Tempura shrimp with curry

Overall lunch prices were good. The place was clean and quiet. The cheese wontons were good I like the red sauce it came with. The breading on the shrimp wasn't all the cooked and still doughy. The curry was tasty. Pad Thai was not that flavorful but it wasn't bad. Overall had an average lunch.

I ordered a chicken Pad Thai to go. I paid $15 for noodles dunked into tamarind sauce with eggs and chicken and barely any vegetable . it was the worst Pad Thai I ever had, and to make it even worst they added the hot food on a styrofoam box and the food melted box which makes the food extremely unhealthy. Terrible combo! I regretted all the way....

I cannot wait to try this restaurant once they open up again! I'm traveling for work and found this Thai place on yelp! Like there's any other place I look for food, amiright?!? They're closed this week. I hope y'all support them when they open back up in a few days! I'll be back to try it out during my next trip to Phoenix!!!

We've seen this spot is busy with tons of take out orders so we decided to give it a try tonight. The servers were attentive, the menu offered great selections, and everything we ordered was excellent! The chicken potstickers were deliciously crisp with just the right amount of ginger. The sweet and sour chicken was lightly friend and crispy, the pad Thai was flavorful and not too sweet. It's a popular place and there's not a ton of tables inside, so if you have a big party you may want to order takeout!

Plan to spend a few hours on the toilet if you choose to dine here. A pack of Immodium on hand would be helpful as well.

Ask the Community - Nara Thai

Do they have alcoholic beverages?

Yes

I'd swear this place used to be called Dara Thai. Did the name change?

Yes

Do they have any vegan options?

Possibly. I didn't ask for vegan pad Thai but had the tofu. It's very good. But I left the fish sauce and egg in it.

As a proud Yelp Elite, I decided to give this place a chance because the reviews were the best I saw in the city! The place was busy on a Sunday night and it is small but I never say customers waiting too long. There were two larger parties seated so the food took some time but nothing outrageous. We started with the calamari, spring rolls, and crab wontons. The calamari were the biggest I've ever seen and very delicious! Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the spring rolls or crab wontons. I feel like those are hard to get wrong but I was not a fan of the cream cheese that was used and it was a lot of it, barely any imitation crab. For entrees, I had the spicy basil and substituted ground chicken for chicken breast, my personal preference. I ordered level 2 spice but it was still a bit spicy for me. Trying a new Thai place is always hit or miss with spice levels so I actually thought I was being safe with 2. Additionally, the chicken was so bland. Some Thai places season their chicken, some do not and unfortunately Pad Thai Cafe missed that mark. My partner ordered the short rib curry dish and my goodness, it smelled like heaven and tasted just as good. I don't eat beef but had to taste it and it was divine! He also ordered spice level 2 and his dish was not as spicy as mine. Overall, the rest of the party enjoyed their food and there were good flavors there so I'd definitely recommend the entrees, not so much the starters.

