I just now pulled up at the Flying Squirrel at 1:30 pm. They are supposed to be open until 2:30 am. I arrived on my little minibike that resembles a motorcycle. The bartender met me at the door before I was able to enter and told me that they are done for the day but I could come back tomorrow. As there are customers sitting in the outside area with tables drinking their drinks and other people inside. I guess they don't care for people on minibikes and are a discriminative business. The girl bartending Saturday nights will try to rip you off. She is very sweet but will take advantage of you if your drunk when breaking change. I handed her a 20 and got 10 back. I gave her a 5 dollar tip to be kind and then realized I only had 5 dollars. When I confronted her she freaked out and yelled throughout the bar. This is easily one of the best bars in town. I dropped in today for lunch and despite it being busy the bartender (who was the only staff member outside of the kitchen) was amazing. There were some Karen type customers in who were overly demanding and expecting table service. She served them with the same positivity and cheer as she did with everyone else. read more

If you are looking for the best dive bar in Eugene look no further. The Flying Squirrel is the best of the best. I am a proud customer of this bar. Service is great, people are great, overall great environment. The servers are amazing and very nice unlike some other bars in the south Eugene area. Drinks are solid, good price and taste even better. Don't get me started on the food, the buddies and I got multiple items and every one of them was amazing. Went there for lunch for the first time. The good was the waitress was very friendly and the service and food were good. The bad was the booth was covered in dog hair. Also some of the condiment bottles had no top on and had severe crust build up on them. Would probably go back if they fixed the dog hair problem. read more

The bar itself, on the inside, is nice. The food is good, but it's expensive (fifteen-dollars for a small chicken breast, a small waffle and a tin of syrup is mind-boggling). Sometimes they won't make you a drink saying they don't have the ingredients, without even looking, and it's right behind them and it's obvious they just don't want to make it. One lady has a "tramp stamp" and seems to take pride in it but all I think when I see it is "Zero hygiene and doesn't care about getting you sick". It's a "woke" place and that's pretty much the case with every non-chain restaurant in Eugene. Better off drinking at a place like Applebee's or just going out of town. The food is always good here even though it's a bar. A straight up, video lottery - with a smoking patio, last - call bar. To be fair, I frequent it because of proximity, I don't know that I would go out of my way to go there if it wasn't in my neighborhood. The staff is always friendly. They have daily drink specials. On the weekends they offer a brunch menu, otherwise it's pretty typical bar fare. Burgers and sandwiches. It has a welcoming atmosphere when the weather is gloomy outside. They open early and close late. There's a pool table, a dart board, a jukebox, video lottery, sports on the t.v.'s, and a couple of video games including Big Buck Hunter. Lol. They also have a smoking patio and allow your dogs on the patio. They don't make fancy drinks but I've ordered Manhattans there and the bartender did a great job. So.. I'm not sure if the squirrel is encouraging this, but on multiple occasions I'll be at the bar and multiple patrons will be served ahead of me. I'm a person of color. In every situation, I haven't even ordered a drink yet, so I doubt it's an intoxication thing. It's hard not to notice when I'm the only person of color in the bar and also the person in line that's being dismissed, but just thought I'd point this out. I do notice that it's not with all of the bartenders, but with three this happens on a regular enough basis where I'd rather go across town to grab a beer and a bit and be treated with a bit of respect and dignity. read more

WOW, had not been to this place in 8 months and I recall them having real ground beef grilled fat juicy burgers. Now they are serving over-cooked, thin "Frozen" patties, that tasted a bit like they just tossed it into the microwave oven very "overpriced;$12-$14"!! I could have gotten a better burger across the street at McDonald's for $6. The only reason they even get a one start was for the drinks and friendly server; she knows how to make her drinks (Tuesday night). So if you are there for the burgers you will be sadly disappointed. Oh and if you are there for the great booth seating?? Wishful thinking. I cut my legs from the holes of the cracked old seating. Ahh! Scarily rude bartenders! I will never come back here. The bar setting is what I would expect of any bar, but my experience here was very oddly terrible. I was here on a date, and when we walked in and sat down, the bartenders were yelling at a customer. It was so wild, I listened in. The customer asked for a double whiskey on the rocks. He ordered high shelf whiskey, and the bartender filled the glass to the brim with ice. He asked if she would strain it in a glass with fewer ice cubes, and said 'this isn't how you serve whiskey on the rocks'. Both bartenders began yelling and said their authority couldn't be questioned in their own bar, and that he was smug. It got so heated, they told the customer to leave and not come back. He had even ordered 2 orders of food, and was so frustrated he left. After the altercation was over, my friend and I went up to the bar. The bar had a few patrons, but wasn't full. Neither bartender would make eye contact with us, which after a while felt uncomfortable. I tried to wave, and the male bartender asked the guy next to me, who he knew by name, if he wanted another drink. He said he was still thinking. The bartender waited for him to decide on his drink, and still didn't make eye contact with me, even though I said hey. The female bartender did the same thing at the other end of the bar. Probably 5 minutes after being at the bar, another girl came up at the very end, and the female bartender knew her by name and asked her drink order. I am blown away by the fact that the regulars are the only patrons treated nicely. I work in the service industry, and I understand what it's like to see your friends and regulars on the job, but they lost my service forever, and I have no doubt that they lost the whiskey guy's service forever too. I wanted to say something about it nicely to them, but my date convinced me not to haha! Which is why I'm writing this review (which I rarely do). Other reviews on yelp that have complained all mention the bad service :( The guy I'm seeing lives directly across from this bar, and I will always go the extra block to Mulligans, where people are much friendlier and the bartenders don't act like it's a privilege to have your drinks poured by them. read more

