What a great little diner. I arrived in town and had time to kill before my room was ready. So I looked around on Yelp for a suggestion that offered the "Yelp Cash Back". I found the Oasis diner. Looked and felt like a diner right out of the past. Long counter with red padded stools and plenty of booths. I was greeted by the nicest server. She asked how my day was and did it with a big smile. I ordered the club sandwich and a side of peas and carrots. The sandwich was very delicious and put together well. Plenty of meat and cheese, and the bacon was perfectly crisp. Veggies were hot and not over cooked. One thing that stood out to me, was after I was done and walking out, I was stopped by an older gentleman that I assume was either the owner or the manager. He asked me how everything was and how my day was going. Here is the thing.. I could tell he wasn't just asking to be professional, I could tell by his voice and tone that was was genuinely interested. You don't get that much anymore. It was nice. Was so excited to try this place, but unfortunately had a below average experience today. Place itself it really cute, like an old-school diner. I ordered soup (stuffed pepper) and salad (wedge) with side of rye toast, bf got soup (chili) and BLT combo. My soup was really tasty, but lukewarm. The chili was lukewarm as well, not served with cheese or onions, and tasted like out of a can. My 'side order' of toast was a HALF slice of bread, then cut into two quarters. ?! Plus it was soggy. Finally, the service was pretty bad - they weren't that busy and had plenty of waitstaff, but our server was never around. We heard the table behind us have to reorder two times because they didn't get what they ordered. The redeeming quality was the heavenly piece of peanut butter pie we got to share for dessert. Super duper DUPER dog-friendly, people! There is an outside dining area that is specifically dedicated to folks who bring their dogs. That is freaking amazing, in my opinion. Also, they bring your dogs biscuits and a bowl for water to enjoy while you dine. Who does this? That is awesome! Besides being one of the most pet-friendly restaurants in that area, I have had really good luck with their food and service lately. They seemed to have gotten over a lot of the bumps from their past and have become more consistent in both food and service. My favorite thing to eat here would be their strawberry and cream cheese stuffed French toast. I know it has a name on the menu, but it escapes me right now. It is delicious and refreshing, especially on a hot day. The only problem after eating it is that you won't want dessert. It's like a dessert in itself. What are you waiting for? Delicious food and super-friendly staff. We stuck with the highlighted items in the menu and were not disappointed. Philly Cheesesteak sandwich was awesome. Well-seasoned and loaded with meat, grilled onions and green peppers! Catfish basket came with a nice large (and thick) fillet. The fish was moist and flaky- best catfish ever. And then the pie...to die for. Got the blueberry peach, because they were sold out of the strawberry rhubarb, but again we were not disappointed. The filling was flavorful and not overly sweet. They were very very crowded on a Sunday afternoon. We waited about 15 minutes for a table outside, and the girls were working as hard as they could. Upon ordering we waited for probably 40 minutes for our food to arrive. Hubby had the whole hog platter and said it was good! I had the tenderloin platter with tots and it was equally as good. Very good ice cream in a cute original diner car that has been moved, updated and expanded. The food is barely ok, not great, but what you would expect from a diner. The signature pork loin is huge, thin, dry and salty. More batter coating than meat. The sad mixed veggies side dish had been simmering til it was flavorless mush, inedible. We we're seated alone in the back dining room surrounded by messy tables that were not bussed and a milkshake on the floor we had to step over. Cute, authentic diner with a super friendly staff- our server was a doll! This diner had a 50/60s feeling to it, like the ones I only saw on TV. When in Indiana, my partner told me one must also eat (besides the biscuit and gravy) the hand breaded pork loin sandwhich- the cut of the meat (not too thin, not too thick) was a good ratio to the amt of breading on it- maintained the crispy fried taste w the right amt of meat in each bite! I had a major sweet tooth craving, so I ordered the strawberry french toast stuffed with CREAM CHEESE. omg.. it just bursted in my mouth- so good and sweet! Memories, memories, memories! For years, in the 80's, my family use to visit The Diner, prior to the Oasis, and always enjoyed ourselves. My kids were small and loved to grab breakfast or dinner here. The Diner was shipped from Signac, NJ via railroad in 1954. Raymond Piercy bought the diner in '87 and closed down the Diner in 2008 due to health issues. Now with the move and enlargement, it's still fun to come here. The interior and exterior has been restored back to their original appearance. This location also offers nice patio seating close to the White Lick Trail. Convenient to stop off for a milk shake or grab a bite after hiking. The diner remains located on the Historic National Road and is the only diner on the National Road in Indiana and is only 1 of less than 