I really struggle with this review. I left my MacBook pro with them mid-December, got it back the first time in Jan 21, had to take it back twice due to their issue and finally got it back Feb 13. I've paid almost $1k to replace the logic board, keyboard & mouse pad. The quote for the logicboard was $200 over what Apple quoted me ($680). They replaced my keyboard with a super janky 3rd party keyboard that bowed near the screen, sounded horrible and the space bar only worked if it was touched directly in the middle of it. I took it back & they replaced the entire keyboard/mousepad again but with an Apple product. Only this time the touch id key wouldnt work. So I had to take it back AGAIN and the tech cannibalized my original keyboard for its touch ID key. And they tried to charge me for that change but the tech told them that was a mistake. I had to wait while they called the tech to get that straightened out. Now I wonder if that's why I paid so much. I really wanted to support a local business, they came highly recommended by a friend but I didnt have a good experience. Maybe they are better for PCs. And now the bottom half of my laptop has rough edges from the tools the tech used. The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth and set me back months for my work. read more

Oh my goodness!! I have found my forever tech repair shop. The fan went out in my Lenovo 2020 laptop but I needed it for my scheduled exams on Monday 8/26. I went into the shop in a panic on Wednesday 8/21 and asked if my laptop could be repaired by the following Friday 8/23 and was told they would try. Friday rolls around but the fan had not been delivered until that Friday after 6:00 pm when the shop was closed. The tech actually took my laptop home, repaired it and had it ready by 8:00pm that day! My beloved laptop his humming like brand and I'm ready for my exams! Remember the days when a business actually answered the phone and didn't close for lunch? If you ever have the hinges on your laptop fail, you too will become unhinged. Brought my laptop in on a Wednesday afternoon and they called me mid-morning on Thursday to let me know that it was fixed and ready to pick up. Mind blown at the efficiency. Keep in mind that they are a little old school, you will be writing your details on a piece of paper and walk away without with a claim check or proof of what you left behind. These folks are as a real as it gets and eager to share their knowledge. So much better than big box stores that are trying to tech. read more

Alex and E.G. saved me a LOT of money. My MacBook Air's drive was absolutely full. I couldn't even download a program specifically to clean it. After weeks of research on Google, Reddit, asking friends, nobody could figure it out. I had deleted all the files, pictures, apps, documents, music, and everything from my laptop. We had no idea why it was still "full". When looking at the Storage, most of the space was being occupied by "Other". Nobody could figure out what "Other" was composed of. Great place! They fixed power port on a powered speaker that 3 other places would not even touch.

The screen failed on my laptop. I'm well aware that it could've been one of two things: A failed display (pricey) or a failed connection to the display (less pricey). Any computer tech company could've fixed the connection but told the customer the display failed, charged a premium for it, when all they did was fix the connection. In my case, it was the connection, they were straight up about the diagnosis, and they fixed it within four hours. This company is straight-up honest, reliable, quick, and reasonably priced. I went into this store looking for just a smaller & lighter laptop to replace my 4 month old 15' Toshiba laptop since I am starting to do more consultant work. I ended up being talked into trading my new laptop for a 2001 smaller & lighter Toshiba laptop that ended up having internal wifi and operating system issues. The internal wifi only works on open networks. The operating system needed a re-install. Ive been to this store at least 5 times in the past 10 yrs. I like to shop with the small businesses in my town instead of online. But today was my last time there! I bought a charger for my laptop 6 weeks ago. Yesterday the material that wraps around the cord itself came loose, looked like it split. My friend thats a techie said to take it back, it looked cheap. I paid $38.00 Their policy is "4 weeks return policy. 4 weeks warranty". They wouldnt take it back and refund me. The manager and technician at Gen Computers is great; definitely knowledgeable and trustworthy tech guys. I came in with two problems: an external drive that wasn't reading (needed data backup) and a MacBook Pro Retina that wasn't turning on (and also needed data backup). My LaCie external drive which I used for work was no longer reading on my computer; it was prompting me to back up and to reformat. I brought it to the guys at Gen Comps hoping to get a diagnoses and hopefully get my drive back up and running. They had advised me that because it is a mechanical drive and that I carry and travel with it, the drive itself had been damaged. Luckily, they were able to read the data (upon extracting the mechanically chip out of that aluminum case, and advised that I back the data onto a chip-type hard drive (similar to what we find in laptop computers). I was unaware that such hard drives existed but it made sense to make the switch; I was told they were much more stable and better suited for traveling with. Thankfully they had stock and assisted in the backup into the new drive. For my MacBook Pro, I had gone into the Apple store for a diagnosis and was told it had to be sent into the store for repair. I was advised to backup the hard drive because there was a chance my drive could also be damaged. I brought my computer and drive to General Computers and they assisted in backing up the data and had assured me that the drive was not damaged and chances are my data should be fine. (After receiving my computer back from the Apple shop, indeed my data was fine and luckily I didn't lose anything). The Gen Computers guys definitely knew what they were doing and made me feel safe and secure that they assisted with all my data backup. I would come back to them again if I get stuck in a similar situation in the future. read more

