I had a very upsetting experience at Max's Tavern. I was suddenly escorted out without being given any explanation, despite repeatedly asking what I had done wrong. What made the situation worse was that staff members tried to grab my wrist and put their hands on me while removing me, which made me feel extremely uncomfortable and unsafe. I understand businesses have the right to refuse service, but the lack of communication and the physical handling were completely unprofessional and unnecessary. No one should be treated this way, especially without being told why. I will not be returning and would caution others about the way situations like this are handled here. read more

In my day it was called "Robinson's" and I stopped in for at least one 75-cent beer every day, usually entering on the alley side. Whether from 13th or the alley, it wouldn't have been neighborly to simply walk by. Mr. Robinson's first name was Max, and regulars indeed knew him as Max. On Google Maps if you search for "Robinson's" it still takes you instantly to Max's -- whether that's its current official name or not I don't know. The whole enterprise was much more modest in those days -- no outdoor seating area or anything like that, and food offerings minimal -- free popcorn was excellent, though. I must say I'm delighted to see it still here, and thriving. I've learned that Max himself passed away, but I really appreciated him back then. read more

Max's Tavern is the prettiest girl in town, but she's got syphilis. Ward and Kim have created a great atmosphere and found themselves some superb bartenders. But you do you if you are considering going in there or not. If you do, maybe consider carrying some protection and keep your purse tight under your arm. There's tons of surveillance but it ain't there to help YOU. Don't try and jest with any regulars or you might find the situation to be very earnest very quickly. Don't try to talk to the owners or manager about it. My advice is that it's best to not make any eye contact and just walk away. It could be a five star bar if they ever clear out the street rats that the management mistakenly calls college students; probably just due to their age. But the trend is not being a friend right now. This bar will likely be two star before four and one star before five. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this place was a huge disappointment. The service was incredibly slow, even though the bar wasn't that busy, and the staff seemed uninterested and unwelcoming. The drinks were watered down and overpriced, and honestly just awful. The atmosphere felt chaotic rather than lively, and it was hard to enjoy my time with how disorganized everything was. Overall, not worth the time or money. I will not be coming back. Don't recommend. Not to add the security or bouncers or whatever, are more there to shun you away instead of welcome you in. read more

Great place for some cheap grub and drinks! This place has a nice friendly college town tavern feel to it which is perfect since they are in Eugene. They offer lots of greasy type foods (tots, popcorn, chips, etc) to soak up all the drinking you are about to do. We had the infamous Gummy Bear shot that my daughter said we had to try. It was sweet and sour, just like most gummy bears and wasn't my type of drink so I had a few sips and my daughter got to finish it. They do a great job keeping you fed with the aforementioned grub. We had the chips and queso, a basket of tots and the complimentary popcorn (freshly popped). I'm told there's an outdoor area out back that is nice as well. Great ambiance!! Great beer selection! Service was fast, bartender was lovely. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because when we sat at the bar in front of the dishwasher the stank sour sewer smell wafted into my nostrils. My spouse also smelt it & stated there's mold under the baOoaf it stunk!!! We moved to the booth behind us and then periodically would get drafts of the sewer mold smell as people walked by the bar. I probably will come Back bc it's so cute in here and a hidden gem. I hope they fix the stinky sewer smell tho read more

service is negligent unless this one bartender is working (but i haven't seen him in years although admittedly i avoid this bar when i can). prices are abominably high, cocktails weak (understandably so with the clientele), and their beer selection is really not so good. everyone always seems to be in a state of panic as the crowds of inconsiderate college kids barrel in at all hours of the evening, crowding the bar like pelicans and leaving the bartenders in a sort of permanent state of shell-shock. i used to love this place when it still clung onto being a hole-in-the-wall but now every time i go, it just feels unnatural to be there as someone who likes to chill and have a nice time read more

