Used a Groupon here over the weekend. They seem to have groupons pretty often. Overall the place was very nice. The seating is very authentic with regular tables and horigotatsu style seating. The menu had a good amount of rolls and the food was pretty good. Only knock I would say is while there was a variety of rolls, many of them were made of the same ingredients. The hand rolls however were delicious and you can custom make them. The shumai and tempura were very delicious. The noodles were also good with a lot of vegetables and shrimp. I love this place so much! Fresh sushi right by the waterfront, what more could you ask for? I also get the miso soup everytime, which is delicious and flavorful. The ambiance is great, especially with the beautiful views of the waterfront. Update: my most recent visit was disappointing. The udon was pretty good (although the seaweed was a bit strong for my taste), but the noodle dish was more onion strips than noodle. The sushi was presentation was a bit sloppy, and the rolls looked wilted. They were flavorless and didn't taste fresh. I ordered the sunshine roll (I think) and a spider role. The tempura in the rolls was soggy, not crisp like I was expecting. Neither I nor my guest wanted to finish the rolls. I'm hoping this was a fluke, not a new standard. I've been to Nanami Cafe twice now, and I've concluded that this is my favorite sushi establishment in Baltimore (albeit definitely not the best sushi I've ever had). The first time, I went for lunch several months ago and was pleasantly surprised by their Sashimi Combo ($22). It came with 5 different types of sashimi (three slices each), and although the fish variety was rather unimpressive (i.e. tuna, salmon, etc.), the fish was fresh and the slices were generous. The second time, I went for dinner with my boyfriend and we decided to indulge in the Chef's Sushi/Sashimi Boat ($80). The presentation and spread was impressive, and we didn't finish the food (perhaps better for 3 people). Once again, the types of fish weren't very interesting and were rather run of the mill, but it definitely satisfied my sushi cravings and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Speaking to my most recent experience, the service was annoyingly slow (two waitresses for the entire establishment). When I first entered the restaurant, it took a while for us to get seated even though there were several empty tables - it even took a while to get acknowledged at all. The food also took a long time to come out, but that was understandable since the order was quite big. Definitely not a cheap establishment but I thought it was worth it to treat myself here and there when I'm really craving sushi. Overall verdict: a bit on the pricier side, but I appreciate that they have relatively fresh, quality cuts of fish and don't just focus on Western rolls. I only come here for lunch during workdays. If you do go to Nanami Cafe, be prepared to be here for a while (1 - 1.5 hours for lunch) because service is pretty slow. I try to avoid the rush hour by coming here when they open at 11:30 AM (Tuesday to Friday). There is a combination box ($12.95) that you can pick one of the following: Chicken/Beef Teriyaki, Chicken/Pork Katsu, Combination of Tempura, 4 pieces of Nigiri Sushi or 6 pieces of Sashimi. This combination box comes with soup, salad, white rice and California roll. It's a pretty good deal for $12.95. I've only tried the combination box for 6 pieces of Sashimi and I feel like the quality of the Sashimi is pretty fresh but nothing amazing. My coworkers and friends have tried the Pork Katsu combination box and Beef Teriyaki combination box. What I've heard from them is that the Pork Katsu is too dry and Beef Teriyaki is too sweet. I noticed recently that there is a Sashimi combination ($13.95) during lunch and this has 8 pieces of Sashimi. This is also served with rice and salad + soup (although I did notice that it's pretty inconsistent, sometimes I get soup & salad and sometimes I don't... depending on the waitress of the day). I feel like for the $1 difference between this Sashimi combination and 6 pieces Sashimi lunch combination box, it's worth it to go with the more expensive option and get 2 more slices of Sashimi. Service here, on the other hand, is incredibly slow. Whether it's busy or not, it ALWAYS (without fail) takes at least 1 hour for lunch. I just don't understand why it takes so long to cut 8 pieces of Sashimi... What makes it even worse is that they take so long to prepare our food but are always in a rush to get us out of there even when the restaurant is empty. Last time, I was still eating my rice and this waitress with glasses comes over and she starts taking my plates away without even asking if I am done! Gasp! Also, they have never explained what the 8 pieces of Sashimi are.... so I still do not know till this day. Not a great service. Nanami Cafe's food is good but not amazing... It is definitely in a prime location, dead center of Fells Point next to V-NO Wine Bar and Pitango Bakery. It's super convenient to grab lunch here during workdays and at a great price too (usually $9.95 - $15.95 for lunch). However, if I have a meeting right after lunch, I can't afford to make time to come to this place due to the slow and inefficient service. read more

