I've been here a few times and have also ordered through Uber Eats and DoorDash, but I never got around to writing a review--until now! I usually go for the chicken or ribeye beef bánh mì, and the portions are just right--not too much, not too little. The bread is made fresh daily, which really makes a difference. I also appreciate that there's some flexibility with customization if you're not a fan of certain traditional garnishes or want to add extras. Their Vietnamese and Thai dishes are consistently good as well--I tend to stick with their curry, which never disappoints. On this visit, I stopped by for Vietnamese iced coffee and some baked goods. I tried the shortbread cookies; they weren't soft like I had hoped (their lemon cookies are soft and delicious- my husband had it from here before), but that's pretty typical for shortbread. The iced Vietnamese coffee is one of my favorites here--perfectly balanced, not overly sweet and not too bitter. Disappointing portions despite decent flavor. This visit felt like a tale of two dishes. 2 stars = It could have been better, and it definitely could have been better. I ordered to go. On the positive side, the Pork Bahn Mi was pretty good. The bread was fresh and chewy, the veggies were tasty, and the pork had good flavor. That said, the meat portion was noticeably light. It wasn't terrible, but a few more pieces of pork would have gone a long way. The real letdown was the Chicken Pad Thai my friend ordered. Pad Thai typically runs anywhere from $13-$19 or more around town, and this place caught my attention by pricing it at the low end ($13). Unfortunately, once you opened the to-go container, it was clear why. The portion was shockingly small--maybe 25% of the container filled--and there was barely any chicken. It honestly looked like a kid-sized portion. I have actually seen this trend with other places where you get less when you order to go. At the store I inspected the order and noticed this, so I mentioned it to the staff and was met with a shrug and silence. When I brought it to my friend (who's petite and loves pad thai), even she immediately asked, "Where's the meat?" She finished it and was still hungry--and that's never happened as she eats Chicken Pad Thai weekly. She confirmed with me that she was not pregnant (lol) so I ended up sharing my sandwich with her. She said it tasted fine, but nothing special, and definitely not worth $13. While the Bahn Mi was solid, the overall experience screamed shrinkflation. The lower price point felt like a bait-and-switch once you see the portion size. We've had Chicken Pad Thai at places like Sip Saam, 888, 1618, and others for slightly more money, but with far more food and chicken. We enjoy trying new spots, but this was a one-and-done for both of us. Saving a few ounces of noodles and a couple pieces of chicken might minimally help costs in the short term, but it hurts customer trust and satisfaction long term. Fair portions matter just as much as flavor--and unfortunately, this place missed that balance. NG Cafe is run by a very sweet couple and it is influenced by Viet and Thai cuisine. I got the Vietnamese egg rolls and Bun Cha Ha Noi they were great. The egg rolls were perfectly crunchy, crispy, and full of flavor. The Bun Cha Ha Noi was very unique; the pork cutlets had good texture but maybe could have had more umami. What the pork cutlets lacked was made up in the sauce as well as the rice vermicelli, which is a weakness of mine. This is for the banh mi sandwich. I discovered this banh mi when Minh was selling them in the now defunct Asian grocer by the Target near 183 and Peyton Gin road. Back then it was called NG BMT. I have no idea what it stood for. At the time, I was trying to find every banh mi sandwich I could get my hands on to find the best in Austin. I probably ate at around 8-10 different places and this was the best. All of the insides are deliciously made and I ate all the various flavors. The traditional pork with pate was the best, imo. I pulled off the fresh jalapeños but the jalapeño spread eventually added up and overwhelmed me. The soup and lemonade cooled me right down though. I ordered Singapore noodles and it tasted pretty okay, the portion is def on the smaller side. The interior feels hot and I think the AC was not working properly. This was my first time coming to NG Cafe, and I'm glad we did. From the outside, the restaurant is non-assuming and very low-key, however the inside is bright, spacious, and decorated well. They weren't crowded, but they were also cranking out to go orders. I'm told the Banh Mi here is great, since they make their own bread in house. However I opted for the Pad Thai. Maybe I'll get a tofu banh mi the next time I visit. The entrees are delicious and filling. The portion size of my pad thai was a touch too big. I've been going to the different iterations of NG cafe ever since they were a bang mi stall in a strip mall off 183. They were a full service restaurant before the pandemic in the Walmart shopping center near Parmer and I-35 and now they've remodeled into a counter service restaurant. The interior is stunning and they have an area with couches and chairs in the middle to eat at or tables in the main dining area. What hasn't changed are the banh mi sandwiches. They are still the best in my opinion. I live the baguettes here's since they outer crust is nice and crispy and they have a great bite to them without being too chewy. I get the traditional one and can easily eat a couple of these. They aren't as cheap as they used to be but well worth it and I'm glad that I work nearby so I can come here more often. I ordered the classic banh mi, and it was absolutely delicious and reminiscent of places I've tried in other cities - even better than some, in my opinion. In the middle of the room, there's a station to get sauces, utensils, and water. This place is great for families, big groups, and small groups! This place is a hidden gem! I loved the atmosphere and the people working were so nice. The food was incredible too. I loved my shredded pork Bánh mì - just as the other reviews said the bread is perfect. The meat was cooked to perfection and there was only one bite that was fatty. I really enjoyed the pickled vegetables and sauce they had on it too- the perfect balance and not overpowering (as someone who doesn't like pickled vegetables I was nervous But this was so good!! This is a cute mom and pop shop cafe with great selections. There is a nice mixture of foods and bakery items. As someone with Vietnamese parents, as soon as I entered the cafe I heard the same music that my mom played a lot in the house that made me feel at home. We ordered the bun cha Ha Noi, spring rolls, and green curry. Everything was so delicious. Each of our entree items came with a choice of egg drop soup or sweet and sour soup.
