Scheduled a phone appointment 2 weeks in advance. Sent all the info they asked for. Got email confirmation 4 days before appointment. Day of appointment - no call. I called them - they rescheduled to later that day. Prior to 2nd appointment they asked for my utility data. 30 minutes after my 2nd appointment they said they can't do it because my roof is too steep. You get the picture: they forgot the appointment, they didn't do any prep with any of my data, they wasted everyone's time. Very disappointing since I wanted to go with a local company. read more

Sun Light and Power replaced our ten-year-old solar array with a much more efficient system, after we replaced our roof. The new system, together with our existing batteries, will vastly reduce the power we draw from PG and E, allowing us to pay back the cost of the new system in about 6 years. Technological improvements over that past ten years allow our new system to produce 3 times the output of the old. We chose Sun Light and Power because they were the only firm willing to consider replacing our old system -- other firms all speculated that a new system wouldn't be profitable, with recent changes in PG and E reimbursement, and because our roof is quite steep. They designed the new system, did all of the PG and E paperwork, obtained the permits, removed our old panels and inverter, and in about 3 days, got the new one installed, dodging frequent periods of rain. The project took less than 3 months from initial inspection to full power, including getting PG and E's permission to operate the new system. Not cheap but worth it. read more

So I live in an hoa , we are serviced by sun light and power. We got an alert from the water company that our water had been constantly running for greater than 24 hours. We called and requested service. They were able to move our appointment up seven days, but that still left us another seven days of water constantly running waiting for them to come out for service. The tech was friendly and solved the problem. read more

I have an old 1980s vintage solar thermal system in Oakland. A few months ago they replaced a 4' x 8' panel with a new one from Heliodyne. More recently they programmed my pump controller for telemetry and re-insulated all the supply pipes. They even helped with some damage during that last vicious wind storm. I've appreciated the level of communication that I've received from the SL&P team. I feel good about the fact that I have a go-to service vendor for solar thermal without getting pressured to purchase a new system. read more

These guys are amazing. I called, they came by, they looked at our smallish home in SF, explained exactly what things would cost, and even walked us through options, very patient throughout. I got my house solar-powered three years ago, and it's been pretty fantastic. Everyone from the sales person to the contractors doing the install were smart, loved their jobs, and were really interested in doing what they were doing. Either that or they're given happy pills each morning. The work was done very professionally, and they've even run interference with PG&E to help me get the best rate so that I can pay my system off in time. With the price of f*cking electricity going through the f*cking roof, it's time for you to go solar. You won't regret it. read more

Great service! After 14 years of solar power, our solar inverter stopped working. We received a fast response and excellent service from Sun Light & Power. Worst customer service and product ever! After initial installation, an entire row did not work. After they repaired that problem, the system completely turned off, has not worked since. Want to charge me $550 just to come inspect the system which they installed ($200 just for cost of driving to my house)! I had a Fronius system that could convert up to 9 kW from my array which could generate up to 8.7 kW. The inverters were damaged by a surge over the power lines. They said they could replace my inverters and it would be the same as before. Unfortunately the replaced it with an inverter that could only convert a maximum of 6 kW. I worked with them for over 6 months (emails and phone calls) to fix this problem. After initially giving me an estimate for the upgrade ( which I approved) they then decided not to do it (why I don't know). They came up with a variety of species arguments which kept changing. They finally wore me down and I have given up working with them. A very unpleasant and time consuming experience. read more

Eek! Me thinks not is an understatement! These guys are charlatans. We've had nothing but problems, problems, problems throughout the whole, extremely expensive process. Every time they screw up they blame my fabulous contractor. At the end they charged us an extra $3K to fix a problem THEY caused and help us over a barrel and wouldn't finish the job unless we paid. Notice how all the reviews are years old? I'm thinking they've slipped big time in the last few years. Do yourself a favor and do your research. Go else where. read more

Sun Power & Light installed our 3.5kw system about 10 years ago. They provided terrible customer service back then when solar was still in its early adopter phase - and they actually got worse this year when we called them to check out our system to see if it needed any maintenance or if they they thought an upgrade might be warranted. 10 years ago, they took more than 2 months to file a form that was needed for us to get our $15k rebates from the Feds & state solar incentive programs. This year, they sent out a fellow to do a system audit and review for $200 and $60 travel fees from Berkeley to our home in Oakland. When he arrived, he said "oh, I should have brought a ladder to get on your roof" (duh), "oh, I should have brought a technician" (duh again) and he wound up just saying if we thought there was a problem we should call PG&E for an energy audit. No report. No information. No insights. No service. When we called to attempt to have someone provide an actual visit - all they did was send us a check for a $30 discount. Stay away from these folks. There are plenty of solar folks out there now that actually want your business and not just your money. read more

2 weeks later I had phone call from Gary....apologetic for the misunderstanding about servicing a less-than-one year old upgrade installation. Offered to reimburse me for the cost of my calling a plumber to fix a piping leak. Also informed me that their service rate was $120 per hour, not $180. Sun Light and Power has serviced our solar hot water heater for 20 years. It was in place when we moved into our house and is now over 30 years old and still basically working. Recently the supplemental hot water tank started leaking and we needed service fast. Ian, who is their great service technician, emailed me extensively to help me turn off the system and then was able to make a visit to finalize shutting down the system. We have always received professional advice and great help from Sun Light and power. We plan on getting our system back up to speed with a new solar tank and of course will rely on Sun Light and Power to install it. read more

