    Big eye tuna tarts
    Jennifer R.

UPDATE! I returned to Okaru last night with a friend after my initial sub-par experience. This experience knocked it out if the park! It was definitely similar to my BONDST experience and easily 5 stars! Upon arrival my friend and I were seated immediately and even had a table/booth in the bar area instead of the table top we initially reserved. The wait staff was attentive all evening, and our waiter took the time to check on us and offer suggestions and explanations- very helpful. The food was outstanding- I don't normally eat fully raw sushi and found the tuna tarts and sashimi fresh, beautifully prepared, and delicious. Everything that followed was equally fresh, delicious, and beautiful. Our cocktails were tasty (Okaru Spritz and Zen & Fizz) and the desserts insanely delicious (Japanese Whiskey Bread Pudding and Chocolate Meltdown). I'd like to give the GM, Robert, a lot of credit and a big thank you. After my first visit he personally made sure that my next dining experience was a much better one... and it was definitely a complete 180. Everything was excellent this time around. It's clear that truly cares about guest satisfaction and expects a high level of service from his staff. I can't wait to return again soon!!!

We went here for a casual dinner only to walk in and realize this is a much fancier spot. Stayed anyway and probably looked way underdressed but oh well We ordered sushi, crispy tuna rice & shishito peppers. Ofcourse the quality was top notch as you'd expect from a place like this. The ambience and service was superb and the food tasted great as well

Okaru - Modern Japanese with serious finesse (and presentation that slays) Okaru is officially one of my new favorite spots in the area -- the kind of place where every dish comes out looking like it belongs in a magazine spread, but still tastes even better than it looks. Tuna Tostadas A must-order. Paper-thin tuna draped over the crispiest tortilla, topped with microgreens and a touch of seasoning that lets the fish shine. Light, clean, and completely addictive. The little origami crane on the board was the cutest touch -- details matter, and Okaru gets that. Crispy Shrimp Perfectly fried, super juicy, and tossed in a creamy spicy sauce that hits all the right notes. Paired with a bright frisée salad for contrast -- elite-level balance. Spicy Crispy Rice One of the better versions I've had. The rice is crispy without being oily, topped with spicy tuna, sliced jalapeño, and just enough heat to keep things interesting. Every bite is crunchy, spicy, and satisfying. Handroll + Sushi Plate This plate was STUNNING. The handrolls were generously filled -- one packed with spicy tuna + greens, another with a fresh, clean-tasting mix of fish and herbs. The rolls around the plate were beautifully prepared: * A spicy tuna roll with that signature bright orange sauce * A chive-covered roll topped with perfect little dots of spicy mayo The whole presentation made it feel like a chef's tasting board. Cocktails Ended the night with a lychee cocktail and an espresso martini. Both excellent -- balanced, not overly sweet, and made with care. Overall Okaru nails it: gorgeous plating, fresh fish, great drinks, and a warm, modern atmosphere. It's the kind of spot you bring friends to impress or sneak away for a nice date night. Already planning my next visit.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! from the aesthetics, the food, the cocktails and the service, Okaru definitely exceeded my expectations. It's great for a date night or bigger groups. We came here for my birthday celebration and I couldn't have been happier. Everything we ordered-cocktails, appetizers, entrees and desserts were all 10/10! For appetizers we ordered and I definitely recommend to order as well- ceviche tacos, tuna tarts, yellowtail sashimi and crab crispy rice. Wow that tuna tart was a fav but as well as the rest. The waiter recommended the chilean sea bass for me and it did not disappoint. As per cocktails must order lady O Martini, it reminded me of the pornstar martini and it was incredible! Okaru definitely now on my top 5 best restaurants on Long Island.

