Every week they have a $5 handroll special! This week it was eel - super worth! It was indeed a lot of rice though. The mango salmon was fresh and flavorful! The yellowtail was as well. The spicy scallop had too much mayo; it overpowered the taste of the scallop. Total came out to ~$40 for 4 handrolls.

We really loved the Matsunori in Boston and was exciting learning that there was an NYC location. They took reservations and it was easy to book, even for a Friday evening. The service was attentive, serving the handrolls one-by-one and coming back to take our next order. It was very well-paced. The standout handrolls were the spicy scallop and the miso butter cod. Perfect spot for a date night and would be coming back again to fulfill the sushi/handroll craving!

Cozy and ambient interior, great for catching up with friends or date. Impressed with the fish to rice ratio, it felt like 70:30 which really allows you to taste the fish youre eating. Rolls aren't very filling and kind of expensive. I had 4 rolls and was still hungry at the end so take that as you will. Service was kind and efficient.

Easy yummy hand rolls in LIC, came on a Sunday night close to opening and it filled up pretty quickly after we sat down. Service was lovely, even though it seems like mostly 2 people running the floor, they're doing an amazing job. They're quick, very much like omakase at table, it felt like we were getting new handrolls every 2 min. From sitting down to getting the check, 45 min. It's not a huge place but ample seating and space, good sound architecture, not crazy noisy or overstimulating. Low warm ambient lighting. We got a mix of different hand rolls. We each ended up with 4-5 rolls each and felt like we could've honestly stopped at 3, but def wanted to try everything. We felt like the portion sizes were more than fair, they pack it in with fish and we felt very full by the end. Spicy Salmon was lovely, salmon quality was very fresh and the sauce brought out nice flavors. Didn't love the regular Salmon handroll, for some reason the Salmon felt/tasted different, thought it was even smoked salmon at first. The Scallop was nice, good quality, felt like the toppings could've worked better to bring out the sweet butter flavors of scallop more. The Uni was nice, MP (19.50 the day we went) Quality was good but again wish they worked a little more with the details to bring out the uni flavors a bit more. It was getting a bit muted for me. My friend loved the Shrimp tempura and the Wagyu, good balanced flavors and nice textures. We had the Yellowtail last and at that point was so full so wasn't vibing as much but they def pack in the yellowtail, I liked the idea of the rice puffs for texture but not sure if the bite felt fully right ~ Overall quality of the fish, seaweed and rice 8/10 Could work on bringing out some lighter complimentary textures/flavors but could also be my personal preference :))

Had a delightful quick dinner at Matsunori, and I was excited to share the experience! While the handrolls are not very cheap, they definitely fill you up given the size; this is especially true for the specialty rolls which are in the $10-11 range per item! The restaurant was not too busy on a random weeknight, so service was prompt. The servers also kept the appetizer and handrolls at a good pace throughout!

Decided to try this new place last weekend and it was so good! The rolls came out fast and service was super friendly and attentive! Some rolls were ~$18 which is pretty pricey. I ordered: - A5 wagyu: 4/5 Super tender and flavorful but it didn't blow me away. - Miso Cod: 5/5 This was absolute favorite! The cod was so buttery, flavorful, and perfectly flaky. - Spicy crab: 3/5 Creamy and well-seasoned but seemed pretty average. - Spicy tempura shrimp 4/5 Loved the crunch of the shrimp and you definitely got a kick from the spice. - Spicy Scallop: 4/5 The scallop was fresh and melted in your mouth. So delicious. Overall, the food was delicious and the service was great! However, I do think the prices are steep and not sure if I would be willing to pay that price again.

Very good selection of handrolls, albeit they were very expensive. 5 handrolls costed around $89 with tax and tip, and it was not super filling. The quality of ingredients was definitely top notch but I think the combination of ingredients did not mesh well together. Miso butter cod was super flavorful, but the toro was a less fattier cut (Expected o toro for the price) and did not add much flavor. The shrimp tempura was super messy with all the flavor combinations, the wagyu was nothing special. The scallop was good with the yuzu salt though to bring out the fish. Overall, the handrolls were pretty but the price does not match the taste

Unfortunately my return visit to Matsunori was a flop. Service was kind but the food was simply not up to par. The most expensive roll I ordered was a complete let down as the toro seemed to be straight from the freezer (way too cold). Probably will not be going back a third time.