5 historical diners to remain on US 40 from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. Indiana Landmarks listed the Diner on it's 10 Most Endangered Indiana Buildings list. The listing prompted the Town of Plainfield to conduct a feasibility study on relocating the Diner 4 miles west to the recently revitalized Town Center area. After 3 years of research, planning and construction, the Oasis Diner reopened in it's current location in November, 2014. The menu covers breakfast through dinner and you want leave hungry. Mountain View Diner Manufacturing company was established in New Jersey in the 30s and operated to the late 50s. They built and shipped diners around the country, including this particular unit, which was shipped by rail to Plainfield in 1954. It operated pretty much continuously since that time, except for a few years hiatus, a move and renovation. In all its splendor today, it dishes up great home made grub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as selling baked goods. I went for their signature dish, a pork tenderloin sandwich. While I cannot tell you the origin of the sandwich, I do know they are unique (mostly) to Iowa and Indiana, and consist of a pounded out boneless piece of pork, usually breaded and fried. It is served on a bun, most often with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Maybe a pickle chip or speak. I was a bit apprehensive about going out of my way to hit the Oasis, but after my meal, I realized I would drive hundreds of miles just to have the tenderloin again. It was absolutely perfect. The breading has a nice crunch, while the pork remains juicy and nicely seasoned. Hand cut fries were my side choice, and the house baked bun was fresh and substantial enough to hold the sandwich, even if one can't get it in their mouth! There are quite a few Mountain View diners still in operation around the US, including five in Indiana. I've driven quite a few of the major US original highways, like Route 66, and US 61, back and forth, top to bottom, but haven't spent much time on US 40, one of the original coast to coast roads, which is nicknamed "The National Road." Just by spending 20 miles on it the other day, I can tell I've missed a great trip that I will have to do in the future, lots of old time Americana and architecture on 40. Small booths, and a service counter with stools. Lots of stainless steel, just a feel of nostalgia. Very friendly staff, with a definite "local" feel. They have their own "handcrafted" soda lineup, and I opted for the butterscotch root beer. DELICIOUSLY DIFFERENT. With so many choices for a diner, I started off with an order of Disco Fries, which is the Midwest version of poutine. Absolutely amazing!! Very crispy, the bread for the sandwich was fresh and tasted almost home made.I added bacon which next time i will ask to be cooked a little longer, i have to have my bacon crispy. I had a great, and unexpected dining experience here! I was just passing through old town Plainfield on Main Street when I saw it, and was immediately taken back to childhood. It used to be a marker that we were close to arriving at our grandparents' house when driving west on US-40. I thought it was gone forever, but there it was. My daughter was as eager as I was to go inside since she had only seen these types of diners on television. She ordered the Beef Manhattan and I got the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich. We both ordered the sweet potato fries with caramel dipping sauce as sides. The HUGE Tenderloin was crisp on the outside, while tender on the inside and not at all greasy. The red onion, pickles, and tomatoes were fresh and vibrant looking. The bun was delicious and really added to the flavor...slightly eggy, slightly sweet, and fluffy. My only tiny complaint is with the mayo. I really appreciated that it was just the right amount...not gobbed on, but it was a bit overpowering with a little too much chunky fresh garlic. But I did enjoy the sandwich overall! The Manhattan was also very tasty. Fresh bread slices, plentiful delicious beef, real mashed potatoes, and a rich, flavorful brown gravy covering it. It was really tasty and filling. The sweet potato fries with caramel sauce...I was not expecting to like really, but another diner recommended it. My first bite was a surprise! It was crispy outside, but tender and sweet inside. The caramel sauce added a flavor that reminded me of a toasted marshmallow...perfect with a sweet potato. 1 order of sauce was plenty for two to share. Also, not at all greasy. We both loved it! I also really enjoyed the shop made cherry cola. And of course loved the decor. My eyes never rested for a moment. I had the pleasure of chatting with another diner after we arrived. She suggested our dinners as they were her favorites. She told me how the diner made their own flavored sodas, and that they also make their own bread. She suggested the addicting sweet potato fries and caramel sauce too. Thank you so much, kind stranger! The reason for the 4 vs. 5 star was that the staff was very disengaged, with no eye contact, and not very welcoming. If it weren't for the kind diner, I wouldn't have known about all the wonderful things to try. I was never asked if I wanted a refill. We definitely weren't treated badly, just indifferently. Don't listen to the negative reviews. This place has the best breaded tenderloin I have