I really liked open kitchen. The food was delicious, and had a very unique flavor. Vibe was nice, and service was very good. I got the breakfast chicken. It was pretty delicious!! The chicken was cooked very well, the eggs were yummy, and the gravy was good too. The flavors/ spices were really unique, which made this place even better. Combining above average food with unique flavors was super fun. I really liked the actual restaurant as well. It felt very industrial and nice. The interior was a bit smaller than I expected, but it made the place feel intimate. I went for lunch - I bet open kitchen's vibe is even better for dinner. Overall I'd go back here. I'm so impressed at the chef's ability to bring out so much flavor in everything from a potato to toast. If you like flavor, than you will love this place! We walked in on a Saturday at 4 pm, and were immediately greeted and seated. There is limited seating, but they also have a bar area. Our server gave great menu recommendations. We started with the Buffalo Brussels Sprouts. The Brussels were so flavorful and delicious! They were coated with a unique batter. The buffalo Brussels are definitely a new fave appetizer. We also ordered the bbq bacon burger and the smothered chicken entrees. The burger is possibly the best burger that I've had at a restaurant. I didn't prefer the well done fries, but our server gladly replaced the fries. I also tasted the smothered chicken and it was also very delicious. There weren't busy when we arrived, but We did wait a while for our food. But the food was worth the wait. What I loved most about this restaurant is that my food was hot and so flavorful. My husband and I tried out Open Kitchen last weekend for the first time! The staff were all very nice. We had multiple people tell us thank you for coming in. I had a beer, which I thought they had a good wide selection of those and cocktails. For dinner, I had the 10 Street Chicken Sandwich and fries. They had the option to have different seasonings on the fries, but I stuck with the original. I thought the normal fries had a great flavor! The chicken sandwich was just good. I have no real complaints about it, but it seemed like it could use something else to blow me away. All in all, I thought the food was good and will return to try more of the menu! Solid restaurant. We were greeted right when we walked in the door, and seated quickly. She made sure it was okay if we sat in a high top- I appreciate her thinking of others and their specific abilities. The place was well maintained on the inside. It was a little cold for my liking, but my wife wasn't complaining so it was probably just me (but maybe wear a long sleeve if you are going in the winter like we did). I ordered the Blue Firework cocktail, and the smothered chicken with Brocolli and whipped potatoes for my meal. The cocktail was great- the champagne in it wasn't too overpowering and had great balance of taste...and I appreciated the sugar rim on it. The smothered chicken was good. The Brocolli was cooked thoroughly, and I could tell was finished on the grill to give it a nice char. The potatoes had great taste and were smooth. The smothered chicken was good, but not amazing. My two complaints about it: the breading on it was a little soggy for my liking (not super crispy and seemed to fall off the chicken) and there was a certain flavor about it that really overwhelmed everything out (I couldn't put my finger on what that flavor was). This restaurant is well deserving of its 5 star rating it is carrying. They have an adequate private parking lot, a couple of picnic tables just off the parking lot to eat and a decent sized dining area. They have a full bar with seating and a couple of televisions above the bar. They do not have any printed menus, which is becoming a trend in the restaurant industry. You have to use your phone and a QR code to pull up the menu. My server was awesome. She was friendly, attentive and helpful. She kept my drink full and even offered to change the television to a show of my choice. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was there for a late lunch and was surprisingly the only person in there. I actually though that they were closed. For lunch they serve burgers, salads, seafood, po boys, and a kids menu. I got the cajun salmon with a side of fries and broccoli. It took about 10 minutes for them to prepare my meal. It was made fresh and was very tasty. It was honestly one of those meals that I was sad to see it come to an end. It was so good. It all was perfectly seasoned and cooked perfectly. I highly, highly recommend it. This is a nice local joint that you will find just outside of the UIndy campus. it is minority owned, with high quality, tasty food and excellent service. Here's my first Yelp review of 2023! This is actually from about a month or so ago before Open Kitchen temporarily closed. So technically this experience happened in 2022. They are apparently in the process of planning a move, so my review is based on the original location. I visited once, with my dad and husband, for brunch. I had been interested in checking this restaurant out for a while, of course, I also love supporting local Black- owned businesses and restaurants. Their IG page is also very convincing as the food looks incredible. We seated ourselves when we entered around 12 noon, it was a small neighborhood spot. There was one small tv and noise level was overall quiet and easy to hear each other. I recommend visiting with a few friends as seating was very limited, this maybe ok for a group of 3-4 max. Or if you are into the solo dolo thing, need alone time, me time? This is a great spot to bring your book, or maybe journal and get some thoughts off your mind. Just chill. After seating ourselves, the co-owner and chef, I believe of the restaurant, came over and hands us menus. She also gave recommendations. They offer to pour a glass of water and bring you another beverage based on what you select. This time we all went with waters and no extra drinks. For food, I ordered the very popular Cinnamon Crunch French Toast, and the men both chose sandwiches. The Monte Cristo and a Fried Chicken Sandwich. My order was true breakfast, I like my eggs scrambled, and I enjoyed some pork sausage Pattie's. There are about 5 hearty slices of the French toast that comes with my order so more than my small appetite can finish. (I suffer from your eye's bigger than your stomach syndrome) I also was given a nice syrup to dip my food in, I can't remember if it was true maple or the thickness, sorry. If you can get a little to-go box, it will make a great second brunch for the next morning. Everyone's meals were filling and satisfying. It did take a little time to get the food but that allows you more time to sit and chat. Enjoy your company and getting