We originally made a resso for 7 people for 12 on Sunday. We weren't able to make it until 1:30 so we called ahead and luckily they were too busy that day and were able to accommodate. We wanted to do omakase so we took over the sushi bar (which fits about 8). For $90, you get 16 courses. I can't remember all the pieces we ate but I do remember that my favorite pieces included the sweet shrimp (especially the fried shrimp head), wagyu, uni with caviar, fatty yellowtail, scallop, and monkfish liver. I think this was my first time trying monkfish liver and it was great. It's rich but it came served with some kind cucumber mango lime salsa, which sounds like a weird pairing but it just worked. They also kept the sake flowing for us, which made for a fun brunch. From the outside, it looks like a regular sushi takeout place, but don't sleep on the omakase! read more

I ordered for pick up after one of my friends recommended it to me and boy, the fish was very fresh and it was at an affordable price! They are not on any food delivery apps yet but there's a lot of parking in the area if you want to drop in for a meal or pick up. My fiancé and I stopped by for a Sunday lunch and we did the party tray D (cash only). We opted for the angry bird roll, Toro scallion and it did not disappoint. It was so good we came back with our friends to get their omakase and we had a good time, eating and drinking the night away. The uni toast, botan ebi, tuna and Toro was my favorite! Sushi Akio has always been a solid sushi place when I'm having cravings and I always find myself ordering their lunch specials (every day until 4pm) from time to time. Currently it's around $14 for 3 rolls (with your choice of soup or salad), but I still think it's a decent price compared to other places. My go-to rolls are the Alaskan roll, eel avocado, and yellowtail. I usually get takeout more often than eating in because it's a small spot that can get busy. I've ordered from them over the course of many years and the food and service has been pretty consistent, as well. read more

Wanted to get quick sushi take out to celebrate a fam members' birthday but didn't want to dine out at an AYCE spot. Sushi wasn't WOW but also wasn't bad. Total for about 9 rolls (mix of regular, fancy, and deluxe) and 2 sushi Deluxe boxes came out to around $170. The fish didn't taste exactly fresh but also we were glad no one got sick after the meal. I have been here a few times since the summer began and I must say even though Steven is away on vacation his staff took great pride and care in delivering tasty sushi as usual. I ordered some of the specials of the day which were California Uni, Chu Toro, and Sweet Shrimp. The chef gave me a complimentary special of the mango salad and I was thoroughly pleased very sweet and juicy mango titillating the taste buds yummy! I also really enjoyed the special sauce they put on the scallop roll reminds me of the Marilyn Monroll Yasu used to make at his spot wow! The eel was tasty as well and fatty just the way I like it with the just the right amount of eel sauce. The miso soup was hot as usual and the green tea smooth way to swallow it all down. All in all had a great time with great service and food to match. I highly recommend this place hopefully they will add Omakase to the menu one day eventually. I'm looking forward to my next visit to see what they have in store. I highly recommend this place for dining in or takeout they also offer delivery as well enjoy! For Omakase of $70, this is highly recommended. It doesn't come with very fancy or rare fish. But the quality of fish is fresh and you will have you pay over $150-$200 if eating in Manhattan. An early dinner bell wrang out the tune of 'Its Too Early to Hit the Sake', so I opted for green tea instead and unlike the Sake, refills are free. Soft Shelled Crab Tempura sounded good in theory, but one little crab atop a mountain of crispy fried vegetable clearly did not seem like enough, he needed a friend. Crazy Spicy Tuna Roll, perhaps in screwing up the title a smidge, had a pale pinkish tuna slab, considerably thick but pale pinkish, I wanted magenta, mauve and fuschia. Spider Roll was a bit of a bore as the spiders legs tasted similar to the legs of my little crabby from the prior dish. Why I always need to order an Eel related item? Its actually a very logical reason but too nostalgic for the purposes of my review. read more

Honestly the best sushi I've ever had. I am vegetarian and usually stick to veggie rolls, veggie tempura, miso soup, and some edamame as my go to meal choices. Their sweet potato roll was especially fantastic- it is lightly fried before being made into the roll and once added with soy sauce and a touch of wasabi, it is truly unbelievable. I live in UES and ordered take out from here while visiting a friend, but would honestly come back to forest hills and order a weeks worth of the sweet potato rolls to take back to the city. In addition to this, I was happy they fully cooked the edamame pods unlike most restaurants. They were soft and easy to bite into and not overly salted. The miso soup, avocado rolls, and tempura were all wonderful and delicious too. Can't wait to be back. read more