ever had, and as a native hoosier, I have had plenty. My God, you can even order it for breakfast smothered in sausage gravy! What's not to love. Burgers are very good, pies are home made, and the cinnimon roles are as big as your head. Don't miss this place just because someone else had a bad experience there, maybe they shouldn't go to a place like this for chicken salad on a croisant. This is a solid diner. We got seated right away in the back part. Next time I will know to ask for the front part. Our server was nice. She got our beverages to us right away. All the coals are made in house. I am not a cola fan but tried my daughters and it was pretty tasty. Our food came out in a timely manner. I had such a hard time deciding what to get Breakfast or dinner and I went for dinner. I was hoping I would have no regrets. My burger was delicious. Like super good! It was cooked to perfection and so filling. I have not had a burger that good in a very long time. My husband had the Rueben and there was not a speck left. He said it was delicious. My daughter had a hot dog and my other daughter had chicken fingers which were really great. I am not sure what they batter w but it was tasty. We did not go for any of the amazing pies that they had but I wish I would have went for a sticky bun that walked by. Had to give 4 stars because this place is definitely not what it used to be. The cheesy grits used to be one of my favorites to order, but they are just not the same. Anymore they come out barely warm and seem old. The pancakes, however, have always been and are still absolutely amazing. The warm bacon syrup is the perfect addition. I'd long hoped to visit the Oasis Diner in Plainfield, Indiana, a historical diner that as recently as 2010 was on Indiana Landmark's list of the state's most endangered historical landmarks. Known to be one of less than a half-dozen historical diners left on National Road, also known as U.S. 40 and Washington Street in Indy, the Oasis Diner has a retro look and feel that has been returned to it following the town of Plainfield's efforts to move the diner to a better location and restore it to having an interior and exterior faithful to its original condition. The restaurant re-opened in 2014 and has been one of my prime targets for a visit over the past couple years. As I was wheeling through Plainfield on a fund-raising event last week, myself and my road support person took some time to visit Oasis Diner for a meal early in the lunch period. While the restaurant can get quite busy, we arrived at a good time and Oasis was about half full. The Oasis Diner serves breakfast all day and lunch/dinner starting at 11am. The breakfast menu largely consists of several specialty themed options and a handful of build-your-own options. The lunch menu largely consists of the types of foods you'd expect from a rather traditional diner including burgers, a tenderloin that fellow Yelper and tenderloin blogger Rick G. rated 5-stars, a handful of other sandwiches and sides and even smaller handful of lighter/healthier alternatives. While Oasis is designed to be faithful to its 1950's roots, the move also allowed for integration of accessibility including a very nice concrete ramp into the diner. While sitting in the front, which is mostly booths, would be more challenging for a wheelchair, there are ample options for a wheelchair and I appreciated the hostess's awareness that the obvious table right next to the door and bathroom area might not be the most pleasant. So, we were seated elsewhere. As I was actively wheeling and had a couple more miles to go, I avoided the tenderloin sandwich fearing it might not agree with me. I opted for a Quaker Burger with a side of fries along with my usual unsweetened iced tea. My lunch companion ordered chicken tenders. What can I say? I was disappointed. The burger was severely under-cooked and despite appearing to be a solid slab of beef lacked anything resembling flavor. Since I was at a traditional diner, I'd have expected a burger to be much more satisfying. The fries, resembling steak n' shake, were solid enough but not worth the premium pricing that goes with the historical Oasis Diner. My iced tea was solid, though my server, who appeared to be newer, never returned to offer a refill - if you know me, you know this is a cardinal sin in my world. This was especially true given it was a day where I'd been wheeling the trails of Hendricks County. The service, as noted, was simply off the mark. She was friendly when present, but was slower and never returned for the always desired refill. The atmosphere was extremely loud, something that is always a turn off for me, but much of that was due to an overly happy group of senior adults sitting in the corner who seemed to find seeing their own shadow hilarious. There were things that went right here, especially early on, and if I could I'd likely lean toward a 3.5 star rating. That said, I can't and there's simply no way this was a 4-star experience. In fact, the food was probably closer to a two considering the entire meal ran over $22. I appreciated the opportunity to finally visit Oasis, but based on this visit it's not a place I'll feel the need to rush back to anytime soon. Instead, it's more like a place where I'm saying "I checked that one off my list." It was a decent meal, but not nearly the type of destination visit I hoped it would be.
