The service is great- but it unfortunately depends on whether the new servers are there who are slow (understandable). I only came here once, because it's so far from where I live, but it left an impression on me and I've been meaning to go back. I'm not a big sushi fan (so this review may be irrelevant to a lot of people reading) but I LOVED their chicken teriyaki dinner box. The sauce was just perfect. The perfect level of sweetness that I have a really hard time finding anywhere. Their miso soup was also amazing and didn't taste generic like a lot of other places do. The food was also served very quickly and their staff is very friendly and attentive. I came here with my brother who is a big sushi fan (always spending hundreds in Manhattan to eat it - I can't understand it, but to each their own) and he commented on the freshness of his sushi here. I've been to this place a few times and I like that the fish is fresh and the place is clean (can't say the same for other places I've been to) The first time was for dinner, I ordered the sushi deluxe, it was filling (though not very traditionally Japanese). The fish was fresh. The second time, I took out for lunch and the tuna in the tuna roll wasn't too fresh, which was odd (the rest of the sushi was fine). The third time was yesterday, I went for lunch. I could not stand the waitress, she smelled :( sigh, it was so pungent and I just wanted her to stop talking to us, she did not take our order fast enough (or so I though because she smelled). What did she smell like? Garlic, no seriously! My fiance's brother once ate a lot of garlic and then he was down in the basement working out on the treadmill - and the whole place just smelled of pungent garlic, and THAT was what she smelled like. Otherwise the service was okay, although we were seated right next to the sushi bar in the furthest table to the back, which happened to be right next to the kitchen window and she stood over my shoulder half the time while I was eating -.-"""" OH- and NEVER order the UDON, especially the shrimp tempura lunch Udon - they give you ONE MEASLY piece of shrimp!!!! I could NOT believe that!!! The shrimp wasn't even big, it was TEENY!!! They give you a few pieces of veggies and call it a day. Completely not worth the 8 bucks. Huge disappointment. The (only) reason this place gets four stars - the fish is fresh and the sushi chefs are clean. The fish portion is hearty so if you don't like taking two bites and you're use to authentic Japanese one bite, you will be disappointed. Making my way through the Sushi places in and around Bayside, I have to say thisplace out-ranks Mickeys. I ordered the same thing for comparison, spicy tuna roll, but this time I asked them if it's chopped, or if it's a slice of tuna, and they said it was the chopped kind. So I asked them to make me a tuna roll, with spicy mayo, inside-out style with the rice on the outside, and it was so gooooood! Soft soft tuna. Really yummy. And you can get single beers to go. This is my favorite Japanese sushi place in Queens since they opened. Though I've tried others in the area, I keep coming back here. Prices are acceptable for the quantity and quality of the type of food. You can't go wrong with the bento boxes, and my favorite are the rolls. The regular rolls are reliable (though inconsistent at times in recent years in terms of quality and size). The Special Rolls are more imaginative, good tasting, though double the price: try the Volcano, Ocean and Caterpillar. Yes, the place is small, but the ambience is subdued and quiet - they way i like it. I found out that they now opened a 2nd spot in Little Neck...will check it out soon.I rate this Mr Wasabi in 2nd place to my all-time favorite, Kotobuki, in Roslyn NY. read more

My parents and I WERE weekly regulars. I had gotten used to minor annoyances that we should not have had to. They never gave us enough soy sauce, gave us too few chop sticks and hardly any napkins. I was fine with those things but they lost me when my father called in advance for a pick-up and when he got their they had not even started to make my meal. He told them to make the meal and he would be right back. He then went outside and when he got back they still had not started making my meal. They said they wanted my father to pay for the food before they made it and they wanted him to wait there while they made it. He left and I am never going back read more

I go here pretty often, mostly for the lunch special. The food is always excellent. The sushi is fresh, delicious, and arranged beautifully. They also have my favorite miso soup of any restaurant in the area. The service is both hospitable and attentive, feeding my green tea addiction quite often ,without me asking and free of charge. The sushi's also pretty reasonably priced, especially when compared to okinawa, mickey's, and the other surrounding restaurants. in my view a sushi place has to meet 5 criteria in this order of importance to be exceptional: 1. Sushi Quality-Taste 2. Sushi Size 3. Creative Menu 4. Price & Value 5. Atmosphere 1. Mr. Wasabi has some of the freshest & best tasting sushi anywhere. 2. Their sushi is always cut in very generous portions, you never feel like they are being cheap. 3. They have tons of very innovative and interesting rolls here. I highly recommend the Bayside roll - it's amazing! 4. Their Sushi Deluxe has miso soup, a full California roll, 10 pieces of sushi with a great variety including two cuts of eel, shrimp, hamachi, and the standards for $14 on the lunch menu. (you can't find that value anywhere else!) 5. Mr. Wasabi is not a fancy place and I wouldn't say it has the nicest interior. However the staff is always very friendly and accommodating so I have no problem letting them slide a little on the interior design. There is nowhere else in Queens or NYC that I have been to that can compare to Mr. Wasabi in all these categories. I used to eat here all the time when I lived in Bayside, now that I live in the city I can't find anywhere that meets this criteria as good as them and I've looked and looked. It's not that there isn't good sushi in the city, there is but, it will cost you twice as much and you won't get the same large cuts of sushi you get here. The owner recently told me that his brother owns a restaurant on the UES called Mr. Ginger, so I'm excited to try it. I've never found the staff to be anything but very accommodating. The place is a bit cramped because the place is small and almost always crowded. But if you're looking for a place to have a fast tasty lunch or a casual dinner, this is your place! There are two other Sushi Places on Bell Blvd. but I think this one gives you the best value for the money when it comes to the quality of the food. Came here for lunch after an interview since bareburger next door to this place wasn't open until 12. Lunch menu starts at 12pm and i got there around 1130. they let us choose from the lunch menu which was great because my friend's chicken teriyaki was $8 compared to $12 its original menu price. 7 piece sushi with a california roll was $10. i dont believe it was worth it because if i went a few blocks down i could've gotten more for my $10 but decided to try the place anyway since we were right there. the sushi wasnt anything amazing, but it wasn't a complete fail either. this place is mediocre. i wouldnt go back tho, we were the only ones there and the people who worked there just seemed to be hovering. read more

I signed up to review this place due to the horrible experience I had here. I went in with my wife to check this place out, and meet another couple, on a Friday evening. We were seated at a table but that's about it. No menus, no water, no one asking us anything. There were a couple of other tables occupied and wait staff walking around but not doing much. We got menus after asking a few times. Ordered some soups and tea to start. It took so long and the soups were cold. It felt like they didn't want our business so I told them we're leaving. Before I could get to the counter the manager? starts yelling at me to pay for the soups. I was walking straight to her (and the cash register). Ridiculous experience.
