The carpaccio had way too much mixed greens under each piece of yellowtail so if you take a slice with the greens you don't taste the fish (yes, you can also eat the yellowtail alone). Went in for lunch this Saturday afternoon. I was the only table in the restaurant, which might explain why service felt... absent. Two waiters were there but having their own lunch. No one ever checked in to ask if everything was okay--not once. I ordered the shoshaku set for two. The sashimi itself was fresh and enjoyable. Tuna slices weren't cut through, but that didn't take away from the quality. What did disappoint: for a $90 set, the wasabi was the cheap pre-made paste, the kind you'd expect at a buffet--not freshly grated, which I'd expect at this price point. The meal started with miso soup and salad. The miso soups were completely different colors--clearly not stirred before pouring. Overall four stars for food quality and two stars for dining experience. Worth trying if you're here for the fish, but they really need to tighten up the service and execution. read more

Staff is pleasant and well mannered. Overall a pleasant experience. My only concern for not giving a five star review is their miso soup is on the thin side, meaning lack of miso paste. 3.25 When you've visited a restaurant several times over the past few years, they must be doing something right. Whether it's the food, service, ambiance, or all of the above, something keeps drawing you back. This is how my wife and I felt about Shoshaku. However, during my last few visits, things have changed. If I had reviewed this place years ago, it would have received a 4.5 rating. Unfortunately, these days, I can only give it a 3.25. On the positive side, the pricing is definitely a highlight here. Their specialty rolls are reasonably priced, with almost all of them under $20 each. Some of the good ones we had this time included the Middle Neck Roll and the Outside the Box. The Geso Karrage (fried squid) and the Chicken Nanban (chicken nuggets) were fried and seasoned well. However, there were several issues this time around. Many of the drinks on their menu were unavailable. I can understand this happening once, but multiple offerings were not readily accessible. The veggie chips served with the Holy Grenade were so stale that they smelled terrible. When we informed the server, she smelled them and immediately apologized. This was an easy call to avoid serving. When they brought out new chips, it was clear they had simply opened a new bag. The Spicy Naruto wasn't spicy at all and seemed poorly rolled, as it immediately unraveled. One of my favorite dishes in the past, the Creamy Mentai Udon, was a bit under-seasoned (perhaps due to a lack of roe), and the poached egg was overcooked. The final straw was that the two servers seemed quite disorganized. When we asked for our check, they appeared to have completely forgotten and we waited about 10 more minutes before we were able to receive our check. I hope Shoshaku addresses some of these issues. Worst Japanese restaurant! I decided to try this place because of their good reviews. We ordered Sashimi and Sushi Combo and Oyako Don. Considering its price I did not expect to have high top notch quality, however I never had such a dry sushi rice in my life. Sashimi looked like they sliced the chunk of fish from the market. They need to hire a decent chef who at least knows how to handle raw fish. Their Oyako Don was just dry mixture of mushroom and egg on top of the rice. They do not know how to make Donburi for sure. On top of this, I had to ask for new cup because it was not washed properly. This place seriously needs to get inspected. Never going back. read more

Prepared well enough but bland and noodle dish was flavorless. They tasted just like every other rolls and noodles we've had. There was nothing overtly bad about the food or service other than racid tasting chips that were served with our appetizer but we walked away without a single memory or experience that would bring us back. In a way the blandness of Shoshaku makes it more disappointing than if it had been outright terrible. A truly bad restaurant where maybe the decor is ridiculous, the food is poorly cooked in a way that is almost humorous or the service is wildly unpredictable - at least that gives you something to talk about. Sometimes bad is better than mediocre. The next time you end up in a restaurant that forgets and misses spectacularly... at least it wasn't blandly forgettable. read more