This place seemed like our best bet. Since this time of year is busy in AZ with so many snowbirds, I booked a reservation through the online portal. It didn't end up being necessary. We were seated right away and never asked about our reservation. The restaurant is located in a strip mall. From the parking lot, it looks small and more like a fast food place, but it is actually looks double the size once you get inside. It has a nice sit-down ambience with new, clean, and somewhat rigid booths. Straight posture was definitely encouraged here in these upright seats. Although it does seem like a lot of people might order items to go, we were shielded from any traffic while eating. To start, we shared some sushi rolls. The spicy salmon was nice, but I really liked the sweetness of the unagi eel roll. They were a little sloppy in preparation, but this didn't impact the flavor. Each plate came with 8 pieces of sushi, some sliced ginger, and a small ball of wasabi. My uncle asked for an additional plate of wasabi and the server delivered it, but he commented on how they usually end up throwing it away because most people don't eat much of the green ball of fire. The table had a container of disposable chopsticks as well as two types of soy sauce. I was delighted to find the 50% less sodium variety with the green label. small plates with one paper napkin each were part of the setup. We had to ask our server for more napkins after my husband splatter soy sauce all over himself. The server brought just two more. It really wasn't enough to fix the 101-dalmatian spots he had acquired from the black soy splattered all over his white jacket. We also ordered curry. My uncle indulged in the pumpkin curry with shrimp. The bowl was massive - much bigger than mine. I had the red curry with tofu. It was beautifully presented with perfectly formed cubes of extra firm tofu lined up in the yellow soup. There was also bright red strips of bell pepper adding a pop of contrasting color. Unfortunately it didn't seem like my curry was well blended. It was as if they added cold coconut milk to a hot pan and it possibly heated up too fast causing it to separate and slightly curdle. Despite this, it still tasted good. I did have some trouble with the large size of tofu and the length of the bell pepper strips. I wish both had been just a tad bit smaller to fit in my mouth. I only had a spoon, so cutting the pieces wasn't an option. To go, I ordered the spicy green beans with shrimp to take home to my mom. She enjoyed two meals out of it. The shrimp was large and plump. Plus there was no shell or tail to pull off making it much easier and more pleasant to eat. Our bill came out to just over $100 with iced tea and sake added to the above. It seemed reasonable for the five plates we ordered. We had come during happy hour where certain items are a dollar cheaper, but I don't think we ended up ordering off that discounted menu. All and all, it was a decent meal and experience. I might come back here because of the convenient location and the availability of both sushi and Thai curry on the menu.

But for some reason, I just haven't had a great food experience at this location and sadly will likely not go back. We have tried Z's on a few occasions. The last time was about a year ago (before most recent trip). We went with a group and two people in the group got sick afterwards. One was my husband. This followed another occasion of someone getting sick (in fact, someone else in the group said they didn't want to go there for this reason). So, after that incident, we said we weren't going back. Fast forward a year and I thought why not give it another try? The reviews seemed good recently and maybe this was a fluke. So last night, we returned for another try. They were very busy for a Monday night so they obviously don't need more customers. And the staff, though clearly overworked, is friendly and nice as usual. I ordered a larb salad (something I always get at every Thai restaurant). Unfortunately, the chicken in the salad was inedible. I kept trying to eat it because the dressing was on point, but the chicken tasted like something that someone heated up too long in the microwave. And I couldn't pick it out. So disappointing. You can see it looks bad in the images. I didn't say anything because I hate complaining at restaurants. I took it home and tried it again in case I was being sensitive but it was still bad and I threw it out. We also ordered green curry with tofu and pad Thai with pork. Both were enjoyable!! And the green curry had a nice heat kick though I added spice which they eventually brought when I asked. One note: I was not exactly sure how to eat the green curry because it was served in a small bowl place on a plate with the rice in the side. Adding the curry to the plate caused the sauce to run all around but there was not enough room in the bowl to add the rice. No big deal but just weird and messy plating experience. We didn't end up getting any alcoholic drinks. But do be aware that there must not be free refills because I was charged for two lemonades. All in all, I wish this restaurant well. Obviously people love it and keep returning. The owners/staff are very friendly and nice. I just love Thai too much to keep returning to mediocre experiences when there are other options in the area.

The space itself is small, but the interior is surprisingly aesthetic and cozy, which makes it feel intentional rather than cramped. I usually gravitate toward the green curry, which hits that perfect balance of creamy, aromatic, and spicy without overpowering everything else on the plate. The flavors are bold but still refined, and nothing tastes muddy. The tom yum is another standout for me. It's bright, tangy, and comforting all at once, with layers of flavor that really pop. Even the side dishes shine. I'm a big fan of the chicken wings and skewers. They're seasoned well, cooked perfectly, and never feel like an afterthought. What really elevates the experience is how balanced yet distinctive everything tastes. Each dish stands out on its own, but the overall flavor profile feels cohesive. Service is always attentive, and the staff is consistently smiling and welcoming, which makes the wait feel easier. I also love that it's BYOB. It makes it super easy to enjoy a relaxed night, especially when I'm just snacking on appetizers with my own drinks. Sala Thai is a gem.
