What happened to the days where you could buy just one pen, one pencil, one refill of scotch tape? Why is everything sold in packs of multiples? Not everyone needs multiple packs of pens, scotch tape, envelopes, and other items. Also where are the employees when you have a question, there were very few people in the store, and not very many employees to be found. The Sales Associate at the register was busy talking to someone in her headset than to help greet me hello, she just asked me if I found what I was looking for (like there was any free employee to help me if I didn't). Service center have the worst service! Came here just to have some documents faxed. There's one lady that works here and if she's busy no one else will help even if they're just standing around. There was a lady who got really pissed off and went to get someone to help, but they basically ignored her. She went over again and pulled someone over and they helped her then left right after, leaving everyone else waiting in line. Basically, everything is over priced and the service center sucks. God forbid you need to fax something or print a few business cards. Gues there are online places that can do that for you so don't bother. read more

The customer service is awful. I question the management in the decisions of hire or is it that management is so bad the employees just don't care. I went into the store this week and was looking for refills. I had to walk back to the front to ask for help. I watched while the person who was going to help walked slow to do something and about 5-10 minutes later slowly walked to help me. Way, way over-priced on 98% of their items and their customer service isn't even that good. Some examples. I bought filing cabinets here for pickup last year. They let me use their dolly but I did most of the lifting etc alone. Bought a printer here once, if it breaks it would be cheaper to buy a new one than two ink cartridges. Bought a laptop for my daughter, tried to sell me every add on possible. Made color copies of a 50 or so page doc once. Over $20. Cheapest post-its I saw were around $6-7 for a tiny pack. I'd never come here if I were a teacher. You can see that I've purchased a few big ticket items. Ibdon't know why they have a "rewards" card other than to keep track of purchasing trends because to date, in over 5 years, I've only saved $5.21 on that rewards card. I have been here a number of times and each time they have everything I need. The staff is usually very friendly and helpful. They don't bother you but will always check up on you to see if you need assistance. I purchased some office furniture there and it was actually very straight forward. The desk and chair setup were easy unlike certain IKEA or Scandinavian Designs furniture. It's a good spot for any Alameda residents and conveniently located. read more

Wow, what a surprise when I tried to follow up on their Max Assurance plan that I paid extra for... ...as it turns out, when trying to file a claim under their extended warranty is like pulling teeth. After a 20 minute phone maze, you must ship the defective product to them, THEN you must wait 10 to 15 BUSINESS DAYS before they send you a gift card to their store to buy more of their crap! Sometimes big chain stores just down the street can be disappointing. You walk in with the weekly ad, items circled, questions ready and something goes awry. I've been shopping at this Office Max since it opened many moons ago. I had hoped for a fish'n chips restaurant but oh well. I like this store, I really do. I know where things are, the staff is helpful, right there to lend a hand. There's a good selection of the daily supplies needed but also plenty of furniture and technology choices as well. They handle customers, questions and returns with ease. My family has purchased items from their elementary school supplies list up to desks to take to college. I get everything for my business there. I like that there are extended warranties available on most larger-ticket items. The print counter is great! The Max Perks program is rewarding. It's a good, clean, bright, cheery, inviting store filled with great merchandise and friendly knowledgeable folks. read more

Bought a Targus laptop charger here for an emergency. Charger didn't work the way it was supposed to, so I tried to return it today. I had 30 days to return it, and it had been already 33 days, as I was traveling a lot. They wanted to charge a 10% re-stocking fee, and store credit only, no cash. I don't mind the store credit, but the 10% re-stocking fee is BS, since I had already opened the product. Well, if I hadn't opened it, then I wouldn't know that it wasn't working, would I? Stores like Office Max really should think about the cost-benefit of having a strict return policy versus customer loyalty. Sure, I will go ahead and eat that 10% re-stocking fee (so they're keeping a one-time $8 profit), but I would never risk buying anything from here again (so they're losing potentially $1,000's of lifetime customer profit from me). On Jan 29th, I ordered same day business cards, 250, no extra formatting or specialized paper. I never received a notice the same day. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I assumed they were busy and didn't get to it. Never heard from them the next day, so I stopped in on my way home around 7:30pm. They couldn't find my order. They checked the system and it showed that I ordered it for that store. A further investigation showed the job was sent to their printing warehouse instead. So I asked what happened to the "same day" policy. The store clerk said they don't do that anymore. Either the clerk is full of crap or Office Depot/Max is false advertising. Wife distractedly left her iPhone on top of her car & drove off. Found it 6 hrs later face down in the road, 3 blocks away, with smashed screen. Brought it to the local Office Max on Otis Drive here in Alameda as she heard they did screen repairs & the nicest young man at the Tech Support center in the store, Charles Windham, was able to peel the protective glass screen off to find the screen beneath intact! He replaced the screen with the new one she bought - she reported that he was so patient, professional and made her feel really welcome! He's now gonna be our new go-to tech guy! read more

