We LOVE this place. Here's why: 1) The staff has always been so friendly, and recognizes us because of our order now. We are always treated nicely here. 2) The location is good; right off of 35, tucked away by Buffalo Wild Wings and Walmart, with plenty of parking. Yes, it may get busy around lunch time, and the parking lot will be busier during dinner rush hours as well, but we've never had a problem finding a spot for dining in/taking out. 3) They have a great variety of flavors and know how to make a spicy dish! I started out eating their Pad Thai and worked my way up to Level 5 spicy - dang! I love spicy food but find that a lot of places either label things "spicy" and it's just mildly hot...or, they go all in and make it way overly spicy for food challenges and such. This place hits a perfect balance. Level 5 spicy makes my eyes water and nose run with each sequential bite, but it's not so bad that it has me fumbling for a glass of milk. We also love their green curry fried rice, basil fried rice, and Thai curries - which I didn't used to like at other restaurants around here, because mostly it was a one-note dish that wasn't seasoned enough. This place does EXCELLENT red curry! 4) Their food comes in big portions. Usually, my boyfriend and I can split one dish and an appetizer of spring rolls for lunch. When we're feeling hermit-y, we get multiple dishes and save the leftovers for more yummy meals over the next few days. Please try this place if you haven't yet. This place has become my favorite banh mi spot! Both the grilled pork and the pork belly were great choices, with the pork belly having a delectable spicy zing to it. The bread quality was great and very fresh-tasting and did not get soggy even with the vegetables/meat inside. The rangoons and dumplings were also solid choices for appetizers. It was really tasty & just the right amount of spicy for me... and a good portion. Loved the way they stir fried the veggies-- they were the perfect amount of crisp & tender. Their white rice compliments it better than their brown rice. Pad Ga- Prow is basil and spicy sweet sauce with stir fried veggies & meat/tofu. It's also really good. Shakespeare wrote that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. In this case, a banh mi at Ng BMT, now called an "Asian sandwich" at Chang Thai, tastes every bit as good. Best banh mi in Austin, hands down. I've eaten them in Saigon and this place gets them right. The baguette is crispy and crunchy -- the owner said she worked at an Italian restaurant for a bit before opening the new restaurant, and she used some of the knowledge she gained there to make the baguettes even better. The fillings are great -- the pickles, in particular, stand out in comparison to other Austin banh mi joints. On top of that, the service is great, the owners are friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended! read more

We decided to try this place for lunch one day after seeing a review posted on the Nextdoor app from one of our neighbors. We were promptly greeted inside and our server was very polite. We ordered pork egg rolls as an appetizer but when we got them, they were vegetable rolls with no pork. My husband ordered a spicy noodle bowl and I ordered a chicken banh mi sandwich. My husband asked for his sauce to be spicy. Our server told us that it would be too spicy for him. When he received his bowl, it was not spicy at all. When I received my my sandwich, the bread was hard, the sandwich was cold and the toppings were very minimal. Also would really bothered me was that the "chicken" was unrecognizable. It did not look like chicken at all. It was very dark, gray looking matter that did not taste or look like chicken. I was very disappointed and although the service was good I don't think I will be back because our food was not appetizing and it is questionable whether our entrees were what we ordered in the first place. I guess it will remain a mystery. I'd like for this place to do well but they definitely have to step their game up. There's been several restaurants over the years that I've been located in that same location that did not succeed I'm hoping that NG Cafe will be the exception to the rule. The owners of Ng Cafe are the same owners of Ng BMT that used to be inside the Hong Kong Supermarket. This place was my go to whenever I was craving a banh mi because their bread is made fresh every single morning and really sets them apart from the rest. My favorite banh mi is the classic combination because it has absolutely everything you need to complete the baguette. The pate and the butter melt deliciously together in your mouth but the texture contrasts nicely with the crunchiness of their baguette! With their new location also comes new menu items. My girlfriend and I tried their hot and sour soup and their tom kha from the soup bar. Definitely hit the spot. For dessert they have the BEST LEMON COOKIES OF ALL TIME. I'm not even kidding. If you're lucky enough to stop by at a time when they still have some left in the sample platter, take the chance to try them. You can buy a stuffed box from their display case to take home "for the week", but if you're anything like me they won't last through the next 24 hours because they're so addicting. To top it all off, the service is top of the line. The two ladies and gentleman (always in the back so if you get to see him it's like a unicorn sighting) who own the place are exceptionally welcoming and insistent that you sample anything that catches your eye. Their recommendations are always on point and even when the rest of Texas is freezing your butt off their smiles will melt your heart. tl;dr - If you're craving a banh mi, fresh baked goods, hot soup, or a friendly smile, this is the place to go. Amazing. I've had the bahn mi from this place multiple times and it never disappoints. My favorite is the meatball. The chicken is also good and friends have said the pork belly was delicious. I've also had the sesame bun and mango sticky rice, both good. Even during the pandemic, the sandwiches I've gotten have been great. The baguettes are crispy on the outside and soft inside. I was in town only for a day and was driving by and decided to try it. The staff was very polite and respectful. I ordered the jungle curry as it sounded different and fun. I asked for it very spicy and it was delicious but clearly not spicy. Luckily i had asked for some extra peppers on the side. I also tried the mango mousse cake which frankly was just okay. How have you not been to Chang Thai? Shame on you for judging the place because Walmart and Golden Corral are nearby, summoning the zombie masses. Shame on you, too, for thinking Titaya's is the end-all-be-all authority on Thai food in Austin, and for being such a sad sap, begging at that mistress Titaya's door for a seat when the telephone recording states that they are over capacity and will not even be taking to-go orders. Pathetic. Go instead to Chang Thai (today? tomorrow? as soon as possible). The friendly staff will answer all your questions and get the steaming, fresh coconut soup and masaman chicken right. That masaman sauce cured ailments I didn't even know I had. The pad thai was to the liking of my pad thai expert dining companion; it's never been my thing, but it was tasty. As you surreptitiously examine the dessert menu (before you're through with dinner, naturally), they will refill your water approximately 27 times and get your leftover containers lined up. They don't list their desserts online so I'll try to remember it... Nope. I ate it pretty quickly. It involved sticky black rice and a half-gallon of ice cream. I implore you: go to Chang Thai. Based on my experience and that of friends, it's been pretty quiet when we've stopped in. 3.5 stars for Chang Thai. The service was quite good. Our waitress was both attentive and friendly. We ordered the Tom Kha in a pot, the catfish curry dish and Pad Kee Mao. The Tom Kha arrived unlit with a huge pile of goo underneath... once she lit it I thought I was instantly transported back outside to the 100+ degree heat! Our soup started boiling and we were both choking down the flame exhaust. She came over and doused out the fire... too much! The Tom Kha was flavorful and (besides boiling) full of veggies and chicken. At $10 the Tom Kha could easily be a meal for two people. We didn't realize this but will have tons left over! My Pad Kee Mao was... good. It was good. I took most of it home due to being so full from the soup. It had a different taste too it, a bit of a sour spice versus the normal sweet peppery spice we see often here in Austin. It wasn't bad, it was just different. I prefer the more traditional black peppery spice serve at Tittyayas. It did come loaded with veggies which made me happy! I never can get enough veggies in my Pad Kee Mao. The catfish dish came highly recommended - I don't eat catfish so I didn't try it but The Fish Eater gave it a nice star ranking. Our waitress honored the 15% off checkin code offered on Yelp which was very nice, it actually expired June 30th. All in all I probably will be hitting up some of my favorite Pad Kee Mao places because we walked out with a $35+ bill for two people. That was a little bit more then I was willing to spend for lunch, especially when I know I can pay less for more quality at my regular stops. read more

