When I consulted for Cayson Designs I brought them in to fix some technical issues left behind by a technical consultant. Since I joined Parties That Cook full-time almost 4 years ago we did a complete re-design of the website and newsletters, print collateral, and various digital assets including vehicle design. The PxI team is creative, thoughtful, open to way too many client iterations, and very reasonably priced. We can be honest with each other, and have pushed each other on design and other decisions as a team, and they have always gone to great lengths to ensure customer satisfied with the end result. I will never refer any of the companies we do business with to him because of this fact. I usually never yelp bad businesses but I felt I had no choice on this one. He quoted us a website design that was 7x more expensive than the developers we chose to go with. And we love our new website. Be careful with this team. We're glad that we finally pulled the plug on the relationship we had with them.

I brought in my DualSense controllers to fix analog stick issues and paid $100 to repair three knobs. Just one week later, I had the exact same issue with one of the supposedly repaired sticks. When I brought it back, I was charged an additional $60 to fix what should have already been resolved. What's most frustrating is that I couldn't get a clear explanation as to why I was being charged again for the same issue. If a repair doesn't hold up after a week, that should fall under some kind of workmanship guarantee--not an additional charge. I want to continue supporting this business because I've had good experiences in the past, but this situation felt unfair and left me questioning the quality and accountability of the repairs.

Using Yelp Projects, I filled out the repair request, and the bids came pouring in! YY Computer offered to do diagnostics and software install for $100. YY Computer is in Oakland Chinatown on Jackson St. I made an appt, and dropped by in the morning. While I was there, they did a quick check and found the hard drive (HD) to be damaged. They repaired my PC and upgraded my HD to 1 TB. It took about 2 business days. When I went to pickup my PC, they switched it on and show me the new HD. I'm very pleased with my experience. Small parking lot or meters on the street.

If you, like me, rely on your laptop to survive and usually exude a calm, professional demeanor at work or in your home office, you may have also have experienced -- hopefully rarely -- the panic, anxiety and doomsday thinking of someone who suddenly realizes their laptop is dead or dying. That's precisely where I was emotionally earlier this week when I walked into ABM Computers' new offices on Nob Hill in Alameda. I felt more dread than Eeyore, the doomsday donkey, and Chicken Little, the chicken, combined. I was certain my laptop was dead, all my data was fried, my career was over, and an asteroid would certainly crash into my car on the way home. Fortunately, my laptop, data and career survived -- thanks to their brilliant technicians -- and the only astronomical distraction that scared me on my way home was the price I had to pay at the pump for a gallon of gas. I was so impressed by ABM -- and for much more than their IT skills -- I decided to do something today that I have never done before: post a Yelp review. In addition to their computer repair expertise, they have the social skills a computer repair shop needs to calm down panic-stricken customers (I know this as fact because I was one of those customers). Affordability is also an attribute. I was certain they would ask me to pay a rush fee after I asked for a one day turnaround but the topic never came up and I still received my laptop, now with a faster drive, the next day, and for a fee that surprised me (I fully expected to pay twice as much as they actually charged me). Have I said enough about ABM? No, I have one final thought. Because my laptop would have to remain with them overnight, they offered me a "loaner laptop" -- for free -- that would allow me to continue working that evening to meet a surly client's pressing deadline (a problem I shared with ABM staff when I blasted through their doors in my initial panic). The laptop they lent me saved me and so did the considerate and brilliant friends at ABM Computers in Alameda. There....now I've said enough. :) read more

My computer became infected with rootkit malware at the end of May. All my computer savvy friends, and all the computer professionals I called said I would have to rebuild my operating system. Norton worked on it for 6 days, requiring me to be available to give them access to my computer. They could not fix it. They also said I would have to rebuild my operating system. I had an external Maxtor hard drive, but even so, everyone said it would not be the same once it was rebuilt. I called Alameda Business Machines, and Michael Wood assured me he could fix it without having to wipe it all out and rebuild it. He was sure he could remove the malware. He picked up my computer and had it completely fixed the next day. He removed the malware and anything else he found, changed my Norton Anti-Virus to AVG, installed a malware scanner and updated my internet explorer. The computer has worked fine ever since. No more freezing pages, no more having to turn the computer off and restart it every five minutes due to the pages freezing. He did a great job, was true to his word, and saved me the nightmare of completely rebuilding the operating system. I recommend this company for problems like this. I am very satisfied because they saved my computer, did it quickly, and at a reasonable cost. read more

My laptop needed fixing and I found this place just driving around. So, I decided to take my laptop in and have it fixed in which they did. After about a week, the same problem occurred so I took it back to them. They fixed it again. Took it home, had it for about a day and the unfortunate happened again. This was getting frustrating so I took it back to them yet again and they themselves were curious about what was happening. When I was told it was fixed and ready, I went to pick it up but before I left the store, I checked it myself and notice that it was still the same. At first, I thought it was something I was doing wrong and I asked one of the guys if I was. He took the time to check it, troubleshoot, etc. He too was curious what was going on. I'm guessing he wasn't the original person that had worked on it before. He then ran a test and told me that the problem was far from what they were fixing. So, to end the story, they were kind enough to refund me my money back. That was a very nice gesture on their part as a business. After all that I went thru with this transaction, I would still bring them my business on future computer problems. read more