Heres the scene; I just want to buy a portfolio cover and a pen. It takes me about 10 min, to wonder up and down the isles till I find the one portfolio cover in the whole store. I take it to the counter and the cashier says "This has no UPC was there another one" I say "It was all by itself, maybe there are more somewhere else, it didn't look like it belonged where I picked it up." Cashier "Then I can't sell it to you." Me "Can't someone look up the UPC?" Cashier big sigh, then mumbles something into her radio, and starts ringing the next person while I am still standing in front of her, so they had to walk around me to use the credit card machine. 5 minutes go by Me "Any luck on that UPC" Cashier again calls on the radio and a man takes the portfolio and disappears. 10 minutes go by Me "Did he find the code?" Cashier "Um no, so just the pens then?" Me "No, I want to buy my items, is there a manager who I can speak with?" Cashier into the radio again 10 minutes go by Me "Do you have a corporate customer service number I can have?" Cashier waddles out from behind the register to where the manager is standing 10' away and gives her the portfolio." Another 10 minutes go by and the cashier comes back with a binder- totally unrelated to my item and says "I guess we will let you buy it with this sku." No 'sorry for the wait', the manager never came over after I had asked to speak with her, not even a thank you as I payed. Office Max, you owe me 45 minutes of my life back and you can expect a visit from weights and measures. You suck! read more

I usually don't write a bad review like this because every situation is different but this time I felt it was necessary. I have worked in customer service all my life and I would have NEVER spoken to a customer like I was spoken to. I had ordered a project to be completed by the printing department. There was a miscommunication between myself and the employee and the project was done incorrectly. If the employee (which happens to be the manager, Mark) had confirmed with me (as I indicated in my email) how the project would be printed, the project may have been printed correctly. After a very nice and helpful employee named Leroy said that he would take care of it and reprint it I went back to work. The manager, Mark, called me a hour later. He continued to yell at me in the most condescending way. My coworker was sitting across the desk from me and could hear him yelling over the phone. I remained as calm as I could. I was absolutely mortified that someone in his position in a service related industry would speak to a customer like this. It almost sounded like Mark took this personally and felt the need to attack me verbally. It worries me even more that when I called back to speak to another manager and was told "I've been working with Mark for a long time now and have never seen him yell at anyone." Whether or not you believe the customer you should always at least apologize and try to diffuse the situation. UNBELIEVABLE AND COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL! In the positions I have held in the service industry if I had ever spoken to a customer like that I would have been fired on the spot. read more

They always looked over worked and you may sometimes feel like a complete asshole because you're just one more person making their work load harder....and it's just them. Manager Lee was extremely courteous got me started on the two projects I had for store: 1) salvage data from hard drive on a dead PC, and 2) purchase of a new PC. He introduced me to A. J. who was outstanding. He was especially helpful with new PC shopping. He answered all of my questions very clearly and with patience. As I'm browsing the options, I'm assisted by a friendly associate who not only offered me a 1TB HP brand drive regularly-priced at $109.99 for the sale price of another brand that was out of stock - $79.99 - but also took another 20% off at the register! Another one star for this place. The on duty manager, Saul, provided some of the worst customer service I've had in a long time. He snapped at me when he screwed up my return and was unable to rectify his mistake. I'm a regular at the copy/print department (it's practically my second office) and I have to say the entire Impress team (Racquel, Richard, Lisa, Lorena, and Leroy) does a fantastic job. Always friendly and helpful, especially Leroy, who actually offers suggestions on your projects to cut down on time or save you $$$! Service can be backed up during peak hours because of the store's heavily trafficked location so if you come during that time, you just have to be patient. My only gripe is they are running on one crappy old dell. You'd think with the computer being the heart of their operations, management would invest in a newer faster PC or two to better serve their employees and customers. As for the rest of the store, I have limited experiences but they were all pleasant. On one occasion, I was looking at USB drives and they were all more expensive than the one I eyeballed on their site, but a manager walked by, sensing I was in distress and asked if I needed anything. I told him about the price I saw online and he offered to match it no problems. read more