My husband and I ate here for our anniversary last Saturday night. It was highly recommended by a friend and didn't disappoint. It's located in a historical building in Roslyn. We opted to eat outside as the weather was beautiful. Our waiter was very attentive but for sure was trying to upsell us on the menu. Stated we should order 4 dishes each. We didn't listen and were glad we didn't because we were full off of what we ordered. For an appetizer, we ordered the King Salmon sashimi. It was incredible. I can't wait to go back and eat it again. Probably the best salmon sashimi I have ever had. It was really refreshing too. My husband enjoyed it as well. For a main dish, my husband ordered two sushi rolls and miso soup. He really enjoyed them. One was yellow tail chili and the other spicy tuna. I also ordered the miso soup. Although it was good, it was not the best I have had and I probably wouldn't eat it again. For my main, I ordered the sea team sushi and the yellowtail sashimi. Both were so delicious and I highly recommend. The fish was really fresh. We ordered sake as well, which was refreshing. Next time I would try the tasting menu or one of the cooked fishes as a main course. Will for sure be back. It's pricey, so be prepared to go for a special occasion. For desert, we had shaved ice with fresh fruit. Was also refreshing and a good low calorie option.

Incredible high quality modern Japanese food that would be just as welcome in Manhattan. We tried the tasting menu which comprised of numerous courses (of which I lost count). The restaurant itself is beautiful inside - some sort of sleep Scandinavian/Japanese fusion aesthetic. Has the birdcage thingy that some high end Asian joints are doing which looks great. Some of the memorable dishes: Tuna Tart with shaved truffles - works really well, crisp and savory. Kumamoto oyster with uni and sriracha spheres - very good, a bit cacaphonic but tasty. Seared scallop with a cauliflower creme curry and some sort of dashi espuma - not sure if I'm identifying this correctly but was delicious, the cauliflower highlighting the sweetness of the scallop, beautiful presentation as well. Seared tuna with foie gras - this was actually amazing, surprised that it worked at all. The combines served with a berry jam (with some sort of other fruit, maybe umeboshi?), sunflower seeds, and some sort of stewed daikon/turnip. Sashimi course - lost track, red snapper with some sort of tomato water and salsa, Hamachi with with something pickled, seared mackerel, salmon with ikura and a yuzu reduction, tuna with seaweed and cucumbers with dashi. Sushi course - 6 pieces overall, seared char, botan shrimp with caviar, also toro/fatty tuna. The fatty tuna was a standout. Strip Steak - with a potato pave with like a hundred layers like Thomas Keller's recipe. The teriyaki sauce was amazing. Dessert - 3 courses: the Japanese Whiskey bread pudding, citrus kakigori, mochi, and a cotton candy. All amazing but the kakigori was stand out, sweet and refreshing to balance out the initial acidity pucker. Beautiful looking too. Service was attentive, only complaint was that the tasting menu pacing was slow - we were eating for over 3 hours. Value wise - very expensive meal. But there are many similarly expensive meals in the area which I think are mostly tiktok pandering trash, or expensive just for the sake of expense which I feel is commonplace on LI. I actually think the tasting menu at $195 pp is a reasonable value within the economy of its own menu - for two people the value of the included dishes on their own would be more than $450, plus there are some things provided that are somewhat more elaborate versions of the stuff on the menu. Will likely reserve the tasting menu for special occasions but certainly will return. Finally they were surprisingly child friendly - had high chairs, crayons and cute sushi coloring pages. My kid loved the tuna tarte in particular.

We came for Sunday brunch. The food was good and came in a reasonable time frame. Service was a little slow, as we were unable to order drink refills for 15 min or more. The hand rolls were delicious, particularly the yellow tail and the Hokkaido scallop and uni. My wife and I shared the Wagyu steak and eggs, as well as the mushroom omelette. The yuzu soufflé for dessert was light and delicious. We will definitely come back for a future meal, perhaps to try the omakase.

What an experience! Impressive ambiance, fabulous attentive table service and the food was to die for. My family took me there for my birthday and I had a great time all around.

I have a wonderful group of close friends who have very informed palates and an interest to meet regularly to discuss how we can save the world! When one calls and says "we need to go to this restaurant because I was able to get a reservation" ...I stop and say "Yes"... Even if it is at a god awful 5:30pm early bird time slot. I was told "we have to go. These don't become available very easily." Well, my cynical self went with a stomach that wasn't ready to eat. I entered the doorway and found myself walking into a different world. It was like I was in a hip Tokyo restaurant. Service was nothing short of superb (thank you, Mateo!!)- attentive without being overbearing...Thoughtful and knowledgeable. Providing recommendations and getting Chef Marc input. Every dish was amazing- you could tell the ingredients were of the highest quality and prepared with creativity and care. The delivery and presentation were well-executed, creatively tasteful and well-appointed. Thank you, Chef Marc Spitzer! (I thanked my friend who commandeered the reservation too - not easy!!)

