We stopped here because they filmed Chainsaw Massacre here. The BBQ plate was okay but not worth the price we paid. It was nice seeing it but it's a tourist trap really not worth visiting since Hollywood told them to remove the vehicle that was parked outside and used in the film and to prohibited the sales of merchandise.
If you love Texas based horror movies, beer, and bbq then you need to put this on your list of places to visit! The inside of the shop is a fun store full of movie memorabilia and souvenirs to buy. And while it is loaded with stuff from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you can find goodies from other movies in the genre as well. Grab a cold beer from the fridge, order your bbq at the counter and make your way outside. There is a large covered outdoor seating area with plenty of places for photo ops to commemorate the stop. And cars, lots of outside cats just hanging around. They have several cabins on the ground as well, I need to look into renting for a longer excursion with friends. Private parking lot, easily accessible, friendly staff, good food, and clean bathrooms make it a great stop on any road trip.

I mean... at least, WE didn't end up in the menu, lol.
This barbecue joint is located 5 miles down SH304 assuming you're coming from Austin on Highway 71. Despite its name, there is no gas station here so don't plan on filling up except on bbq. Once inside, you'll be surrounded by Texas chainsaw massacre memorabilia, masks, action figures and merchandise. This place is rustic at best and if you plan on eating here, it's strictly covered outdoor picnic tables here. Basically you order at the counter inside and then you are directed to the back where they also have some small cabins to rent ($79 per night M-Th, $129 F-S). Paying by credit card will subject you to a tip screen starting at 15%. They also have cans of soda and plenty of domestic beer offerings, but nothing in the way of craft beer or wine. Brisket and sausage are the only two meats they serve here and the brisket does have a good solid smoke ring on it. We were surprised that a two meat plate with 2 sides was less than $15. The brisket was so moist and perfectly smoked that I got a pound to go. You can use one or two of their barbecue sauces which are also very good. The jalapeño sausage wasn't very spicy and their sides are pretty average, but all in all, glad we made the pilgrimage.

They also sell clothes, Halloween masks, and many other cool items. The staff are friendly. This is where you would order your bbq and get your order where you can walk around to the backside where there are a few picnic tables to hangout at. The parking lot is really small so hopefully it isn't too busy.

Everyone was standing in line for their famous BBQ! The brisket plate was absolutely amazing. It came with two sides, which I picked the potato salad and beans. The brisket was so tender and moist! Perfectly seasoned and perfectly smoked! Probably the best brisket I've had in a long time! We didn't dine out back because it was so HOT, but there are a bunch of tables to sit at in a covered area behind the store. There are also cabins that you can rent, if you are brave enough to spend the night. Overall, we had a pleasant experience! Our tummies were totally satisfied. We will definitely be back if we are ever on that side of town!

Gas Station off the beaten path, however well worth the drive. Yes, once a movie scene, there are a number of curious folks who were stopping in. You walk into a gas station which has been converted to a sort of shop. The shop sells a lot of horror memorabilia from various movies, a lot of interesting items. The sales woman want to say her name was Patty. Anyway Patty was very friendly & took the time to explain their food items. Patty literally described all the food to us, which helped us decide what to order. Remind you we had just had our dinner of burgers & fries. The brisket here, I cannot stress how juicy, tasty & tender. The spicy sausage was amazing, different kind of spice never the less very good. The potato salad, smooth, & not overly spiced, left you wanting more. The beans were pretty smooth & tasty. No regrets here, definitely try to return back. Hard to find establishments with good food. Gas Station delivers on great brisket, sausage, potato salad & beans. Don't miss out!
To preface I have never saw the movie associated with this location... While driving to Houston from Austin my friend swore we had to stop here... ...with low expectations I walked in. And did not even realize it was a restaurant. It's loaded with posters, toys, and everything horror you could imagine... After walking around a bit I saw the menu. Ordered a brisket sandwich and a side of sausages... Ultra friendly service from the owners and the place is spotless! The sandwich was fantastic. Though it needed sauce, this sandwich set the bar for a lot of other places that ultimately fell short. This is a must stop for anyone remotely in the area! Please support these small places so they'll be around forever!
Came on a Sunday afternoon with some friends after going to the state park. This was recommended by someone since it was the location that Texas chainsaw massacre was filmed lol) when you go inside to order it feels like you're in a Halloween store if you're into that. You would never think this place sells decent barbecue. Honestly not half bad. They had just finished roasting chicken when we got there and the breast I was given was massive!!! I couldn't finish all of it lol. I also had the brisket which was super yummy! They have two bbq sauces- a regular and a ghost pepper one. I only tried the regular but my friends like the ghost pepper one. The sides were ok... I would opt for potato salad. Chili was meh. Overall not a bad experience. Food came out quick and the outdoor patio out back is nice enough, a lot of flies though. read more

What an interesting place! I found myself in Bastrop yesterday wanting some BBQ, and this place came up in my search. Glad I stopped in! When you walk thru the door you are greeted by life sized models of Jason Voorhies, Freddie Krueger & Scream. You've stepped into an extensive horror movie memorabilia shop that also sells tasty BBQ & rents cabins. On top of all that, It's one of the major filming locations for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Whoa! The dude at the counter takes you order, and directs you out to the covered eating area to wait for your food. After less that a five min wait, I was on my way. The brisket had a nice smoke ring & flavor, but I knocked off a star because it didn't have the crust on it that I like. If you want a creepy BBQ experience with lots of photo ops, this is the place! read more

