Starlight Lounge: Where Eugene's Secret Broadway Rejects Serenade You (And It's Weirdly Good) Gave the Starlight Lounge a whirl last Sunday for their karaoke night. Expectations were set somewhere between "drunken caterwauling" and "mildly painful nostalgia." Color me... surprised! Let's cut to the chase: the *talent* here. Eugene, who knew? Several performers weren't just "good for karaoke," they were legitimately, bafflingly excellent. Like, "should probably be charging admission or at least bothering Broadway agents" levels. One individual in particular possessed the kind of voice that makes you wonder why they're belting show tunes in a dimly lit Eugene bar on a Friday and not, you know, on a stage where people pay actual money. It was impressively non-awful. Actually, scratch that. It was great. Shockingly so. Drinks? Perfectly serviceable. Major points for the extensive non-alcoholic menu. They seemed genuinely willing to de-booze pretty much anything on request, which is handy if you're the designated listener to Eugene's hidden musical theatre gems. Staff were friendly enough, didn't seem phased by the slightly goth-adjacent vibe the place cultivates. Points for atmosphere. The singer's area wins for comfort - actual couches you can sink into while contemplating the life choices that led that phenomenal voice. The DJ deserves a medal. Actively prowling the darker corners of the bar, gently coercing the shy into public performance? Effective. Almost concerningly so. They offer food (didn't try it, smelled... present), and there are the obligatory video gambling machines for those who enjoy losing money slightly more efficiently. Now, the rating. 3+ stars.*** Why not higher? Look, it's a solid experience. Friendly, talented, comfortable, good drinks (alcoholic or not). But it's the Starlight Lounge, not the Met. Manage expectations. It's a pleasantly nice hidden gem, truly. Emphasis on gem but also on hidden and possibly on the faint scent of... well, I didn't try the women's restroom this time. That particular adventure, and its potential to swiftly terminate an evening "May or may" not determine if one needs to head home cause she's unable to use a disgusting toilet) is reserved for my next visit. A critical data point, one might say. Overall- Surprisingly excellent karaoke talent (seriously), good drinks (booze-free options aplenty), comfy vibe, proactive DJ. Minus points for existential questions raised by the talent pool's location and the looming bathroom inspection. **3+ stars. Good job, guys. Keep it up! P.S: it was ass FREE less the drinks etc... Advertise Themed Nights in "The Weekly": Run simple, recurring ads or event listings for specific karaoke nights (e.g., "Showtune Sundays," "80s Power Hour") in Eugene's free weekly paper - targets locals planning their week. 3. Leverage Social Media Snippets: Post short video clips (even just 15-30 seconds!) of your best singers (with permission!) on Instagram/Facebook; yes even facebook. Showcase the talent & vibe - proof beats description. 4. Promote Mocktails Specifically: Add a dedicated "Zero Proof Stars" section to your drink menu/online & mention it explicitly in ads. Cool downtown bar with a comfortable and relaxed vibe on the afternoon we strolled in - the smart and attentive bartender/mixologist made pleasantries with us all the while pouring my craft draft and mixing my girls drink a vodka and blueberries with lemon zest cocktail called an "Angel ". There's a small bar top with a about a dozen stools as you walk in straight ahead to your left. Along with a couple large open areas throughout to sit, lean, stand and congregate. Dark corners and low leather couches, again very comfortable and relaxed. A video gambling games area down the corridor, again spaced enough to allow multiple people to hang around, sit and socialize. Exceptionally good music was playing in the background the afternoon of our visit. This place is absolute trash and a joke. Apparently their workers have no clue what an EDL is and accused me of my ID being fake. I am almost 23 years old and have never once been accused of having a fake. I've been to Vegas, LA, Seattle, Portland, use it for flying and everything under the sun without ever once being denied access to a bar. I even pulled up a post on my Instagram from TWO YEARS AGO, my 21st birthday, that my MOTHER commented on and the woman still told me it looked fake. Get better and more knowledgeable staff. I came in with 2 regulars who know their staff by name and they both said they were appalled by how I was treated and are not going to return. Maybe don't have a freshly 21 year old "bouncing" at the door so you have someone with experience with real IDs so you can avoid inaccurately accusing possible paying patrons of having a fake. My husband and I are frequent visitors to Starlight. We especially love the events they have. They have a themed trivia night always in rotation with some sort of themed sing along. They also have a great little room in the back with a pool table that is very reasonably priced to rent out. We love their drink specials that change on the hour. My friend and I attended tonight for Disney trivia. We were sooo excited! The host wasn't great at explaining and annoying wiped out a question because some of the people asked? Not how trivia goes. Also in trivia you're not allowed to use your phones and the caddy "know it all group" in front of us used their phones the ENTIRE time. And guess what??? They fucking won first place. The Starlight is one of the most under-appreciated bar/lounges in Eugene, OR. Of course, most people are familiar with their fantastic happy hour specials, $3 patron shots (9:30 - 10:30) and $3 well drinks till 9 - midnight (roughly, don't quote me). But, with large welcoming couches, Starlight offers a warm and