I love these guys (and gals)! I have been taking my computers to them for several years now and they have always done a fine job of fixing them at a reasonable price. My son had a high end laptop (I hate trying to repair laptops) which he had managed to damage in several ways and Michael took the job on and the repairs ended up being way more extensive than either of us had anticipated. One of the main problems was a faulty HP part. Michael researched the issue and determined it appeared to be a known factory defect, contacted HP on my behalf and got my son a brand new equivalent laptop and transferred all his files and documents over to it. He had spent two or three times as many hours on this job as he had anticipated but refused to raise the cost of the repair from his original estimate even though I offered to pay more. Of course my laptop went down in the middle of a project I was working on. In a frantic stance I found the closest place around my family where I could take my laptop to get fixed ASAP. Micheal is ah honest man. I went into the shop because my monitor died. He asked me to describe the symptoms of the dying - and I said it had been happening for a couple of years - every time the computer downloads any update the image jumps and turns into pixels. I left my MacBook pro…read morewith them mid-December, got it back the first time in Jan 21, had to take it back twice due to their issue and finally got it back Feb 13. I've paid almost $1k to replace the logic board, keyboard & mouse pad. The quote for the logicboard was $200 over what Apple quoted me ($680). They replaced my keyboard with a super janky 3rd party keyboard that bowed near the screen, sounded horrible and the space bar only worked if it was touched directly in the middle of it. I took it back & they replaced the entire keyboard/mousepad again but with an Apple product. Only this time the touch id key wouldnt work. So I had to take it back AGAIN and the tech cannibalized my original keyboard for its touch ID key. And they tried to charge me for that change but the tech told them that was a mistake. I had to wait while they called the tech to get that straightened out. Now I wonder if that's why I paid so much. I really wanted to support a local business, they came highly recommended by a friend but I didnt have a good experience. Maybe they are better for PCs. And now the bottom half of my laptop has rough edges from the tools the tech used. The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth and set me back months for my work.

Apple told me the logic board was bad and quoted me around $500 for a repair. I thought I was going to have to buy a whole new phone. They took the time to diagnose the problem, explained everything clearly, and repaired my phone for much less than Apple's quote. The communication was honest, professional, and straightforward the whole time. They even applied the diagnostic fee toward the repair, which I really appreciated. My phone is working perfectly again, and they saved me hundreds of dollars. However, because I work in the technology field, I felt it was important to share my experience after taking the time to look further into the situation and to help others going through a similar situation. Initially, I did not jump to conclusions. Instead, I sought additional opinions from other professional recovery companies to better understand available options. That's most important. Before posting this review, I reached out directly to Emergency Guy to give them an opportunity to address my concerns and provide clarification. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response. I came to Emergency Guy seeking guidance after experiencing issues with my HDD and SSD. Overall, the staff and technicians were respectful. However, I did have one interaction with an individual staff member who appeared overwhelmed and frustrated - possibly the owner, Phillip? While that affected the tone of that particular interaction, I understand that these situations can happen. It did not deter me from my overall experience, as I continued working with other staff members who were professional and helped improve the overall tone of the communication. I paidfor an evaluation and assessment, including shipping costs. During a follow-up phone conversation, I was asked over the phone whether I would consider increasing my budget to approximately $2,000 so the HDD could be sent to another company. While I was open to discussing available options, I ultimately decided not to proceed. Approximately four weeks later or longer, I was informed that the HDD platters were damaged and that there was essentially no realistic chance of recovering my data, even through another recovery provider. I was also asked whether I wanted the drive recycled, which I understood as disposing of the device, and I chose not to proceed with that option. I sought additional professional opinions. After receiving a second and third evaluation from other data recovery companies, I was advised that the condition of the HDD did not appear to match the assessment I had originally received. This experience raised concerns about the accuracy of the initial evaluation. Since I paid it, I expected a clear and accurate diagnosis of the drive's condition, along with realistic information regarding possible recovery options. My concern is not that recovery was uncertain -- I understand that data recovery can be complex and that outcomes are never guaranteed. My concern is that I was told it was beyond recovery, yet further evaluations resulted in my data being successfully recovered. My advice to anyone going through a similar situation is to seek multiple professional opinions. I chose Emergency Guy because I believe in supporting local businesses, and I appreciate the services they provide. However, when dealing with important data recovery decisions, it is always wise to consult other qualified professionals. If something does not feel right, take the time to ask questions, gather information, and get additional opinions before making a final decision. If someone becomes dismissive with questions - that's a sign to move on immediately.

I had completely disassembled my $400 HP printer, put it back together and something went wrong and the screen wouldn't light up. They're not only found the tiny wire inside a very, very small cable that I have broken, they showed me a picture of it and gave me a complete tutorial. then they went on to explain why my printer wasn't working anymore. It had smeared printing because over five years, I've been using aftermarket toner on an HP printer. I then asked for a recommendation on a high volume printer for home use. That's in between category between home desktop and large office printers. They said they didn't know but they researched it and called me back a couple of days later with really excellent advice I took and purchased the printer they recommended! Then one day I was nearby installed a large projection system and didn't have a long enough power cable. I went in and explained and they gave me a 10 foot power cable for free. But most important these people are are very friendly as well as mean technical experts... But very humble about it and they really listen care about the customers. Wow!