I had them spec out and install a solar system during my house remodel in 2008/2009. The system they designed was far too small for my energy needs, so despite going through all the expense and hassle I still have a large electricity bill. What's worse there doesn't seem to be any way to add on to the system to generate more solar power. They were not responsive during the construction process. I'd send emails and make phone calls multiple times before I got a response. There was a lot of staff turnover and each time a new person took over I'd have to explain the whole history of the project to them. read more

I am amazed at how reliable my 44 panels and support equipment are. I literally have not paid an electric bill except for a meter fee since it was installed. Sure, it doesn't produce as much when it's dark, rainy or the short days of winter but boy, in the summer, my NME Summary credits for the excess electrical power that I provide to PG&E add up enough to take care of those times. LOVE that Credit Balance! Had a leak last year under the panels and Sun Light & Power was immediate (!) in their response to find the problem and then FIX it. Lastly, I did a refinance and there was some question about if the system was paid for. It was paid in full on installation and even the office people were quick and immediate with help, answers and solutions. I wanted to install a PV solar system on my San Francisco house. I got bids and interviewed 6 firms, 4 from SF, one from Marin, and Sun Light & Power. Most of the reps were very helpful, but Eric, from Sun Light & Power was really thorough and informative, without any pressure. One national firm was relentless in their pitch, which turned me off. PRICE: Sun Light & Power was # 2 firm in price, but I went with them after vetting their most recent customers, who were uniformly positive. INSTALLATION: Crew was on time, workmanlike, and professional. Install completed in a little more than two days, and was very clean. Crew chief made thoughtful suggestions re: aesthetics of location of control panels, which made for better results. COMMISSIONING: Done on time, and with scheduling of PG&E taken care of by Sun Light & Power OPERATION: System working flawlessly, and slightly exceeding the output projected by Sun Light & Power. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Sun Light & Power did all paperwork for tax rebates, and SF rebates. Helpful on instructions for computer interface of monitoring as well. CONCLUSION: First rate, across the board. Using them on new commercial project under way. read more

Great Service. After 8 years I was getting unusual PGE bills and wondered why. They came out and checked the original equipment and found that supplier's control unit was still under warranty and not functioning. They checked all parts and went to bat for us to replace the unit for free. Totally awesome. It took some calls and finally we got the new unit and the job done! Way to go! Theirs was one of three bids I got for solar electric installation 4 years ago. Not only was the bid really high, but the design they proposed on my SOUTH facing sloped roof was rather impractical: they proposed a whole framework to suspend the panels really high off the roof, adding to the cost of the framework AND the structure needed to withstand the uplift of winds that would otherwise try to pull these off like sails on a boat! needless to say, i can't speak for their service and installation quality, for we did not go with their bid. ...all iI can say is that maybe 4 years ago they were not as experienced at providing efficient designs. Maybe they are much better now. For anyone looking to install solar electric, I can unequivocally recommend the investment. Select someone who provides a service plan (maybe even including the occasional glass cleaning of the panels to make them more efficient). If you elect to hire this outfit, make sure that the design they propose is practical. read more

In 2006 we decided we needed solar power and contacted our friends who had Sun, Light and Power install solar power for them and were very pleased. Sun, Light and Power came out to our house to look at the layout and determine how much power we could generate. Their people were very professional and thorough throughout their proposal and installation. They answered all of our questions and concerns. Our system last year performed much better than expected and our PG&E bill went from $400 per month in 2005 to $171 PER YEAR in 2012 even with electricity rates rising many times since 2006. Since October, 2006, we have reduced our CO2 emissions by approximately 155,000 pounds making our environment much greener. read more

SL&P installed my system in 2008. Everything has worked as planned. We initially had an issue with one inverter, and SL&P replaced both inverters at no cost to me. Monthly electric bills before solar were around $800 a month. Last year total bill was $9.75!! read more

Our system was installed and online in 2009. The process for us to think through what we needed and could afford took a fair amount of time while we sought bids. The Sun Light & Power employees were helpful in the explanation and the installers did an excellent job. Bought a house with a solar unit installed by Sun Light & Power. They installed the unit improperly on a really old roof and quoted me $6,000 to remove them and reinstall for roof replacement. It took them 6 weeks and me calling 4 times to get a verbal quote. I was never provided a written quote. Bad customer service plus bad craftsmanship plus most expensive bid = company I will not be recommending. Ally electric gave a competitive bid at less than a third of the price from Sun Light and Power, friendly, and professional service, with a 2 day turnaround for quote and did the reinstallation properly. go with them. read more

I hired these folks to inspect a roof solar collector system and a tankless hot water heater. They overcharged me for the cursory inspection and didn't follow up to replace a water filter, as they had promised. I don't feel at all confident that their inspection was thorough and for what they charged, definitely not worth it. read more

Well, sorry to say we had a very bad experience with this company. Their initial sell was great, all smiles and yes we can attitude. Once the work started, it was another story. Their roofer drove over 100 nails through our ceilings so that we had to get the whole ceiling, which was natural wood, redone. Unbelievably, a week later, the roofer drove more nails through the ceiling of another room. They had to send out their worker twice to fill in & patch the nail damage in the other room,and she still didnt get it right. They argued tooth and nail about whether or not it was their responsibility (saying it was the roofers...their subcontractor, not ours), all the while insisting they are a great company who really cares about their clients. The icing on the cake came after we had paid the bill (33k for 8 panels!), they announced they were keeping the 4k PGE rebate as per the contract we initially signed. Shame on us for not understanding the rebate issue as written in the contract, but verbally they had told us they would "take care of the applying for the rebate". Is it great to have solar energy? Hell yes! But buyer beware! If I had to do it over, I would go with Sungevity. read more