Okaru was a great spot in Roslyn. We begun at the bar where the bartenders were great and attentive. Drinks were very good. When we moved to the table in the dining room, the birthday card was waiting on the table. We tried the tasting menu with Sake pairing, but first, we had is West Coast oysters, which is my favorite and l rare on East Coast. Lol Each course was better than the last in the tasting menu. We loved the promptness to our requests and great ambience. Since we had a late reservation for diner, we had to be hasty, but the experience was still very good.

This is LI's newest Japanese hotspot! This is a new restaurant that opened about a month ago and the place was packed with people. It's so hard to get a reservation here...I literally made mine a month ago. It has those NYC vibes without having to travel all the way into the city. The chef here is from Bond St and he brought over some of those dishes to here. I came here with 3 friends for dinner for my birthday. We had a little bit of everything on the menu. The big eye tuna tarts and miso cod were a hit at our table. But everything we had was amazing! My friends are so happy there is finally a good sushi restaurant on LI and they are already planning to go back. This restaurant is highly recommended and I am looking forward to watching their success in LI.

Okaru - Japanese --on Long Island , is giving very much city vibes . The ambiance is very chic and minimalist. My absolute favorite dish was the miso glazed bone marrow - excellent. The broiled lobster was my second fav . Service was attentive. The crowd was definitely Gold Coast Long Island , if you know , you know

Celebrating Family Wins at Okaru - A Trendy Spot With Ups and Downs We recently celebrated some big academic milestones for our kids, along with our son landing his first job -- a proud parent moment! To mark the occasion, we made a 5:00 PM reservation at Okaru, one of the island's buzziest new restaurants. Reservation & Arrival A heads-up for anyone booking: Okaru requires a credit card to hold your reservation, and if you cancel within 24 hours, there's a $35 per person charge. Personally, I don't mind this policy. It helps reduce last-minute cancellations and gives other diners a fair shot at a table. Valet parking was a plus -- quick and smooth, especially in such a busy area. The doors opened promptly at 5, and we were seated right away. The host was efficient, and our server, Bryant, was friendly and helpful (though he did seem a bit nervous). Ambience The restaurant is beautifully designed -- sleek, modern, and thoughtfully decorated. However, be warned: it's very loud inside. It was difficult to hold a conversation even with someone sitting just across the table. A simple tweak, like lowering the bass on their sound system, could significantly enhance the overall experience. Drinks * Tap Water Tip: Be sure to specify tap water. We were served a $9 bottle of still water by default -- not a big deal, but a bit annoying if you're not expecting it. * Lychee Martini - Sounded better than it tasted. A bit funky and not as sweet as described. 3/10 * Paper Crane - Refreshing and beautifully balanced. Hubby loved it. 9/10 * Lychee on the Run (Mocktail) - Too similar to my martini and far too funky for the kids. 1/10 * Lady 0 w/ Sake Sidecar - Redemption! Smooth, complex, and delicious. Worth the $30 splurge. 10/10 Food Highlights We sampled a wide range of dishes, including several specials. Here's what stood out: Appetizers * Foie Gras & Akamai Special - Gorgeous presentation, rich flavor, and perfectly balanced. 10/10 * Bluefin Crab Squash Flower - Lovely, but be cautious--filling can spill into the sauce. 9/10 * Tuna Crispy Rice - Crunchy, light, and a crowd-pleaser. 10/10 * Crispy Brussel Sprouts - Not crispy, but still flavorful. 7/10 * Toro Tartare with Caviar - Excellent quality but very small for the price. 10/10 * Chicken Katsu Steamed Bun - Flavorful and more generously portioned. 8/10 * Mushroom Gohan Rice - A hearty vegetarian option, mixed tableside. 8/10 Sushi & Rolls * Hokkaido Scallop Uni Handroll - Light, tasty, but wish it were larger. 9/10 * Eel Avocado Roll - Disappointingly bland and lacked the expected smokiness. 3/10 * Spicy King Crab Roll - Underwhelming, surprisingly bland. 3/10 * Spicy Tuna Roll - Not very spicy and lacked depth or texture. 5/10 * Bluefin Tuna Roll - Best of the rolls, but still had a mushy texture inside. While the individual sushi pieces were very good -- properly cut, served at the right temperature -- the rolls overall were a letdown, with similar textures and flavors blending into an indistinct mush. Mains * Whole Broiled Lobster - Perfectly cooked and flavorful with a lovely miso butter. Unfortunately, they didn't pack all the shells when we took it home, which was a disappointment as we planned to extract the leftover meat. 7/10 Dessert We tried a selection of desserts and were pleasantly surprised: * Summer Berries Kakigori - Light, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. A standout. * Green Tea Mille Crepe - Delicate and delicious, with great balance. * Banana Tarte Tatin & Mochi - Both enjoyable, but not as memorable as the first two. Overall Impression: 7/10 Okaru is a beautiful, trendy restaurant with some standout dishes and great attention to presentation. It's ideal for a celebratory night out or if you're looking to try somewhere new and buzzy. However, with a bill exceeding $700, you expect not just good food but a more consistent, elevated experience -- especially with basics like rolls and sound levels falling short. Would I return? Possibly, but not in a hurry. There are other spots on the island offering better food, better acoustics, and better value. That said, Okaru is still worth trying at least once -- especially for the ambiance and the chance to explore creative dishes like their foie gras special or mushroom gohan.

