My husband and I had several appointments with different contractors. When we met with Terry, we both felt he was very knowledgeable in all areas, and had very good pricing. Needless to say, we chose Newland Construction. From day one, we felt comfortable and at ease. Renovation Project: 1. Moved the small kitchen to our large dining room. 2. Moved dining room to former kitchen ( swapped rooms) 3. Dining room: (former kitchen) removed wall for open concept 4. New flooring 5. Stairs: replaced carpet with laminate, replaced rails 6. Living room: Added a window seat with storage 7. Living room: Added entertainment wall with shelving 8. Living room: Added modern fireplace 9. Added windows, moved sliding glass door WE LOVE THE FINISHED PRODUCT!! The pictures will speak for themselves. The project was right on schedule (5 months) and we didn't go over budget. As it is expected to run into a few snags during ANY renovation, Terry and John were very responsive and quick to resolve any issue. I can't explain enough, just how wonderful of an experience we had with Newland. The professionalism and patience that we received throughout the entire process gave us the assurance and value that we hoped we would get from such a demanding job. Our home and family were treated with respect, our ideas were welcomed and now the quality of our home life is forever changed for the better. We began meeting with contractors to see what could be done so that our home could better suit our needs. We met with two other contractors before we met Terry with Newland. After our initial consultation with Terry we knew that Newland would be the company that would help us to make our home dreams a reality. We now have exactly what we wanted in an addition and our home is comfortable and beautiful. Our family of six is now happy and peaceful, and we aren't cramped and crowded for space anymore! We had an appointment to meet for a bid and Terry calls me 5 minutes before the appointment to tell me he won't be able to make it to the appointment because he is too busy to do our project. Huh? Why couldn't you tell me this ahead of time? He then proceeded to tell me that he didn't think it was a big deal to cancel at the last minute because we work from home. How inconsiderate. I am so glad they didn't show up and I would never refer any business to this flakey inconsiderate company. read more

They constructed a deck for us as an addition to our new house. It looks stunning, as if it was built in from the start of the overall construction of the house. What stands out most to me is that Terry and John were professional and wanted to please us even as we had some issues and changes during the middle of construction. Used them once and will NEVER use or recommend them. What should have taken 6 months took over a year to complete. At the beginning owner and workers all show up. As time goes by and they have your money they seemed to disappear. Would have to continually call them to see when they were coming to do some work. Phone calls went unanswered. It was a nightmare. We could not wait till we no longer had to deal with them. And make matters worse. New land used a contractor to test the soil. We paid the soil company, we had a written contract. A year later they call saying we owed them more money. Talk about being upset. We contacted our attorney. They heard from our attorney and nothing was owed to them. read more

We remodeled and added on 10 years ago, and the new construction has not held up well at all. The stucco on the new 2nd story is cracked on the exterior corners, the windows weren't mounted flush, the tile in the new upstairs bathroom is loose and rattling because it wasn't grouted properly...some issues were masked by creative application of stucco and/or drywall mud, and the plants near the house, but now as we're doing some landscaping and further renovations they've become apparent. At one point, they tried to hand wave the new floor slab being so off-level the laminate floor was bowed, and only agreed to grind the slab level after a protracted argument. What really prompted this belated review, though, was our recent discovery that the new drywall contained asbestos! The original drywall from 1972 did not, but the new and supposedly up-to-code drywall did! A fairly straightforward repair job to repair some flood damage following heavy rain turned into a hazmat nightmare. If you're looking for quality construction and integrity, I advise you look elsewhere. read more

After living in my master suite addition the last 2 years I have to say they did a great job. This long over due review has been on delay since I wanted to get through the winter and summer seasons to see how everything settled and maintained. To start off Terry is a great guy to work with and his architecture ideas are great. He was very communicative and easy to speak with during the process. His brother John which does the construction aspect is also awesome. The crew of guys are polite and knowledgeable of what they are doing on the job. Any issues during the work was quickly remedied and completed to standards. His sub contractors were also very professional. I got many bids prior to using Newland but once I met Terry and discussed the project I felt I was in good hands. The prices were reasonable and they were able to get the work done in a reasonable amount of time. During the construction I came up with some other ideas to do while the house was being worked on and any change orders were done in a breeze. After 2 years of living in my 500 sqft master suite I still love it as the first day we signed off from the city. Since our "starter" home became the indefinite nesting home, we desperately needed additional living space. Terry and John presented two different plans: one that extended our living room space and the other that added a master bedroom. We decided to go with the extra living space for cost effective purposes, but we're glad that we have the other plans (the master bedroom addition) in case we change our minds at a later date. They and their construction crew were very professional and friendly, and they stayed within budget, which we appreciated. Moreover, they did a fantastic job; we received a lot of compliments on how the addition looked seamless, as if it was always part of the original housing structure. read more

