the great barbecue absolutely included a stop here. I know some people think they are just a. New kid on the block and not like the other older places?!? And amazing meal!!! read more
First time at this location. Normally I go to the original Black's. With that said, I have been wanting to try this place for a while. BBQ in general has become very expensive with prices at 22,33 dollars a pound for a variety of meats. It's almost priced out is folks working for a living. $45 bucks for lunch, shoowwhee Boy! Green beans good but served almost cold Healthy portion Pinto beans Enough brisket in the beans, If I had known, I wouldn't have ordered any more brisket. Healthy portion Turkey Was ok but I like more flavor Brisket was standard fare to me nothing spectacular I'm not being ugly I promise Jalapeño and cheese sausage was dry, dry Service was great Nice people Clean atmosphere helpful Clean bathrooms Ambiance was really good inside and out Good place to hang out for a few drink, but I was working dang it! I loved the repurposed fire boxed made into trash cans! I would tell you to try this joint, but you also have to try the original Black's too. Then you make up your own mind. I think I'll stick to the original though...... I took my left overs home for my wife and she said it all tasted good to her so there's two reviews in here I guess read more
Had a corporate dinner here last week and it was amazing. Terry Blacks really rolled out the red carpet for our Company, Real Cold, and our guests. I decided to visit this location on my way back to Houston....mine as well since it's only a 30 min detour when leaving SA. They seem to have a smaller footprint than some other locations and the dining room is definitely smaller as well. This makes sense for being in a town of only 14,000. If it was my money, I would go to Black's Original instead of here if those were my only choices to make on a weekday. Good thing the bbq tastes pretty much the same between most all Terry Black's locations. The brisket they gave me was a lil heavy on the salt for sure but was moist and tender. The sausage was a tad different as well....tasted a bit more dry but a bit more hill country tasting than other locations. I've always liked their sausage though. My colleague was very disappointed with his $50 meal. His brisket was the very end of the flat, dry and overcooked. Part of his problem was he didn't ask for a particular cut upon ordering. His cornbread was also dry as a bone and began falling apart when he picked it up. His cobbler was decent. He indicated the pork ribs were cooked perfectly but he didn't like the glaze they had put on it. He said his favorite item was maybe the red onions. Needless to say, he tossed most of his food in the garbage well before I even finished eating. Probably won't be returning the next time I visit town based on his bad experience. read more

The place was awesome, could smell the meat as soon as I got out the truck. Roomy, had good outdoor space and a live band when I went. The brisket was so good, flavorful, and tender. The Mac was great and so was the creamed corn. The sausage was ok, not bad but would have preferred it a little more smoked and the potato salad was alright, but it's hard to make a good potato salad. The staff were smiley and welcoming. Overall, good experience and great brisket. read more