Just visited for the second time today while in the area. Solid place, solid food, amazing prices (especially for the lunch special, pictured). While not particularly memorable experiences both times, this is a good place if you're craving sushi and want a place that will do the job, or are looking for a place that's quiet. Service is pretty laid back, so you need to be a little patient (at during weekdays in the middle of the day). Just nudge the staff if you need to pay quicker or have questions. I made reservations for my family to have our Mother's Day lunch here at 1pm. We were a few minutes late but seated right away! We noticed around 1:30pm, a lot more people started coming in and before we knew it, all the tables were filled. The restaurant is a lot smaller than I initially thought it would be; I think they can seat ~30 people in the whole restaurant so I could see there being a wait on a busy day We ordered 2 appetizers. The Hamachi Kama was really good, my first time having it! Super crispy, but the fish was still tender inside. A lot of other tables also ordered this. We also got the fried calamari which was okay. Good but a little small. For entrees, we got the Shoshaku Set for 2, one Same Old roll and a Gyudon for my brother since he doesn't eat sashimi. You get a soup AND salad for each entrée (the set and gyudon) so we ended up getting 3 soups and 3 salads, which we shared amongst the 4 of us. The gyudon came out first- very little beef but a lottt of rice. The flavor was good but I don't think I'd get this again. The ratio is very off! Needed probably double the amount of beef and could do with less rice too. The service was a little slower because they were really busy! We finally got our sushi. The set was really good, I didn't have any bad pieces and everything seemed really fresh. For dessert, we opted for the Yuzu cheesecake, green tea tiramisu and green tea crepe cake. I would pass on the desserts next time and go elsewhere. Both green tea desserts were frozen hard in some places making it difficult to eat with our plastic spoons. We ordered take-out for two 3 rolls, which came with salad and miso soup - $15 each, and a Creamy Mentai Udon (outside of the special) - $15. I love sushi rice, and the chef did not portion the rice in a way that would overpower the roll. I was pleasantly surprised by how generous they were with the fish and filling. - Alaska roll was pretty standard, however, it did not have any roe on top and the salmon wasn't as sweet as I would have liked. 3/5 - Yellowtail roll and eel avocado rolls were delicious. No complaints. 5/5 - Spicy tuna and spicy salmon were good, however, I could not tell the difference between the two based on looks or taste. 4/5 Creamy Mentai Udon was creamy and flavorful. I would order this again, however, I have to deduct a point because the poached egg ended up being boiled and there was only a pinch of fish roe on the top. 4/5 Overall, we would definitely visit Shoshaku again to try out more dishes because the lunch special is a great deal. This is a great middle ground location between Queens (and Brooklyn) and Long Island. Parking: There are municipal parking lots on the side streets and street parking (25 cents per 30 minutes). We made reservations, thinking the restaurant would be crowded, and it wasn't because it was a dreary day. This restaurant was cozy and comfortable. The employees were polite and attentive with the tea cups constantly refilled without being asked and food was served quickly. Most importantly the fish was fresh. This explains why there were quite a bit of take out orders. New place in Great Neck to try! Came here with a friend and did not need a reservation on a weeknight. We shared the tofu, seaweed salad, and edamame to start, and I got miso soup as well. They were okay, but the soup was so thin and barely had any tofu and no kelp, so it didn't turn out to be the comforting soup I was craving. I got a cooked roll, the Outside the Box, which is snow crab, avocado, and mango inside, rock shrimp on top, soy paper. I really wanted to like it, but it was so tasteless and boring. It was like a middle schooler made it for a cooking class. I did not like it that much, but I was so hungry that I forwent the taste and ate it. I will say that the waitress was really on top of things and we got our items quickly, which was appreciated. This is certainly one of the best sushi spots I have ever eaten at. I've tried some very popular sushi spots in Manhattan as well and this little sushi spot in Great Neck trumps almost all of them. My buddy & I are frequent visitors here & for good reason. The sushi quality here is VERY fresh. Everything from the salmon sashimi, pieces of yellowtail, red snapper, and tuna - every raw fish we tried was very good. This restaurant also does a good job of not serving so much rice with each sushi piece. This place definitely does not skimp with how much fish they give you per piece. A quaint intimate space in Great Neck. Good for small groups and date night diners too. The waitress my group of four had, was very attentive at refilling our tea and water throughout the evening. The tuna avocado ball with roe was really good, served with what looks like Terra brand veggie chips. Great presentation of ingredients. Creative spin on the guac and chips. The serving spoon is even pretty; shaped like a cross but has a perfect scoop size. It's the perfect appetizer to whatever you're eating next. Entrees: I measure every Sushi joint by ordering their Sashimi and uni (sea urchin). The sashimi was beautifully plated and each piece stood out on its own. The favorite on my plate being the salmon. The portion was perfect for one and if you're a small eater, you can probably share this entree as it comes with soup and house salad (must try the sesame dressing!!). The uni sushi pieces I ordered a la carte were only ok. Not worth the mention - tasted fine just wasn't memorable. The Food: 4.5 out of 5 I would highly recommend the Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar), which has a nice salty and lightly-charred taste to it, with tender white fish meat inside. I also enjoyed the Sushi/sashimi platters that has a variety of different options and can easily be shared by multiple people. The Yakiudon was made very well, with a creamy white sauce that had great flavor. The special roll 1980's was decent, but not my favorite. They also provide complimentary miso soup and salad as an appetizer. The Service: 3 out of 5 We didn't get a great feel from the servers during our second visit. The waitress wasn't in the best mood and was pretty curt throughout our meal. I don't remember our first visit to be like this, but hopefully it was just an off day.
