Went to the goth night (ghost something?) tonight and it was a blast. The bar is gothic style too so it's marvelous. I heard it's usually an alternative / low key queer bar, more like mixed to me, which is nice. I know they recently made a change about free events turning into free with a drink purchase, which is reasonable! I've been low to no income, to where $10 is a splurge for me. I never got to go to a free event, but if I can't afford it I just don't go! Gotta keep the lights on, and $5 for a goth night was perfect for me. I had so much fun, the music was sweet and the outdoor area was nice too. The dance floor is small- kinda as big as their bathroom- but very accommodating, everyone seemed to have space to do their own thing. The one thing that did puzzle me is that they had a sign on the bathroom that said woman and then said it was all genders. I feel like maybe just taking the woman sign off would be simple enough. The message seems to just be "no urinal". The bathrooms are clean and plenty of stalls though!! I can't say anything about the drinks or food this time around, just the vibes which are great :) Lots of variety of events here, I'm sure I'll be back! read more

What a fun family night. I love that they allow all ages to come to drag bingo at 5pm on Saturdays. There were so many families enjoying time together. Some of the other reviews were negative on their food...but our food was fantastic. The burgers were moist and not greasy. The waffle cut fries were hot and crispy. The bartenders work non stop to get your drinks and food out quickly. My daughter loved the churro style donuts (but they are messy). The decor is a D&D dive bar scene....so many things to look at as you wait for bingo to start. They just changed the rules and you do have to pay $1.00 per person to play bingo...but where else can you get that type of entertainment for a dollar. We can't wait to return. read more

While my first visit was unsatisfactory due to unfriendly staff and an overall sense of feeling unwelcome, I thought I would attempt a second visit. At one point, the bartender disappeared for approximately fifteen minutes, leaving several patrons waiting without acknowledgment. When she finally returned, she casually mentioned she had been on a personal phone call. A second woman then stepped behind the bar, immediately clarifying that she was not, in fact, a bartender. When I expressed concern about the extended absence and lack of service--something I would consider standard feedback in any hospitality setting--I was abruptly told I was "speaking badly" about the staff and was asked to leave. This kind of defensiveness and disregard for patrons is deeply unprofessional, especially for an establishment that positions itself within a community where communication, accountability, and mutual respect are paramount. Eugene has a growing nightlife and alternative culture scene, and many people--locals and visitors alike--expect spaces that uphold those values. Based on my experiences, I cannot recommend The Serpent & the Sparrow. There are other venues in town that offer a far more welcoming environment, competent service, and a genuine respect for their patrons. read more

Food - My oh my. I should have gone with the fish and chips. My poor fried mushrooms were assaulted in the back of house and deep fried 50 shades of charred. The stew was very stout, like an aged stout...no I mean licking an old beer can out level and it needed an unscrewed lid salt pour out (twice). Ambiance - The bathroom wall writings are worth a stop and read. The decor is like a giant game of I-Spy, from owls to pearls to clowns to Freddie Mercury. The Krampus painting isn't for sale!!! The drag queen bingo experience and show was worth it all. Service - The bartender was great. She kicked a guy out for being a creep...how will they stay in business kicking local creeps out down by the river??! My rum had a little coke in it. The epitome of a dive bar! They couldn't honor the coupon I got on Yelp, "I have never seen that before. Where did you get that? It doesn't matter, I don't have either one of those beers." the bartender tells us. I don't like beer anyway, but I thought it was hilarious. They couldn't make any of the drinks that are on their menu "we can't afford the ingredients," the brtender tells us. What kind of drink can I get? "The basics" she tells us as we notice the 2 liter of coke in the well, no soda gun. I wasn't concerned as those soda guns get disgustingly toxic quickly. Can I get a veggie patty instead of a beef patty? "Yes, we only have veggie patties, we are out of burgers" The drinks were strong, the food was weak, but Maliena Bitch Cock, who hosted Drag Queen Bingo, was worth all of the chaos. She was hilarious and she gave us a great performance. I highly recommend coming here, at least once, for the experience of a great dive bar. I reviewed some of the photos on here and was interested in stopping by as make our way back home to Portland. We arrived just before opening and an employee talked to my partner about the reasoning for the changing of names and that was disheartening to hear. he mentioned all food is fresh scratch made, not frozen. In reasing these reviews, it seems like this establishment needs some help from Bar Rescue or something. It seems like it has a lot of potentia, prives a safe welcoming place for EVERYONE and the shows are great. I hope things turn around for the better soon! read more

