Celebrated my good friend's birthday tonight at Bamboo Ya and the food was delicious. We started with the avocado salad and ginger dressing, fresh and tasty! There are so many unique sushi choices that it is always hard to choose.The sushi was super fresh, light and satisfying! We shared the "A Roll" and the "Rainbow Roll", both delicious and tasted like MORE! The ambiance is cozy, clean and comfortable. The staff here genuinely cares about their guests. BAM! BAM! BOO-YAH! (I just wanted to channel my inner Emeril Lagasse) The businesses along Austin St are usually bustling with activity all week long, but on a Sunday night at this end of the commercial strip, it's pretty quiet. There are even some good parking spots right out front. A few families are seated at the streetside tables, but since it was getting cool outside, I wanted to sit inside, where there are a scattering of couples enjoying their dinners. The hostess says to grab any table we would like. We're given paper takeout menus, but if you like flashy pictures in your menu, scan the QR code on the table. Of course, there are plenty of choices of special sushi rolls, but I like my bento boxes for the variety of foods you get on one plate. Plus I like having my food served neatly in a sectional lacquered box that looks like the floor plan of my house! In the den is the salad, the California Roll in the kitchen, wasabi & pickled ginger in the bathroom, rice in the foyer, Gyoza in the living room (with dipping sauce in the hall closet) and Chicken Yakitori in the bedroom. The chicken was tender breast meat skewered on bamboo sticks, grilled with slices of onion and peppers on a bed of vegetables and slathered in sauce. You have a choice in decorating the living room with either Gyoza, Shumai or Spring Rolls. And you get 6 dumplings (or 3 Rolls), while everywhere else you're lucky to get 1,2-3 or any at all. I almost forgot about the miso soup for the backyard hot tub. The miso soup was actually very good with a lot of seaweed and tofu cubes in every spoonful. My wife got her usual Sashimi Regular with 15 slice combo of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and white tuna. The fresh slices of fish were even served in a cute clear plastic boat. We also got a Paradise Roll to share, though we couldn't finish it. The crunchy shrimp tempura surrounded by avocado, spicy salmon, seared white tuna and yellowtail with spicy mayo was a tasty combination. The leftovers were even good for lunch the next day with my California Roll. Service was very good, with food being served timely and our server kept tabs on us without being intrusive. My only complaint was that our rice was a little stale and hard, but that is probably because of a slow Sunday night and poor timing scraping the bottom of the rice cooker. I am a huge fan of Bamboo Ya, I really enjoyed going to the Rego Park location because that's where they started off. I went there for years. Now they expanded and have 2 locations, the one in Rego Park and this location in Forest Hills. The quality and tastiness of the sushi is still the same. The staff members are friendly and service is fast. Once you have one bite you can't stop because it's just that good. My favorites are the spicy salmon and spicy kani roll. I would totally come back to this location when I am craving for some quality sushi. read more

The price can be a bit much, especially the bento boxes, but worth it! They give you a ton of appetizers and enough teriyaki to fill you up. I was wary of this place, given its name, but was recommended it by my boss who I trust has very good taste (he lives in Flushing), so decided to give it a try with Seamless. I was pretty impressed with the quality at first bite. In fact I liked it so much I made a 2nd order immediately after for my husband who was on his way home. (Sorry to the delivery guy who had to come all the way to my apartment twice!) I then decided to come in-person with a friend last week and we were both impressed even more! The raw fish was really fresh and the prices were pretty reasonable (we both spent under $25 each including tip and tax) for 2 special rolls and 2 regular rolls - total of 28 nice sized pieces). The sushi rice seems well seasoned (not just plain white rice) and the seaweed they use for the rolls is higher quality than any sushi place I've been to in Forest Hills so far (and I've been to almost all of them). I have never eaten inside the restaurant, only takeout. And each time I order shrimp tempura to go, my craving is satisfied and I'm super happy! But come to think about it we were paying for the veggies and slice cucumbers instead of the meat itself and the bun for it wasn't even cooked. The sweet potato she had was discolored when she took a bite into it. So that's a definitely NO GOOD... Her vegetarian udon had no soup flavor. Talk about redeeming themselves ... Okay. So I am nothing, if not a reasonable man. And, the other night Jayson and I were looking for a place to grab dinner, and I said, "let's give Bamboo Ya another try." And wow, I'm moving them up from a two-star nightmare, to a four (almost five -star) rave. I believe Jayson said he's actually upping his very dissatisfied review also, but he's going right to five stars. So, it was late and we'd been shopping, and he had a long day ahead, we had light bites. I had the Tuna appetizer. It was so fresh,, and served perfectly. I was doubting my choice until arrived. It was perfect. I also had vegetables. Beyond delish. Jayson had the shrimp and asparagus. Again, just perfect, and seasoned right. He also had the shrimp shumai, a face of his. I have been eating here since they open and was shocked I didn't already have a review. This is my second home when