God dang this place is good. Best banh mi sandwiches in Austin! Let's start with the baguette. Each bite brings a satisfy crunch. Next the veggies, cucumber, carrot, cilantro are next level. They are slightly pickled, giving it three-dimensional flavors while retaining a natural crisp. I tried both shredded pork as well as grilled pork variations of the banh mi's. Both are amazing! The shredded pork was served cold seasoned with fish sauce with a subtle pungency that leaves each bite a cliff hanger for the next. The grilled pork has a great balance of savory and sweet complimented well with a slight bitter char of the grilled pork. The Thai tea was silky smooth. I had both the hot tofu and cold tofu, absolutely best ending to the perfect meal. I'd recommend this place to anyone! read more

Good quality banh mi (they totally accommodated to my request to add pate to my sandwich that had their awesome mayo on it too), bread was nicely toasted with a good chew (grilled pork one was my favorite, pork belly was a bit disappointing but not a deal breaker), yummy Thai tea, and that mango cheesecake was pretty tasty. The green curry pork was utterly delightful. They let you customize the level of spiciness for your meal, and a 3 was just right for me. Portions were pretty big too. The exterior looks very tacky with a bright green window banner running all around the restaurant. It looks like one of those cheesy wavy borders teachers use in their classroom, only the ugliest color and oversized, in your face. The interior isn't unpleasant, but it also doesn't feel cohesive. The booths are very uncomfortable, and the decor is mediocre. Nothing really feels like it's in place. The food just didn't taste like anything to me. Mostly bland with occasional hints of tangy, sweet, or salty. I wouldn't come here again, unfortunately. I really wanted to like this place, since it's so close to my apartment. This is based on our first visit but it won't be our last. Chang Thai is a delightful find tucked away near the WalMart near I35 & Parmer Lane. I had a very tasty and satisfying Phad Ga-Prow with tofu and my companion had the equally fine Tom Kha soup and we both left happy that we chanced upon this restaurant in the first place. I ordered my Ga-Prow with 4 out of 5 stars spicy and it was delightfully spicy without overriding the taste of the Tofu and the large cuts of vegetables. I really enjoyed this dish. The accompanying brown rice was nutty and tasty and was a substantial portion. I'm a big guy and I left quite satisfied. My companion was equally satisfied with her soup, it was full of chicken and vegetables. It was a slow night but the service was good natured and attentive. Our order was on our table within 10 minutes and the price was right. We look forward to more. read more

Miles ahead of their old stand in the back of the Hong Kong Market, now you don't have to deal with the pungent fish market smell like before. They're back!!! The wonderful Ng BMT banh mi ladies (formerly at Lucky Bakery and Hong Kong Market) now own and operate a full service restaurant at I-35 and Parmer called Ng Cafe. They serve Thai cuisine, but are still making those mind blowing banh mi (due to a technicality in their lease they have to call them "baguettes"). The. Best. Banh. Mi. On. Planet. Earth! Contrary to my initial review written over two years ago, this was our go-to Pan Asian delivery place during the pandemic and it has really gone downhill since. Their prices have been steadily increasing and for awhile it was still in the range of "kinda pricey but convenient and worth it" to going the route most Austin restaurants are lately: charge way more and give the customer way less. Had them tonight and Takeout pad thai now costs like 13.50 at the cheaper take out (not delivery) option and a banh mi went from $6 to like $9 bucks, the pad thai USED to come in a big styrofoam box but now it comes in a cardboard box about half as wide as the old containers, and thus contains about half the volume it used to. So you pay to get about half the portion you used to for the same price. The quality of the food isn't bad but it's absolutely not worth this. If they can't find a way to actually offer value with all the price hikes they're doing I don't think I'll bother to keep coming here. read more

The people running this place are SO pleasant! It took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize that this is the place that used to be in the Hong Kong Market off 183. Nevertheless, I'm glad I found them again. I've had a few dishes from the new spot and each of them has been fantastic. The Green Curry with pork has definitely become my favorite. The curry is deep and rich with flavor and the pork is juicy and delicious. One of the better Thai options in the area. read more

If our experience today is any indication, this is NOT the place for lunch on a work day. It was nearly 50 minutes from the time we walked in the door until we finally got our meal, ordered off of the regular lunch special menu. My wife and I used to live in this area, and used to frequently order takeout. Despite the common errors due to communication issues, we returned time and again for their very good food. Today's lunch definitely changed my overall impression. The fried food tasted like it had been reheated, and the pad had a disappointing salty brown sauce on it. The service was deplorably slow, as mentioned, making it difficult to enjoy what we did have. The decor has changed since we were last there, and I wondered if it was under the same management. Having said that, it is still a pretty good value, and I might give it another chance if I'm in the area again. But it won't be for a work day lunch! read more

