Good place for drinks and sushi! Came for the lunch prix fixe ($37) and it was pretty worth it for the amount of food you get! Would recommend their spicy tuna roll appetizer (the sushi rolls are the best things here!). I got the braised short rib as my main. It was a tasty first few bites, but became a bit dry once you ran out of sauce (especially since it's a lean cut). The peanut noodles that it came with were alright. Ended with the banana wonton dessert! It only comes with 1 wonton, but the best part is the lychee sorbet and banana cream it comes with. Very yummy (and a small dessert but good enough to end the meal!) Overall, stick to the sushi! Get their drinks! Had the coconut and lychee cocktail which was super yummy. I've been to this spot three times. The first time was over four years ago, and I had a great experience. Unfortunately, my last two visits haven't been nearly as good. This review is based on my most recent visit. You know when you're craving a particular dish and can almost taste it before it arrives, only for it to be nothing like you expected? That's exactly how I felt about the scallion ginger lobster. It had absolutely no flavor. This is usually a dish that's packed with flavor, but instead it tasted like boiled lobster water poured over lobster shells. Very disappointing. The fried rice was decent, although a little light on seasoning. I could have done without the fried omelet on top, but that's just my personal preference. The Peking duck was good, but I've honestly had better at my local spot for a lot less money. The flavors were stronger, the portions were larger, and the overall value was much better. The tempura roll was just okay. There wasn't enough shrimp, and it felt underwhelming for the price. The biggest disappointment of the night was the short rib. It was not good at all. The peanut flavor completely overpowered the noodles that came with the dish, making it difficult to enjoy. I really wanted to love this place. I don't mind spending money when the food, service, and overall experience justify the price. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. The bill was far too high for the level of service and flavors we received. TOKU is located in a beautiful location in Manhasset, Long Island. You step inside and it's just as beautiful as you would expect. The food was very delicious and flavorful, and the overall presentation was perfect. Each meal looked like works of art ready for consumption. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. However, we thought the place was very crowded. It was clear that they placed as many tables as they could without trying to take away from the aesthetics. It was also so loud that you couldn't really hear yourself talk. My other problem was that though the staff was very kind and attentive, it did feel as if they were rushing us out, in order to sit another party, which was very frustrating because it felt like you couldn't really enjoy the food. It was our first night out in awhile and the experience felt rushed and underwhelming, unfortunately, despite the food being so good. This is actually one of the worst restaurants I've been to in a long time. Let me start off though by saying, the wait staff did a great job and there is no one to blame on their part. This is fully blaming the ones running the restaurant. The food quality is horrible. I had ordered two sushi rolls, the tuna pizza, and crispy rice to start. It's all mediocre, the quality of this fish isn't good, it's prepared and assembled very poorly. For example, the sushi pizza is an attempt to copy the dish that Bond St / Okaru does, except they do it horribly here. The bread is hard and crummy, raw onions throw the whole thing off and the flavor of the sauce is wack. I've had better crispy rice and rolls from other local less expensive spots. For our mains, I ordered the wagyu, and they gave me a NY strip. Total rip off, and trust me it wasn't an accident, the waiter clearly stated what he had served was the wagyu. We also got a noodle entree with chicken that was so bland and unseasoned, we didn't even eat it. The waiter was shocked, and when we told him it was bad he just took it away ( no it wasn't taken off the bill either) This restaurant is honestly trash, you're better off going quite literally anywhere else. Came here for a nice lunch, frequent here a few times a year. Absolutely love the crispy rice, it's quite possibly my favorite out there. The kung pao chicken, beef, and fried rice all blend together so well. It made for an amazing meal. The service really goes back and forth here sometimes it's amazing sometimes it's eh. Started with the Handcut Toku Fries, Kimchee Chinese Broccoli, and the Wok Bok Choy & Shiitake Mushrooms. I enjoyed the Toku Fries and thought the others were okay. The fries came with a wasabi aioli dipping sauce, but I preferred a plain old ketchup with it instead. I ordered the Braised Short Ribs for my main couse. Service was friendly and attentive, which set a great tone for the afternoon. What surprised and disappointed me right away was that rice isn't included with entrees. It's a separate charge. That felt a little off for a place in this price range. We ordered quite a bit to sample the menu. We asked for the appetizers and the entrée to be served at the same time. We ordered Lobster Tacos, Rock Shrimp Tempura, Soft Omelette Shrimp Fried Rice, Pacific King Roll, Tenderloin Beef & Broccoli as well as Handcut Toku Fries. To drink, I had the Lychee Martini, delicious and strong. I only needed one and sipped it slowly since I felt a buzz almost instantly. Not sure if it was that good or if I was just really hungry . My friend had the Virgin Pineapple Martini and enjoyed it as well. Food wise was a bit of a rollercoaster. The Pacific King Roll tasted good, but it only came with 6 pieces. My friend was disappointed and said she wouldn't get it again. The Lobster Tacos were tasty but more of a tease than a meal, "just