With a large EV vehicle, a Plug-in hybrid, and constant energy rate increases, we knew we had to go solar ASAP. After quite a bit of research and discussions with different solar companies to learn about the differences of buying, leasing, or other options, I spoke with the team at NorthStar Solar. They were very friendly, professional, and straightforward about their offering. They asked about other companies we had spoken with and provided multiple estimates based on their recommendation as well as comparable builds to the estimates we received from other companies. From initial call to completion was ~6 weeks, and the actual build was done in less than 3 days. We were quoted 3-4 months with other companies along with a lot of extra equipment and construction that seemed unnecessary. The fact that they are local to the Tri-Valley, and diversified as a roofing company, also was a big selling point. Their ongoing system monitoring and ability to come out quick if something goes wrong down the line was our main decision for going with them. Having received a pitch from a large company offering a 'power purchase agreement' style lease where we are effectively being charged an equipment rental rate that is "cheaper than PG&E rates" but not enough to offset expected sun production on our roof ultimately seemed too opaque of a business offering to see any real cost savings. Plus, being able to capitalize on the federal credits of owning a system vs. leasing with a big company covered about 1/3 of the total cost to buy. Definitely recommend NorthStar Solar from start to finish!

My wife and I have been researching installing solar panels and a backup battery system for our house for a while due to the desire to mitigate against rolling power outages as well as ever-increasing PG&E rate increases. I researched and contacted a few California-based solar installation companies that can do solar+battery+new roof installation (our existing roof was 20 years old and I wanted to take the opportunity to replace it) under a single contract. The companies I talked to either don't do roofs or subcontract them to another roofing company. On top of that, getting a straight answer on how many solar panels I need as well as the type of battery system I'm interested in was difficult and frustrating. Luckily, a friend who had solar panels installed on his house in San Bruno, recommended I check out Northstar Solar Inc which is based in Danville. From initial contact with Northstar to post-installation, the team at Northstar was top-notch in communication, product knowledge, project management, and installation. We ended up selecting an 8.2KW capacity solar installation and a 10kW battery backup system from Enphase. For the roof, we went with Landmark Solaris tile roofing. Once the configuration and contract were agreed to and signed, Northstar started scheduling roof pre-inspection and filing all the necessary permits and paperwork needed to do the installation. Along the way, the project team informed me of the status of permits (including PG&E NEM application), installation, and the payment schedule for each milestone. We started the conversation with Northstar in mid-August and signed the contract in September. I told Northstar I wanted to have everything completed before year's end so I could get the full tax credit for 2023. They assured me they would complete the project before year's end and they totally delivered. Roofing installation was about 5 days and actual solar+battery installation and configuration took 3 days (they had to wait for the roof installation to complete and "dry" before they could do the solar installation). The installation team was super professional, cleaned up each day, and did a superb job in mounting the panels and batteries. Many thanks to Sean, Daniel, Ryan, and the Northstar team for making this installation so painless. I highly recommend anyone looking at installing solar/battery/re-roofing with a single local company that is professional and price competitive to talk to Northstar. And if you do go with @northstar Solar Inc, please use my name for the referral.

Northstar Solar helped us get into NEM2 in April 2023, when there were just days left to apply for that program and other solar companies were refusing to guarantee that they would get the application submitted in time. This was an indicator of their superior planning ability. When we had the work done in 2024, Northstar completed everything very efficiently and with great communication. We are very happy with the installation of our solar panels and all the peripherals that went into the system. We would highly recommend Northstar to anyone in the Bay Area who is looking at installing a solar power generation system. We worked with Sean Rodrigues (510.862.7404) to start the system sizing process.

Battery and solar inverter

The team at Northstar was exceptional at every step. I was eager to find a single contractor to replace my roof and install a new solar setup and a battery. They delivered as I hoped and were able to come in with a super competitive offer even compared to other separate bids for roof and solar. The installation teams were super clean, punctual, did great work and made sure I was aware of the plan and progress all throughout the journey. All the staff were so hard working- I was so impressed by their commitment. My guy Pierce who quoted everything out said they would really excel in customer service too and he was SO RIGHT. When/if I move, I'll definitely be a repeat customer.

