my MAC laptop screen had started showing letters others than those I typed. After looking at it, the helper said I needed a new keyboard. But I use one outer keyboard besides the one incorporated, and both had same problem. The young man responded impatiently that he was very busy and left the desk. I left, since I was not going to get any help. The next day, my usual computer helper (unavailable the day before) immediately diagnosed the problem. The default keyboard accepted by my MAC had been changed (for unknown reasons) to a French keyboard. Just click on right button in menu bar to reinstate the US keyboard. Cannot recommend Apple & Mac solutions enough! I brought my 2017 Macbook Pro in because the screen wasn't working, turns out my logic board was fried! I was worried because I had some really precious data and photos on that computer and was freaking out about not being able to recover it. Manu walked me through the process and was so helpful in explaining the problem. Manu did me a major solid and found an old unused hard drive, which helped bring the price down for the service. When I went to pick up the hard drive and my old laptop, Manu sat with me and went through all the folders to make sure it had everything I needed. All my data was recovered! This is a great place to brainstorm and figure out the good, the bad and the what the heck is going on with my Apple device/s. The staff is very patient and knowledgeable to the level of being a geek, which is a good thing. Once their hands are on your device there is a fee, which is very reasonable. If you should require their services the turn around time is pretty decent. We were told 2-3 days which was fine with us. The staff member did in fact help us to retrieve some lost files that were very close to our hearts. I had an excellent experience having my MacBook Pro repaired here! When I got it back after their repair work, it worked like new with NO data loss and it has been working for 6 months after the repair with no problems. Their prices are very reasonable - half the Apple Store quote, the repair went smoothly, and they stand behind their work. Here at the details: I had significant water damage to my MacBook Pro laptop - spilled a glass of water on the keyboard. The display stopped working and the laptop won't turn on for several days. When I could turn it on (which I shouldn't have done), I could use it with an external monitor. Eventually I told the laptop to Apple & Mac Solutions. They needed to do diagnostics including getting to the electronics board. They have a set fee for this and made sure I understood that. It diagnostic fee was put toward a repair if I chose to have them do repairs. They showed me where the water had gone (almost everywhere) and the area where the chip that controls the display is located. There was clear corrosion in that area. The rest of the electronics looked fine. They recommended replacing the display which they tested and determined had failed and the display chip and gave me a quote for repair. In the end, I also had the keyboard replaced because it was "wonky" after I had removed some keys to try and dry up the water spill. They were able to get everything they needed , do the repair, and return it to me within a week. When I got it back it was like new! The keyboard felt so much better and everything else worked like new. No data was lost or compromised during the repair so I didn't have to use a backup but I had one. Finally, the cost was very reasonable. The Apple Store had looked at the damage and decided they would have to replace everything except the shell. This would have cost as much as a new laptop and they would be using "just like new" refurbished parts and only warrantee the repairs for 3 months. At Apple & Mac Solutions, they charged less than half of Apple's estimate, did specific repairs, fully tested everything, and used NEW (not "just like new") parts. They're warrantee was similar to Apple BUT it was clear to me that Apple & Mac Solutions stood behind their repairs. read more

I went to Apple & Mac solutions with a simple job - cleaning my iPhone charging port and replacing its cracked screen protector. I was in and out in 15 minutes and didn't even have time to start my shopping at berkeley bowl. I have a wired headset, and another issue I had was that my charging port rejects any third-party lightning cord attached to my Mac dongle. Michael (?) explained this is deliberate by Apple to prevent third-party cords from messing up the phone. I had no idea about that. Unfortunately, my Senior brain forgot that the main reason I went there was to change the battery. So I'll have to go back. I came in with an old IMac that no longer booted. It belonged to my father in law, and the main concern was to rescue the data. Folks at their location next to Berkeley Bowl West walked me through the options, and within a couple days they had reported on the repair status and rescued all the data for us, all at a reasonable price. Our very old iMac died and we just weren't sure if we should let it go or keep it around. Manu and his team are exceptional. First, they could not possibly be a nicer group of people. (And, we had the pleasure of meeting Calliope, his most delightful dog.) They were very honest about setting forward the pros and cons of repair, not pushy at all. We decided to go ahead since they diagnosed the screen as the problem--for which they did not charge up front. They offered us an old screen available for a cheaper price with an almost imperceptible smudge on it. Manu also had some extra RAM that he said was gathering dust and they installed that for free to speed up the computer! But wait, since the machine is old, Manu added a fan app to automatically pop on and keep everything cooled down. Everything works beautifully and though the old girl has some years left in her yet, Manu recommended some things to do to safeguard our data going forward. What more could anyone want? Seriously. My MacBook Air fizzled out in the middle of a Zoom meeting while plugged in to an outlet. I took it to the big box geeks first, who said they couldn't get it to start and would have to send it out to Apple. Baseline cost, without a service contract, over a $1000. I decided to find a third party shop to see if I could salvage the data. It was either that or take a hammer to the darn thing. It was only a 2019 devise, but it was either pay Apple to repair it or use the money to buy a new Mac at the big box store. I ended up doing that, but still wanted to see if I could access the data. The guys in this shop made it clear that some retail stores don't have a clue about Mac devises. They took it back and we're able to get it working almost immediately. I was surprised and confused why they other guys couldn't. I gave them the ok to open up the laptop and all they could see is that a new battery was needed. Nothing else was obvious. I was able to pick up my laptop the next day, new battery installed and less than $300 for parts and labor. I could have saved myself a lot more money, if I had just come here first! Oh well. My family will make use of the old Mac while I break in the new one. Bottom line is that these guys new their stuff. I would return hands down if I had a Mac problem in the future. read more