I found them! These ladies made the best bahn mi in the back Hong Kong supermarket but they left and I thought I'd never see them again! We came in today looking looking for our favorite peppery shrimp bahn mi and it's still AMAZING!! The bread is fresh, crisp on the outside and generous size for $8. They also offered complimentary soup. We shared their shortbread cookies and brought the rest home to have with coffee in the morning. Glad I don't have to travel all the way into town to get a bahn mi! You must give them a try! read more

I live in North Austin, a massive section of this city that decent restaurant operators seem to wholly ignore, which baffles me to no end given the phenomenal success of places like Noble Pig, Asia Cafe, A&A Sichuan, etc. So I've been trying to find some places that rise above the standard mediocrity represented by most restaurants in the area, and I finally found another one. I went here today for lunch after seeing it when I tried the utterly crappy Mexican place next door whose review is coming soon, after my ire wanes at having been duped by the reviews of other yelpers who clearly have no idea WTF they're talking about. Anyway, I ordered their panang curry with chicken. Like others, I tend to benchmark a Thai place with safer and more commonplace dishes before trusting them with those more esoteric and regionally authentic. The curry was absolutely delicious and everything you want in a coconut based curry. The chicken was tender, the peas and bell pepper were cooked just enough to still have some texture and retain their freshness without being raw. The sauce hit all of the spicy, sweet, salty and sour notes that Thai food is known for. The rice was spot on and this dish was as good as any I've had at Madam Mam's which is my go to for decent Thai in Austin. Hell, it was even better. Additionally, the proprietor was as sweet, attentive, and as lovely as can be. She clearly hasn't taken the same page from other Asian restaurants and decided that being cordial and attentive is somehow beneath her. My only knock is to say that the salad bar isn't that great and seems to exist only to add some value to the meal. If you're going to serve super thick store bought dressings that stick like napalm to the greens, I say don't bother. Its a minor complaint given the rest of my experience. The Tom Yung Goon soup, on the other hand was delicious and the broth a sheer delight. I could drink a quart of that broth alone. Sadly this place only had about four or five tables occupied around 12:30 which I can only assume is due to the location near Walmart, Golden Corral, and other highly offensive enterprises that sane people try to avoid. In short, do not be put off by the location and try it for yourself. It would be a real shame if a jewel like this went unnoticed in the sea of turd establishments surrounding it. We went reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. We were 4 adults and a child and we ordered more than we could eat. The special on that Fri night was a Tilapia grilled in banana leaf. AMAZING!!!. We used to do this back in the day in India and so it brought back some memories. The fish was perfectly cooked but it did take some time. So if you are in a hurry DO NOT order this dish. The fried rice was good, we also order a stir fry with ginger garlic. Only disappointment was the fried noodles. The crispy noodles themself was good but there was too much soy sauce and the combination of the oil and sauce transformed the dish into something unpalatable. Chang Thai is excellent. The food is very tasty with levels of flavor. They can make it mild or spicy. If they don't ask for your spice level let them know or it will be mild. Level 1-5 with 3 being warm and flavorful but no heat sweats. Today I ordered red curry stir fry from the entree section of the menu and it was great! Curry with more vegetables than is in the curry section of the menu. The flavors in the Chang Thai curry were also amazing. Restaurant staff was amazing. We've ordered the fried tilapia ( the fish was dry and not any flavor)the curry chicken ( average) the shrimp papaya salad (mostly lettuce and barely any papaya or shrimp) and the shrimp Tom yum pot ( I don't mind the lemongrass taste, but it was way too much lemongrass pieces to pick out of the soup. read more

Delicious! Honestly, I came to visit Austin just for the day and If I ever come back, I would like to dine here again. The food had the perfect flavors and texture, our server was very polite and attentive. My Chef friend and Co-Owner of MasterKraft Foods, Chef Walter Ashcraft introduced me to this family owned and operated Thai and Asian infused eatery. When we first approached it I thought, "Wait ,this place has sandwiches??" I was initially apprehensive about it. Asian & Thai sandwich place was not on my radar. But man, are you guys in for a treat. The owners are super friendly. As a matter fact they were closed when we got there and still invited us in with a smile. They made me my first ever Thai tea and it was rich, creamy and delicious!!! Next up was the in house, made fresh daily, baguette sandwich with grilled pork. Let's stop right here. As a Louisiana native, I love French bread. THIS is the best French bread in Texas bar none! Crunchy and flaky on the outside. Moist and buttery on the inside. Perfect! The sandwich itself? Outstanding!! With perfect amounts of cilantro, pickled carrots and onions, the grilled pork just melts in your mouth. You can't get this flavor combo anywhere else.
