Platter for two
Matt M.

We had fun eating at Schooners this time. Half of the fun was from our server, Jojo who made suggestions on the menu and said to trust her, because "Fat girls love food". I did not think she was fat, but she was so funny and engaging. Here is my take on the food: Ranch - homemade and delicious, ask for some on the side no matter what you get. Blue Cheese - not homemade, but decent. Tarter - they do it right. Roumelaud - I like their roumelaud. Salad - fresh, tasty but fairly plain. New England Clam Chowder - award winning and it is pretty terrific, Onion Rings - large, crispy Black Eyed Peas - just not my think, they were too soft. Broccoli Casserole - always good, do good that sometimes they sell out. But this time, it was awful, not edible so it got sent back. Cheese Grits - cheesy and gritty Hush Puppy - sweet finish, delightful. Fried Oysters - nice and crispy. Fried Shrimp - I think this is the way to go, they do such a good job of lightly frying the shrimp, and the coating is subtle so give it a try.

Shrimp, collard greens, baked potato, and hush puppies (my daughter threw an extra one on my plate - comes with 2.)

A Place We Always Come Back To Schooner's is a St. Augustine staple. But it's also more than that - it's a place that holds a piece of my heart and some very sweet memories. My Grandma, Bobbie Russell, passed away in June, and this was her favorite place. When family came to town from Georgia, South Carolina, or Arkansas, she took them to Schooner's. If anyone wanted to treat Grandma to her favorite shrimp dinner, you picked her up and brought her here. Tonight wasn't a planned stop, but it was exactly what my heart needed. The shrimp -- perfect, as always. You start with your choice of salad or coleslaw, then get two sides and hushpuppies. I ordered collard greens and a baked potato. Honestly, the portions are great for the price -- I was full just from my starter salad and shrimp and brought my potato, hushpuppies, and collards home for lunch tomorrow . We finished the night sharing a piece of carrot cake. The atmosphere was poppin'. This place was BUSY. We had just driven through St. Augustine's Nights of Lights and thought everyone was downtown , so I was genuinely surprised at how packed Schooner's was. Even so, the staff was on point and excellent. We waited about 20 minutes for the first available seating and ended up on the porch with a live musician -- an extra treat. He wasn't too loud (which I appreciated), so we could still enjoy conversation. Parking deserves a mention because even with crowds waiting outside and filling the large lobby, we had no issue. We parked in the dirt lot behind the restaurant without trouble. Party of three -- and yes, all of us ordered the shrimp dinners. I'm telling you, this place is consistent. Same shrimp, same quality, every time. Best shrimp in the state, hands down. The fried shrimp dinner (9 shrimp, salad, two sides, and hushpuppies) was $16.99, which feels like a steal these days. This is a family-friendly, kid-friendly, group-friendly place with a happy, energetic vibe. It's not trying to be low-lighting or romantic date-night material -- but it's perfect for all the other times. Bonus: it's north of downtown, away from the worst of the Nights of Lights chaos and traffic. One last thing I'll note -- while we were waiting, I saw multiple people picking up large takeout orders (bags full of to-go containers), which says a lot about how loved this place is. For me, it's more than a restaurant. It's comfort, tradition, and a place full of memories -- and I'm grateful it still feels exactly the same.

The food is great and all fresh I love the sides service is great and pretty fast. The ambiance is pretty casual but clean and nice.

Seafood platter with the spinach surprise.

We drove in from Virginia and we were starving so we stopped here. Everyone was super friendly and the place was clean. The starter salad was GREAT and that was the beginning and end of greatness. We had the fried seafood platter. I had beets which were out of the can. They highly recommended the spinach side which seemed to be canned spinach with noodles... no thanks. The scallops were good. The rest of the meal lacked seasoning. I wish we had checked Yelp before going because honestly I would have preferred McDonalds more.

Captain's Platter For 2. Includes 2 coleslaws plus 4 individual sides. Enough for 3 people, possibly 4.

Great service from Savannah. Closer to a 4 for overall experience but food was a little lacking. Fries were perfectly crispy but they use a generic ketchup which is a downer. We really liked their hush puppies as they were light and fluffy. Beyond that, food is fairly mid and I agree with others about being under-seasoned. They rely on sauces for flavor which I guess is ok as long as you understand that going in. Makes it easier to be neutral to accommodate different people's tastebuds. Our platter for 2 was enough for 3 and quite possibly 4. It included 2 portions of fish, about 6 each of shrimp, scallops, and oysters along with clam strips. It also included 2 coleslaws OR 2 salads plus 4 individual sides. All that for $35!! Portions are huge and a great value overall.

Seafood Broiled Trio

First visit and it was tasty. First the service was impeccable. Friendly from the moment you walked in. Lovely waitress. Had the broiled fish trio. Mahi mahi was perfection. Scallops were good. I like more of a sear. Shrimp was watery and squishy...not pleasing to the palate. Coleslaw and red potato sides were quite yummy. Hush puppies were just not good. Couldn't really pinpoint what was wrong. Overall a delightful seafood experience. Ambiance was clean and respectful. You'll need a jacket as the AC works extremely well.

This is a sign you need fried shrimp and pink sauce.

We've been coming to Schooner's for decades. As prices go up this has become one of the most affordable places to dine in St. Augustine. The early bird deal on 12 fried shrimp that ends at 6 p.m. is a bargain and it's our favorite item on the menu. For this visit three of us had that, a fourth the blackened shrimp and the fifth chicken strips. Service was prompt and attentive. The fried shrimp was great as always, chicken strips extra crispy as requested and the blackened shrimp I sampled was so good I might get it next time. Who am I kidding? I will always get the fried shrimp.