Nanami checks all the boxes - really solid food, great service, pretty roomy space, and A+++ location (right next to Pitango in Fell's Point)! I went just the other a day and thought to myself, why don't I come here more!! I got the Nabeyaki Udon and it was delicious - more onion than I'm used to in a typical udon broth but I wasn't mad about it. It was really filling and the perfect thing on a chilly night. They have tons of options for sushi and sashimi, and have larger servings/sushi boats for bigger parties. Overall I think the prices are comparable to other sushi restaurants in town. read more

I really cannot say enough good things about this sushi bar. It is easily some of the best sushi downtown (fells point). The place looks and feels like it was ripped out of a side street in Japan. There are a few kotatsu tables and it looks like some people will wait for them. The staff were all friendly and pleasant. We got so much sushi, one roll shy of it getting brought out on a boat. We're gonna try harder next time. Their Chesapeake Rolls, of which there were three, were all good. The standard California Roll showed off their usage of very fresh ingredients. Sammy found out that she liked eel in the Specialty Shrimp Roll. They have so many options and specials. But, dear readers, my order of the $20 (priciest thing we ordered) Flaming Dragon Roll was almost an event. It came out in a foil tent over salt that is on fire, the smokiness this imparts is amazing. I loved it but this is a heavy, flavorful, drowned in sauce meal all on its own. We came for the sushi boats, and gladly stayed longer for another sushi boat. While the wait time to even place an order and to receive our boats was excruciatingly long, the sushi and sashimi were fresh and tasty. There was a nice variety of sashimi, but the sushi is nothing special (your typical california roll, spicy tuna, the basics). We were surprised a whole fish head came out too which was very cool. Sushi Boat B (the bigger one for an extra $20) is worth the added cost and will fill up a group of 4 easily. If you order wine, they don't skimp on that either! What this place lacks in ambiance and service, it makes up for in the quality of their raw fish and chef aesthetics. The experience: 1) The sushi is fresh, delicious, and full of flavor. I can't say for sure, but their sushi reminds me of the sushi I had in Japan aka the fish is/was never frozen. 2) They have tatami mats! The one where you sit with your shoes off, which I think is an enjoyable and refreshing way to dine, especially if you've never tried it. 3) The sushi chef does a great job with making the sushi look aesthetically appealing. Don't get me wrong, it's nothing ridiculously fancy, but it reminds me of French cuisine, where presentation is not gaudy, but subtle and pleasant. Each piece of a roll looked like it was cut with very delicate precision, and each piece of sashimi was definitely laid out with consideration. Lack of Ambience: My first impression was fairly lackluster. The place does not look unkept, but it could use some remodeling. There are a couple of "signature" Japanese decorations, but otherwise the place looks kind of like my room -- none of the interior décor really "speak" to each other as if everything was bought on an impulse *ahem* (haha, oh well, not like I'm trying to impress anyone here!). There are 3 tatami tables with four seats each -- definitely not an option for large groups. Service: The drinks and food arrived in a timely manner, but the waitress was definitely not in it for the tips. Imagine yourself going to work; you did your job quickly and efficiently, what more can your boss ask for? Well, this is exactly how I felt the service was here. Not amazing, no one smiled, but it was definitely efficient. So, don't come here expecting the kind of service where they anticipate your needs. It was one waitress for the entire place, so yes, at times you will have to flag the waitress down yourself. But once you do, she'll get you what you need no problem! Overall: If you come here, you'll definitely enjoy the sushi! I ordered Chirashi so I could try a variety of their sashimi. I tried the octopus first and it was an eye-opening experience. It was the most tender, melt-in-your-mouth octopus I have ever had (according to yelper Pete F. they must have massaged the octopus a lot!). The rest of the sashimi was equally heavenly! The