All the hand rolls I got were great. Definitely yummy, but it is very much on the pricy side. From just these 3 handrolls alone, I spent ~$50 (including tax and tip). I wasn't full unfortunately. Interior was cute, and the service was good. I don't know if I'd come back only for the price point.

What an incredible addition to Long Island City! This sushi hand roll spot completely blew me away. From the moment I walked in, the attention to detail was clear--clean, minimalist space, super friendly staff, and an atmosphere that lets the food speak for itself. The hand rolls? Absolutely next-level. The fish was incredibly fresh--melt-in-your-mouth quality--and each roll was made to order with precision and care. The presentation was beautiful too, with a focus on simplicity and balance that really highlights the quality of the ingredients. You can tell they care about what they're serving, and it makes all the difference. Every bite was delicious, from the crisp nori to the perfectly seasoned rice. Whether you're a sushi lover or just looking for a standout meal in LIC, this place is a must-try. Spicy Scallop and miso cod were my favorites

This place has to be my all time favorite handroll place in queens right now. Everything was super fresh and the presentation was really simple and clean as well. My boyfriend and I stopped by on a whim one day due to a sudden sushi craving and I do have to say, I think we got lucky getting a table on the spot because the restaurant filled up soon after (definitely understood why after we started eating). We got a couple of rolls to try: The Eel Handroll was nicely smoky. The Botan Ebi Ikura Handroll had a very nice crunch from the sweet shrimp and was lightly fishy from the ikura (not overpowering). The A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Handroll was good but it was definitely one that I could've skipped. However, the Uni Handroll saved that set. The Uni was perfectly buttery and creamy and it was nicely sweet. The Blue Crab Handroll was just okay, I might just prefer my crab to be warm so it could just be a preference thing. The Spicy Scallop Handroll was super fresh. I love scallops so I really enjoyed this one especially since the scallops were lightly sweet however, I do wish the chucks of scallops were a little bigger. And last but not least the Toro Mushroom Handroll. I just want to start off with I do not like tuna or mushrooms, we ordered this handroll specifically for my boyfriend but it was my favorite out of all of the handrolls we ordered. We ended the night on a crème brûlée which was also perfect! The food was great, the staff was great, the vibes were great, this place will definitely be my go to Handroll place in queens! Also, one thing I really appreciated was it did not feel like these handrolls were just stuffed with rice. The rice to fish ratio was very generous.

Tasty and fresh handrolls! Staff was friendly and explained the menu, and suggested about 4-5 handrolls per person. I ordered: - Mango salmon - Yellowtail - Miso butter cod - Snow crab - Toro jelly My favorites were the toro jelly and miso butter cod. The snow crab was pretty good too. They definitely don't skimp on the fish! It was a bit on the pricier side though as each one ranged from $7-$17. No reservations, walk in only. Would definitely come back

Dashi Okume sells ... you guessed it ... dashi. They sell several kinds, and you can taste all of them there in the shop before deciding which to take home with you (I tried them all and went home with one bag of vegetable dashi and one bag of sweet shellfish dashi). They also make custom-made dashi. You can choose from around 30 ingredients - dried fish, seaweed, mushrooms, and vegetables. They grind it up and put into individual bags for you. Such a fun idea, but I thought I should try some of their pre-made dashi options before creating mine own. They also sell miso, rice, noodles, rice seasoning, seaweed, tea, and other items. I picked up some Japanese mustard, seaweed, and rice seasoning to take home with my dashi. Beyond being a great shop, they also have a cafe area where they offer a teishoku set meal - you pick your fish, which comes with tea, rice, miso soup, pickles, and sides. They also offer an omakase popup. The shop is beautiful, and the service was very friendly and helpful. I'll certainly return for more shopping but next time I plan to make a meal of it and try their teishoku set.