There was no one at hostess stand because system was down and they were having troubles which I felt bad for the hostess who seemed stressed on obviously a busy night. They were out of both of the entrees we wanted, which was unfortunate but I ended up getting the catch beurre blanc and it was delicious. I ordered a sangria but our drinks took a very long time to come out, after our appetizer (crab, an heirloom tomato bruschetta which was yummy and more filling than regular bruschetta!) Overall, the food was really good and waitress was nice, but water was never refilled and everything took a really long time to come out. Would love to try it again on a regular night and hopefully they have the entrees we wanted to try:)

Catch 27 - St. Augustine, FL…read more Came to St. Augustine with a group and Catch 27 was suggested for dinner. Great choice. I checked the Yelp reviews ahead of time and it definitely lived up to them. People in our group started with drinks and everyone at the table seemed happy with what they ordered. I had the red wine braised beef brisket for my main and it was excellent, very tender and full of flavor. My friend Damon next to me had the red snapper and I tried some of that too. Also very good. Someone else at the table had the Rockefeller crusted snapper and that looked and tasted great as well. For appetizers, I had the shaved pear and blue cheese salad. It was really good and honestly enough for two people to share as an appetizer. People at the table also ordered the Devils on Horseback and liked them. I do not eat bacon, but they were happy with that dish. The deviled eggs with southern fried oysters looked really good, and I had the smoked salmon spread, which was very good too. I also saw the shrimp and grits come out for someone else and that dish looked excellent. For dessert, I had the sticky toffee pudding and it was a strong finish to the meal. Others at the table ordered the seasonal crème brûlée, which was chocolate that night. It looked great and everyone who had it said it was very good. Sunny was our waitress and she did an exceptional job. Attentive, kind, and on top of everything the whole night. In my mind this is about a 4.7 star experience, and I am rounding it up to a full 5 stars. Catch 27 is a great choice in St. Augustine.

She was very kind and accommodating as we were looking for a specific table location on the patio. I would also like to shout out our server, Tom, who was also friendly. Unfortunately, service is only half of the experience. We started with a dozen raw oysters that were just not fresh. They were stuck to the shell and tasted very old. Our entrees were the beet salad and tuna poke bowl, which were both pretty good, but my wife complained about the abundance of candied nuts in the beet salad. The entertainment was meh. The manager was constantly petting the house kitty cat and then handling food, drinks and shaking customer hands. Seemed odd. Their sushi chef recently passed away so nothing related to sushi on the menu was available made to order. The place just needs proper leadership and could be a much more enjoyable experience in a town with few options on the water.

The combination of imaginative cocktails, exceptional food, and a unique atmosphere makes every visit memorable. The cocktail program is outstanding. We enjoy trying a variety of their exotic and inventive drinks, and they never disappoint. The flavors are bold, creative, and unlike anything you'll find at a typical restaurant bar. The Yellow Submarine cocktail is quite possibly the best drink I have ever consumed. Made with curry-infused Bermuda black rum, lime, ginger, and Asian five-spice brown sugar syrup, it sounded unusual on paper but came together beautifully. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered four of them that evening, something I rarely do. That was three years ago, and despite returning several times since then, I have never seen it on the menu again. The food is equally impressive. Two years ago, I ordered the Skillet Roasted New York Strip served with Yukon Gold potato-anna, roasted asparagus and spring onions, watercress, and black truffle hollandaise. To this day, it remains one of the top five restaurant meals I have ever eaten. Every component on the plate was exceptional. The steak was perfectly prepared, the crispy potato galette was irresistible, and the black truffle hollandaise elevated the entire dish to another level. It was the kind of meal that stays with you long after the plate is cleared. I would gladly drive 300 miles just to eat it again. Most recently, I had the wild mushroom bisque, and it was the best soup I have ever consumed. Rich, creamy, buttery, intensely mushroomy, and perfectly balanced, it was everything a mushroom soup should be. The addition of crispy pickled onions and crème fraîche added texture and contrast that made an already outstanding soup even better. My wife and I enjoyed it so much that we returned the very next day hoping to order it again, only to discover it had already rotated off the menu. My only complaint about The Ice Plant is that some of their greatest creations seem to disappear as quickly as they arrive. While I appreciate the constantly evolving menu and understand that seasonal changes are part of what makes the restaurant special, there are certain items that deserve a permanent home. The Yellow Submarine cocktail, the wild mushroom bisque, and the Skillet Roasted New York Strip with black truffle hollandaise are three of the finest things I have experienced there. The fact that I can vividly remember one of these items from three years ago and another from two years ago says everything. Great restaurants serve good food. Truly special restaurants create dishes and drinks that stay with you for years. The Ice Plant has done that for me more than once, and that is why we continue to return whenever we visit St. Augustine.

When I arrived with my pregnant wife and my service dog, he asked somewhat curtly if it was a service dog. It was a pretty cold and uncomfortable welcome. That said, the restaurant is absolutely charming. I really loved the interior ambiance--it's cozy, well-decorated, and has a very pleasant vibe. The food was extremely delicious. We ordered the Half Pound Ice Plant Burger and it was juicy, fresh, and packed with flavor. You could taste the quality in every single bite--the meat was perfect, the ingredients fresh, and everything very well balanced. Definitely one of the best burgers I've had recently. Despite the initial host experience, I would return without hesitation for the food and the atmosphere. Highly recommended, but they could improve the initial greeting.