Chang thai is fresh and straight forward thai food! The service is attentive. They have different specials everyday and most entrees are 9 or 10 bucks. Try the iced coffee and a flat noodle dish with basil in it! My only complaint is location wise, they are located in a strip mall near a very busy wal-mart at parmer/35. At certain times, it can be a real hassle exiting that shopping center but it has great places to eat, such as Chang Thai, Ho Ho's, French Quarter Grille and BOMBAY EXPRESS(my fav! if you can't tell!) read more

Although I lived in Austin for six years, I now reside in Berkeley, CA. At my current apartment, I'm within walking distance of four Thai restaurants and none of them can hold a candle to Chang Thai. I came here for dinner last week with my girlfriend and one of my friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food. We started by sharing some vegetarian spring rolls. They were served hot and fresh out of the fryer. Spring rolls are generally good because fried food is awesome, but these were especially good. The vegetables inside the roll had a nice kick of spice to them that complemented the house sauce well. For our main courses, we ordered the red curry with chicken, the pad see-ew, and the Thai chicken wings (basil flavor). All of the dishes were very good, but the chicken wings were the clear winner. The seasoning was incredible and the wings were large and juicy. I would highly recommend this dish. If you are looking for some great Thai food in Austin, you should give Chang Thai a try. read more

This was my first time trying their food and I had heard that their banh mi sandwiches were very good, so I was excited to try them out! I was able to try their the grilled pork banh mi, veggie spring rolls, and crinkle lemon cookies. The grilled pork banh mi was excellent- the bread was crispy and chewy, meat was tender and very flavorful, pickled vegetables and herbs were fresh, and the entire sandwich size was larger than the typical banh mi I would get at other restaurants! (So I could save half for a later meal). The veggie spring rolls were also very good- fragrant, fresh, aromatic herbs used! :) And the crinkle lemon cookies were also surprisingly good- chewy, tangy and sweet- very addictive and perfect for a snack with some black coffee or tea. Writing this review while I'm in the place...should speak for itself. I have never came across the worst restaurant and rude wait staff ever till date in all my experience. So we ordered 2 spring rolls (vegetable) which came out having meat in it not sure which type it was, ordered vegetable pad Thai but that too came out with egg. And when we tried to confront the server about it we got new order of spring rolls but burnt and they had the guts to ask money from us for the Pad Thai and told us you should have told us you are vegetarian. I like this place a lot. But I think that it's one of those places that you have to know what to order. I loved my Evil Noodles... they were delicious. It's a red curry, and I LOVE red curry. We also had some cashew noodle dish: not nearly as good. They have a nice little salad bar that's free and has some soups too. The red one (I have no idea what the name is) is great, the white, eh. So, like I said... knowing what to order seems like it's the best way to enjoy this place. The food is solid though, so you won't hate it, you just won't think too much of it. Overall, I like this place, and I'll go back. I just won't be as adventurous as I would be were I at Titaya's. You can get anything there and be a pretty happy camper. read more
