Love the food. Hate the wait. As amazing as the waffles are, they take for bloody EVER to be served. I'm not going to give it 2 or 3 stars for the slow service, considering the glorious food, but I can't give it 5 stars. EDIT/UPDATE: I feel like it's only fair to say that the wait does not stop me from going, or make the food any less fantastic. You just need to plan ahead. I do know they are making some changes to improve times, and the staff is ALWAYS lovely... I just realized my review might have turned people off in a way I didn't intend. GO. EAT. LOVE. So these waffles aren't bad, but for upwards of $5 or $6 I expected them to be AWESOME. You pay for everything extra, even syrup. The flavor of the waffle is somewhat unique. Almost like caramelized sugar. This is what they pride themselves on -- the uniqueness of their recipe. Lots of creative combinations for toppings. Let's be honest: Off the Waffle isn't a restaurant. It's a couple of guys making waffles in a house. They're cool guys - they even take (and encourage) barter, as well as good old fashioned cash - but still, it's two dudes in a house, and you're buying waffles in the living room. There are absolutely zero frills. On a good day, you can get a napkin and some honey to put on your waffle. On a not-so-good day, there's no honey and you might have to wipe your mouth with the bag. The Liège waffles are as good as advertised, though. Their light, crispy texture is as good as waffles get. I'm not a big waffle fan but I have to say I enjoy these. Yes, they're small - but do you really need to eat a lot of waffle? They're ridiculously overpriced too - I'd bet the prices are more than 20 times the food cost - but why quibble? It's not like you're going to make these things a dietary staple. Quibbles? The place is full of loiterers...if you're not in the mood to listen to a bunch of noise, or if being around smelly, scrotty-looking dudes ruins your appetite, steer clear. And, the place is way slow. They don't have many waffle irons, so if there are many people in front of you it's gonna be a long wait...much longer than a waffle is worth. If you have a trace of impatience about you, or if you're in a hurry, Off the Waffle is a bad choice. On a slow night when you're craving something a little different, a little sweet, without the pretentiousness of Sweet Life or the dairy overload of your favorite ice cream place, give Off the Waffle a try. If you're a waffle lover, you'll love it...and even if you're not, you'll probably enjoy it. UPDATE: I tried OTW again after receiving a nice note from one of the owners updating me on their plans to add capacity. This time there wasn't anybody else waiting and the waffles were ready pronto. Ordered the frikkin chicken, fried chicken, a vinegar based slaw, apple, tatziki and maple syrup. This was great, this is my kind of place! I love crazy combinations, it all worked. This ran us 10$, kinda of on the high end. My wife ordered the banana waffle w/ whip cream and belgian chocolate chips and dark chocolate, very tasty.... I used syrup from my other waffle and it was almost too much sweet, tastes just fine without! will run you 4.50$ and an extra .75 cents for whip cream. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because when my wife and I initially walked in we were confused on what to do....do you order up front? do you sit down and grab a menu from the front counter? No employees were in sight so we ordered up front after hitting a bell to get their attention, (kinda of weird.) The waffles are super tasty, but the restaurant space needs work. Off the Waffle was very cool in its original location on 7th Ave, and as a food cart at summer festivals. This new location on Willamette is acceptable---it can accommodate more people and I'm sure the kitchen is larger---but the ambience is a mess and I never feel compelled to stay longer than a few minutes. Whereas the old house on 7th was funky and fun, the new Willamette shop feels like a cluttered Dunkin Donuts, complete with unappealing fluorescent lighting. My suggestions: * trash the "Off the Waffle" video game (I think it's broken anyway) and make space for more seating. * make the barter board more accessible * install some mood lighting read more

