The food, the service and ambiance is incredible here at Kotobuki Roslyn! It is so clean here and is busy at all times, even a Tuesday night at 8:30pm! The rock shrimp is perfectly crispy and lies on top of potato chips drizzled in spicy mayo. It was so fabulous! The gyoza were delicious as well. I can't remember the name of any of the rolls... but what I can tell you is the fish here is unbelievably fresh. Every roll we got had a unique flavor to it that blows all other sushi joints away. We also got an order of chicken teriyaki I forgot to snap a picture of that was so good and juicy. Our waitress, Fun, was so friendly, attentive and sweet. She was laughing with us all evening! We had a great time and the food was amazing! Can't wait to come back!

Service takes forever. A good place to hang at if you are meeting friends and intend to stay and chat for a long time, good decor and vibe but expect to wait 45-1 hour for your entree to come out.

Carpaccio was very good!! A++ BUT Yakitori wasn't... its just dry chicken breast and very small flimsy piece of negi(green onion) smothered with teriyaki sauce. No smokey or char flavor at all.

Kotobuki is located in Roslyn and it is so close to the little town near the lake. My friend and I visited on a Friday night without reservations and we were able to snag one of the last tables without having to wait. If you have a larger party, you'll probably want to make a reservation ahead of time. The service overall was fine; the food came out at a decent pace. Their cocktails were pretty good - not too sweet and was strong enough. They started us off with this cold soba as a little appetizer and it was refreshing. For actual appetizers, we started with the Tatsuta-Age and Grilled Squid. The Tatsuta-Age had a nice crisp to it, but felt like it was lacking flavor. The Grilled Squid came out on a sizzling platter with a bunch of veggies stir-fried, which I was not expecting. This dish was also lacking some flavor, but had more than the Tatsuta-age. As for the sashimi, it was fresh and was cut into decent sized pieces. Their rolls were creative and delicious as well. For the prices, the food is pretty good here.

Updated: on Sept 13,2025 visited restaurant again because the last time I enjoyed dining at restaurant. To my surprise it was the worse experience I had. I invited a number of friends and my son to eat because the last time really enjoyed with our server Hanna. When we arrived and sat down, the waiter took our order and server named Hong L, demeanor was very rude during our eating, that my guests were very upset. We had order drinks and it took over 10 minutes because he was attending another customer at another table who came after us. We order appetizers prior to the other customers who came after us too, and they came late as well too. I even asked for extra napkins and he never brought over, the petite young lady from the register brought for us the napkins as we were eating right away. Mr. Hong, (Server) was not friendly or tentative at all and never bothered to come over to see if we needed anything. Another issue was the food we order were not the greatest or tasteful. The drinks order were ok , which my guests enjoyed. The beef negimaki appetizer was a little dried and not tasty. The worse part of this server was that he put two separate orders on same plate, 2 Red Dragon. My guest had the plate and was eating thinking it was his order. I waited like 5 minutes and questioned server who said it was served, I said I didn't received and he said it was on my guest plate. I said in whose right mind would do this and what was more disturbing, he took my guess plate and separated and put the other portion on another plate for me to eat. This type of behavior is uncalled for and this sever should not be working there. In the end he just dropped the bill which I paid over $238 on the table like throwing us out and never asking if we needed anything else or say thank you. When I gave him cash tip he did not even say thank you. As a business owner and someone who is a foodie, I would not have him working. This type of behavior is uncalled for in any business. Mind you , I been to this restaurant many times as well and enjoyed their hospitality and caring by their servers. That is why I changed the rating. (see pictures below I added for the above date)

3.5 overall Parking lot in front, shared with other stores and restaurants. No problem parking close to the restaurant. The restaurant itself has plenty of tables. However, even though I arrived a little after they opened and there were already several tables filled. It filled up towards the end of our meal, with lots of takeout orders going out, so I recommend getting there on the early side. Service was great. They came by to refill water and tea, and cleared any plates that were done. The Complimentary Glass Noodles has a bit of kick. Nice little appetizer while waiting for the entrees. The Sushi and Sashimi For 1 is huge! Better to share with someone else and add in an appetizer or another roll. There is a variety of fish in different forms - sashimi, carpaccio, nigiri, and rolls. Everything tasted fresh. The Crazy Roll (Tuna) was generous in the amount of fish. Nice little hint of kick from the spicy mayo. The Green Tea Ice Cream had a decent green tea flavor, not too strong. If you're in the area and craving some sushi, this is a good spot to check out.

