Surprised this place doesn't have a higher rating. This is the best sushi spot within a ten mile radius. Dining in at Sushi Koi feels like the loading screen of a video game, if that makes sense. It's a place to rest, relax, and recollect from the hustle and bustle of life in the city. And the sushi is so good you'll forget you're dining on a traffic heavy major boulevard for just a moment. So far I've had the Philadelphia, chicken tempura, crab meat tempura, and salmon avocado rolls from here. The Philly rolls have only the lox and cream cheese in them, which made me realize how unnecessary cucumber or avocado is in a roll that should only have the good stuff in it anyways. But my absolute favorite is the Negihamachi roll, made up of yellowtail and scallion. I have never had yellowtail until I came here, and that fish has the best damn bite, flavor and texture of any undersea creature I have had the pleasure of consuming. The service is great as well. The front of house consists of one kind lady who make sure your experience is always to your liking. I don't think I can go anywhere else for lunch anymore - this spot is something else. This restaurant is only a couple blocks from the Kew Gardens courthouse so coming here for lunch is convenient. I came here for the Combo Box Lunch special one afternoon which is $13.95 on the menu. For this, I got a Miso soup, a small serving of Chicken Teriyaki with 3 pieces of gyoza, 6 pieces of California roll, a small salad and a serving of white rice. All of this together makes for a good, diverse lunch. I did not order any sushi/sashimi separately as a main course entree on my visit here so I cannot speak as to the other reviews rating the fish in the sushi offered here. The inside of the restaurant was pretty empty during lunch and it seemed like only one person was staffing (enough for us) so even though it's a bit small, this place is good for small groups to gather for a nice, reasonably-priced meal. read more

I have to say Sushi Koi is not one of the top cheap sushi spots in Queens nor is it the most inviting place to dine. I come here only when I am craving sushi and in a rush to get home from work. It's a block away from the E/F train on Union Tpke station. The restaurant is usually pretty dimly lit and empty. Almost every time I come, it's on a weeknight and there are kids (assuming the owners kids) doing homework or riding a small bike around the restaurant. Definitely feel like they could use a renovation here. The fish is alright though, but I always question how fresh it is since it's never busy in here. We decided to give Sushi Koi another chance. We placed an order for pick up and were told it would be ready in 10 minutes. We walked in in 15 minutes and still had to wait another 15 minutes but at least it was made in front of our eyes. We had the Three Hero Roll, Red Dragon roll, one tuna/avocado hand-roll and two miso soups. The soup was delicious, not too salty, good amount of tofu and seaweed. Very flavorful. This was the worst sushi I ever had. I ordered the 3 roll special, which was very inexpensive-- but the Alaska roll has the smallest pieces of salmon, and it was smoked salmon. The eel cucumber roll was super sweet. The soy sauce they provided was extremely salty and the wasabi they gave tasted like green dye. The red clams and octopus are off-color (YES! off-color) and looked like they've seen better days. The tamago did not look and taste like tamago. The one that takes the cake is the sea urchin. It smelled and tasted so bad, it's like they left it out underneath the sun to rot for a few days. I went here for lunch to mix things up from the usual deli and pizza on Queens Blvd. Overall it was a bit below my average for a Japanese restaurant. I got a hot green tea and I believe it was gen ma cha rice-flavored green tea. Pretty tasty. Got katsudon. The lunch meal comes with either soup or salad, and I got the soup -- a fairly flavorless miso with little tofu cubes and seaweed. It tasted like the instant kind that comes in a packet. I like the seating -- wood benches with a cushion and pillows. The tableware is attractive and simple. The tea came in a mug that was a thin cylinder without handle and calligraphy on it. The earthenware black soy sauce dispenser was pretty cool. Then highlight of table was sushi menu, illustrated by hand with colored pencils and featuring little cartoon dragons and crabs. They depicts the specialty rolls like the Tuna Tataki X (seaweed salad and crunchies inside, and pepper seared tuna with scallion and ponzu sauce outside) and the pizza roll (crab, avocado and cucumber inside, and cheese and special sauce outside then grilled). The service is fast. My katsudon came with tons of veggies beyond the usual onions; carrots, peas, mushrooms and cabbage were thrown in. I could have done without the soggy cabbage and I'm not a mushroom fan, but the diversity was appreciated in a dish that can be too samey. It was too salty for me however, and I'm typically someone who needs to dump a ton of soy sauce on what I'm eating. The lunch special was 10 bucks including a tip. This spot is close to my job so I generally come for lunch during the week. At this time there is usually just one woman taking all the orders, bringing out the food and taking payments. She's fast, but if the restaurant is crowded, there will be a wait. The prices are reasonable, especially the lunch specials and the food comes out quickly. It's good sushi. I usually get the three roll combo that comes with a soup or salad. Some of my co-workers get the bento boxes and say they're good. Nice spot for lunch if you're in the area. read more

