I was halfway to Houston and was crazing BBQ. ATX BBq is kind of hard to compare but I have heard Smithville had some OG spots. I stopped in this tiny restaurant with just a few tables and friendly faces and was greeted warmly. I ordered a 1/2lb of brisket and ribs with some mac and jalapeño corn. It was all really well seasoned and you can tell made with love. The brisket was moist and had a great smoke ring. I will say it was over moist a little for me almost like a roast and the ribs didn't have quite enough bite for me but both were really excellent in flavor. I'll definitely be back to try more, the real ticket back was the sauce they call "sweet heat." Overall excellent spot and worth going out of your way for! read more

This place was amazing. As you walk in you are greeted by amazing people and you feel like your at home. As you look around you see clean tables, clean windows and give an old-fashioned barbecue feel. And the food is delicious Finger licking good, the brisket is nice and moist the potato salad and the mac & cheese are homemade and very flavorful and the barbecue sauce is very flavorful and really has a pop flavor. I thought this was a good sign which had me more excited to return the next day and early. Got there at 11:05 a.m. Friday. Few words describe my experience: Underwhelming Soulless Uninspiring Austin area has such a competitive landscape in the Austin area that you know what is mediocre, good, above average and killer. This was mediocre. The describe salt, pepper and love. I didn't taste any of that in the brisket although the bark was solid. I was quite excited about the honey habanero ribs. Biggest disappointment as the description had me salivating. There was no flavor and that's including the glaze. I didn't bother getting the sausage since it was not house made. The star for me was the three cheese Mac n Cheese. I would order this each an led every visit. Coleslaw meh. Walk in and there was a sign that said Free Beer! Awesome! They had me at Hello! We had brisket. Moist, lean, and burnt ends with og and sweet heat bbq sauce. I was in the Smithville area again, and I knew I had to have Bubby's BBQ again. This time they were in their new location which looked really nice! You can tell they take pride in their business. Upon entering, I was greeted warmly. I ordered half a pound of lean brisket and half a pound of jalapeño cheese sausage. The husband and I were going to share it although I did regret having to share because I wanted it all to myself, ha! Brisket was moist and would just fall apart. If was so good! And it paired well with the spicy barbecue sauce. The sausage was so good as well. The bread they use is really good too. The owners are so nice and would address me by name like I was an old friend even though this was only my second time here. I will definitely be back for more barbecue soon! read more

Come early if you want the best stuff! They sell out fast but they have the best banana pudding - and we order that everywhere we go, we looooved theirs! (Their grandmas recipe! ). The first time we came they were sold out of Texas twinkies (went for a late lunch). So when we happened to be driving past shortly after opening today we decided to pop in and grab some to go to try them out. They were SO good! We were treated like old friends on our first visit and they made sure we were enjoying everything. They have some family style picnic seating that we got to enjoy lunch with our family visiting from AZ which was nice! We grabbed a little of everything available meat wise and it was all great! Smithville needed a good Bar B Q restaurant after our communities long time classic closed its doors. We had others bar b Q places pop up here and there, but they just didn't make it. I was very excited but had reservations. When I walked in, I was greeted warmly. I looked at the menu to make my decision. That's when the owner gave me a sample, my decision's changed and grew. As you can see in the photo, I got half a chicken, jalapeño cheese sausage, and the chopped brisket sandwich. Price was 35? And some change. BUT I think you can see in the picture it wasn't skimpy. Worth every penny! Jalapeño and cheese sausage, absolutely delicious. Pepper and full of cheese. A nice kick from the jalapeños. Not greasy and perfectly juicy. Plenty of cheese too most places you can't find the cheese but here it's full of cheese. Brisket sandwich, absolutely delicious as well. I dipped the sandwich and the two barbecue sauces. the owner gave to me. The regular I believe was sweet vinegar and have great flavor. The second spicy, I believe vinegar spicy, and wonderful. The chicken not dry, wonderful smoked flavor and the spices were just right. I definitely will get it again. This is exactly what Smithville needed. read more

We visited our daughter and family in December and had the pleasure of going to Bubby's for lunch. She insisted we have lunch at Bubby's the day after we arrived because she said it would be the best BBQ we've ever had...AND BY GOLLY, SHE WAS CORRECT. I have never had BBQ this good, I tasted the pulled pork, brisket, sausages and burnt ends. Oh, my goodness, it was delicious!! Not just the meats but their macaroni and cheese was the best I have ever had. The banana pudding was to die for! We passed by the screened BBQ room and my son-in-law said "this is where the magic happens". I am home back in California missing Bubby's BBQ. Maybe because my daughter sends me pictures every week (not nice). The thing I also love about Bubby's is how they treat my daughter and her family. They are not greeted as customers; they are greeted like family and that just warms my heart. My granddaughters, Josie and Ellie gush when they talk about Bubby's and are excited to tell me, "We had Bubby's today". I've eaten at both locations. In each case, I had brisket that was very vinegary in taste. Not very good and very expensive. If you order the tray in the pics on these reviews, get ready to shell out over well over $50. I was able to go over $50 with just a sausage, 1/2 pound of brisket, a couple of sides and some drinks. Needless to say, I haven't been back. At those prices, I'll go to Lockhart or travel into Austin. Smithville has had a great history BBQ-wise, and I find myself going to a Bill Millers and literally saying it's better that the BBQ in Smithville. I don't get the BBQ joints in Smithville and Bastrop. What's the point of selling a long line as an indication of quality if it's actually not worth the wait or being so overpriced? read more