Perfect for a chainsaw massacre movie night if you're staying in the onsite cabins. They have a ton of movies to rent, not just TCM. The cabins got pretty cold at night (we went in the Fall), but had space heaters that did a good job in keeping us comfy. The BBQ was really good, and they had a lot of cool merch and collectibles in the store. read more

Went to this joint for the first time to go to the "Jeeper's Creepers" signing. I have to say that I have never seen a group of people that seemed to bend over backwards to make sure that everyone in the VERY HOT line outside was as okay and staying shaded and hydrated. When you finally did get to see "The Creeper" the staff did not rush you out the door, and let you spend your well-earned time in the little air-conditioned store to get your memorabilia signed and pictures taken. The really did seem to want EVERYONE get to as much as they could out of the experience, even if it meant that everyone had to wait just a little longer. Even though it was very hot outside and the lines were very long no one seemed to be in a bad mood and the environment was very harmonious. That says a lot for the staff that worked there. Gotta say. Very nice job ! PS. Shout out the "The Creeper". It was very nice talking to you. You were very kind and amiable. Thank you ! read more

Interesting little place with lots of memorabilia and a bbq restaurant. Parking in the front, outdoor picnic tables in the back. Little shop to buy goodies and browse horror film items. Great food and decent prices. No complaints about the food. Brisket and sausage was delicious with little wait. A definite must try! read more
What a cool and unusual place to stumble upon. I initially was just trying to get a late BBQ lunch on my way home from New Orleans, and this spot was well reviewed and on a stretch of road I wanted to explore. I had no idea I was going to be walking into a piece of cinematic history and Texas lore. Wow! The BBQ was fantastic and the portions were very generous. Our hosts were good natured and didn't try to make chili out of us! The cold beer was the perfect accoutrement. The place also is set up to host overnight events. If you are interested in quirky & legendary cinematic (horror) history, and you happen to find yourself on a lonely stretch of highway in central Texas: This is a spot you can't afford to miss. read more
The gas station from the 1974 film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Restored and slaughtering BBQ just like in the movie. Roy the owner has built several small cabins and has a fire pit and shows horror films drive in style on the weekends. Inside the station are a lot of horror film novelties. We stopped by driving back to Houston from Austin as I had heard about and the girls are always up for a new road side attraction on our road trips. The night we stopped in the actress from the Exorcist was hanging out signing books and posters. Oh yeah, the brisket and sausage were good. A little creepy that in the film it was made with victims. Couldn't really get that out of my head. Great roadside attraction. We plan to stop in stay at the cabins some time. read more

I didn't eat here so can't really comment on the BBQ or renting one of the cabins. It was a cool little stop for horror movie fans - got talked into stopping and the people in the store make it interesting. Great selection of horror movie items for sale - Tshirt, gifts, nick nacks. Worth the 10 minute stop if in Bastrop. read more

I've been riding my Harley from Houston to Bastrop to visit The Gas Station every few months for a few years now. If you don't know what it is, it is a filming location from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie that has been converted into a horror themed gift shop and barbecue joint. The movie memorabilia is pretty cool and they have awesome t-shirts. Also the staff are always friendly. The real draw for me, however, is the barbecue. The greatest complement I can give them is the fact that I frequently am willing to ride 130 miles for their awesome sliced beef sandwich. Their sides are great as well but the sandwich is so big I can really eat them. The Gas Station is an amazing place to visit for fans of horror movies and barbecue alike. I definitely recommend this place. Check off my pics! read more
Worth a stop. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but stopped in for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre history and the really cool horror/collectibles shop. The clerk who was working was awesome and we enjoyed our shopping experience and chatting with him about horror flicks. read more

This was stop #2 on my TCSM road trip and it didn't disappoint. It looks exactly like it does in the movie, which made it creepy and awesome. There's a store loaded with horror stuff: DVDs, masks, bobble heads, t-shirts, etc. They've got an old van and old truck on site, which add to the ambiance. I'm a vegetarian and don't eat people lol so I didn't check out the restaurant. I was only there for about 30 minutes and several people stopped, so I wasn't the only movie buff making the stop. I recommend visiting if you're a TCSM fan. read more

Stayed here 2 nights in a cabin and it was an incredible experience. For a horror fan, it was taking a pilgrimage for sure. The staff is incredible and welcoming, as a b&b setup you couldn't ask for anything more, the room was super comfy and cold on a 100°+ Texas day. They even give you horror dvds to borrow and watch you your stay. There is something about watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on one of the primary filming locations that just be properly put into words. The BBQ was incredible as well, w specials for each day, very unique and cool. The horror shop was top notch, there was so much horror merchandise and incredible finds. The rooms were clean and the restrooms (which I had reservations about) were absolutely spotless and in perfect shape. It was like having a Bucees*s restroom at your disposal. Such an incredible experience, I cant recommend it enough. read more