YUM I was taken here by my boyfriend and friend, both raving about their waffles. I'm more of a pancake/crepe fan but oh man, my Guiseppe waffle was ah-mazing. The huge dollop of Nancy's yogurt was a little too much for me, but it's because I'm not a huge yogurt fan anyways. The waffle itself so was delicious, I wish I ordered two. The only downsides were the small party of flies inside and also the service. I guess they used to have it so you ordered at the counter but now they changed to tableside service so that made things awkward and it took FOREVER for the waitress to take our order, it was a little ridiculous. (Revised review after many visits) Original Review: I was at Sam Bond's for bingo night and the owners came by handing out free waffle's to the crowd. I have to agree, these were by far the best waffle's I've ever had. And that's even when they were cold! They were sweeter than most waffle's, which is probably why they are so good. I'd also guess they sprinkle them with sugar before cooking because they had crunchy bits of caramelized sugar on the outside. Additional Info: Off the Waffle has now moved to my neck of the woods in South Eugene. With actual room to sit and multiple waffle irons, service is generally better than the old shop in the whitaker. I do somewhat miss the delightful carryable waffles with a slit cut for fillings, however serving them in a traditional manner does give them many more options. I still find the waffle's absolutely delicious. Most of the criticism I see on yelp is reasonably valid. Yes, it is fairly pricey. Yes, it gets very crowded and service can be slow at times. Yes, almost every time I've been in there the floor is a bit nasty. Still, I love it. The waffle's are not everyone's cup of tea (I've taken many people there, and for some it was love at first bite, but others were not a fan of this waffle style), but if you like them, well, you're not going to find it anywhere else around town. I feel like this place goes through an identity crisis on a regular basis. Every time I go in they've moved everything around. They change tables and their arrangements. They change where they put the trash, the coffee, the menus, the piano, the video game. Now they've got a piano. Don't get me wrong, I love piano, but piano music during a rush on Saturday morning in an old Baskin Robbins store (think acoustics) just doesn't work. I couldn't hear the people I came out to breakfast with. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the waffles and they're so creative with their menu items, but I feel like they keep trying to make "fun" changes that just end up appearing really inconsistent and pointless. Still overpriced, imho. For example, you can order the overachiever (banana, chocolate chips, and chocolate syrup) and add strawberries for about a buck less than ordering the bully (strawberries, chocolate chips, and chocolate syrup) and adding bananas. Off The Waffle has great waffles- no doubt about it. Service wise, we waited an hour before our waffles came, and even then we waited a little longer because the wrong waffles came out. Waffle wise, the waffles were fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. They were filling and the flavor combinations were A+. Better than Waffle Window in Portland, I think. Overall, Off The Waffle is not worth the hype that it gets- but then again most places don't live up to the hype that they get. In the past I've have had people grab me something from off the waffle, and personally I never had a huge craving for waffles, but with the rants and raves these guys get I needed to really just go in and try some. I walked in after having a meal next door and wanted to share something with my significant other, it wasn't too busy and 4-5 tables were sitting. We ordered a waffle to share, sat down, talked and talked, looked around, at our phone, around again, at the phone, specifically at the clock. I could have started a snail race and watched them cross the line before anything happened. 30 minutes pass by easily, and we're sitting here wondering where our waffle was. I usually give an establishment the benefit of the doubt, maybe something was going wrong, short staffed, things that you can't see happening. But the thing was, everyone else around us were wondering where our orders were. Some who were in the establishment, ordered, and sat down well before we arrived (we were next door eating a meal). I could look around and see everyone looking around, asking themselves if these waffles were being imported from the space station. People started getting impatient, one individual canceled their order and left. I should have followed, but I was sure we would get our waffle! Orders start crawling in, people start getting their meals, but wait where was our order? The last straw was when a party after us got their plates. We ask where our order was and was asked what our order was, first sign that we should have exited after asking for a refund. But, we're already committed this long, what's another few minutes. We told them we ordered half an hour ago and what we had ordered, apparently our order decided to grow feet, maybe because it knew it could take a smoke break before anyone looked at it. We get our waffle, and I am beyond baffled, it took 45 or so minutes to get our waffle that consisted of a waffle, some cut strawberries, and chocolate drizzle. From there, judgement was brought down as I told myself I would never return The kicker in all of this is the fact we were seated very much next to the cash register and had a slight view into the back. We were able to see a few employees standing around, chatting and free of hands. They should have just put a sign that said make your own waffles, pay us though. Maybe it was a bad day, who knows. I will not however return after this horrendous experience, despite the fact that I didn't dislike the waffle, but it wasn't extraordinary, didn't make my jaw drop, didn't suddenly make me bust out a Carlton. read more