I can't say enough good things about Carlos Gomez from Sunlight Electri-Cal Solutions…read more I've been working on a non-standard solar setup using an EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra X and EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 3, and finding a contractor who truly understood this type of system was incredibly difficult. I spoke with many contractors, and almost all of them sent salespeople who gave generic answers or tried to push cookie-cutter solutions that clearly didn't fit my setup. Carlos was completely different. From the moment he arrived, it was clear he wasn't a salesperson -- he's an engineer, and it shows. He took the time to deeply understand my system, reviewed actual spec sheets on the spot, and immediately identified issues that other contractors completely missed. Multiple companies told me Hyundai panels would work fine. Carlos checked the amperage limits, applied proper safety margin calculations, and clearly explained why those panels would not work with my EcoFlow system -- saving me from a costly mistake. He also walked me through: Proper panel selection within voltage and amperage limits Safe string configurations and series wiring How to maximize roof space while staying within code Permitting requirements I hadn't been told about before On top of that, Carlos identified critical code and safety requirements that no one else mentioned: Bollards required in the garage to protect battery units Correct battery placement to maintain required clearance from doors and entrances Heat detector requirements for battery installations in a garage These are all things that would have caused inspection failures later -- and Carlos caught them immediately. He spent well over an hour with me, climbed onto my roof to check for obstructions, inspected battery placement, reviewed wiring paths, and answered every question in detail without ever rushing me. What truly sealed the deal was how efficient and transparent the pricing process was. Carlos was able to turn around a detailed quote very quickly, and when I received it, I was honestly surprised -- it was a significant amount lower than every other quote I received, even though his evaluation was by far the most thorough. Given everything: His technical expertise The level of detail and care The ability to integrate with my existing system The fast turnaround And the much better pricing Choosing Sunlight Electri-Cal Solutions was a complete no-brainer. Carlos is knowledgeable, meticulous, honest, and genuinely passionate about doing things the right way. After meeting him, I completely understand why this company has such strong Yelp reviews. If you're in the Bay Area and need electrical or solar work done the right way, especially for a non-standard or custom system, I highly recommend Carlos and the team at Sunlight Electri-Cal Solutions.

Sarah is the nicest and great worker has been my only contact and she is not a technician. I requested a pre site visit to review the job and draw up plans and I was told it is billable. So no pre site visit was ever completed. So removal went well. Install is a disaster. We are now 5 days in and I have no working system. I had 2 inverters and wanted to go to one. I was told the Tesla inverter could do that. Today the team removed my 2 old inverters and mounted the Tesla inverter. They then went to the panels and there was no Tesla MCI to connect to the panels. 18 of my panels might not be compatible with the Tesla inverter. 1, I do not have a building permit. This work is being performed while it is in process. 2. There is no install plan. Every time the installers came I had to be project manager. They did not know I was going to 1 inverter. 3. Even when the inverter was in the truck the team did not know I am going to one inverter. 4. My old inverters have been removed and are not usable. By the time the solar panels were installed in late 2025, we had signed three contracts with them due to a series of delays dealing with all the idiosyncrasies of our old house. Through it all, our sales contact, Jason Coolman, was patient and knowledgeably answer our questions as they came up. Everyone at Solar Technologies that we worked with was great. They made sure that things went smoothly and on time. We are thrilled with our new solar system. Solar Technologies has been a Bay Area Sunshares vendor for many years and a lot of other reviewers sound like they're as happy as we are. This year (2024) I decided that my electric bill was just too much, I was going to get solar eventually, and the longer I put it off the more it would cost me overall. I liked that they didn't harass me. Once some folks get your number they just wont stop calling. Diablo didn't bug me back in 2020 and they were not really trying the hard sale this time either. I called them, had a brief discussion about what I was looking for, and scheduled a visit. I didn't know much about solar installations, so I spoke with a friend who was familiar with these things. He told me what to look out for in terms of equipment. After I got the quote, the folks at Diablo were very helpful answering questions along these lines. Again just providing information, not trying to sell me. Diablo handled everything and scheduled a time to do the install. Overall it took about 3 days. Two days for most of the hardware and then a day about a week later to deal with the mess in my breaker box from some previous work done by another company. Then they handled everything with PG&E and about a month later everything was cleared on PG&Es end. This delay was due to PG&E processing paperwork. Overall it's working well. Just see the before and after photos below. Not of my roof but of my electric consumption. You can see some before and after values as well as how the system performed on a particularly hot day.

My parents purchased solar from a HORRIBLE company that sounds a lot like 'SunFun'. After they passed away, and the house was sold...we were STILL making the monthly payments for over a year!!! That SunFun organization REFUSED to transfer the solar to the new homeowner, and eventually stopped taking or acknowledging our calls. It wasn't until we had to threaten the new homeowner with a lawsuit that SunFun finally transferred ownership. Due to this, we could not trust any of these solar companies...that is, until Kevin Bedard came to our home, and explained everything in great detail to my husband and I. He took the time to hear about our concerns, and he showed us how he truly cared. That same week, we spoke to two other families who shared their positive experiences about Ambrose Solar that made us feel that we would be in great hands. We had FINALLY FOUND A PEACE about getting solar on our home; KNOWING we would be in good hands, and we were ALL IN. It's been six months now, and we are beyond pleased with our solar panels, and the two Tesla batteries we have purchased. We are true fans, who have NOTHING but RAVE REVIEWS for this company. They appear to have done a great job on a small to moderate roof repair from a leaking easement on my home. They were very responsive from the Yelp inquiry and sent out someone a day or two later who seemed experienced and forthright (Dario). He was willing to walk me through what he was seeing on the roof and also took photos clearly showing the issue. While he was up there, I brought two other minor issues I'd been meaning to take care of and he was happy to take photos and add them to the quote (cracked vent seal and small area of entry into the attic). They put together a formal quote and proposal within a few days and I was able to talk with one of the owners (Jason) on the phone to discuss the questions I had. Price seemed fair --- bay area expensive, but worth not doing the work myself for this situation. I'd look to them first for any future work.
