We recently had a 9.2kW, Powerwall 3 and expansion battery installed. The team at Northstar was always available over email, text, or phone call and worked through a couple of redesigns. With a large EV vehicle, a Plug-in hybrid, and constant energy rate increases, we knew we had to go solar ASAP. After quite a bit of research and discussions with different solar companies to learn about the differences of buying, leasing, or other options, I spoke with the team at NorthStar Solar. They were very friendly, professional, and straightforward about their offering. They asked about other companies we had spoken with and provided multiple estimates based on their recommendation as well as comparable builds to the estimates we received from other companies. From initial call to completion was ~6 weeks, and the actual build was done in less than 3 days. We were quoted 3-4 months with other companies along with a lot of extra equipment and construction that seemed unnecessary. The fact that they are local to the Tri-Valley, and diversified as a roofing company, also was a big selling point. Their ongoing system monitoring and ability to come out quick if something goes wrong down the line was our main decision for going with them. Having received a pitch from a large company offering a 'power purchase agreement' style lease where we are effectively being charged an equipment rental rate that is "cheaper than PG&E rates" but not enough to offset expected sun production on our roof ultimately seemed too opaque of a business offering to see any real cost savings. Plus, being able to capitalize on the federal credits of owning a system vs. leasing with a big company covered about 1/3 of the total cost to buy. We got both our roof and solar done with this company, going from a cement tile roof to shingles. We were told by the company that our tiles were too old to install panels on and that they didn't do cement tile installation, and so this contributed to us making this change. Unfortunately the cost ended up being more than we originally signed for due to them having to install a second sub panel, the communication was spotty where it was difficult to get a response or know when the contractors would be showing up each day, and we are now in a situation where there's a large gap in the flashing of our roof and chimney that will have to pay even more for to get it fixed. If we had originally known all of this, we likely would have gone with another company who had experience with cement tiles. The team who worked on the roof was very nice. End to end, it took a few months to get completed. read more

I signed my contract with Northstar Solar after evaluating proposals from 3 other vendors. They had the best pricing with the best yelp ratings and reviews, so we signed a contract with them in early November hoping the work would be done by end of year. After signing the contract, communication was lacking with multiple follow-ups. I was unclear on the timing for next steps and when the project would start. Eventually, they got back to me and communicated that they were backed up through the end of year. In mid-February they were ready to start the project. From that point on, the communication was great and the on-site team did an amazing job with the installation. They were organized, neat and did a great job painting to mask all the piping to match the colors of the house. Overall, the pricing and quality of work was great. They definitely need to work on their client communications to keep them up-to-date on the project timing once the contract is signed. Other than that issue, we are extremely happy with the level of service we received from Northstar Solar once the project started and through to the post-installation questions. I received an estimate and followed up with a few questions via email--no response. I then tried contacting them through text, email, and phone over the next two days, but still nothing. Their main phone line even states they don't answer calls and prefer to be contacted by text only, which makes communication difficult. It took multiple attempts over several days to finally get a reply. The responsiveness is unreliable. That said, once I was finally able to get in touch, he was knowledgeable and provided helpful information. read more

It takes a lot to cause me to write a bad review but this company deserves it and more! I honestly think their good reviews are fake! I chose them based on their great reviews and couldn't be more disappointed. I contacted them back in September and was pushed to signed a contract with them in October and was promised by Sean that the work will be done by the end of December so I can get my solar credit in my taxes. After I signed the contract, they disappeared on me. I had to text Sean so many times and he said he will check with the Contractor and never got back to me. . Finally after many text, they told me they have other work because of the rains and they're taking care of people. I took a loan specifically for that walk and started paying the loan back, including the interest, but the walk was never done. Finally, after asking to talk to the owner, the owner called me back in the end of December and told me nobody should've promised me anything in terms of timeline.. he also said that I am lucky because the shingles that I wanted were finally in stock( nobody and never mentioned something like that) and after three months of waiting, suddenly the owner told me that they will not remove the old pool pipes for my roof because they are not plumbers and this is a job that every roofer does and they promised to do it when they came and did the estimate. That was the last straw and I decided to cancel the contact with them.. nobody even tried to call me and apologize about all the hustle they've been putting me through. My wife and I have been researching installing solar panels and a backup battery system for our house for a while due to the desire to mitigate against rolling power outages as well as ever-increasing PG&E rate increases. I researched and contacted a few California-based solar installation companies that can do solar+battery+new roof installation (our existing roof was 20 years old and I wanted to take the opportunity to replace it) under a single contract. The companies I talked to either don't do roofs or subcontract them to another roofing company. On top of that, getting a straight answer on how