First off all, the Sun is only getting hotter and energy costs are only getting higher. So everyone should GET SOLAR A friend referred me to Sutro and we're forever grateful. JP and his squad are smart, efficient, responsive and all around good dudes. From estimate to install, JP oversaw that everything was going accordingly by making regular check-in calls and driving also by driving down to Palo Alto for "house calls". The winter that followed our install was a very wet one. When our roof began leaking, I mistakenly thought it must have been related to the solar panels. I called JP and, within hours he was there with Marvin (his "roof guy") to assess the situation. While we determined that is was a pre-existing roof issue from a previous contractor, they still immediately went into fixit mode. JP and his crew were able to help me out with solar installation at my house (27th ave & Lawton) in the SF sunset neighborhood. The short of it is that if I were to do it all over again, I'd still work with JP. He was responsive and very much context-sensitive to what I was trying to do. We were able to work together and come up with a solution that worked for me. The longer story is that I was building out my house at the time and I wanted to have solar panels installed as part of the project. Almost every single large installers that I had talked to refused to work with me because they only wanted to install the system after a house is completed. I suppose my situation was quite different than most because I wanted the system to be integrated into everything I was were trying to do with the house at the time so that I could ensure things are done correctly. I didn't want to get into the situation when there's a leak, the solar installers and builders are pointing at each other for the responsibility. I wanted both parties to be responsible for the outcome together. Anyways, JP was easy to work with and was able to come up with a design that I was happy with too. There's just a lot of design tradeoffs in this kind of thing and there were decisions that I wanted to be a part of. I had a lot of fun going through the project with his team. We worked with Sutro Power to add solar to our 123 year SF single family home. One thing that stood out was that they were able to work on highly pitched roofs, which many other installers were not willing to do (I later saw why -- it's harder work!). Things we loved - Team. The whole team is awesome - Mason, Juliano, Austin, etc. All super friendly, seem to work hard, and full of creative problem solving. Even with curveballs like an inspection issue, they figured out a few different alternatives and did something that was great. - Feedback. When I pointed out 1-2 things that looked aesthetically off, they were really open to that feedback & adjusting it. When I had some feedback on the contract, they were willing to put in some time to make those adjustments, and I definitely appreciated that.  - Results. The panels seem to be performing great, and excited to have gotten there. Once they got to work, the installation was relatively quick and efficient, despite a "hard" job on a pitched roof. - Price/cost. They were super competitive price wise and appreciated that the contract was the price - no surprises, no nickel & diming. Stuff to keep getting better at: - Overall timeline. Could've done a bit better communicating where we were in the "install" queue. We waited a bunch of months and then bam, it was our turn :) may be less of an issue now that the NEM 2.0 deadline is in the past. - Communication. We had a great experience with Sutro power for a solar installation on our 100+ year old house. Our project was quite complicated due to the steep pitch of our roof and a number of existing dormers that limited the area we could put solar. Sutro was one of the only companies we spoke to that was even willing to work on a pitch that steep. JP, Juliano, and the whole team came up with a custom design to maximize our power output with 19 panels squeezed in as much as possible to catch the sun at as many hours of the day as possible. Only because of that effort we were able to get a system that worked great for our growing power consumption while adhering to the various building code requirements. Before, during, and after the project they were excellent and responsive communicators. During construction, when an extremely unlikely event occurred where a drill nicked a power line in the rafters, JP and team jumped all over it, promptly (and safely) addressing the issue, and then patching and painting to cover the repair work, all handled without haggling over fault or cost. All minor decisions such as the location of the shutoff switch, a change in the specific model of panel (and reduction in cost) were handled smoothly and transparently. We have had our 4.1kW solar panel, and Powerwall 3 system up and running for almost 2 months now. It was such a pleasure working with JP, Juliano and team. We had been looking to install solar for several years and went to all the usual suspects for estimates, none of whom worked out. Our electricity usage is quite small, as is our roof, and we were either told it was not worth their while to take on the job, or they would quote but insist on a minimum number of panels that would fill our roof to the brim with no real consideration for impact to or by neighbors should they go solar in the future. Then we were told about Sutro. From the get-go it felt right. On the first call, I showed JP some of the designs from prior estimates and he immediately pointed out the pitfalls and explained in detail why they were just wrong. He came up with a design that apart from a couple of tweaks ended up being the one we went with. I was tremendously encouraged by how much consideration was put into possible impact to/by neighbors. We should neither overshadow nor be overshadowed should panels be added on either side. None of the other companies even mentioned this in their haste to sell as many panels as possible. Once the design was complete and contract signed things moved quite fast. The team were great, arrived when expected, would hardly