I want to start off by saying I've been a loyal customer and patron of Max's Tavern since the night I turned 21 last year. I have always loved coming here, always recommend it and never have had an issue. That is, until about two weeks ago. I recently got a new ID (Colorado) on account of my old drivers' license becoming expired. I have used my new, government issued ID at other bars and establishments with no issues whatsoever. My friend and I walked in on a slow weekday afternoon and were greeted by a bartender at the bar. We gave her our IDs (my Colorado and my friend's passport) which were then quickly verified via light and machine. We went outside to the back of the establishment to grab a table and start ordering some drinks. This is when we were approached by an older woman. She very sternly requested that she examine both of our IDs a second time, despite having already been seated at a table. I gave her mine and she held it for at least a minute, touching it and looking at it very intensely. Then, she said, "Yeah. I'm having a real hard time believing this one." Shocked, I insisted that the ID was real. I also presented her with a second form of ID, my military ID. She was still very skeptical and finally, begrudgingly, took my friend and I's order. We were there for an hour and a half and only once did a waitress come to our table to provide us service. Seated next to us was a large group of rowdy boys who were seemingly getting nonstop service. I was finally able to flag down a bartender to place a food order, to which she snappily responded that I needed to follow her inside despite taking orders at the table right in front of me. Trying to be cooperative, I followed her inside and she proceeded to leave me at the bar to take orders of everyone else who was sitting there. After a solid five minutes of trying to get served, I finally flagged down another bartender who was extremely rude and was upset when I did not know my table number (despite not working there and not having table numbers posted outside). My friend and I left quickly after eating our cold pretzel, feeling disappointed and alienated by a previous favorite spot on campus. As two women of color, we were even curious if this had anything to do with implicit bias. After looking at the other reviews on here, it seems that the staff needs proper training on how to properly identify out of state identification. I've also heard stories of over 21-year-old students getting their REAL IDs bent or taken from this establishment. Eugene is a college town; people come from all over and non-Oregon IDs should not be discriminated against simply because of staff's lack of knowledge and effort to verify. I understand that you have a job to do, but it's quite frustrating. I would like to mention that on the day I was there and received scrutiny on my REAL ID, I saw an acquaintance from high school who is actually underaged. I severely doubt they were asked to show alternate form of ID, and the entire experience was very upsetting. Go to Rennie's if you want better drinks and less hassle. read more

Great little spot in Eugene! Very intimate spot, but a great location to hang out at the bar or play some games with friends. It can get a little busy here but not never too bad. They have an entire back balcony that's outdoors with lights and heaters. Inside is a full bar with a tv you can watch. There are plenty of tables to sit at if you want to get more privacy. I hate to sound old and very graduated but I have no clue what happened to the fast bartenders... a few years ago the bartenders were extremely fast, friendly, and efficient and now they're beyond slow, rude, and the tip options are 20%, 25%, or 30%. One bartender charged $6 for well tequila and the other bartender charged $6.50? The gal with the long brunette hair and pink spandex shorts with a matching workout top on tonight--wear real clothes to work, communicate better to customers about where the line is to order/if there is a line, actually make the correct drinks that are ordered, work with some urgency, and just be more friendly... it's not that hard to be a decent bartender. This place has a lot of great memories associated with it and experiences like that can make it or break it for customers, especially alumni. No tip. read more

This bar is the best it gets in Eugene. Drinks are cheap and stiff, dogs are cute, Kim's a sweetie, and the popcorn's perfectly buttered. The bartender with glasses charged our group multiple times for the same drink. He also served someone who was blacked out but cut us off after a few drinks due to the behavior of others. I've been to Maxs multiple times. I've had a great time and the staff have been very nice. When trying to get in this past weekend, the bouncer took my id and now I'm in the mf line for the DMV to try to renwew my ID. According to other reviews, this seems to be a common issue with this place, but the staff is really bad at verifying IDs. I was visiting from out of state and it took two employees to conclude that a very real, federal driver's license, was fake. They were hesitant to scan the back, because it "hardly works," and even when it scanned accurately, they wouldn't accept it, because it "looked too suspicious." I understand that there are precautions that must be taken, but we watched this happen again with someone from our own party that was of age and neither of us possess a fake. This ID made it through TSA this morning and if they would've taken it falsely, it would have been prevented from returning home. The ID checking expertise needs to be fixed along with the attitude problem, as they were more concerned about being right than resolving the issue. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would. We showed up early so we could get a table for the night. Less than an hour into our stay after getting three rounds of drinks for five people they made us leave our table. It was extremely rude and horrible customer service. Never once have I been to a bar and then been made to leave my table after spending almost $50. After being made to leave I tried to call and they would answer the phone and then hang up on me. If you want me to do something, there are a few ways you can increase your odds of getting on my good side: offer me unlimited refills of Diet Coke, encourage hot ladies to pretend to be interested in what I have to say. Or you can do what New Max's Tavern did -- you can give me a bottomless bowl of peanuts and I will be unable to stop myself from consuming them until there is physically no more room in my stomach. Max's has a few other good features -- they have a good selection of beers and, though all prices seem incredibly low to me because I live in New York, I'm assured by locals that they're indeed good for Eugene as well. I don't think the nachos (natch hoes) were particularly great, and I didn't get any of the infamous popcorn. But the vibe was good and the lack of frat-types certainly made for a not-in-college feel in a decidedly college town. * - If you sit in the front booth in the winter, keep an eye out for the space heater. My absolute favorite bar in Eugene!! Other than the busy nights they have a $2-5 cover this place is amazing. If you get there early enough they have a live band that sets up before the rush that always sounds pretty decent for what you would expect at a college bar. The aesthetic of this place is amazing, they have stain-glass lamps all over the walls, booths, dart boards, and pretty much all the necessities other than a pool table. Fun fact about this place is that the bar in the Simpsons was actually created to look like max's because it was the creator of the Simpsons favorite bar in Eugene. read more
