This spot is basically take out. If I was judging this place solely on their sushi offerings I would probably be a 2 stars. Its not a place I would go to regularly to order sushi, maki, sashimi, etc.. It comes with weird almost florescent green wasabi, the pieces are heavily riced so its not particular the best tasting. On the other hand if you are a value shopper where cheap prices are all that matter then this place may be the one for you - they are pretty reasonably priced. Why 4 stars? Simply it is because of the Shrimp Tempura Udon noodle soup. Don't get me wrong - this isn't some high end udon option, but the price is the most reasonable in the area and the broth has a particular flavor. It is subtly sweet and light with flavor from the bok choy, seaweed and cabbage in the soup. Perhaps it is dashi based, but whatever it is its my low end comfort food choice. The tempura comes with various veges and 3 shrimp. It is best to order directly from the restaurant if you are in the area - that will give you the best price. They also have this party platter for about $30 that gets you a special roll & 7 regular rolls of your choice which is a ridiculously awesome deal. They also always let me substitute cucumber with avocado in rolls, which I appreciate because there are other places give you a problem. Luckily I don't deal with that because I am in a committed relationship with this place. Delivery guy is always friendly and polite!! I normally wouldn't order from places with ratings this low, but I was on GrubHub, which is full of fake reviews (everything is 4+/5), and I forgot to check Yelp. I'd say New Tokyo lives up to its current 3/5 Yelp rating. The chicken kara-age was OK. Not crispy, though not soggy. It tasted like hours-old, reheated fried chicken. The Japanese wonton soup broth tasted fine, but the wonton wrappers were rubbery and the fillings fell out of every one of them. The rolls tasted OK, with some anomalies. The Philadelphia roll was slightly sweeter than normal. The spicy salmon roll was inconsistent. One of the pieces had a strong wasabi flavor to it. Some other pieces tasted normal. One of the pieces wasn't spicy. They packed one small container of soy sauce, which was only enough for one roll. They also packed a small container of eel sauce. The eel sauce was sweeter than normal, and even a small amount overpowered every other flavor. I'm not sure what it pairs with, but it didn't go well with anything I ordered. The palate-cleanser ginger slices, like the Philadelphia roll and the eel sauce, was strangely sweet. Delivery was on time (10 minutes late). read more

I used to live in this neighborhood when I was in college. At the time, the building complex that this quick-eatin' sushi spot resides in was still being built. I have since moved back to the neighborhood (Can't you tell I loved school that much...?) and decided to try out New Tokyo. As the previous reviewer said, it's a small spot. And don't go in expecting a whole lot of fan-fare. It's sparse, with about four eat-in tables. Realistically, this is a take-out joint, which serves the need I have for it. Having a car is a godsend. I'm not going to say that it's the best sushi spot I've ever had. And you can easily see that they don't take hours preparing each roll. I wanted a sushi fix, and I wanted it fast. They delivered. I've had the Spicy Dragon Roll, and some other one that I'm failing to remember. Nevertheless, I wasn't disappointed. For a neighborhood sushi spot in Jamaica/Flushing, that's quick on service, cheap on prices, and hits the spot, I can't think of a better option. Awesome, awesome place for lunch, especially takeout. My favorite lunch special is #5, which has 6 pieces of spicy tuna roll, 2 pieces of salmon nigiri, and 1 piece of shrimp nigiri. All the lunch specials come with miso soup and a salad. The lunch special comes out to $7.90 after tax which I think is a steal, especially in this part of queens (umi lunch special comes out to like $12, same about of food.) I have never gotten sick from this place, and I've been here quite a few times. I really like the fish:rice proportion here, and the sushi is a perfect single bite. New Tokyo also does the best spicy tuna imo, because it is actually spicy unlike a lot of other places. I love the deep red color of the fish- some people might be put off by that but I think that's what makes it so good and spicy. There's no fishy taste to the salmon, and the shrimp is standard. I like the salad dressing as well, it has a nice kick from the ginger and it's not too sweet. I wish the lettuce was in smaller pieces though. Edit: bought a bunch of food for takeout with my friends for a late night study session. We got the party platter A, 2 fish over rice bowls, a few extra rolls, and Kani salad. The party platter A is a great deal honestly - you get 7 rolls and 1 special roll for a little over 30 dollars. When you split this between a few people it's such a steal honestly. The 2 fish rice bowls we got were a chirashi and a sake don (salmon only). The chirashi was a bit sad looking and I probably wouldn't get it again. There's only a few slices of fish (I don't count the egg or the crab meat), and while it is cheap at $12, I'd rather get rolls next time. Also I was not a fan of the egg- it was super grainy and weird. I normally love tamago but this was no bueno. The miso soups were super watery, and the salad only had a few pieces of lettuce. The Kani salad was a bit underwhelming too. I would say stick to the rolls because they're pretty good. As usual, the spicy tuna was great, as was the salmon avocado and tuna avocado rolls.