sophisticated, but still unpretentious, alternative in the downtown scene. The bartenders are always very friendly and are equally at home serving up a PBR or a fancy cocktail or martini (and without grumbling). Sure, the bathroom isn't always a gem, but, this is easily understandable: It's a bar, after all. For smokers, the large patio in the back is always accommodating and you can hear quality music via the outdoor speakers. Finally, for those who like pool, there is a pool room that can be rented by the hour at a very reasonable rate. Starlight isn't just for happy hour..... The Starlight opened its doors with the best crowd draw I've experienced. Ninkasi pints (4-5 varieties) for a dollar, and equally bargained patron shots. No happy hour. Just ~3 months of bliss while the promo lasted (That is bliss if you got there early enough to get trashed on A-grade micro brew for 7 bucks before the place sardine-canned.) They get a lot of credit from me for still charging only $2.00 for the Ninkasi pints during happy hour. That beats local bars by ~$1.50 on average. The pre-9:00pm scene is very quiet. Not a lot of traffic. There is covered seating in the back for maybe 16 people comfortably The inside has smelled like the bathrooms on more than one occasion, and it's not THAT kind of bar at all. It's very well furnished insde. Lot's of comfortable pockets that groups can post up in. Just has had a urinal-cake smell on a regular basis. Even on a weeknight during the summer this place gets packed. The people who come here to drink are lots of fun and totally weird. That's what I call a good time! Plenty of folks to chat with and enjoy some solid libations. There is a great variety of drinks and drink specials here. They have some unique drink concoctions that look like they rotate based on the bartender's mood. No matter what, the prices are good and the bartenders are quick. They take care of you and call it good. On both occasions that I stopped in the staff was really cool. I like that there is a lot of room for people to hang out. I moved out of the Eugene, OR area without ever once coming here for a good ole night of drinking. I came down for the weekend to hang out with my friend where she basically forced me into a Santa pub crawl (and by forced she said, hey you wanna do the pub crawl with me? And I said, sho thang! What time?) They had $2 shots of Patron so I had like five. So I am not sure how well I really remember the place. There is a chance that it was some seedy nasty place with vomit in the corner and I would really be none the wiser. But if I remember right, I thought this place was pretty comfortable. It was a tad crowded, but the overall atmosphere worked well enough. I got to thinking about why it is that I had never frequented this place before. Now I am realizing it's because the bar front is so non-descript. Apparently, I need neon light and strippers dancing in the windows to be able to tell a place is one that gets me drunk if I pay them. This is neither here nor there, really. I just wanted to say 'stripper' in a yelp review. I would recommend this place. It's really the only bar we went to during the whole pub crawl (and afterwards) that I really enjoyed. read more

Went to the Starlight last night 10:30pm, my first time there. Walking in, the place smells like sewage. the entire "lounge" stunk like a toilet. Yuck. NOT a good first impression. Guy at the door was friendly enough....Bartenders, not so much. I regret tipping the guy. I ordered a Tanq & Tonic...$5.50 for the weakest drink I've ever been served in Eugene. Not a smile, not a word from the bartender, just a crappy drink, and it wasn't even busy yet. There were 4 guys standing around behind the bar at that point. An hour later when the place got packed, there were only 2 bartenders. Typical lame Eugene service... open a place, fill it with Goodwill junk, staff it with people who don't like to work but expect tips just for being there, serve some garbage but charge for gold, and call it good. The drink specials make Starlight deserve these 4 stars, along with the interior set up. I do not recommend straying from the specials - 2$ patron shots and local microbrews after 9:30 make this bar a popular destination. The interior has couches and tables and chairs and bars, great for groups large and small. Plus, the bar does not seem claustrophobic even during the patron shot hour when college kids flock here. A decent pool table (5$/hr) and outdoor area add to the possibilities at Starlight. And a personal favorite: Sunday nights feature B-movies, cult classics and horror films all for your viewing and drinking pleasure. My biggest criticism, besides a seemingly inept staff when it comes to making good mixed drinks on a regular basis, is that this bar has no street appeal and no connection to the street. Contrast this with nearby Jamieson's which has a large outdoor area poised on a bustling corner in Eugene, Starlight hardly adds to the night-life/scene of the Eugene streets. This place is right next door to ECB, it has plenty of hang out area. The reason to come here though is the deals. They have 2.75 well drinks on Thursday from 9:30 - Midnight. I enjoyed the Oakshire Hippy Town Brown for $2.00 all night. That beer is just the old gnome beer they use to brew with a new name. There's nothing really special or magical about this place. I went in to this bar with my boyfriend and my boss, the moment we walked in the door together we were immediately discriminated against by the hostess. In total it was myself a gay man, my boyfriend, and my african American female boss. The hostess immediately started making discriminatory comments about our party saying things like faggot and nigger under her breath as she was checking IDs. Once we got to the bar the hostess in the heinous striped shirt kept giving a side eye to my boss, and told her that her tracks were showing (making fun of her natural hair which was totally out of pocket) she herself was white. I kind of laughed when I read the review that concluded Starlight is "upscale (and) classy." Starlight seems more like the place where if you accidentally took a patron home you'd end up with HPV. With that said, I'll be there from 9-10PM to enjoy $2 shots of Patrón. Happy Hour is from 4-7PM, with pretty good deals (i.e. $2 Caucasian made with Crater Lake Vodka). There are a lot of great things that I could say about this bar. The bartenders are great, the atmosphere is really nice, the place is clean and I've run into a lot of good people there. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because of their food. The only menu item that they have is a Hungry Man microwave dinner, and it costs $10! They do everything that they can to discourage you from ordering food at that bar, but you can order food from the Horsehead across the street, just like most of the bars around Barmuta ( for those of you who are not local, Bermuda is the center of Broadway where in one finds the most bars.) There are also some food carts, or if you just want to bring in food from someplace, you are always welcome to. This place is less pretentious than Jameson's, but more posh than the horse head. For starters and all of the trolls out there the Patron is 100% real all of the time. The $2 special is served in a 1oz shot glass which makes it possible to make the price doable. Also the Starlight technically serves food, TV dinners, which complies with the law (they are not alone, Jameson's and Luckey's do the same). This is the reason they allow all outside food in. The staff is more than knowledgeable about making quality drinks and the Starlight actually has fresh squeezed juices, mint, basil, and homemade sweet and sour which is not something you can say about most other bars. During the day the place is definitely more relaxed, more of a martini style lounge, but being in the "Barmuda Triangle" turns the Starlight into another packed 'turn and burn' college style hang-out at night, not unlike its neighbors. If you enjoy Duck games though and kick-off is after 4 PM (that's when they open) definitely check out their plush seating and HD projector. Another cool feature that no one else around offers is that they have a private pool room with a few amenities that is reasonably priced considering that you can rent a private space in a really crowded bar that has the room to host many friends comfortably. Overall don't let the atmosphere fool you, the Starlight is another bar on the block and you'll find it packed with the same crowd as the others, but they do offer the best specials and without question the best beer selection compared to anyone else within walking distance. The Starlight is a great place to bring a party and save a buck. read more

I've had a great experience here and a not that great experience so 3 stars seems fair for now. The first time I came in and the bartender was excellent. He chatted with us about whiskey options, had a friendly demeanor and took care of us as customers. Even when it got slammed an hour later he was still attentive and got my drinks taken care of. We ordered a panini that was overpriced but hey it tasted good and helped fill out stomachs. The second time I came here it was a slow night on a Tuesday. There was a group of women painting with headlamps on at a big table so I guess on different nights they have different groups who come in. Awesome! The bartender this visit was not so pleasant. She seemed like she was having a bad day and didn't want to be there at all. She was very short with us, said the bare minimum to get us our drinks and that was it. I couldn't even tell if she was talking to us since she barely looked at us. The drinks were weak and smaller than the other bartender had given us. Consistency matters and this was not consistent at all. From that experience I don't really want to come back but I like their couch area and it's central to downtown. Went in with a group of 6 on April 27 about 8:30 pm. The guy at the door was weird, kinda blocked our way to entering and asks if we had a reservation. I then asked if we needed one to get drinks? He said no but stood there still for a minute then just walked away. We went and sat at the bar that is by the bar. No one acknowledge us and it was NOT busy! After 6 minutes I asked the bartender girl if we needed to order at the bar. With a completely rude tone and facial expression she says yes and then turns away. We order and get our drinks. She collects money from all but one of us for whatever reason, but then comes to the table and tells us, rudely again, someone needs to pay for the drink. She is given a twenty and she then rolls her eyes and as she walking away says "you can get your change at the bar." The entire time we were there we were uncomfortable and felt like we shouldn't be there. I have never seen such a rude bartender!!! She definitely should not be in the service industry! We planned to have a couple of drink as we were waiting for more friends, but we finished one drink and left! We will never go back!! To the owner: If you want to make money maybe have a bartender and door person with a million times more personality. We went to the Barn Light instead! LOVED it! Nice bar it used to be Oregano's, and now it's well kinda a college kid hang out. I've been there a number of times and enjoyed the back smoking section. The drinks are solid, the staff inside are basically friendly but the door people are gruff. If you prefer a non-campy joint you'd be better off at the davis up the street, but for comfy couches dim lighting, free web access with cheap drinks, sleazy bar chicks I in short like it!