away from the hustle and noise. I don't like to feel rushed anyway. When I'm eating, I like to take my time. Overall good food. I'm looking forward to when Open Kitchen returns at their new location. Would highly recommend a larger dining space for more patrons. We hardly come to the south side of Indy but looks like we'll be coming back again. I'm skeptical of pictures from the restaurant on Yelp, but my honey garlic chicken looked just like the picture. To the point- Location- It's in an up and coming area, Garfield Park. It's about a 15 minutes from downtown. Inside- There are about four square tables and each has four chairs. There seemed to be two more round tables towards the back, but were not in use. Then, there's a bar area to the left of the entrance. Basic dining no frills. Service- The waitress seemed nice and greeted us when we arrived. I think she was the only one waitressing and asked us to give her a minute to get us seated. Food- They were out of vegetables, but we did enjoy the food we ordered. I ordered the Shrimp kabobs and a salad. I liked the seasoning. The food was hot and made to order. However, we waited almost an hour to get our food. The group before us said they waited 1 hour and 20 minutes. They only had two other tables and they were either eating or had already ordered. As good as the food was, I don't think I'll be eating here again. There are just too many restaurants to pick from to wait this long for food. If you don't mind an hour wait time to eat, then give it a try. read more

The biggest drawback after 2 visits is low staffing which leads to long wait times for food. The wait time for tables and getting in your order is little. The food is outstanding in terms of price and flavors. I was so impressed with their menu, new location, and kind service. You might miss this black building with not much signage just diagonal from UIndy. They have free parking in their lot and serve up big flavors inside. Do not sleep on this gem of a restaurant! Went there for brunch this morning with no preconceived notions, and was completely blown out of the water. In our brunch party of four, everyone loved their meal. I selected the cinnamon toast crunch French toast with the bourbon caramel syrup, and I can say with no hesitation that it is literally the best French toast I've ever had in my life. The location is in a bit of a rough area, but it's worth it. Parking lot is private, but be careful going over the train tracks just a few hundred feet away. On a Sunday morning, you may want to make reservations if you have a larger party to ensure you get a table. Eboni was our server and she was wonderful. This is a small, family business offering great hospitality and excellent food. We were greeted at the door and well taken care of. Our first visit was for dinner. We started with the THC fries (truffle/herb/cheese). They were hand-cut and absolutely delicious and I'm still thinking about them! We enjoyed our appetizer with the strawberry spiked lemonade which was also delicious. For our entrees, several in our group ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with different proteins - shrimp, chicken and crab. We also ordered the chicken scallopini. The portions are huge. Everyone was thrilled with their meals and we all took home a hefty portion of leftovers. Because this is a small business and they are scratch cooking, expect to wait a bit for your food. We didn't mind but we were offered a free dessert because of the wait. Our server brought a bread pudding for the table to share. OH MY WORD. Don't miss this! Homemade bread pudding with homemade bourbon caramel sauce (to die for!), homemade whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. It easily fed the 4 of us. One of our out of town guests said that he may be convinced to fly to Indianapolis just for the bread pudding! We went back for breakfast and it was equally amazing as dinner. Food: wowowow the shrimp po boy was so good! Not normally one for fried shrimp but the bread was perfectly dense, the lettuce fresh and the perfect ratio of sauce to sandwich! Yum! The OKR salad was lovely and had extremely fresh tasting produce (where are they sourcing these veggies?!). The only downside was that they were out of olives. House strawberry vinaigrette was well balanced and delicious! Service - great! Our servers checked in on us regularly and my glass was never empty. Ambience- I like the industrial bar vibe and the open concept seating area had a nice flow. Plenty of parking available though I wouldn't mind if they cut down on parking in favour of a small patio! Location was a bit odd, Indianapolis needs to build sidewalks and stop developing a city for cars. We had to take a 2 min Uber to the restaurant because there were literally no side walks in the area and OKR is along a busy street. The good: every.damn.thing! The bad: not.a damn.thing! The biscuits and gravy was awesome. A little herby, creamy and flavorful. Biscuit fluffy and just crusty enough to stand up to the thick and rich gravy. Scrambled eggs were perfectly folded and seasoned expertly. Bacon was crispy (I prefer chewy- but the taste was on point). Sausage was juicy with a cast-iron seared crust that was great! French toast was thick and chewy but still melted in my mouth. The syrup had a great herby touch that also complimented the perfectly cooked and juicy breakfast chicken. There are about 8 little tables for dine in and the carry out and curbside was also busy. The owner Toni has a great personality, great food suggestions, and should be so proud of she and her husband's amazing creations! (She was also hostess, waitress, and busser!) Go check them out. The biscuit itself was sooooo soft and fluffy. It was HUGE. The entire thing has a good flavor but my favorite part is definitely the biscuit. My roommate ordered a house-made biscuit with chicken breast and egg. He agreed that the biscuit is delicious and super soft. He described the chicken breast as being sweet and spicy but really good. He also ordered the breakfast tots with bacon. First off, the portion is quite a lot, so you'll definitely have leftovers. It was really savory with tots, scrambled eggs, melty cheese, sour cream, and cilantro. Definitely a heavy meal for breakfast but delicious nonetheless. They've got a great variety on their menu without having to resort to a dozen variations on a single idea. I ordered breakfast and got the crab avocado benedict. Very unique but delicious and a perfect portion size. Toast said it would take about 40 minutes to prepare but it was ready for me when I pulled in 10 minutes early. One person's item came out almost 10 minutes before our other's, the order was wrong (I got fried eggs instead of scrambled in the breakfast bowl) and overall it took almost an hour for a 2 person order.