I was excited to join their new years eve party with my sweetheart this year. It sounded fun, and the theme was interesting. The tickets I thought were a little expensive for the venue but we thought we'd give it a shot. However... we were very disappointed. We were advertised hor'dourves, which turned out to be just some hummus and a little pastry. They possibly oversold tickets with literally only two bartenders working so it was impossible to even get a drink. Needless to say we won't be back. We left feeling pretty scammed. New years got better at Blairally. I would suggest going there next year for anyone else who had the same experience. read more

I went to a live show here to support a friend of mine, and they didn't offer her so much as a microphone. She was forced to play at a table (when they have a stage) in front of the crowd and you could barely hear her over the bartender making drinks. Not to mention they were setting up for a show behind her on the stage. So unprofessional. Next time don't even bother booking someone for a show if you'll treat them like that. read more

I have been going to Old Nick's for four years now, and love the place. I went last night (Trivia night, on a Tuesday) I had recommended this place to friends that were in Eugene from California. They showed up a bit earlier than my husband and I. I went to order a drink, smiled and said hi to the bartender, ordered a vodka with muddled lemon and lime, and club soda. I then went to the restroom while my husband ordered. When I came back to the table my friends told me that while they were making my drink, the bartender called me "entitled" and that they can't "fucking believe some people" and threw the muddler. I was pretty taken aback. Then I realized that they were nasty to everyone. We all had a good time together but I am hoping that some attention is brought to this bartender treating customers this badly for no reason at all. read more

Old Nick's is one of my favorite Eugene haunts! I can't name another establishment I feel more at home in or more welcomed by. The drinks are always phenomenal, the food is great, but what I love best are the welcoming faces that always greet me, and the compassion they bring to this community. The aesthetic is phenomenal- 'whimsy witchy fantasy goth-tactic!' The events are creative, engaging and so fun. I can't say enough good things about Old Nick's, its kind staff, and its amazing owner. Forever one of my favorite places to be, which is saying a lot for someone who rarely feels like an insider anywhere. read more

I am glad the bar is open during this nightmare, but there's no excuse to charge $21 for two red potatoes, a two inch square piece of tasteless corned beef, 3 pieces of cabbage, a lot of water, piece of soda bread and half slice of cake with a crust (very similar to a chain grocery store ring cake). Unable to get through on the phone to a manager or owner, busy signal. You can blame me for not opening the Togo containers and looking at the food before driving off the parking lot. I've not been to this establishment before so I should've checked. I would think the cook that packed this would have felt really bad about sending this out the door. Sad, very sad. Old Nick's is a strong supporter of the "other" parts of our community--Pagans, Goths, LGBTQ+, and just generally quirky people. It is nice to feel welcomed in a place like this. I think they have a number of great events, both at night and on weekends. Gaming, drag shows, drag bingo, psychic fairs, costume events, movies, you-name-it. Always fun. I will say that the food could be a little better (and with smaller portions, at least for some of us), and the liquor selection could use expanding (the only rum they had was Captain Morgan Spiced), but the owner works very hard to create a safe space for many people to simply be themselves. I can get a rum and coke anywhere, I won't be necessarily accepted anywhere. Thank you, Emily! read more

