Updated review based on my experience in person and through takeout. I usually go and order a salmon don which is salmon sashimi over vinegared rice, and the portions are huge for a reasonable price. Generally the slices are nice and thick and there's plenty of rice, but when I ordered this as take out, they gave me much less rice which I didn't expect. I'd also say that they're happy hour is very generous and they have a decent variety of drinks like plum wine and beers. This place can get very busy and it can be difficult to flag down staff. It would be nice if they had one of those buzzing buttons that you could use to call the staff. Overall, still my favorite place to eat at in person. We stopped into Bamboo Ya on Austin Street after helping my son get his internet set up at his place. My wife had heard good things and we had been craving sushi for a while, so we took a stroll over and gave it a shot. I went with my usual order -- a spider roll and spicy tuna -- and both were solid. I tried a third roll as well but honestly cannot remember what it was, and it did not leave much of an impression either way. The first two though were good enough to bring me back. The highlight of the visit was honestly our server. She was cool, spunky, and had a great sense of humor. A solid sushi spot that was giving the calm before the storm. Just a bit a way from Forest Hills Stadium and up Austin St. lies Bamboo Ya. It's a cute sushi spot that has an ample amount of seating which makes for the perfect pre-concert dinner spot. It wasn't super crowded and we were able to sit in the back dining area. We started with some yuzu sake and shumai. Super yummy. This sake was chilled which was a nice touch because it was on the sweet side. Then we split a few rolls. Yellowtail jalapeño is always so simple but usually one of my favs. We were then sent over our duck roll. Another classic and very tasty. We topped it off with the Esther Roll and the Sexy Salmon Roll. Both were very good but the Sexy Salmon roll was my fav. The mango was such a nice touch. They have all the standard rolls that you'd expect, all well balanced and served neatly. The takoyaki is also a great option for warm appetizers. They were good but wasn't the best I've ever had. The fish was fresh, no fishy smell or taste, and just the right amount of rice around the seaweed. The avocado added an element of creaminess that complemented the soft fish. The rice was a touch hard, however. The service was good. The waitress was attentive. Very, very sad that I have to leave this review but this was such a horrible experience. For history, I have been patronizing Bamboo Ya for many years, mostly the Rego Park location. I recently started ordering from the Forest Hills location. The food was mostly good (not better than the Rego location) but it was fine! We have ordered solely from Bamboo Ya for sushi. My order was an a la carte toro (a very expensive piece of sushi), a salmon avocado roll, and a spicy tuna roll. When we received it, I noticed how off-color it looked--it was purplish gray, definitely not the normal color of toro. The spicy tuna tasted off. The salmon avocado roll was good. My husband called Bamboo Ya to ask about the color of the toro, only to be told that the sushi chef said the color was fine and that it came from a 'different part of toro,' whatever that means. He said it was fine to eat. My husband took a bite; it was very, very fishy and the taste was bad. We called again from my husband's number three times and was ignored. When I called from my number, they magically answered the phone. To be frank the rep was very rude and kept saying he was 'trying to help us out' when we were telling him about his rotten fish that he kept insisting was fresh. He kept offering the toro. I told him he shouldn't be serving this to customers. The rep yelled about the fish being fresh and eventually hung up on us because he said he was busy and that we were to get nothing. I am so scared that me and my husband are going to fall ill because of this place. I recorded the call just in case we do get sick. I am sorry that I will not be patronizing any Bamboo Ya location again. read more