My printer ceased working the day before my research paper was due. I was under the impression that there was a kinkos/fed ex center around the Grand Lake area and was disappointed not to find one. I was referred to General Computers by the folks at the "Mailbox" store. I walked in and asked where I could print something off of my thumb drive. The first thing they asked me for was a TEN DOLLAR DEPOSIT. I said, "no, I will not give you ten dollars, I have only have a five dollar bill." I was immediately put off and asked how much it cost to print. They told me it was $4 for 15 minutes of INTERNET use, but if I printed really quickly they would not charge me. In that case, it was only supposed to be .20 cents per page. When I went to the computers they were not turned on and took FOREVER to boot up. They had old programs, nothing up to date. I printed my 16 pages and went to the front to pay. The bitch at the counter charged me $4 for my time at the computer, even though most of that time was spent turning the damn thing on...not to mention I did not use any internet. Plus my $3.20 for 16 pages. What does that add up to? $7.20. Thats right, SEVEN DOLLARS AND TWENTY CENTS to print 16 pages on plain ass white paper. This place disgusts me. They are so obviously money hungry it is absurd. There are signs everywhere offering a million different services, all at which come at an unclear, undisclosed price. They couldn't even explain to me why they wanted a ten dollar deposit for the computer. NEVER AGAIN! read more

They've been in business for decades and don't emphasize polish - so expect a bit of time warp when you walk in the door. On the other hand you know the work is what is solid and keeping them in business. They offer general computer advice and service. You can trust these technology wizards 100%. I've been going here for years and each time I'm more impressed. Steve Albert and Alex Wang are pros at what they do and they love their work; it shows. I've been going here for years. Steve installed a solid-state drive for me, which has my computer humming along at light speed, plus I have more disk space than I know what do with. I had asked if I needed a new computer; Steve did a check and told me, no. Advised me to replace the drive and that's it - saved me a thousand bucks, easy. More recently, my desktop was lagging and the fan wouldn't shut off. I thought it might be a dust problem but rather than mess with it myself, I brought it in. Alex vacuumed out the dust but the problem persisted. He noticed one of the chips was abnormally hot so he fashioned a bracket with some tin snips and and repositioned my fan. He also went into my system and disabled some startup programs that were clogging up my CPU. In the end he charged me for a half hour, even though he did more than I originally asked and worked for a full hour on it, all in. I paid for a full hour anyway - he earned it. I will bring all of my computer problems to General Computer Systems. Proud to have them in my neighborhood! read more

Stay away. The guy who owns this place is greedy, mean, and dishonest. One of the technicians gave me an estimate for 1/2 hour of work. When I got to the store to pick up my fixed computer, the owner tried to charge me for a full hour. After I showed the owner that the estimate only authorized 1/2 hour of work, he pitched a hissy fit, raising his voice at me and the technician, then pouting like a little girl. He pulled out other customers' work orders to show me that he never charges anyone for less than one hour. That's right. As a matter of store policy, he refuses to charge for less than one hour. My work order was simple -- removing the face plate off a laptop monitor and tightening a screw on the hinge. It is ridiculous that he tried to strongarm me into paying for an hour's labor. One star for the technician who tried to do the right thing. read more

So I don't normally write Yelp reviews, especially not negative ones, but this place deserves it. I took in a desktop that was having Windows boot issues. I was almost positive that it wasn't a hardware issue, and that the software had been corrupted. I had run disk checks myself and no errors had come up. However I was desperate not to mess up the data on the computer so I took it in. They looked at my hard drive and were "sure" that it was a hard drive issue because they've had problems with that brand. They said they'd do a check to see if that was the case and backup any data they could. This would be $65. I thought, "ok, fine" and went with it. Turns out their service confirmed what I'd already known: it was a software, not a hardware issue. I paid $65 to have someone tell me what I already knew. That's annoying, but hey, I agreed to it right? Fair enough. However, I come home, and no joke four cables in my desktop had not been properly placed or hooked up on various drives or on my motherboard. What the hell? I'm lucky I know a bit about computers or I would have no idea what was wrong or how to fix it. In addition, I'd left my power cable with them, but when I asked for it back they said "we never let customers bring in power cables." They eventually gave me one, not my own, but it works. All this left me with the impression that the workers at this store do not take care with the machines they work with. If your computer and the information on it is precious to you, I'd highly recommend not making the mistake I did and going elsewhere. read more