I thought I should share an alarming incident with Office Max at Shoreline. I went there today to recycle my printer toner and buy a new one. During the transaction I accidently gave them the Drum for the toner/printer. I realized what happened after I left and went back to retrieve the Drum. They said it was gone and they don't have the drum or old toner. I asked to speak to the manager they said he was not there so I had them get him on the phone. The manager proceeded to tell me that it was my fault for giving it to them and I was welcome to spend another almost $200 for a new Drum. I was appalled that a printer toner and Drum just walked away and nobody knew what happened and then was told I was at fault. I am filing a report with their corporate office but know I am out almost $200 and feel this is unfair. These things just don't up and walk away and the service from the barely 20 year olds was horrible to begin with. I encourage everyone to shop elsewhere and not support this type of behavior from a large chain that thinks it is okay to steal and not take responsibility for their mistakes. read more

They get points for parking, but lose points for their staff. Here's a great example of a moment in your life where you need to figure out your priorities. On one hand you have a large clean store, with plenty of parking, but on the other hand you have an entire staff who knows NOTHING about their products, and will literally RUN from you if you ask for help. Which is more important to you? Because of kids, co-workers, and our many outdoor excursions, I drive big SUVs. I also won't go to a store unless I know exactly what I want, and where to find it. As you can see, the parking is important to me, and store assistance is not. But that's something you will need to decide for yourself. Example 1: I was shopping for a certain type of folder that matched all the other folders in my file cabinet. I went to the store with my friend, already knowing exactly what I want, and where it was at, thanks to the online store. I also knew that it was in stock, thanks again to the online presence. I get it, I understand that inventories can be off, but when you're talking about file folders, it's not exactly what you'd call a "illusive, highly sought after" product, they should have more than one in stock. After searching the folder section for a few minutes, and coming up empty handed an employee came into the row to put some products away. I showed him a picture of the folders and said "Can't seem to find these, are they somewhere else?" to which he replied "oh, we don't carry those". For starters, I was showing him a picture from their website that stated "in-stock, free in store pickup". Secondly, just about 5 seconds after he said that they don't carry them, my friend shouts "Hey here they are, they were hidden behind a miss placed stack of folders." Lazy employees always default to "we're out of stock" and "we don't carry that". Every time I hear this at ANY store, I ignore them and search more myself, and guess what...about 85+% of the time, I find it! Who knew that not being a lazy waste of space could pay off?!?! Example 2: I was in the Alameda store buying colored sharpies (I love to doodle). I noticed that they were out of the extra-fine tip blue. I saw an employee so I said "excuse me sir...." and that's about as much as I could get out before he looked at me, looked ahead, and sped up to an almost jogging pace. Yup...that just happened. I started laughing, then first checked to see if I had accidentally wore a bomb on my chest, then went to the cashier and asked her if she could check to see if they have any more in stock. I mentioned him running away from me when she replied with a not surprising "he does that all the time, he's lazy". Seems like someone who needs a good old fashion firing. If you read the other comments, you'll find that there are a lot of people saying similar things about the helpful staff (or lack there of), and the abundance of parking. My advice for you: If you know what you want, and where to find it, this is a great store. If you need ANY assistance of ANY kind, head to the FedEx store on webster, or another location that has better staff reviews. Parking: 5/5 - plenty of parking in front, and they're not all compact spots Atmosphere:4/5 - clean, but occasionally products are in weird places Service: 1/5 - Absolutely horrible, this is DEFINITELY a self serve place Product/Pricing: 3/5 - Eh...it's an office supply store, you can get it for 1/2 price online, but if you need it now, it's not bad.