Ambiance: The female waitress was extremely flustered, ran back and forth and constantly yelled at her colleagues in Chinese. Her son was on his scooter rolling around- the restaurant was full. Service: Don't expect any. The bad food and ambiance did not bother me. What bother me the most is their $15 credit card minimum. My total order was $10.95 but they could care less. They said they will get charged a fee by the credit card company and wanted me to pay for that fee- this is unacceptable. The lady yelled from the back of the restaurant, "i will remember you, don't come back", meanwhile she had a restaurant full of customers. I sat at the sushi bar and the waitress seemed pretty flustered and overwhelmed the whole time when there wasn't much going on. The prices are pretty great TBH. I had 2 rolls for about $7 and nigiri by the piece was either $1 or $2; however, the Hawaiian Shrimp was a let down because the pieces were so tiny and the rice was warm. The rolls were pretty standard (I got spicy tuna & shrimp tempura) and it did it's job. So Since this is one of the closest Sushi spots near me, my wife & I, decided to give it a chance. I am not going to tell you that it was the best sushi spot around, because that would be a lie. But we went on a Friday night & unlike others who have reviewed this restaurant, we found the fish to be pretty fresh. We have now gone on 2 different Fridays. No complaints on the freshness here. Perhaps they have corrected all the previous errors. To start, the fact that they give you the option of having brown rice for your rolls is a nice healthy alternative. I am a person who is trying to start eating a bit healthier & this was great! The price (3 rolls for $10) was decent - considering the area. My wife & I both both love & highly recommend the Chicken Teriyaki. It comes in a sizzling plate & the Chicken & Onions are well seasoned & delicious! The decor is pretty cool, they have wood benches with cushions in the booths which gives you a different ambiance than the average Sushi spots. On both Fridays, it wasn't packed & I would consider it a nice spot to take a date on. Plus there is always parking out front or nearby. The wait staff is very good in the fact that they leave you alone to your conversation & know when/if they should come interrupt. They refill or serve & leave you alone quickly. This is something I always appreciate. For dessert, I have fallen prey to the lure of the Bean Ice Cream! I know, i know, when I first heard "Bean Ice Cream" - I was like, "WTF!" ~ But after trying it, it has now become my favorite. As I got out of the subway, all hot from a dance class, the only thing I wanted to eat was sushi, and since this place was right in front of me, I decided to go in and order takeout. My standard spicy tuna roll was going to come as chopped up tuna, so I had to ask them to make an inside out roll with a whole piece ot tuna with spicy mayo. It really wasn't as bad as the other people were saying about this place. I'm still here to type this review, so I assume there was nothing wrong with the fish. The tuna was soft, and tasted good. I also got a small avocado roll, which was good. The ginger was quite pink, but whatever. They are CHEAP though! One dollar for any single piece of sushi is cheap. All the rolls were recently decreased by a dollar each, and if you order three rolls, the'll charge you 9.95. Not a bad deal. Not the best sushi ever, but certainly not the worst. read more

I am shocked at all the negative reviews. For 20 bucks what more are you expecting? All you can eat sushi is a hard thing to find in queens and this place is great! Their spicy white tuna is delicious - and the first time I actually preferred it over regular spicy tuna. If you're starving and craving sushi this place is awesome. Ignore the bad reviews, the menu is not limited WHATSOEVER. It's got about 40 rolls to choose from if memory serves, nothing too crazy but you always feel like you're getting the better end of the deal. Every time I've come here I've left so full I can barely walk. Yes, the rolls are a little heavy on the rice but who cares - leave the excess rice on the plate. Anyway the service is horrible the food is mediocre and not that fresh which is scary because they obviously serve raw seafood, not to mention I seen roaches crawling on the counter top twice which the owner explained that the exterminator has just left so she continued to smack the roach away. The price was $22 or $23 per person which was kinda steep for the type of sushi they offered on their AYCE sushi menu... The service was GREAT! The waiter was very attentive to everything we needed. I came here for my lunch break around 12:45 pm. The place was pretty busy. There were about two people waiting for take out orders, several tables occupied, and only 1, yes, 1 waitress. She was also the cashier. I opted to dine in for lunch taking my chances that perhaps there was more staff in the back helping her. But to my disappointment, there was no one else. I waited about 10 minutes before I got hot tea and miso soup. Thereafter, I waited another 25-30 minutes before the waitress told me they got my order wrong. At that point, I asked for my meal to go and wanted to get out of this place. Lunch is a time where people want to get their food as quickly as possible and go. I've been to other sushi places where I would've finished eating at this point. I ordered the salmon teriyaki lunch box. It had the smallest serving of salmon I had EVER eaten from a bento box. Came here as a side thought one day walking past and glad I did. I take my wife here about twice a month and really enjoy it. It's a quiet restaurant that is clean and well maintained. The waitresses are always friendly. They don't speak the best English, but enough to get by which is fine. They can be a little bit on the slow side, but not too bad. The sushi is very inexpensive (typically get three rolls for $10). Reading some of the other reviews, apparently they have expanded their menu a bit recently because there are over 20 different rolls to choose from (in the 3 for $10 section) in addition to another 15-20 specialty rolls for only a little bit more money. Quite a few other entrees to choose from as well. I'd recommend to anybody. read more