Good food but awful wait times and horrible service. Twice now I've waited 30 minutes for my food. When I asked them about it they said there were orders before me...except everyone else around me had already gotten their food. Well, one couple before us did ask for a refund and left, which is what I should've done. It made it more frustrating to see the workers in the back laughing and goofing off. It was obvious they were not doing anything. I just don't understand why it would take so long to make waffles, especially the second time when all I got was a waffle with sliced strawberries and chocolate! The second time I went there was a lady who came in and said she had a Groupon deal. The server asked if she printed it out and the lady said she forgot it. Then the server asked if she could log in and show her, so the lady says it is her cousin's account and doesn't know the password. The lady then tells the server that for sure it is in her order history on Groupon, but coincidentally didn't have her phone. Honestly, it was quite comical watching the scene unfold. It's obvious the lady was hustling. I couldn't help but laugh and notice the workers in the back watching the whole scene instead of putting together orders. "What's a waffle cost, anyhow?" Tried it the other night on a late-evening whim. Uniquely Eugene... Good waffles, but really, who goes to a cafe to get...just waffles? Occupies the former Baskin-Robbins space on S. Willamette. They've reorganized it a bit, although it's still a pretty sterile spot. I had one of the few non-waffle items; a scramble which was quite good - full of goat cheese, onions, potatoes, etc. Well-made and served with a side waffle. If they offered more stuff like this on their everyday menu, I could see myself going here more often. Also tried a couple of bites of a breakfast waffle, with bacon, egg, and rich maple syrup. Doesn't seem like it'd work, but it did. The bacon was great. Looked fairly small but packed a rich punch. I don't see a lot of occasion to go in (late-night waffle cravings are relatively rare for me) but I will keep it in mind for late-night dining. Oh, yum. Who needs to go as far as Portland to get a waffle? If the Waffle Window's "Triple B" (bacon, brie, basil) has a cult following, then Off the Waffle's Self-Fulfilling Prophecy (bacon, maple syrup, one perfect sunny-side up egg) really doesn't get its due credit. But what I love the most about the very organic OTW is that you don't have to sit outside and freeze to death while you have your waffle. The waffle shop is warm and inviting, with its board games, its free roll of wacky OTW stickers, and its wordless french music wafting in the background. Booths are plush and clean, and coffee mugs are preheated (!) Wood-roasted Sumatran coffee is served alongside cream & agave nectar, honey and raw sugar. Teas run from the quaint Earyl Grey and Darjeeling, to crazy herbal hippie concoctions of everything found in Oregon's backyard. The waffles themselves are Liege waffles: ensconced in a layer of caramelized pearl sugar, crisp and sweet, buttery and light; they're the perfect plate for piling a brunch on. Before I had the lamb waffle, I fell in love with its description, which painted the pristine portrait of spiced, ground lamb stuffed with tangy goat cheese, plentiful leaves of fresh, spicy basil, one warm slice of tomato, an oozy, bright orange sunny-side up egg, and cool homemade tzatziki sauce over one square waffle. (Sea salt & freshly ground perppercorn a given.) Seriously? It was the best savory waffle I'd ever had. The Lambalicious was followed, in close competition, by the H-Bomb, a simple waffle blanketed with melted havarti, crisp fuji apple and cinammon. Like apple pie, like grilled cheese, but BETTER. We came in one morning after deciding that liege waffled sounded about right for day fuel. After sitting like a vulture waiting for a table, we swooped in and our orders came. I had The Sweet Funk Machine (pear, Gorgonzola, wildflower honey, and cinnamon), she had an H-Bomb (melted havarti, fuji apple, cinnamon), and we "split" a