have known they were there, never left a mess. Fire department and electrical inspections passed without a hitch. Once PTO (permission to turn on) was received from PG&E we were live within a week. The ability to monitor the performance of the panels and Powerwall 3 from within the same Tesla app used for the car is a bonus. We have a Model 3, and it's so easy to just toggle from car to the solar. We have enabled the "Charge from Solar" function and on quite a few occasions have managed to add as much as 45 miles in a day purely from solar while recharging the Powerwall and providing power to our home. We have set the Powerwall backup reserve to 20% as we have had a few outages in the last few months (none since going live with solar) but with our usage 80% is more than sufficient to power us through the night or a day long outage. I do have to admit that some of the "intelligence" in the Powerwall seems a bit lacking. We are still pulling small amounts of energy from the grid even when 100% charged and set to "Self-Powered", and the utility rate plan for CleanPowerSF is totally wrong, which is not good when set to "Time-Based Control". But these are Tesla issues, not Sutro's. That being said, Powerwall 3 is a real space saver, runs quiet, and looks sleek, and at 13.5 kWh more than sufficient for our current needs (no pun intended). I would also advise downloading the NetZero app, or accessing the web app (https://app.netzero.energy/) which allows you automate config changes. It also has a graph that lets you readily see actual vs projected panel performance, which is comforting as has confirmed for me many times that the panels are achieving the maximum expected wattage. All in all, has been a great experience, so happy to have found a locally owned and operated company, cannot recommend enough, and would definitely use again. read more

Local operator who understands San Francisco permitting well, and also could walk me through details on whether to tie in multiple meters in my multi unit 4 apartment building or not. System design went well, with a bit of back and forth due to my questions, but JP was responsive throughout. Installation didn't go perfectly, due to a technician who was confused about cable genders, but that was ultimately sorted out without too much time going by after the system was activated. 1 year in, and it's produced about 10% more power than the quote estimate/guarantee even with the one panel that wasn't properly connected for a brief bit of time. Only real thing to improve would be getting crews to do more of the active roof work earlier in the day when the shingles are cooler and would get less wear and tear. That's going to vary by worker availability, and we all know that's hard in the San Francisco labor market, so it isn't something I view as Sutro's fault. It just is life here. For anyone else wondering about multiunit solar, it's just not that great due to PG&E and regulatory issues. PG&E chargers a flat fee per solar connected meter, so it ends up being expensive for tenants who don't use a ton of electricity. I ended up just doing solar for my unit. read more

While at that company, JP was a very responsive consultant and answered my countless questions with great patience and detail. The installation went well enough for me to recommend his team to my parents, who were also looking for a PV system. Sutro Power did a great job for us. I highly recommend them. It's been almost two years since they designed and installed the 7.74 kW system of 18 solar panels on the flat roof of our home in San Francisco. They completed the job in slightly more than 3 months from the contract date (and that included the time spent in the queue for the planning department). JP and Juliano were very straightforward and easy to work with on the design, their scope of work, the contract, their schedule and the price. We were living in our home while the work was done so it was particularly good for us that the crew who did the work were all competent and good to have in our garage and up on our roof. They kindly agreed to postpone the installation of two of the panels for almost six months while we completed other work on the roof. They returned when we were ready and attached the two final panels without any delay or fuss. And, if they invite you to their year-end party, go! Sutro Power made getting solar a positive and seamless experience. My experience starting with solar actually didn't start with Sutro Power. I signed up through a popular solar panel company who assigned me to local solar installation company. The sales guy talked me into signing a contract. They never followed up, made false promises and based off my roof type, decided to not install. This happened after 3 months of wasted time. I started to search for a new solar company and used Yelp this time. Came across Sutro Power and couldn't be more happy. It takes a team and a great organization to get the job done right. Led by JP who did a phone screening and provided good options, straight answers, and throughout the process provided constant communications, phone call or text messages. They did preliminary on-site meeting, Dylan provided a quote and had me sign a contract. Juliano came and did measurements and created a site plan. Hearing what was going to be installed and how was helpful: where the drop line from the panels would be, the solar panel converter location installed, the cut off switch, and ground wire, etc. Understanding the plan made it easier to decided to install. Eager to get installed, I appreciated that Sutro was upfront that it could be a little bit before I got installed. That in itself makes it easier for homeowners to plan. The other solar company gave me imaginary dates and never came through. The installation date came and Rick led those efforts. One thing I felt while he was running me through the plan options, was that he was installing as if he was the homeowner. You don't always find that motivation from companies and he was genuine. Sutro did the permits, paperwork for PGE, they did the onsite inspections, they came back and did the final connection to the system.