We've been using Gen Computer to build our desktops and service our PCs/laptops for 25 yrs. Yup, 25 full yrs. Their service is excellent and E.G., the owner, knows his stuff. We have had them build two top-of-the-line desktops for us over the yrs - one is mine and the other is now repurposed by my spouse as a download-only PC. The latter is still chugging along faithfully after 15+ yrs hard usage, which is pretty impressive. Every once in a blue moon we have to take one of our 6 machines in. They have serviced our ASUS netbook, Toshiba Qosmio gaming laptop, as well as the desktops. We've never had a problem with their service personnel or quality of work. Several times when the problem has been minor they have just fixed the machine, handed it back to us and said, "No charge." How nice is that? We have gone in just to ask for advice on computers and peripherals - not when they're busy on weekends, mind you - and they have always been generous and honest in their opinions. We're very happy to have discovered GCS early on, and it's been a great working relationship. And no, we don't use our PCs for business, we just love our toys! read more

Most important information, first!: -Ask for an estimate, before you leave. Have them write it down and get a receipt. I Never got one... -If they attempt to con you by going over the estimated price, or do work they did not notify you of (they are required to notify, by law), demand the estimated cost you were given, initially. The bottom of their contract states this policy (I pointed it out to them, so it might not be there, now). They get one star for being compliant, instead of continuing their cowardice. Using my 30-day warranty: Heading in, tomorrow afternoon, to have the same problem fixed, twice. First time: they replaced the entire part (without notifying me, or letting me know it would go beyond the estimated cost). We'll see how that goes. I will be asking for a full refund. read more

When I took my laptop to GCS, I was assisted by red-haired guy kind of nerdy but the smell of alcohol was on his breath. I had wrote my password on a post it and placed on the back so that he can log on to my computer. Well. I had to keep calling asking what's going on and please don't over charge me. He asked for my password and said that was the reason he wasn't working on my laptop. Also, they claim it's first come first serve, so your computer will be sitting their unless you put an additional $75.00 rush fee, which only guarantees that they will look at it sooner than later. It took 7 days to return my laptop. The charge is $75.00 per hour and I was charged $112.50. I believe it should have been $75.00. I will definitely look around for a reasonable and more professional place when it comes to computer repairs. read more

The first repair to my lap top took about 6 weeks. Fine, they said Alex was waiting for the right part. The quote was between this and that, and bit steep. When the repair was complete, it lasted 3 weeks. I returned it and waited several weeks. After I called, it took several more weeks. We called again. A few days later, we got a call it was ready for pick up. When I picked up the computer, there was an additional charge, which no one had mentioned at all. Since I had been quoted an original price for the repair of my computer, and that in fact, was not a repair, I refuted the extra charge. We definitely had different views on what good service and fairness is. I only hope that this repair works, because I am not going back. read more

I saw from the reviews that this place was on the expensive side. But my friend said they had this particular 2 prong to 3 prong converter for cheap, so I went there to get one. It cost $1.99. I remember seeing them on B&H Photo for $2.75 for a two-pack, so I thought, no shipping, it's not THAT bad, and bought one. Then I biked down to ACE hardware down the street for some other stuff, and I saw that they had the same kind of converter, better looking, for 59 cents! That's 29% of the price! In other words, they were charging over 3 times as much. Moreover, I saw that they sell the Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter for 29.99. Apple store, $19.00. They sell the HP 92 ink for $22.99. CVS, $19.99. FedEx Kinko's, $15.99. Amazon, 2 pack for $27. Anyway, you get the idea. read more

This place stocks a few things that places like Best Buy won't have, like cables and connectors that aren't made by Belkin and priced out of this world. But if you want anything that IS name brand, expect to pay at least 10% more than a Best Buy or Frys. I've seen fans and power supplies at half the power of what you can find at Best Buy for two or three times the price. Maybe they need a new supplier? They sell last generation hardware - but at todays generation prices. Who is going to buy an 80gig hard drive - USED - from them, when you can get one - NEW - at Best Buy for 2/3rds less? I don't know where they are geting their pricing strategy, but it needs help. If it takes them that much to stay in business, they should consider getting out.