only item I didn't like was the tamago (Japanese omelette) which was slightly dry. Price/portion-wise, it's not cheap, but the quality of the fish is absolutely amazing. I don't eat sushi, but love tempura. They have a large sushi menu and plenty of other options to choose from. The location is great. It's at the end of a pier with a little outdoor seating area. The inside has a few traditional Japanese tables along the window. I didn't like the tempura. I had the combination of shrimp and vegetables. The vegetables were too thick cut. The batter just fell off when trying to take a bite. It only came with sweet potatoes and one piece of zucchini. The shrimp was ok. The batter didn't stick well to that either. Birthday Sushi! What could be better? My fiance and I decided to get out of Towson and try some new sushi around Baltimore. We've walked up and down the street but have never stopped in. It was his birthday and he was craving some quality sushi. We were the first customers as they opened and had the choice of the popular "shoes off" seating at the window or regular booth-table. We chose the familiar booth table that was comfortable for the three of us. Because it was someone special's birthday, we treated him to the large sushi boats that are on the menu. Sigh, oh Nanami. This place has a lot going for it - waterfront location, promising reviews, wide selection, cool lil sunken seats near the windows... But my friends and I experienced something else, which we can only refer to as the Nanami Incident. We decided to give this place a whirl after seeing a Groupon offer ($40 meal for $20, excluding tax/tip) and the favourable Yelp reviews. The Groupon did not place any restrictions on how many coupons could be used per party and we notified the staff upon arrival that we'd be using the discount. We used the coupon the day after purchase. The food was decent. Nothing spectacular, but not bad as far as Baltimore sushi goes. I ordered my usual nigiri spread (lots of sake, maguro, and hamachi) as well as a side of hotate and unagi. None of the pieces were bad, but it was probably 3-2.5/5 star fish. Some pieces had the slightly irregular texture suggestive of a freeze-thaw cycle, but none fasted dry or old. It's ridiculously hard to find good maguro - even at some three dollar sign Baltimore establishments - so I was willing to give my lacklustre tuna a pass. The service was a little slow, but it appeared to be a slow night and we weren't sure if the kitchen was understaffed. Either way, the ambience was cute and quiet. We finished up our fish and asked for the cheque. The issue came when we presented them with the Groupons. Our server suddenly became adversarial and said that our party (of 3) could only use one coupon. I've worked customer service/retail (and still am to an extent) so I know about coupon woes. However, we had notified the waitstaff upon arrival that we'd be using the codes and the level of rudeness we received was like unlike anything we had experienced in Baltimore before. We showed her the fine print on both our printed coupons and the Groupon website, which did not stipulate a coupon per party limit (only that they were limited to 1 per person). Nevertheless, our server refused to accept each coupon, stating that 3 coupons could not be used for one cheque. "Well the website may say that, but it means one per table," she argued. We showed the waiter examples of other Groupons that stipulated a limit of one per party, to demonstrate that if the Cafe intends such a restriction it ought to be listed. We offered to call Groupon for clarification, which the server abruptly refused. We countered that if we had asked for separate cheques or had dined at the sushi bar, then the cheques would be separate. Still, she refused to split up the cheque. The standoff went on for about 30 more minutes, as she served other tables. Finally, when she saw we were not leaving, she came back and grudgingly said she'd acknowledge 2 of the 3 coupons. We asked to speak with management, which she said she'd do on her own. She went off to attend to more tables and then returned probably another 15 min after that to say she'd accept all 3. We thanked her, and advised her to change Nanami's Groupon fine print if they intended such a restriction. But when we offered the 3 coupons, she returned several minutes later and informed us that they could not be used because we each did not purchase $40 worth of food (I think we had purchased something like $37 of sushi per person?). Aggravated and ready to go home, we said that they could pocket the "profit." She refused. Thus, we asked to be given the remaining $9 in cans of Coke Zero. She returned later with a bunch of Coke Zero, which she wordlessly placed on the table. We pocketed our $9 worth of soda got out of there. tl;dr: food was decent - but the service we received was beyond the pale. I know people will quibble over coupons, but we explicitly made sure to check the fine print and inform the staff upon arrival that we'd be using them. Given the mostly positive reviews I want to assume this was an anomalous event, but I can't give them any higher than a 1 star based on our ridiculous experience. Honestly, I don't know what kind of day the server was having but I can't imagine why she wanted to make more work for herself? read more