I forget to pack lunch. I have tried everything off of the lunch menu but my favorite it the Salad dressing. They make the top notch salad but that dressing is out of this world. I always ordered take out but inside the restaurant is always clean. They have outside seating which consist of seats on the sidewalk and now since COVID the seating area that's in the street. I'm not sure what you call that. Customer Service is A++++++++. They must have called ID because as soon as they pick up they say are you having the usual. And when they see me walking by if I don't call, as soon I walk in they say it's almost ready. I love customer service like that. I am a frequent diner of the Bamboo Ya in Rego Park so was very excited to see this location pop up. It is beautiful inside and very nicely decorated. Was greeted immediately by the host and placed my take out order right away. Food was prepped in good time. Extremely friendly service! Already would return just due to how nice they were. The sushi was very fresh and large pieces for the roll. I like that they used minimal rice - my biggest gripe about sushi spots and this place got it right. Eel avocado, spicy salmon, salmon, salmon avocado, alaskan were all good portions and very fresh fish. No complaints from me and the hubby. The chicken katsu was like any other place. Salad is good and fresh. Their dressing is lighter than other spots which makes you feel guilt free. All this totalled $50. Gulp. Yup $50! There is a big difference in pricing with the Rego Park location. Most items were 50 cents up to $2 more than the Rego Park location. A bit frustrating but guessing it pays for rent in Forest Hills. So I was here on Friday for a quick drink at the bar. I met the Manager, Franky and he is super nice. Today I went for dinner with my wife. Franky greeted us and Putri was once again our waitress. We had our usual appetizers and added Fried Rice with Chicken. It was excellent, actually, everything was excellent. I love this place! Lunch before an appointment in my former hood Forest Hills, Queens summons my appetite for Japanese Bento Box. At first impression this business appears very quiet and empty after lunch rush hour of 2:29 pm, but the quality of food is mediocre. Customer service is average. Japanese matcha green tea is not offered upon being seated, but cold water is provided... at least offer green tea to customers! Business cards and takeout menus are available for grabs. B3. Pork Katsu lunch box special $11.95 One large ball of rice, California roll, shumai, choice of soup or salad. The sushi rolls were not solid as upon pickup using chopsticks it broke apart and fallen onto my Bento Box tray. The shumai was average. The rice is average Carolina, but not Jasmine. The pork was immensely dry hard and way overcooked. The Panko bread crumbs dried out the pork as it way overcooked and the pork was very hard. The pork tasted like eating a rock. It was very bland despite of applying Japanese curry sauce. It was hard to intake this entree. The salad dressing was a mayo dressing and the green appears similar to kale lettuce as I always prefer regular lettuce. I am enamored with traditional Japanese ginger dressing, but this business do not use. I agree with a previous Yelper that their soy sauce is very diluted with water embedded (or possibly they don't use Kikkoman). read more

Went to Bamboo ya for dinner towards the end of summer on a Friday night and I'm so glad I discovered them through Yelp. The sushi is excellent. We got a few special rolls and one regular and we were served in this really cute bamboo boat. The service was great and our server was a very friendly, professional and a very warm person. I've been here way too many times to count because my mom loves this place. I'm not too sure why because I think it's just okay at best. If you do come here, the hot appetizers are probably the best on the menu. I like the boneless teriyaki wings and chicken negisaki. For me the pork buns here are not tender and not well flavored. The tempura is just okay; there is a bit too much tempura flour that is sloppily battered. The sushi is ok. I would say that it's hard to mess up on soft shell crab. All the services with the food and waitress to the atmosphere is absolutely terrible. It's like they can't make up their mind whether they want to be a sushi restaurant or a bar/club. They have the traditional seatings where you take off your shoes to sit down but then in the same area they have a bar playing loud music and people screaming every 30 seconds. The atmosphere gave me a whole headache. People were dancing in the middle of nowhere and it was loud and obnoxious. Then you have the waitress who talks extremely informal - "you good?" I didn't know I was talking to a random friend/stranger. We ordered a bunch of food but instead of serving a decent amount each time, they keep stuffing our whole entire order to our faces. 2-3 dishes every minute. Even when our table was full, they keep stuffing us food. At one point, she was looking at us as if we needed to hurry up and finish the food that they served 2 minutes ago! Then she kept handing us food like we work there and is supposed to hold the food without hands as we eat or until we finish. This happened MULTIPLE TIMES throughout the entire meal. The food itself was mediocre at best. The sashimi still has a frozen taste and the vegetable inside the udon was not fresh at all. It was yellowing. It's overpriced and they justify the charge of the food by simply adding avocado to everything while the main point of it - the sushi - wasn't even fresh or good. Not to mention, I saw a waitress serving sushi without her mask on. I would definitely not come here again. Ever. read more
