Checking out the grub

I love supporting local businesses and we stopped by Paw paws for lunch. The staff was friendly and our food got out quickly. We tried their fried deviled eggs and onion rings. The onion rings were huge and tasty. The deviled eggs were okay. I could tell that the yolk had some hot sauce added. But that was about the only thing that made them deviled. When we got our fish, it was nice and hot and pretty tasty. My kid got the chicken tenders, it was so much food my kid ate on it 2 days before finishing them but loved the taste. I do wish they had more side options without meat as I am on a pescatarian diet. They're serving sizes, and prices were very reasonable. We would definitely come back again when we are in town

Paw Paws rules the culinary roost in Bastrop. As with every restaurant we visited in Texas, service was very friendly. We got two Paw Paw platters for people and an order of fried pickles. Every bit of the food was amazing! The batter was crisp and flavorful but also thin and not overpowering 10/10. I do love hush puppies and theirs were perfect. Shrimp were very large and fresh. House cocktail sauce and tarter were great compliments to the food. Fries, coleslaw and beans were also really good. Definitely the best meal we had in Bastrop.

My first impression was the sidewalk windows that were full of a lot of old fishing junk. As we walked in the interior reminded me of a small town cafe--lots of fishing rods, wooded fish, and what I assume were blown up pictures of the original owners. At 6:45 P.M. a lot of the sitting was occupied but there were plenty of booths and tables available. It was extremely loud but got quieter the closer we got to 8:00. Our server, Alli, came over immediately and took our drink order. The beer was nice a cold. She also recommended the fried onion rings for an appetizer that were delicious and some of the best I have had. We had the catfish platter: The hushpuppies were great and defiantly homemade. The coleslaw was very good. The pinto beans were too bland so I added a good portion of Tabasco and pepper. Eating them with the hush puppies made them better. Now, the catfish was too dry and tasteless (the tartar sauce helped). Needless to say, we have had much better even though most reviewers seem to love eating at Paw-Paws. Alli

I happened upon Paw-Paw's while searching things to do in Bastrop and I'm so glad that I did. Everything on my plate was delicious; from the fried catfish and shrimp, to the sides. It's times like these that I wish I had the ability to clear a plate because I definitely wanted to. The catfish and shrimp were fried perfectly and are what I'd consider to be large portions. The shrimp were HUGE, so don't be taken aback when you see that they offer 2-3 per plate. The catfish was battered in cornmeal and the shrimp had a flaky fried texture. The sides- sooooo good. I really enjoyed the beans, coleslaw (had a slight kick to it) and hushpuppies. They offer a limited bottled beer and seltzer selection. I believe seating is first come first serve. I'll be dreaming of that afternoons lunch until return again!

They were very busy, even at 3 pm on a Sunday. You can choose your spiciness level. Regular, medium, spicy and "xxx." We tried a medium and a spicy. I am not even curious about the xxx because the spicy (and even the medium) were plenty hot for us! The place has a nice interior. It's the former (and beloved) Cedar's restaurant. And they had some nice music playing. And it's counter service only but they all seemed very nice. We ordered 2 blue crabs, a pound of snow crabs, 6 red potatoes, corn on the cob and mushrooms. That was plenty for the two of us. Blue crabs are far cheaper, and these were fine, but those snow crab legs were sooo goood! They steam or boil the crab, place it in a plastic bag, add any veggies you ordered, then ladel in whatever sauce you ordered and toss to coat. So... yeah... everything's real messy! They don't give you a mallet, but you don't need one. The blue crab is already in two halves with the main shell removed. And they don't provide a bib (though we didn't spill anything on our clothes). And they didn't even offer wet wipes, just a large dispenser of napkins. But it worked for us. You just wash up after in the restroom. Of course crab needs beer and they had a good IPA among other things. We will return to work through the menu. We haven't had dungeness crab in awhile. And who doesn't like muscles? My only issue here is, I have no idea how many calories I'm eating. They lay down the butcher paper and you dump out your bag of seafood and it's all in a pool of butter, but it's tossed while it's in the shell so I don't know how much of the gets to the meat. But it must be a lot, because the meat has so much flavor! So, I'm planning a light breakfast, a return to Dockside for lunch, and a healthy salad for dinner. Sounds good to me!

What was meant to be a quick lunch stop in Bastrop turned into an ordeal my kids had to witness. When the surprise charge appeared, I asked our waitress where the policy was disclosed. She didn't know. Neither did her colleagues. When I asked to see it posted, a staff member threatened to call the police on us for asking. We finally reached the owner by phone, who pointed to fine print on the menu cover that his own staff didn't know existed. If you're dining here with a group, ask about the auto-gratuity before you order -- and decide whether you want to give your business to a place that threatens to call the cops on customers for a reasonable question.

ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING -- BEST MEXICAN FOOD ANYWHERE…read more If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I've traveled all over Texas and across the U.S., and I can say without hesitation that Las Cocinas Mexican Grill is hands-down the BEST Mexican restaurant I have ever been to -- and that includes all of Austin. My family and I come here several times a week, even though we don't live close by. That alone should tell you how incredible this place is. Must-try favorites (do NOT skip these): The Margaritas - Very strong and absolutely perfect. Order them half & half (half on the rocks, half frozen). Trust me -- you'll thank me later. Nachos Al Carbon (Appetizer) - The beef fajita meat is out of this world. Tender, flavorful, and unforgettable. Beef Fajitas Cremosas (Entrée) - Get them with EXTRA sun-dried tomatoes. Oh. My. God. I have never had anything like this in my life, and it's something I crave several times a week. Stuffed Jalapeños - So good I sometimes order them as my entire meal. And the onion rings they're served on? Easily the best onion rings I've ever had anywhere. Beyond the food, the staff is absolutely amazing. From the moment you walk in, they make you feel like family -- warm, welcoming, and genuinely happy you're there. That kind of service is rare, and it's one of the many reasons this place is so special to us. And yes -- I always forget to take pictures of my food because I eat it before I remember to take photos for a review . That should tell you everything you need to know about how good it is. We are incredibly thankful for Las Cocinas. It's not just our favorite Mexican restaurant -- it's our favorite restaurant, period, and the best in the entire area by a mile. Perfect in every way.