Simple and satisfying on the food front, for the 2 of us, the cost was about $110. So not a cheap meal, but good food. The vibe though was a little different from what I was expecting. I went in thinking restaurant and what I got was more of a market atmosphere. While you are eating, people are walking around shopping and browsing, and there are products displayed and sold throughout the space. Not exactly my ideal setting for a sit down meal, but it works well enough for a casual weekend afternoon stop. One of the highlights beyond the food were the soup broths and dried flake samples they had available to try at Dashi Okume. We worked our way through most of them and they were genuinely delicious. My wife liked them enough to buy one to use as a miso soup base at home, which says a lot. They also carry items for cats, which was a fun little surprise. As for the place itself, Dashi Okume is located on Norman Avenue and operates as a collective, meaning it is not one single business but rather a shared space where multiple different vendors and businesses come together under one roof. That explains the market within a restaurant feeling. Overall Dashi Okume is a worthwhile stop, especially if you enjoy exploring and sampling along the way. Just go in knowing it is more of a hybrid experience than a traditional sit down meal.

It was pretty quiet inside, outside of the TV playing somewhat loud highlights from the World Cup on loop (why,) with the servers and staff being helpful and friendly. In comparison to the other pick-your-own seafood spots like AbuQir or Hamido, the spices are a tad lighter here, being almost closer to Astoria Seafood, minus the olive oil. I didn't mind, though, as the fish was all fresh and perfectly prepared. To drink, our table stuck with water, though there are a few mocktails and some sodas, including some Algerian ones. They put down some simple bread with a bit of garlic and herbs, which was refilled. For non-seafood dishes, we had a few. The first was the $8 Hmiss, or Hammis, a dip made with roasted pepper, tomato, and garlic sautéed in olive oil. The warm dish was earthy and garlicky, and went perfectly with the bread, with the flavor reminding me of a warmer version of some Turkish eggplant dips. There was also the Peasant Salad for $12, with cucumber, tomato, red onion, and Kalamata olives topped with feta, oregano, and dill. If you're familiar at all with Horiatiki/Village salad, it's basically the same thing, though with crumbled feta instead of a block, and it was refreshing and tasty. Finally, we eventually got an $8 side order of Basil Garlic Mashed Potatoes, which were decent. The first seafood to arrive at the table was the $16.99 Algerian Sardines, which consisted of sardines from Morocco with a spice mixture. The man in front recommended them fried, and the portion was nice, and the flavor was excellent. The fish was fried perfectly, with the bones fried enough that the entirety of it could be eaten. This was delicious, and one of the highlights of the meal. As we loved these sardines, we eventually got a small order of the other option, the "Marinated Sardines" from Spain. These were a bit more expensive by weight, being $10.56 for 0.48 pounds, but by comparison, these were much flatter and larger. The half pound consisted of three large pieces, which were broken down and divided among the group. While I slightly preferred the spices from the Algerian version, I liked the texture of these more, as they were more meaty. I don't think you can go wrong with either, as both were excellent. There was also one pound of Mussels for $17.99, which was available in one of two cooking preparations, Moules Marinière or a version with tomato sauce, herbs, and feta. I went with the latter, and they were excellent, with all of the mussels being open. The feta added a unique, slightly salty touch, with the broth being delicious. They had brought us out some extra bread, and we made good use of it. If I were here alone, I might have this along with some sardines and leave very happy. We also got two whole fish, which were both ordered grilled and butterflied. First was the Dorado, or Orata, for $29.24 for 1.54 pounds. As is typical for this fish, it was delicate and light, but had plenty of flavor. The other was the American Red Snapper, which was a bit more expensive at $37.90 for 1.58 pounds. By comparison, this fish was a lot thicker and therefore, a bit more flavorful. We enjoyed both, with a slight preference going towards the cheaper fish for most outside of me and one other. Another highlight was the Scallops for $37.23 for 0.98 pounds, which came out to 14 large pieces. As recommended, we got these sautéed, with the scallops coming in a delicious garlicky juice on the bottom with plenty of other herbs. The scallops were tender while staying plump, though I slightly preferred the more caramelized tops at AbuQir, with these having a more uniform texture. The rest of the people liked what I couldn't eat, the $24.99 Octopus for around half a pound. The octopus came out pre-cut, which made splitting it very easy. I can't comment much on the flavor or saltiness as some other reviewers brought up, or else I'd be in the hospital right now post-anaphylaxis, but people liked it a lot. If you don't want to bother with the lines or crowds at the other fish spots, I would highly recommend going here. The fish is fresh, perfectly prepared, and seasoned just enough to highlight the natural flavors. I would go back.
