We engaged a roofer to assess several rust-through spots occurring on five long panels. Upon inspection, the roofer immediately attributed the cause of the rust to the solar installer, effectively deflecting responsibility. However, the evidence does not support this conclusion. Our roof consists of two levels, and we observed rust on several spots across five long panels--many of which are not adjacent to the solar installation. Furthermore, the upper level of the roof, which has no solar panels whatsoever, also exhibits couple similar rust spots. These observations strongly suggest that the rust is not caused by the solar installation but rather stems from a material or manufacturing defect. Despite these panels carrying a 50-year life warranty, the roofer was quick to claim that the rust is not covered under the manufacturer's warranty. This is deeply disappointing, particularly given the clear evidence that the damage extends well beyond any area impacted by the solar work. The roofer demonstrated no willingness to help address the issue and offered no solution for the roof leak currently occurring at the lower level. The lack of accountability and absence of any proposed remediation is unacceptable given the scope of the defects observed. read more

Maciel replaced my roof about 7 years ago, and it has been fine since -- still looks like new. I was worried after a winter storm when my ceiling developed some mold spots. I called Maciel and Pete came out ASAP, even though the roof was out of warranty by several years. He correctly diagnosed that there were no leaks, but that the mold developed owing to indoor condensation on the parts of the ceiling that had been inadequately insulated. I had had the attic cleaned and insulated after the new roof, and the insulation wasn't placed all the way out to the edges. My very tall and complicated roof needed to be replaced. Several well known local companies declined to submit a bid, as the roof was too complicated (Including solar panels.) After careful research and after reading through the many Yelp reviews and our Neighborhood Facebook group page my wife and decided to go with Maciel Roofing to replace our shingle roof and aluminum gutters. After some back and forth regarding shingle color with our HOA we were finally ready to move forward. We reached out to the owner Pete he then came out and provided a written estimate. He answered all of our questions via email and phone quickly. After we signed the contract he called us several days later and scheduled our roof and gutter replacement. His crew was prompt and arrived earlier. We were lucky and 2 of his crews came out to work on our house. There were about 8 workers with several company trucks. His son supervised the work and constantly kept us up to date with the progress. The crew did an amazing job. The gutters also came out very nice. Roof looks great. Replaced a flat roof section and a shingle section that was very low slope and I chose all torch down 2 layer. They cleaned up really well, can't even tell they were there. There was a small charge for dry rot. Started in the morning and finished around 3pm with 2 crews. The quote said estimate 2 days of work, so I'm definitely happy about it. They looked at the roof and sent the quote the following day. I had a few questions and responses were quick (same day), cordial, and informative. They cashed the deposit check the same week and obtained the permit. Work started within less than a month. I liked that their office was in Hayward. Their office rep was very nice as well. Updating my review from some 14 years ago. All has been great, no problems up till now. I came back because of a minor gutter problem. I was up on the roof today (which still looks like new) to clean gutters before the coming rains and noticed on of the gutters had standing water in it from the dead end (by the chimney) to about halfway to the corner where the downspout is...so it must have started sagging. Not sure the reason why yet, might be a failure on the gutter mounting hardware, or on the old fascia on the house. I just left them a message and will update once they come out. read more

Didn't realize our old roof had three layers that needed to be stripped off; 2 asphalt and 1 wood shake underneath. Thought there was on 2 layers. Reroofed the pitched roof and the flat roof over the room addition. Replaced an old plastic gutter with a metal one that was failing in the back of the house. Removed and repositioned the satellite dish that was on top of the flat roof without requiring the dish to be re-aimed. Only took them about a day and a half to complete the job. Maciel Roofing provided a seamless, no-stress experience, with exceptional work and customer service from start to finish. My husband and I first started looking into obtaining a new roof and getting quotes months ago. My mother-in-law, who lives next door, also needed a roof, so we decided to obtain quotes together, in hopes of getting a discount. We both had slanted, shingled roofs and wanted complete tear offs, flashing, gutters and downspouts. Although our house is fairly standard with easy access, my in-law's house is sunken down from the street with difficult access. Initially obtaining quotes was a stressful experience from the four other companies we considered. We knew we had a decent amount of dry rot on both roofs and were very worried about hidden costs that could add up. Most companies would not give us any kind of quote for the dry rot replacement, so we were very scared that their initial quotes would turn into astronomical bills. Other companies did not respond right away to requests for quotes, and some said they would charge us a fee just to come out and give us a quote. Those that did come out for quotes spent very little time looking at the roofs, some were rude, short with us, and took weeks to send us the quote. They also pressured us to accept the quotes and begin work. The quotes we obtained were all over the place, and the companies couldn't seem to justify their costs. Maciel was the last company we obtained a quote from and we immediately went with them. They were like night and day compared to the other companies we dealt with. They responded right away, came out for a free quote, and sent the quote right away. My mother in-law said in meeting and speaking with them that they explained everything in detail and she trusted their explanations. They were the only company to give us a quote on replacing dry rot ($10 sq ft), and the only company to