This restaurant has a great history and the shrimp are quite good but the good stops there. We were there just yesterday for a birthday celebration and one of our party ordered the fried oysters. They were absolutely the worst I have ever seen served and when mentioned to the employee her response was, " thanks I'll let them know". The coleslaw is really good but the other sides are mediocre at best. Also this establishment only takes cash for payment? I wouldn't have a big problem with that but when you use the ATM they conveniently have provided just outside you are hit with a $3 ATM charge AND A $3 CHARGE FROM O'STEENS!!!! After two separate recommendations for this place we decided it would be our first stop for dinner for our ST. Augustine vacation. The wait was 1 1/2 hours. Normally with a 4 and 6 yr old we don't wait that long but we were even told by people standing in line it was worth the wait. What a mistake. Very disappointed. The fried shrimp that they are know for was nothing to write home about. They were not crunchy but heavily breaded and oily. We also got fried oysters which were the worst I've ever had. Heavily brewed and and no taste. The kids got chicken tenders which were frozen pulled from a box. Not worth the wait or the high price tag. The service was good, fast and friendly and very good about refilling our drinks. I think a chain restaurant does better and I do t frequent those often at all. read more

Small place so if you don't mind sitting at the counter you can get in and out quicker. If you have a wait you can shop in the antique mall and they will call you on the pa system. We drive all the way from Gainesville to eat their fried shrimp. It's the best I've had! They have delicious sides to go along with their entrees as well. The sweet potato casserole and squash casserole are fantastic (they usually sell out of the squash mid-day though) Pole beans great too. The shrimp are butterflied and fried in a light tasty batter that is not the greasy kind. There can be a very long wait most of the time. We went around 1:45 last Saturday, and there was a 2 hour wait! There is always a group of people lining both sides of the place waiting to get in. In past experience, my friends & I would get there right as the doors opened at 11 AM for an early lunch, bypass most of the crowd, and then hit the beach or outlets. It makes for a great motorcycle ride from Gville too! (Btw, you can shop at the adjacent funky antique shop while you wait and your name will be called over intercom when it's your turn to 'step up to the plate.' I read some reviews and they were fantastic, people raved about the fried shrimp and since I was craving fried shrimp, we went for it. I'm so glad we did! It was delicious. No that word does not begin to cover it. I ordered the 9 piece fried shrimp with green beans and Sweet Potato Casserole. The green beans were ok. I've had better and worse. But the sweet potato casserole was off the charts amazing. It was so good, I ate my boyfriends too. He ordered the seafood platter and loved every bit of it. I tried his fried fish and it was yum. Listen, I don't like to wait...No one likes to wait right? And wait while your hungry?!? Forget that....BUT I have an exception to that rule. If there is a line out the door or the wait is 20 or more minutes I get all shaky and run like a frightened greyhound. You have to wait here and it's worth it. If you are near St. Aug. come here for a meal you will not forget. Three rules here-1. bring your appetite. 2. bring your cash cause they don't take cards. And finally 3. Tell the really nice hostess at the window you are gonna go to the pub and walk your ass to the English pub and wait. You will be glad you did. Our wait was a hour and a half which isn't unusual there. We sat at a the pub and had a pint while the time passed and so did almost everyone else. Every so often the phone would ring and the bartender would call out a name. They have a system going and it works. Once called you shuffle over to the place and are escorted to your table. Menu is small and mostly fried seafood is the attraction here. All of the food we got was fresh and delicious. We had the fried clams and they were not rubbery frozen foodservice clams, very good. We also each got the fried shrimp the locals rave about. They are right and this is the best fried shrimp of your lifetime. Portions are huge and prices are great.