My favorite Japanese restaurant with amazing sushi platters and oysters that melt in my mouth. Service is always top notch and the restaurant is impeccable. They have been here for over 25 years and have a line of authentic sushi chefs. There is plenty of free parking in front and outdoor dining in their flowering garden. The inside of the restaurant is equally attractive, we were transported to Kyoto. We started with miso soup and the house salad. Then the oyster appetizer in garlic butter came out, and the belly Toro tuna. Four of us shared the sushi platter for three and had enough to bring home. Everything was so beautiful, fresh and delicious, truly an exceptional Japanese meal. We weren't rushed; we sat for hours and really enjoyed.

I finally came for a sit-down dinner. I saw that they don't take reservations and the few times I've been in the area for other restaurants, they always seem to be busy with lines out the door. My fiancé and I came on a Monday night, about half an hour after opening and were seated right away. They also didn't seem too busy that night, but it was also raining. I read mixed reviews on the service here but the service we received was great. Upon seating, we were given hot towels, some hot green tea, and a small plate of cold noodles. We ordered a bottle of sake and the sushi and sashimi special for 2 ($88). It's served with miso soup, a salad, and 4 fried oysters (which was yummy). The sushi and sashimi special for 2 was definitely a good value - 20 pieces of sashimi (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, fluke), 4 pieces of salmon carpaccio (chunks of cooked salmon in a wasabi mayo sauce), 10 pieces of sushi (tuna, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp, eel), a rainbow roll, a UFO roll, a shogun roll, an elevated salmon roll, and another roll with eel and tamago. I believe the selection of fish may change from time to time depending on the chef's choice but this is what we got when we ordered. We both really enjoyed the carpaccio. The quality of the fish was also surprisingly good, better than most of the Japanese restaurants around Long Island. The menu also has a great selection of appetizers, unique rolls, and hot foods. I already can't wait to come back to try some of the other items on the menu!

Everything delicious. Really great food. The crispy rice with avocado melted in your mouth. 5/5 The Yellowtail sashimi was excellent. The Grinch Roll was superb. Super delicious and will order again. Spicy tuna, yellow tail avocado + more. 5/5 The steak is always so good. Juicy and tender. Comes with white rice. Enough for 2 people. 5/5 See y'all soon!

This restaurant is one of my go to places for a nice sit down Japanese restaurant I'd go to for special occasions or just a casual group dinner. They have pretty great and fresh fish. The portions are huge. We love getting the set combos because they are so worth it for the money. It's a great value and we always have food leftover. We love trying new items from the menu and try the fusion options available. They're usually quite delicious. This restaurant also can get busy I'd recommend groups to make reservations ahead of time, if possible. Sometimes it can be hard to get a seat. This restaurant is located in a plaza where there's tons of free parking available.

Not much more to say that hasn't been covered by other Yelpers. We were a table of four, maybe we got lucky in timing, a four top was available within reason. About 20 minutes into our meal, there was a huge holding pen of people, as if they were at a club behind a velvet rope trying to get in. It was a noisy crowd and people just looked frustrated. Do they not take reservations? Wouldn't that clear up some of those issues? Beyond that, the dining room is very nice. There's what resembles hinoki exposed natural wood, purely decorative, gives a nice touch and something to admire. The tables and chairs also go for that minimalist style. Service was very good, and patient as I was really indecisive. We ended up ordering all the things that looked good, and they all were very good. This tuna/kani pizza thing was especially good. The rolls are almost too crazy to even make a decision on. Everything we ordered was very good. I ended up doing the sashimi, made it deluxe which adds a couple things that I'm not sure I needed (some cooked salmon thing, spiced, and creamed, which didn't seem to belong). And they tuck away a naruto roll hidden under the lettuce garnish - a little secret discovery. The sashimi was spot on, rich, flavorful, deep in color, especially the tuna - it was special - not light red or flimsy. The scene here is interesting - people watchers would really enjoy the characters. Would come back for sure if I needed a change from the ush place closer to home.