That meant a lot to me because the data was valuable and the idea of shipping my drive off to an undisclosed location was not appealing. I will make this as short and sweet as possible. I was initially greeted with warmth and welcome ... I worked mostly with Manu. Manu Ttried to help me recover file for which I was grateful and offered to pay for their time. They said it's OK then proceeded to sell me a battery for my computer and my phone I decided not to buy the batteries but I did Ask about a screen protector, and the stoppers that go on the bottom of my laptop. I was given a price for the stoppers, but I was not given a price for the screen protector until the work was complete. I had a privacy screen protector they replaced it with a basic screen protector without the privacy shield then charge me $45. I guess my issue was with the lack of communication of the service cost and the screen protector. I ended up paying $110 For the stoppers The screen protector, and the service initially was told I would not be charged. In the future, it would be nice to be clear on the cost upfront before my phones switched away, and the work completed read more

They were so warm, offering tea while I was waiting and patiently explaining what they'd found when they took apart the raid array storage device we'd been using to back up videos/photos. I have a 2017 27" iMac w/ Retina 5K, 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, Radeon Pro 580 8 GB, 40 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 and HAD a 3.12 TB Fusion Drive. As with all spinning discs the Fusion drive failed. I FREAKED OUT. I totally thought it was entirely a SSD, oh how wrong I was. I'm a Designer & Photographer who had about 2TB+ of files accumulated over 5 years all local and not backed up. I feared all was lost. Manu went ABOVE & BEYOND, using every program and trick he had, to try to recover as much of my data as he possibly could. I'm talking my wedding photos, irreplaceable documents & data galore. He gives you near forensic data recovery service. This isn't an IT place... this is an IT-GOD-MODE place. Not only did he check in regularly and stay within my tight budget, but he replaced that crap HDD with a brand spanking new 4 TB SSD!!! Reinstalled my iOS and gave me as many files back as he could recover. It was A LOT of FILES! I was in tears when I saw the final result. I fully expected to buy a new computer, lose all my data and chalk myself up to being an idiot. Manu literally said "No." and saved the day, my life, my sanity, my data and my computer!! I'd like to preface this with some of my background as a Mac user, and Mac Tech. I've been a Mac user since the early 1990's. My first Mac being a Centris 610 with 4 MB of RAM. I also used to work in Mac IT - as aLab Tech, Lead Hardware Tech, and finally as the Technical Director of the Mac Lab at the Academy of Art college in the mid to late 1990's. I worked as a Mac tech for FCB advertising, and Mann Consulting in SF. That being said, my true passion and calling has always been art and graphic design, for the past 24 years I've been a freelance designer and Art Director. Over the years, my hardware and troubleshooting skills fell behind the latest tech, but I still have a decent understanding of the basics. My 2019 27" iMac suddenly had a lot of issues. It was rebooting, having kernel panics, I tried wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS, did hardware diagnostics, called Apple support, etc ... Everything and everyone pointed the issue being a hard drive failure. Apple would only replace the Fusion Drive with another Fusion Drive - which are known to be problematic. After calling around to a lot of places and getting estimates - Apple & Mac solutions offered the best option to me, and I saw that they had solid ratings - so I took it there. They replaced the drive with an SSD one for around $ 500 - about the same price Apple was going to charge me to replace it with another Fusion Drive. I felt the SSD would be faster (it was/is), and more reliable. After the initial repair, my iMac technically worked - but was stuck at running Monterey, and wouldn't update to Ventura or Sonoma (even though it was running Ventura previously.) I had deadlines and work I needed to take care of, so I took it home and worked with it for a couple of weeks. It would randomly reboot. Sometimes it'd be fine for 2-3 days, on Monday after sending final files to a client, it started to reboot. Over and over and over again. I zapped the PRAM, and a bunch of other things. I rebooted in recovery mode and disk tools said the (new) HD was unrepairable. I called the shop and they had me bring it back in on Monday. They did more work on it, and it seems like the issue was with the added on memory chips. After removing those, they were able to update it to Ventura again, and were nice enough to stay open after-hours for me to be able to get down there, pay for the labor and pick it up rather than having to wait until the next day. Knock on wood, it's been running the latest version of Ventura since then. (I'm waiting to update to Sonoma after all of this stuff going on with it.) It hasn't rebooted on its own, and it's purring like it used to ever since I got it. I want to thank Michael for his customer service, understanding and professionalism, as well as sense of humor - as a former IT person I know those things aren't easy to pull off all of the time with stressed out people who need their computers to be working again. The repairs were not "cheap" - but they were very reasonable and less painful than having to buy a brand new computer at a time where I didn't really have the resources to comfortably replace my current one. Every question I had was explained to me clearly so that I was able to make the best decision for my next course of action. While I was in the store, another customer had an issue with their iPhone camera, and they actually had the honor to tell them that Apple could replace and fix it at a cheaper price. I really respect a business that has that sort of transparency. That's rare these days. Knock on wood - I might be able to get another 2-3 years out of this thing before I have to replace it. My last one was a Mac Pro Tower that lasted 10 years. read more