many solar panels I need as well as the type of battery system I'm interested in was difficult and frustrating. Luckily, a friend who had solar panels installed on his house in San Bruno, recommended I check out Northstar Solar Inc which is based in Danville. From initial contact with Northstar to post-installation, the team at Northstar was top-notch in communication, product knowledge, project management, and installation. We ended up selecting an 8.2KW capacity solar installation and a 10kW battery backup system from Enphase. For the roof, we went with Landmark Solaris tile roofing. Once the configuration and contract were agreed to and signed, Northstar started scheduling roof pre-inspection and filing all the necessary permits and paperwork needed to do the installation. Along the way, the project team informed me of the status of permits (including PG&E NEM application), installation, and the payment schedule for each milestone. We started the conversation with Northstar in mid-August and signed the contract in September. I told Northstar I wanted to have everything completed before year's end so I could get the full tax credit for 2023. They assured me they would complete the project before year's end and they totally delivered. Roofing installation was about 5 days and actual solar+battery installation and configuration took 3 days (they had to wait for the roof installation to complete and "dry" before they could do the solar installation). The installation team was super professional, cleaned up each day, and did a superb job in mounting the panels and batteries. Didn't oversell me and let me choose what I thought was best and said we could always add more (for a bit more vs if we installed it the first time) at a later time if our system didn't produce enough and/or if we decided to purchase an EV vehicle. I've dealt with other solar companies before and few things: - go with a local company..support a local biz...esp if you are local they won't gauge you with prices.. - go with a company that does roofing in addition to solar...they go hand in hand. - Jason responds on text and pretty prompt..so customer service was really great even when my original sales person left abruptly..Jason and Ryan picked up all the moving pieces and made things seamless. I replaced my HVAC system with a heat pump in the Spring which prompted me to investigate installing solar. I submitted an inquiry on the NorthStar website and got a response the same day. Patrick was very patient in answering all my questions and was quite thorough in reviewing his proposal. Their pricing is also very competitive. I especially liked the fact that they recommended a larger capacity battery then their competitors at a better price. I signed the contract in late June and my system was installed in mid-July. They provided everything I needed to get HOA approval. Jason, the project manager, was responsive and kept me informed via texts and emails. The installation crew arrived promptly at 8am on the day of the install. The whole project took 1.5 days. They cleaned up and left no mess. Explained to me what is going to happen next (waiting for PG&E and final inspection). I got my permit to operate late August. I have no complaints at all. The whole thing was a breeze. My system seems to be working well so far. They didn't try to sell me more than what I would need. I particularly like the fact that they are a local family-owned company. Northstar Solar helped us get into NEM2 in April 2023, when there were just days left to apply for that program and other solar companies were refusing to guarantee that they would get the application submitted in time. This was an indicator of their superior planning ability. When we had the work done in 2024, Northstar completed everything very efficiently and with great communication. We are very happy with the installation of our solar panels and all the peripherals that went into the system. I recently had NorthStar Solar remove 28 solar panels for a roofing job, and then reinstall them once the roof was completed. They were professional and competent from start to finish. Too many companies over-commit and under-deliver. That was never the case with anyone from NorthStar Solar. Every touch point with their business was professional, and they always followed through on their commitments. I was very concerned about them reinstalling my solar panels once my roof job was completed, due to the summer's high temps and the potential damage that could be done to the new shingles. Dan, the owner, made sure that the crew started early in the morning and quit for the day before the temps got to the point where the roof could sustain damage. The panels were installed flawlessly and on-time. Northstar Solar has a fantastic team, from the sales staff to the installation crew and office management; they all work seamlessly together. I hired them to install ten solar panels along with a Tesla Powerwall. The installation took place on October 14, 2024. After that, of course, PG&E had to give their approval. Since the solar system went live after October 14, 2024, I haven't experienced any issues, but it does seem that the power isn't quite sufficient. This might be due to the weather getting cooler, or perhaps my roof needs more panels. Since I haven't used it for a full month yet, I will keep a close watch and discuss with Northstar how to optimize the system. At the beginning, the salesperson, Sean Rodrigues, reached out to me. He demonstrated such professionalism that I felt confident the company would provide top-level service. Jason Ramos and Rodrigo Angulo then brought the installation team to complete the job; they arrived on time, worked methodically, and maintained an excellent attitude. They patiently answered all my questions. I would also like to highlight Danielle Rhoda, the office administrator, who has always been available for communication and replies to my emails within one business day. They are good people, a great team, and an excellent company. To be honest, since the installation was just under a month ago, I'm not yet sure what my bills will be or what might happen later. I shopped around with several providers and you definitely want to go with a local company as opposed to a nationwide chain because you get much better service and support. NorthStar was reasonably priced compared to others and I liked that they also have a background in roofing. The main factor why I went with them is because their estimated time to completion was significantly shorter than the other vendors. I've had my solar system in place for about 10 months now and it has been working great. Overall their system estimate was relatively close to the actual output and I would recommend them to anyone in their service area looking for a solar provider. read more