Guiseppe (honey yogurt, banana, crushed pecans, coconut flakes)--it's a delight dining with a girl who is overly-ambitious with her food orders. The food was stellar. The flavor profiles were satisfying while still being new and fun, and the texture of the waffle combinations was great--nothing soggy or mushy. As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, seating can be a bit of a pain, and you bus your own tables, but if you go at an off time it shouldn't bee too bad. I had been wanting to try Off the Waffle for a while and finally had my opportunity this morning for brunch. The night before, my boyfriend read the meal descriptions from their online menu and we both decided we liked the idea of eggs, avocado and goat cheese on a waffle. This morning, we walked through the door to a full dining area lit by rare Eugene sunshine, grabbed a couple thick heavy menus and waited in line for 15 minutes before ordering our two Goat in the Headlight meals. As luck would have it, a table opened up as soon as we finished ordering and we snatched it up. The service was fabulous. Very friendly. The server had forgotten to give us silver wear at the cashier station so he ran over to buss our table and hand us eating utensils. The food didn't take very long to cook and when it arrived, it smelled amazing. The smokiness of the paprika mingled with the sweet waffle underneath. Several large slices of perfectly ripe avocado smeared with mounds of creamy goat cheese topped with two sunny side eggs, yolk dripping seductively over everything. The taste was a pleasant mix of sweet and savory and before we knew it, our plates were empty. The only reason this review is a three instead of a four is because the glass I chose at the drink station was dirty, which was remedied by the second glass I picked and the first set of silver wear looked as though it hadn't even been washed with large food particles cemented to the tines and edges of the knife. The second set was fine but the experience was an appetite spoiler. The floor was also quite dirty; however, the design of the dining area wasn't optimal for sweeping with a large broom. Came here on Labor Day with friends who raved about this place. Got the banana split waffle. The waffle was pretty good. I was disappointed there was no whole wheat/grain option but I understand that it's a liege waffle and that doesn't affect my rating. What does affect my rating is the lack of topping choices. All the sweet creeps seemed like they were the same (banana or berry) with whipped cream (could've been sweeter but I appreciate that it was homemade) and ice cream that I knew I shouldn't be having for breakfast. None of the savory creeps really stood out either. Lastly, we had to wait an hour. I'm sorry but you're making WAFFLES. What are you doing?! Milking the cow?! Just pour the batter into the mold. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes then put toppings and max it takes 10 minutes. I went here with a large group and we were easily accommodated. We were informed by the staff that our large group would drive the kitchen wait time for brunch to around 25 minutes (though I swear it took some of our group members more like 40 minutes to get their food). I'm willing to let the long wait time slide because we received friendly service and also because the waffles were completely delightful. I ordered the caprese waffle (tomato, basil, and mozzarella cheese) from the "savory" list and added a sunny side up egg to it. The waffle has a certain sweetness that complimented the other ingredients so well, but it does make me wonder if the waffles from the "sweet" list would then be SUPER sweet? OTW is so typical of Eugene's food scene: pretty good quality with something weird thrown in that makes the experience somewhat diminished. I took my visiting mother-in-law and DLW to the location downtown for Saturday brunch. MIL had never encountered Liege-style waffles before, but she is a big fan of waffles in general, so this seemed like a good fit. She got one of the sweet topping combos with coconut, and was duly impressed. I had my usual Goat in the Headlights, and was as usual happy. DLW went with a combination of sweet and savory, with maple syrup on the side. MIL snapped up the syrup for herself, but DLW was fine with that. She also loved the hot chocolate. I ordered a hot tea, but had to go back to the counter to get it after the food delivered without it. The space downtown is so much nicer than the original location, which has lot parking as its only clear advantage. Their waffles are always better than I remember them to be and we love their outdoor sitting where we can bring our dog. I get the waffle with the apples and havarti cheese and my boyfriend gets the goat in headlights. I got the banana