We started with an espresso martini, which was excellent--smooth, well-balanced, and a great way to kick off the meal. My husband and I each took a few sips before I remembered to snap a photo--always a good sign. For appetizers, the wasabi rock shrimp and spicy tuna crispy rice were both standouts--fresh, flavorful, and nicely executed with great texture. We also ordered the 10 piece nigiri flight, which was consistently impressive. The fish tasted fresh across the board, with the uni being a highlight--rich, creamy, and exceptionally fresh. The shrimp tempura roll was delicious--crispy and well-balanced. The only dish that didn't quite land for us was the ebi hamachi futomaki. It wasn't bad, just not a favorite for my husband--I only remembered to take a photo when we were nearly finished. From the kitchen, we shared the black cod and sea bass--both outstanding. Tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked--definite highlights of the meal. For dessert, we shared the peach cobbler, which was a great finish. Warm peaches with hints of bourbon and cinnamon, paired with Japanese vanilla ice cream--comforting and well-balanced. Service was warm throughout, and the quality of the food was evident in nearly every dish. While it leans toward the higher end in price, the overall experience fell just shy of a full five stars--but was nevertheless very enjoyable.

Would recommend their spicy tuna roll appetizer (the sushi rolls are the best things here!). I got the braised short rib as my main. Ended with the banana wonton dessert! It only comes with 1 wonton, but the best part is the lychee sorbet and banana cream it comes with. Very yummy (and a small dessert but good enough to end the meal!) Overall, stick to the sushi! Get their drinks! Had the coconut and lychee cocktail which was super yummy. Large list of drinks compared to the food. It was also a little bit hectic hailing down the waitstaff for help, but it was a very busy weekend night. I ordered a couple of rolls. The East House roll was very nice, though I didn't expect from the description that the roll would not be wrapped in nori but in that clear-ish yubu skin situation. I wasn't mad about it, the presentation was beautiful. All of the fish felt very clean and not too strong or fishy tasting. I also had a spicy tuna roll which was good but not really spicy or tuna-y enough for my preferences. The sushi rice layers were nicely thin so that I didn't feel overstuffed with rice afterwards. Someone from my table ordered the hot udon as it was a cold and drizzly day outside. They felt the flavor was bland. It looked fairly bland and disappointing. Miso soup was also bland, though it was generously portioned. The shrimp teriyaki was overcooked. I do think this is a nice elevated environment, and as long as you're getting something from the sushi bar. It's a bit pricey, but you're getting pretty decent quality fish.

The rock shrimp was battered and lightly fried served with yuzu creamy spicy aioli sauce. The mushroom salad was refreshing and the rock shrimp flavor was great. We also ordered a bottle of Mio sparkling sake. I've always enjoyed this sake so I had to order it when I saw it on the menu. It is light, fruity, and slightly sweet. I ordered the Shaggy Dog Roll which had shrimp tempura inside, topped with crab meat, crunch, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. Very yummy and savored every bite. For dessert, I had the matcha cheesecake and I enjoyed it very much. The matcha cheesecake was packed with matcha flavor and it was creamy and luscious. The portion was smaller than the fried cheesecake and the fried ice cream that my friends got, but that was totally okay since the matcha cheesecake was so rich. Umami Sushi and Grill was the perfect place for my friends and I to catch up. Service was wonderful and we stayed at the restaurant for about 3 hours. The staff were attentive and still filled our water/hot tea. Definitely worth checking out.