a tickle," as she put it. The Toku Fries didn't live up to the hype for me, they were just okay. The Beef & Broccoli was a generous portion, and the beef was tender, but the flavor didn't quite hit. Honestly, I've had better from a neighborhood spot like Chinitos. Now for the highlight, the Soft Omelette Shrimp Fried Rice. It was a total standout. Rest of our entrees were a variety of average quality asian fusion attempts and basic salad jumbles. You certainly expect more for the prices being charged. Maybe they think this is the kind of food that fits the high-end surrounding luxury stores. First Impression - Chaos & Disorientation Entrance - Beautiful and Understandable why they have double door entry ways separated due to the loudness of the restaurant. Should be listed more so as a pub, the noise, the befuddling at the bar, landscape of restaurant doesn't meet the needs of its location or the fact that they don't utilize the space properly. Upon entry, you walk through the first doorway, then to enter another doorway and then to be placed smack in the restaurant to get to the host. The host should be somewhere in the wall between doors of prior to entry to the actual restaurant - real estate in the restaurant is too precious for them to take up space there. I was expecting to be greeted, but no smile upon approach, not even an offer to be brought a drink or escorted to bar area to get one while we waited. In addition, there was NO seating for waiting patrons which isn't a must; but seeing you have so much entryway that's not utilized well, I'd suggest one or two benches or even coat check. Seating at dining - space definitely needed to be reviewed on a design approach. I believe when the restaurant is empty and they view the space the layout looks superb. But no diner should feel the brush of employees and patrons against them as they sit and dine. The spaces between tables is ridiculous, not only is it stupendous; but once seated I realized the reason the music is so loud. It's due to the fact that if it isn't, you'd hear the person at the table next to you eat! I felt bad for the couple next to me, felt like my butt was in their face as I maneuvered to take my seat! Ambience - ever heard of dulling one sense to improve the other. I couldn't take in the reaturant's decorations or full fledged design elements since it was overwhelmed with patrons, which in itself a good thing, but the beauty of a space along with its smells, disarms you to be more relaxed and enjoy your meal. This location arms your senses and not in a good way. I automatically didn't have any regard for the food due to overstimulation; sight and sound. I ordered 2 drinks to quiet the noise. You had to shout at your table, so the other person could hear you. Tsk tsk Drinks - Loved every one of them I had. Especially the Mango Jalapeño (had 2 of these). I've been here two times and both times were great. I absolutely love the espresso martini's and the foos choices I've made have been good. I like the king crab tempura it's light and really tasty. I also really liked the fried rice with an egg on top it was really good. I've had a few other dishes I'm definitely coming back within the next two weeks I need my espresso fix. Service is good everyone works together I haven't had an issue if it's busy I am understanding of them not being able to come to the table right away. Their pork buns weren't exactly what we were expecting but they were very good (Braised pork with some vegetable in a bao). The crispy rice with spicy tuna was nothing special but enjoyed. The eel avocado roll didn't quite hit the spot but was good quality. Our nigiri were all great with the highlight being the chutoro. The wagyu frites was the perfect portion and presented a fairly unique steak experience. The ice cream was really the finishing highlight with the black sesame being delicious. If you're just a regular person, they sit you at a table next to the kitchen doors, then make you wait 45 minutes after your reservation for another set of uneven tables pushed together - while Franklin whisks regulars to the best tables after a hello and handshake without even checking the reservation. Of course that's the restaurant's prerogative. I've got my regular spots, and this ain't one. It doesn't feel good to get short shrift. Food was not as good, menu items were hit or miss. We started with a spicy salmon roll which was far more memorable than the usual standard, and the spicy tuna crispy rice, served w the rice still warm and toasty. For entrees, the fried whole snapper was a major standout. Absolutely huge but meaty, not at all greasy or over cooked -- one of the best whole fish we've had ever, and with an addictive sauce. Wagyu steak frites was unimpeachable but less unusual. We will definitely be back, and fish is the way to go here, clearly! The sushi was good enough that we'd eat only that and be happy. The menu had a little of everything - mixed Asian fare. Think Jap Chae, Sushi, and Wagyu Beef. Skewers and Carpaccio. Dumplings and Salads. Just lots to choose from. Onto the food: we didn't care for the octopus Carpaccio. Too much soy sauce on the bottom. Overpowered the taste. Nicely cut, thin slices but each bite was a tad chewy. The crispy fried onions gave it texture but didn't help offset the salty soy sauce base. Entrees were good: duck breast (a little fatty but good color and tender). We ordered it medium. Plated with lettuce and string beans. Heavy on the sauce. The Wagyu steak frites was a nice complete entree where it's paired with square cut fries, side salad and thinly sliced wagyu beef. It was lightly seasoned but again, a little too much sauce. And it's on the sweeter side. Still very good but just be aware. I also tried the sea Urchin since my original choice was sea scallops but they were out. However, it was unfortunate by the end of the night, I received some immature and racist comment from two busboys saying "Ni Hao" to me and laughing.