My first impression of the place was that it was beautiful inside and the lounge area was very cosy with a fireplace and couches. There's a bar area and seating both upstairs and downstairs on the main dining level. We were seated upstairs where it felt a bit cramped as they had placed 7 seats around one circular table. I had sat in the chair with the back to the wall and it was a tight fit and I could barely move my chair. The other tables were placed very close together and I could hear the nearby tables' conversations with how loud the noise level was. It was a busy Sunday afternoon and my family and I were starving and ready to order, but we experienced a bit of a wait since our server was attending to other tables. The waiter was friendly but the delay was noticeable. Now onto the food, overall it was average with some hits and misses. I highly recommend the fried calamari and Mac and cheese as appetizers. Both were very delicious. For drinks, I ordered the cold blooded margarita and loved it so much. I ordered the salmon eggs Benedict but found the hollandaise sauce to be a bit too salty. There was a mix up with my order so while everyone else received their meals I had to wait a while for my order to be corrected. I was disappointed with the portion size of the home fries as it was quite small and barely had any potatoes. My mom ordered the steak and eggs and she liked how perfectly seasoned the steak was. Overall, service could be better and I'm willing to give the food another chance. There is also both valet parking and street parking available.

Good thing that the complimentary bread with olive oil is gluten free, dairy free, and soy free. I had Mussels Pots, Branzino, Assorted Fresh Fruit, and a cappuccino with almond milk. Others had something else, which I had no interest in remembering. We would come back again and highly recommend you check out this place if you are in Roslyn.

To celebrate Valentine's Day, my wife and I enjoyed a $38 three-course prix fixe lunch. Although…read morethe public parking lot was full, we managed to find a spot for $2 for two hours. The restaurant, Gatsby's Landing, draws its name from the romantic nostalgia of The Great Gatsby. Situated near the Long Island Sound and Roslyn Pond, the setting offered a beautiful waterfront ambiance. My wife opted for the Baby Roasted Beets Salad, Salmon, and Crème Brûlée, while I chose the Lobster Bisque, Squid Ink Tonnarelli, and Tiramisu. The menu highlights their commitment to fresh, organic, and locally sourced ingredients - a promise they certainly delivered on. The dishes were both delicious and generously portioned. It was clear the kitchen doesn't skimp on quality; for instance, the lobster bisque was loaded with tender lobster meat, the squid ink tonnarelli featured an abundance of blue crab, and the salmon was a substantial, thick-cut fillet. The chef clearly possesses a mastery of technique, knowing exactly how to pair garnishes and balance flavors in perfect harmony. Furthermore, the waitstaff was both diligent and courteous. We can see why this establishment is so popular--the combination of exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and the serene lake views is hard to beat. However, there is one area for improvement: the restaurant should consider replacing their current chipped plates with larger, more elegant dinnerware. High-quality presentation would better reflect the dignity and caliber of the food they serve.