Worked with Pierce Wahlrich at this company. Bait and switch behaviors like the other Yelper stated. Fake and patronizing. Spent over an hour on the phone and I was excited as they seemed knowledgeable and explained the better types of batteries. Pierce had a whole presentation and though it sounded rehearsed, I felt I was in great hands. I asked Pierce specifically if I did not get solar could they still replace my roof. "Of course we do roofing as well" But I really wanted solar too. I crunched the numbers and I could not justify solar. I was going to let them replace my roof, excited to work with them. Pierce chased texted and emailed to check in and offered me a FREE roof inspection. I signed the DocuSign agreement for the roof inspection and it seems whoever Pierce consulted with in the company told him to withdraw yet. I'm guessing it's because they wanted that solar money. Pierce then became patronizing and fake protective and kept offering to go over other quotes with me from other companies. I found a good roofer to replace my roof and should I explore solar in the future, I would probably not consider NorthStar Solar. read more

After checking with several solar installers, NorthStar was the winner. Initial process for a quote was easy. After following up with a phone call, where they actually simplified the system I was looking for, they scored their first points. Most other companies installs in my neighborhood took 2-3 days with the same size. Score again! We contacted this company for a roof replacement estimate, because of its great reviews, and proximity to our home. After speaking with Patrick, the sales person, a site visit was scheduled. A person (Josue) came out, measured our roof, discussed many details, and took that information back to Patrick for a quote for roof replacement and the removal and replacing of our solar panels. After some negotiation, Patrick sent us a proposal (in writing) that we agreed upon, except for a few detail issues. After several phone and email communications, he said he was ready to sent us a DocuSign contract. It arrived within an hour, and we were unable to open it, saying, "it is under review by the sender", Northstar. Of course we were confused, since only an hour before, Patrick advised us it was being emailed for us to sign. Since we were unable to open it, we attempted to call both Patrick and their office manager Dani, to clarify, and to confirm that certain details we had agreed upon, were included. Dani said she'd reach out to Patrick and he'd contact us. Not only did he not return our calls, but when we finally made contact with him, he did a bait and switch on the agreed upon price (which we had discussed at length over a 10 day period). In the meantime, since we were committing to the price he had sent us in writing, we cancelled other roof companies we had planned to interview. His explanation was that his boss/owner, Ryan said we'd have to pay an additional $7700 for the job, explaining that he (Patrick) & Ryan had a "misunderstanding" between them. When we questioned the unprofessional & confusing behavior on their part, no further explanation was given. We asked Patrick to honor the agreed upon price originally given, or to at least discuss some type of compromise. That is the last contact we've had with them. We recommend NO ONE DO BUSINESS WITH THEM IN THE FUTURE, as you cannot trust the quote given or their word. The total lack of professionalism, integrity and honesty was shocking to us. They installed Panasonic panels to my home, they were extremely professional, very clean, very knowledgeable, even the first person who talk to you,"supposed to be sales person" is the owner, very technical, we had forum level discussions to find the best solution. -My solar journey started at November 2021, I decided to go with Tesla solar since the price was cheap and I was not knowledgeable about their panel quality and technology. They did all the permit process etc and waited 5 months due to supply issues of Tesla, they were supposed to come and installed on March 8th, but on March 5th they called me and cancelled my project since my electric panel to gas pipe distance was 24inch (coded when home built but now current code is 36inch). They asked me to move my electric panel which is min $20k additional cost. -After that bad experience, I started to search other companies, many solar companies sales person i reached, without understanding my problem, told "sure we can install" which didnt give any trust , so i started to discuss my issues on forums -Then I found NorthStar Solar, first person I talked, Ryan, we talked 45 minutes and he approached very professionally, like a textbook approach, exactly the same approach I saw on forums, which is: adding a conduit to existing panel from behind, moving all the load to a subpanel far away from gas pipelie, behind a fire resistant wall, since code allow for Like for Like updates without adding a conduit from front surface. This approach was just requiring more labor, supply and time also requiring a painter to come and fix the inside wall, so this is why Tesla cancelled the project but Northstar did it. -They also installed EV charger to me with a permit as a part of the project -They installed the system with a future proof architecture so I can install battery in the future. I reached to them on March 5th, They installed the system in the beginning of April, permit passed on 1st visit, even the city permit inspector said " it is great clean job" and now my system is live.... So in my entire process, Dani managed the project very timely and professional, Ryan was always easy to reach and very helpful, their entire crew was top star. Even the person came for inspection was the professional electrician, so answered all my questions. Worksite both inside and outside, it was cleaner than they started. They fixed even the crawl space vent and many more details. And even after this great service, they didn't ask or say anything about writing review :) which many other companies asks....