give us a discount to complete both roofs at once. Their quote was significantly less for my mother in-law's roof (two companies quoted $10k more on her roof alone). Their quote for our roof was in line with the other quotes we received, prior to the discount. They also guarantee their workmanship, which some of the other companies did not do. We signed and they agreed to start work mid-march, but the next week they called to say they had a cancellation and asked to start ours sooner. They estimated 4 days work for both roofs, which we thought was fast, but they completed both in only 3 days! They arrived on the first day even earlier than expected and were on the roof within 5 minutes. They brought a huge crew and a lot of trucks, but were very conscientious about parking and keeping our properties in good shape. It seemed like they rarely took breaks, and the crew worked together seamlessly. We were told that they had this crew for 20 years, and you could tell that they knew what they were doing. Each day they meticulously cleaned all around our properties and left them in better shape than when they came. They ended up having to replace nearly all the boards on my in-law's roof, and a significant amount on ours. They replaced all the vents/stacks on our roofs, added flashing and seamless gutters and downspouts. The roofs turned out beautiful and look even nicer than our neighbors who have had theirs recently replaced. I know they gave us a deal for starting early, but they charged almost nothing compared to all the work they did for the dry rot replacement. To top it off, we went out on our deck and were taken aback to see that they replaced a whole section of our siding, which our dogs had shredded some time ago and we had boarded up with plywood. Although I initially thought these five star Yelp reviews looked too good to be true, they are well-deserved. I just had my pitch roof and flat roof replaced by Pete Maciel and his team. I have never had a more positive experience with a company. They went above and beyond. Among all the proposals/bids collected, Maciel Roofing's was competitive, fair, and transparent. Most of all, Isela, at the office was extremely warm and kind. She was patient with my questions about payments, responded quickly, and never hesitated to ask Pete, the owner, to call me back. She was such a pleasure speaking with throughout this process. Even Pete responded to calls and emails over the weekend! Given other contractors being coordinated, Isela and Pete were able to move my job up on the schedule last minute! Maciel Roofing did a great job in replacing my roof. The crew was prompt, professional and worked very quickly. Roof and gutters look amazing and honestly it seems like I have a brand new house. The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because, although the team did a great job cleaning up outside, the attic was a mess. In all fairness, the fine print in the contract does state that cleaning does not include debris left in the attic. Turns out this can be done at an additional price. I did not realize this - had I been told while the work was being done that there was a lot of debris - I would have paid the extra amount to have it cleaned. That would be my one advice, to check and make sure that your attic is clear of debris as work is being completed so that you can arrange for cleaning if need be. Other than that, the team was very, very good. Pete handled all the logistics of permits and inspections. His crew was very pleasant and professional. They replaced the roof on my garage as well and took the time to cover the items inside the garage with tarp so that they would be protected from the debris and dirt. Pete and his team also came back after the work was done to meet with the inspectors and make sure that everything was buttoned up and all issues addressed. After the atmospheric river hit the bay area, my flat roof was leaking in multiple parts of the house and needed to be replaced. They used fiberglass and roll rubber granulate surface. Having dealt with a variety of contractors over the years, reliability is important to me and it is severely lacking in the industry. Maciel always responds within a day and they are always professional. They answered all of my questions and showed up as promised for the free estimate and also on the scheduled day of work. Their prices are competitive and they were able to complete the project in 1 day. They even sent me pictures of the project. Since it was a $16000 project, they even allowed me to pay the rest of the amount (after initial deposit of $1000) in 2 payments by credit card since it exceeded my credit card limit. Hugo came over that same day to take a look at my roof. Within a few hours of my initial call, I had an estimate in my email from the Owner/Estimator, Pete. I did not bid the job to others. I knew the range of pricing to anticipate. I also knew that they did a great job for my neighbor. I accepted estimate, made a deposit and was told the work would begin in 3 weeks. Sure enough, it did. The old shake roof was torn off, new decking put down and papered all in one day. This review is way overdue. I think Maciel did our roof two years ago now, maybe three. Was trying to figure out how to make a short review but never having had a roof done before I want to share the whole experience. Maciel was the first to respond, actually walked the entire roof and provided a quote later that same day. As other companies slowly responded (and maybe did nothing but a drive by) Maciel's was much higher. BUT he accounted for replacing much plywood which clearly needed to be done. There is always unknown but other quotes greatly underplayed it and when I asked for more clarity the quotes were comparable. So I went with the Maciel as they were the most responsive, upfront and honest. I felt like I wasted a few weeks for other companies to give me half ass quotes. As far as the job itself, I have no complaints. It should have taken two days but since rain was expected later in the week, they brought two crews over and knocked it out in one day. Upon completion they walked the perimeter a few times to pickup as much scraps as they could. The 'unknown' fixes and additional cost was minimal and barely worth mentioning. Super job, it looked great and I went into the upcoming rain with so much confidence. This was the biggest home maintenance cost I have had to date and I may have over analyzed options, but I'm so glad I went with them. I highly recommend Maciel. read more