I had a good experience working with Newland Construction. We added an addition to our home, which expanded our master bedroom to add a bathroom and walk-in closet. Each crew (roofers, framers, plumbers, drywall, HVAC) that worked on the project was professional and friendly. Terry would work with my schedule whenever possible in terms of scheduling work. BBB referred me to the Contractors State License Board in 2013. The CSLB sent out an industrial expert to investigate the workmanship problems. On 7/24/14 the CSLB ruled in my favor pertaining to the hardwood flooring, bathroom countertops and kitchen sink issues. We were denied the $5000 in overpayment because the CSLB does not deal with money issues (only workmanship issues). Newland Construction was ordered to pay within 30 day which they did. I was going to move on as I received the award last year. However, I decided to post an update because I felt the company's response to my original review is not accurate. BBB and the CSLB both advised me to file a claim with small claims court to resolve the money issue, which I intend to do in the near future. read more

Wow! I had a remodel done by Newland Construction back in 2005. We've had problems off and on over the years, now we are doing a kitchen remodel and the new contractor is finding all kinds of terrible stuff they did. When I logged in here to post about it I wasn't surprised to see how many others have similar horror stories. My problems with Newland started about 8 months after they finished the job. We added on to our first floor and also put on a second story with a master bedroom. They finished the work in September so we didn't use the air conditioner until the following summer. When we did try to use it we couldn't get the master bedroom to cool below 85°. I noticed the air flow to the upstairs was very poor, so I went into the attic and found they had tried to pinch all the ducts for the 2nd story through a 6" hole in the framing. They hadn't planned at all for how to get the air to the upstairs and somehow determined this was an acceptable solution. At first they refused to take any responsibility for the problem and actually tried to blame me for it. After numerous heated phone calls, trading certified letters, and finally threatening to sue them they ultimately agreed to pay for 1/3 of the cost of a second system, with the a/c contractor paying 1/3, and me paying the final 1/3. In hindsight, I should have sued them. Since then, the roof cricket they installed starting leaking into our kitchen doing major damage to the cabinets. They tied the plumbing from the tub in the new master bathroom into some old pipes downstairs, even though they were running new pipes for everything else upstairs. The result is our kitchen sink fills with black sludge whenever the tub drains. And, one of the sink basins in our upstairs bathroom cracked due to a bad install. Now, the new contractor is running wires for the kitchen remodel and tells us Newland did a butcher job on the wiring. They also showed me where Newland hacked into the large beam that supports the 2nd floor so they could get the drain pipe to tie in with the plumbing below. Don't know how that passed inspection, but it can't be good for the structural integrity of my home. Bottom line: They come in and tell you how they're different than the others, how they only do quality work, and all about their great reputation. But it's all a bunch of crap. They are the quintessential slimy contractors and don't care who they have to screw to make a buck. I'm sure someone from Newland is going to chime in about why we didn't contact them about these problems and question why we waited so long to complain. Honestly, I was so sick and tired of dealing with these crooks after their response to the air conditioning debacle that the thought of speaking to them again makes my stomach churn. read more

Newland Construction should be called Scheister Construction. They were behind schedule by 100%, doubling the time of the project. There are very little weather excuses in Southern California. The contractor is a fractious and poor supervisor. He complained about lumber costs going up six months into the job. Why didn't he buy the lumber when he was paid his first installments. Sounds like fraud. The air conditioning was incorrectly installed and leaks causing interior damage and mold. The inferior thin-walled copper pipes are already corroding and leaking throughout the house. These are just the major problems. The workmanship throughout is shoddy and half-assed. We are looking to sue this company. Shame on Terry Booth. He is a terrible man who ripped off my family. Any one that knows him should spend considerable time correcting his grave, immoral defects. read more

I appreciate his listening and understanding standing on my side that to expect a better communication no matter what happened. We usually always interview 3 contractors when doing a project. Terry was our first to come by and the only one. He presented everything exactly the way we wanted. They removed a wall and moved our staircase. It turned our beautiful. Every person they sent over to do the next phase was amazing. All referrals were great. This is the BIGGEST ripoff business. They did our remodel 6 years ago. Everything they put in has broken. The heater, bathroom fans, and the plumbing has slowly broken, and is not under warranty anymore. They use the cheapest parts. They are rude and inconsiderate. Stay away from these jerks. read more

We just completed a complete rebuild of our downstairs level, moving our kitchen to what was formerly our family room area. It turned out "beautiful"! My wife and I now have a large, modern and highly functional new kitchen with a giant center island. Terry & John Booth coordinated a very nice home improvement project for us. They performed at a high level of professionalism and were very open to correcting any aspect of the job that we were not 100% satisfied with. In a nutshell, we are extremely pleased that we selected Newland Construction to do our project. I personally watched each and every worker in our home and can attest to their work ethic, skills, and ability to meet the client's expectations.