Squirrel was once our regular brunch joint, every weekend, without question. Now the open too late on weekends and today they aren't opening until 6pm. Not sure why they haven't been able to keep their stuff together, but it sucks to lose it. I mean, take my money, just open your door. I will say that since the guy bartender that was the weekend staple left or got fired, the new girl seems to be less responsible and on point. It's been a while since I have been here. We don't live near so I don't think of coming in. I like the hours that they serve food, and they do have good drinks. The food I have had has been really good. Nothing you would expect from a bar. The first time I came in I ordered a steak and it came stacked with mushrooms, and sautéed onions. I asked for blue cheese on that too. The salad that comes on the side is really good leafy greens. A few other times I have been here I ordered other items that were good too, but the most other memorable that you should get is the chicken and waffles! It's off the hook!!! No really, no joke, you will have people asking for bites, and then another, and then another, and then pretty soon they will regret what they ordered! So next time go with the steak, or I highly recommend the chicken and waffles! Very tasty! read more

Oh a big improvement over what's been at this location in the past! And they took away the purple interior and fake plants! I assume their signage will improve soon -- it's easy to miss and not apparent what it is from the black/white banner. I haven't seen any advertising either. We went on a Friday evening for a beer and dinner. The menu seemed a notch above regular old sports bar fare, but fairly priced. We got the po boy sandwich, reuben, waffle fries, and onion rings. Sandwiches were okay, but... GET THE ONION RINGS AND WAFFLE FRIES! They were excellent- best I've had in a long time. I would have been happy with just those. Service was a little strange -- one bartender manning the tables and bar in the whole place, but perhaps they're waiting to hire after more people hear about this place. Food came out in reasonable time, but we were the only ones eating. Love that it has pool tables and darts! Lots of large TVs for Timbers and sports watching. Why the cigarette machine? We came here because Turtles was closed for some reason. The Flying Squirrel is a newer place, (that used to be some other diner), I think. Annie's. Very cool - TVs with sports, good local drafts on tap, lots of games-pinball, pooltable. Place pretty empty for Saturday breakfast, but it's a bar-no kids. Bartender made us some spicy bloody mary's with Sriracha - maybe a little too hot, but great effort and good. We asked for SPICY ! My breakfast was a french toast type plate with eggs/bacon. French toast had no powdered sugar and she forgot to bring maple syrup. Was quick to bring out the syrup. No biggie (just incomplete). My friend ordered a 'dip' sandwich, with no Au Jus. She was happy to bring that out as well. Quality was good, it seemed though the bartender wasn't quite with it....but she was nice and gracious. I saw her changing channel for a customer, she even brought the cook out to do it. I thought that was very cool-accommodating of them. I saw the tap line up and ordered a beer, too. She wasn't accurate with the beer selection. I'd return and recommend. I had a good vibe and it's a great option on this stretch (if you can find it). Outside sign needs help. I gave it three stars because every time we have gone in there and a certain male bartender is working we have had terrible service and he has a horrible attitude. The flying squirrel is an awesome spot as long as you know what you're getting into. Is it the best place for a "nice night out" or "romantic date?" Of course not, it's a carpeted dive bar. Is it a great place for a good cheap drink and affordable delicious food? You bet it is. My partner and I go here for lunch sometimes- usually splitting their French dip. It's always delicious, brought out quickly, and more than enough food for us to split- making it a $4.50 lunch each! One server in particular, whose name I can never remember, is always extremely kind and helpful and constantly sporting a positive attitude. Not easy to do when you work in a bar.