sundae and a pint of Oakshire Espresso stout. It was awesome. The waffle itself was chewy and delicious, like a baguette in the shape of a waffle. I didn't notice the little pearls of sugar as I was eating my waffle, but it was sweet and I don't know how much I would have enjoyed it with bacon and eggs like my neighbors were. (Plus I don't particularly enjoy bacon, so I wouldn't have liked it anyway). Pros: The food is unique, they serve Oakshire beer (always a plus! Espresso stout is so tasty!), and the staff is friendly. The waffles themselves are great. I really enjoyed the overachiever (banana with good quality chocolate chips). I appreciate that they put care into having quality ingredients. I was surprised at how much the flavor combinations were not to my taste. For example, all of the savory ones are already going to have the sweetness of the waffle, which I didn't really like in concert, plus a lot have syrup on them - counteracting the savory aspect! I love the idea of a waffle with savory toppings, but I think the waffle itself should be less sweet, then - remember that since these are Liege style, they have the carmelizing pearl sugar (according to the menu). Also, I just don't like coconut, and I think the owners of Off the Waffle do. And why do they have so much harvarti everywhere? I think a sweeter, softer cheese would be good on some of the sweet ones (the cream cheese is fine, but I'd think marscapone would be better). Well, they do have goat cheese, so that helps. I'd stick to the simple sweet waffles or just have the waffles fairly plain, but really I'll probably take my waffle business to someplace more to my taste. But I can see why this place would be perfect for someone with different tastes. read more

This place has officially started my love affair with omelettes. I came here one morning with two friends (because they finally got tired of me nagging about wanting waffles). I chose the special of the day; a bacon and spinach omelette with a waffle, along with a large orange juice(LOVE their OJ; it's super pulpy though, and I don't think that's for everyone!) The food came out faster than I expected, and I feel like I started to chow down before the waiter even put the plate down. Reasonable Prices 4. Gluten Free Waffle Option Bad (Restaurant Itself) 1. Not very much seating 2. Atmosphere is a little dingy/Eugeney not sure if this is on purpose. I ordered the gluten free waffle and the "Courtney Jensen" omelet. The omelet itself was light and fluffy but the gluten free waffle wasn't very flavorful and a bit dense. Unfortunately, the waiter gave me the wrong omelet and waffle (non gluten free) initially. Perhaps they need to just put a little toothpick in the orders that are gluten free or veggie in case people have severe allergies. Thankfully, I didn't have too much of a bad reaction to the gluten I did ingest. As for the gluten free waffle, I am not sure if they make the batter there or get the waffles from another location. If they make the batter there, they simply need to adjust their GF flours slightly to give the waffle a lighter texture and perhaps fold the batter with fluffed egg whites to lighten it up. I am a GF baker so I do have experience with GF flour ratios. My mom was not very impressed with her omelet as she also was given the wrong order. She is vegetarian and her omelet was full of bacon. I do not think my mom will be back but I am willing to give it another try as long as the cooks and the wait staff pay a tad more attention to the orders, especially when they are other than the regular menu items i.e. allergy/diet restrictions. Off the Waffle is average and is a nice change to the usual heavy lumberjack type breakfasts that one would get at a Denny's or IHOP. read more

Have I reviewed this already?! I am not sure how not if not. I LOVE them. I first tried one warm at an outdoor family event. YUM! Then I had some with my son and his kids, and we have been back a few times. I have even won a free waffle and a free yogurt (YUM) with fruit...it was Amazing. The waffles can be a bit rich for your tummy, but I really Love the Uniqueness and mingling of the flavors. I am a big sweet and savory fan. I do love the Fruit Party too though. :) Highly recommend the Eugene Locations, I have been to both! I think they are not open in the evenings now, just for brunch. Still Amazing. read more

Great food coffee awesome! Everything was organic and fresh ! Orange juice fresh squeezed and I had the waffle with all the fresh fruit apple pear banana and strawberry compote fresh whipped cream and side of bacon. He had the original waffle with organic maple syrup! Great fast service and fast not huge portions and yet extremely filling ! Order at counter and clean your own table so more of self service.