I've had nothing but good experiences here. The atmosphere is cozy. Service is friendly. Food is delicious. They carry a variety of local brands of beer, cider, mead, and spirits. Cheep beer too if that's your fancy. Pre-COVID, I used to love the live music performances and can't wait to have them back again. There's a patio with both smoking and non-smoking areas, gender inclusive restrooms, dartboard, piano, loaner guitar and a shelf of books and board games. Normally by the looks of this place I would consider it a dive bar, which I have not been opposed to eating at dive bars in the past. Some times they have the best food I have found. It is just I was scared to show up here because of the location. Well when this covid 19 hit, we were just getting back to town, had a long day, stopped by my guys work which we happen to drive by here to get home he suggested we phone in an order. He has had their food many times, and liked it. He has told me about it. I was just too scared. He ordered the bangers, and mash. I decided on the Irish stew. The food certainly didn't disappoint, and I would go back again. It is definitely comfort food. My guy has been here before the Covid 19 to watch some bands play. I had fun here with my boyfriend on Thursday night. However the Guinness was terrible. And the fish and chips was a mixed bag. The chips were very good, flavorful! Some of the best fries I've probably had in a long time but the fish was very tiny. One was so flat it reminded me more of deli sliced meat than fish. The tarter sauce was very delicious given the unbalance of the meal I would guess they were low on stock of ingredients, fish. I feel being charged full price was wrong and saw photo of the fish and chips here that confirmed I got more like half portions. My friend organized a group of 10+ people to attend Dragmageddon at Old Nick's for their Cancerbuster fundraiser in October. We were excited to support the cause and got there somewhat early to secure a table (since there were a decent amount of us) and get drinks beforehand. I had never been to the bar even through I have lived in Eugene for 10 years but upon seeing the ambiance and hearing about the female owner's personal story, I was more enthused to support this business in the future. Please note we were a group of 40+ age professionals spending a decent amount on food and drinks. We had been there for an hour or so when the show started. After about 20 mins, the doorman came over to my friend (our organizer) and asked to see her phone. He heard she was taking photos of the performers- she wasn't. She allowed him to access and go through her phone. Pretty intrusive. He seemed satisfied and walked away. A few minutes later he returned to tell us all to settle up and get out with no explanation. We had not been rowdy, disruptive or disrespectful. We quickly collected our things, paid our tabs and left. It was weird. None of us will be back. read more

Alcohol selection is too small to order any cocktails to speak of, no cocktail menus even available. No rum visible. Not more than 3 bottles of mainstay alcohols on the wall and less than 10 mixer alcoholics (e.g schnapps, etc). There wasn't even the makings for a white Russian. Most home bars with a barkeeps' book of drinks is better stocked. Based on business volume I'd stay away from any taps, they don't look cold enough and the beer is likely going bad before it's all served. Stick with bottles here. Ordering their special "cocktail" off the board which was a vodka strawberry lemonade resulted in a splash of HDR in some obviously rotten lemonade. One sip and a no finish on the drink. Food was better but I was scared to eat it after how bad the drink was. I ate it and while under seasoned it was pretty decent bar food and clearly made in-house. Thankfully I didn't get sick from the food. The vibe is definitely not for the ladies. Lots of 60's/70's posters/pictures on the wall. Dark. Dirty. Despite the high quality food and the friendly barkeep I would not go back again since I like mixed drinks and a full bar. read more

I love this pub. Visit their website and learn about the owner :) wonderful story. The pub is decorated like an Irish pub and offers food and drink. They often have live music or comedians. The patrons are always pleasant and the wait staff is top notch. This is a place you can come and feel safe and welcome so long as you make others feel the same. They have a no no nonsense way with any bad behavior like racism, sexism, and many other -isms. The pricing is fair and the food was made to perfection. read more

I have visited this bar a couple times now and they have very good reubens. They actually make their own corned beef and slice it up for their reubens. Delicious. The staff is for most part very professional and helpful. My last visit they extremely busy and running out of items on their menu. They were literally out of everything on a Friday night with a booked show. Out of Coke, out of French fries, out of onions rings, out of most liquors behind the bar amount other things. And to boot an attitude of complete indifference about it. I used to frequent this place regularly. After this evening I will not be returning.