Being from California, I thought I could only get great sushi there. Oh how wrong I was. This has the best sushi I may have ever had. I usually don't like the tempura or any of the "crunchy" rolls because they can get really greasy, but my goodness, it was so well done here! I was really craving sushi and also looking at pictures of sushi didn't help. Stumbled upon a living social deal, decided to give this place a try. The restaurants location is a plus, right along the waterfront so there's a nice view while you eat. They have a seating area along the windows where you take off your shoes to sit. Before your meal, you're given a warm towel for your hands. The little details reminds me of Japan! There were two sushi boat options. Ended up getting the more expensive sushi boat which consisted of fattier sashimi, sushi rolls, and seaweed and seafood salads. The presentation was awesome. The sashimi were laid out in the center: tuna, salmon, and escolar. I loved the thick pieces of fatty salmon. All the fish went perfectly well with the hot green tea. Truely a hidden sushi gem in Baltimore, located right next to the Pitango bakery, but for some reason often missed. The restaurant is very cute -- good for dates or causal meet-ups. The seating by the windows is strictly no-shoes as it allows you to experience the more traditional Japanese seating style, with "Zabuton" or floor cushions. Otherwise the rest of the place has normal chairs if you'd prefer that. And the sushi is definitely top-notch, a little on the pricier side but you can be sure you're getting the real deal. They have a huge variety of options, spanning from the classic dragon rolls (which is very aesthetically plated btw) to a diverse selection of fatty tuna (YUM) to even the gotta-try Uni/sea urchin -- the last one I'm personally not a fan of, but I hear it's one of those love it or hate it, so I'd recommend having it at least once. The biggest advantage for Nanami is the waterfront location, in the summer it's a really nice place to relax. However, the quality of the food itself is relatively average in my opinion. We ordered a shrimp udon, and honestly the most enjoyable part was the seaweed (which I liked that it was cut larger than average). However, the fishcake was very rubbery and lower quality than average. We also ordered Ikura and Mackerel, both were less fresh than I'm used to and the Mackerel was more oily than usual. Of the rolls, my favorite was the sashimi roll. The salmon was more fresh than the other fish we ordered. The cucumber was shaved and rolled around ample amounts of salmon and avocado with a wasabi mayo sauce - no rice. We also got a number 5 - scallop and orange. It is a unique combination that I've never seen before, but it doesn't work quite as well as other fruit in sushi. Lastly, we got an Oscar roll, which was a standard fried roll. read more

Nanami Cafe is simply amazing. Thanks to them, I fell in love with Fells Point even more and I found my regular Sushi Spot. It is so easy to overlook this place because the entrance is so humble and almost hidden between the Vino wine bar and the Pirate Ship place but it will be your huge mistake to not try this gem of a place. Starting from their service, to the ambiance, to of course, the FOOD, oh my goodness it was truly exceptional. Lina and Mark were both great and had awesome recommendations. My husband and I went on a Saturday night and they had fresh uni from California and I was a happy gal. We ordered various nigiri pieces, toro, otoro, kampachi, uni, and their Tokyo roll. Everything was so delicious and the sashimi was really fresh. Next time, we are leaving the dogs at home and sitting by the sushi bar inside! Loved this sushi spot! This restaurant has seating by the window that is traditional Japanese seating where you sit on the floor on a pillow and take off your shoes. We decided to sit there and enjoy the gorgeous view of the harbor! Sushi was fresh and delicious. I got a rainbow roll, eel roll, cucumber and avocado roll and shiitake mushroom and avocado roll. To start, the rice of the sushi rolls was squished, old, and hardened (you can see from the pictures attached.) In addition, the rolls were small and had little filling. Whatever little flavor there was from the filling was drenched in mayo and other sauces. The sashimi was also unimpressive in quality and diversity.