This newer Bamboo Ya location is very nice and pretty spacious. Made reservations for a Saturday evening and was sat down immediately. Their menu was quite extensive; they had so many options for you to choose from. They also have Happy Hour every day that ends at 7pm, even on weekends, so that was a plus. The service was fine, but nothing amazing. The food was pretty good and the sashimi was fresh. To start off, we got the BBQ Squid, Rock Shrimp, and Hamachi Kama. The squid was grilled quite well; it had a great texture and the flavors were there. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered a second one later on. I would skip on the Rock Shrimp because I felt like I was eating batter more than actual shrimp. The Hamachi Kama was delicious and was not on the dry side. We then ordered 3 rolls - Futo Maki Roll, Kani Salad Roll, and Black Widow Roll - and they were pretty good. We then ordered a Sashimi Deluxe, Yellowtail Jalapeno, and Cajun Salmon Carpaccio. All the raw fish were fresh and the pieces were a good size. The overall food quality is fresh and there wasn't anything that I was completely dissatisfied about. Came here for happy hour which is very good. That being said, they have no idea what they are doing here. They have a sign that lists one thing, their menu lists another, and then what the server charged us was a third thing. Here is what I think the breakdown of the happy hour is after arguing with the server: - 3PM to 7PM every day - $4 beers - $5 wines - $5 wells - $6 margs and mojitos - $7 for all other cocktails That being said, the service was also not good. We were sitting outside, so I'm not sure if that was the issue, but they rarely checked on us, and when we asked for things, stuff was either missing and would take a very long time to come back out to us. The food here was decent, but nothing special. Because of that, if you are coming for just food, would probably pass on this place. The happy hour though is nice since it is every day and a pretty good deal. For that, it might be worth it to deal with the service. read more

Bamboo Ya you had me at "free delivery". On a mission to satisfy my sushi craving I ordered the "Any Three Rolls" Lunch Special and a Kani Salad. I was sad that they didn't have spring rolls. If they did my life would've been complete. For the sushi lunch special I ordered the Ginza Roll (cooked salmon and tempura), Shrimp Tempura Roll, and the Spicy Kani Roll. The sushi was super fresh and rolled neatly. The sushi rice was on the thin side which was a plus for me. The Kani salad was out of this world delish. They didn't skimp on the Kani. Everything in the salad was julienned which made it so much easier to enjoy. I wish that the eel sauce was less sweet and on the thicker side. Also the chopsticks are of the cheap variety and way too tiny for my liking. Now I'm no pro when it comes to using chopsticks, but I can find my way around a meal with them. If they were longer the chopsticks would be more manageable. 1/4/21/ I stand corrected, BambooYa offers Spring Rolls which are located under "Vegetable Appetizers" as Vegetable Haramaki . Love bamboo ya! I've been ordering for delivery/pickup throughout the summer and now whenever i have sushi cravings. Their sushi are always fresh and you know they're good when the rolls are more filling/fish than rice! They have limited outdoor seating, but it's usually pretty full for dinner so i always end up ordering to go. They also have a lunch special available which a garden salad and carrot/ginger dressing. there's also a special lunch special, you can pay a couple bucks more and they will include spring rolls and california rolls to your set. Always wanted to try this spot, and this time I went for the Party Platter D -- was craving rolls, and this platter had exactly that. There were 10 rolls: California, tuna, Boston, salmon avocado, eel cucumber, spicy tuna, alaskan, salmon, futomaki, and avocado cucumber roll. For $45.95, it wasn't a bad deal, but the avocado cucumber roll was not worth it. My bad for not going through each roll closely. My friends and I chose this spot mainly because they have intimate booths, we had just gotten some tragic news and wanted a calm, cozy place to eat and comfort each other. Unfortunately our waitress was on the abrasive side, telling us to hurry up because it was slow, and when it's slow they close early. I never like when a restaurant does that, and they way it was communicated sucked, but stuff like that isn't exactly unusual at certain restaurants so whatever, draw your own conclusions. Their wonton soup is delicious and full of extra goodies: corn, snow peas, carrots, broccoli, and mushroom. I ordered the spicy salmon on a fried wonton with scallion, tobiko, and crunch. This was probably my favorite item of the night, I love the crunch of the wonton contrasting with the smoothness of the salmon. Total flavor bomb. I also ordered their raw tuna dumplings: raw tuna stuffed with avocado and formed into the shape of a dumpling. I thought this was good, the tuna was delicious, but I think the overall texture of everything is too mushy, they need to add something crunchy or with more substance to the avocado. They lightly drizzle a wasabi sauce over the dish, but I also thought that this was too mild. The kani salad is mostly cucumber, so I would skip that.