While I have read many reviews that the sushi is fresh, I've witnessed firsthand their presentation certainly lacks. I tried the new Bamboo Ya before Sushi Akio and thought Bamboo Ya was highly priced but their sushi was fresh and presentation was fantastic, as well as large rolls...so felt like I got my money's worth. Ordered three rolls for $17 here. Eel avocado, spicy salmon and salmon avocado. My husband said the fish was fresh but the pieces of the roll were disappointing. They look like it was made by me rather than a professional. Uneven, lacking fish in certain pieces. You can see it in my picture of how the pieces varied greatly. There was one piece where it was so sad, there was barely any fish in it! While it is fresh, I prefer to have my sushi rolls be more consistent throughout. I would go here because it's closer when I want to have it but don't mind trekking out to Austin Street if it's the same price. Also gave us the tiniest piece of wasabi. Not enough to share for two people. Perhaps they are better known for omakase than roll specialty which I can certainly respect! read more

This place used to be good. Now it's not good. Pre Covid, I would go and enjoy the food. Understandably, they did not open for dining for a long time after lock downs lifted. I went in for 2 thing's yesterday and I was really surprised at the price and then when I opened up my bag, I www even more surprised by the quality of the food. I ordered a spicy yellowtail roll and tamago sashimi. It came out to $21.50. I was told that there would be 5 pieces of the egg omlette w the order/ that was a little confusing. I opened the box and saw the they scrambled 2 eggs, added soy and mirin and cut it into 5 pieces. It was not tamago. The yellowtail roll was sloppy and broke apart in the box. The owner does a great job at utilizing the space and making a portion of the area almost like a sushi bar concept where you can watch him make the food. There aren't enough good things to say about Sushi Akio. My one and only experience was not a good one... it was a great one. Came here with the gf because we were hungry and didn't feel like doing the usual pizza. The first thing I noticed was that they had omakase. It was surprising since the place is exceptionally small and not really located in the commercial heart of forest hills (Austin Street.) What was even better is that they list the price for the omakase and there are three you can choose from, $30, $40, $50. The omakase that I was served was the absolute best value for money. I got the $30 one and I felt like it was worth at least $80. The sushi was delicious and creative. At one point I was served a sushi on a pringles bbq chip. This might not sound appetizing at first, but the flavors were awesome. The creativity and sheer volume of sushi I was served was impressive. If you find yourself in forest hills, don't deprive yourself of the omakase at Sushi Akio. You'll be glad you stopped in. read more

I live in the neighborhood and remember when this place used to be on Austin but have for a few years resided here. I know a few people who ordered from here before and liked their meal. I too have gone here once but complained that their lunch special rolls are tiny in size and wasn't too thrilled with their response. I have this place a try again and ordered the three lunch rolls special and I have to admit, it was plentiful and tasted alright. I got the shrimp tempura roll, spicy salmon, and salmon avocado rolls. No complaints with the freshness. The only minor complaint I had was their accompanying salad tasted a tad frozen. I would suggest keeping those nice refrigerator temperature. All in all, 3 stars based on my last visit. read more

Grabbed take-out from Sushi Akio on Saturday afternoon. The best sushi I have had in the area, and even more impressive that it came from take-out. Quality: During our quarantine, the one constant craving has been for sushi. And so we decided to try out Sushi Akio, one of the few places still open in the area. We ordered big, but managed to finish everything in one sitting. We started with a pretty standard Seaweed Salad and a fresh Salmon Avocado Roll. The Shrimp Tempura Roll was solid, with the end pieces being the best bite. The Angry Bird Roll with spicy crunch scallop, tuna, avocado, cilantro, salmon, and roe was an excellent choice. The mix of items worked well together, and the texture was great. The Little Delicious Roll was my personal favorite, a deep fried roll with crab, spicy tuna, cream cheese, cucumber, and avocado. And the mix of sushi with a tuna roll in the Sushi Deluxe is just an easy go-to when you can't decide. Quantity: A big order, especially with the Sushi Deluxe. Each item is pretty standard in size, and we were able to share the larger deluxe rolls. Value: $5 for the Seaweed Salad. $6 for the Salmon Avocado Roll. $6 for the Shrimp Tempura Roll. $15 for the Angry Bird Roll. $10 for the Little Delicious Roll. $26 for the Sushi Deluxe. The restaurant is located in a small row of shops along Yellowstone Blvd. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, I only got to peek inside through a makeshift takeout window, but this is a place that looks great for an omakase meal. The sushi bar is at the center of the space, and a front row seat to the show would guarantee a good time. Hope to visit soon for the full experience. Crowd: I arrived early, so as I waited around I saw a few folks grab their pick-up orders before me. Confused at poor ratings, wondering if those people know good sushi... Great joint, fresh fish, tasty unique rolls. My favorite is the Fruit Ninja Roll: Mango, papaya, kiwi, tuna, salmon and special sauce on top. (See picture). Took my friend and he got chefs choice, 13 pieces and he really liked all of them, especial the uni. You can really go wrong with rank uni but it was bright orange, and very fresh. Very small place though, not much seating, nothing special on the inside. Kind of dive'ish. I must discuss the Tina Gaga appetizer. It is a spicy tuna salad of the sorts on top of a Pringle chip. Yes a Pringle chip. And it is - AMAZING. During the 6th week of quarantine I've been craving sushi for weeks but nothing near me was open. My brother drove by this place and noticed it was opened. I immediately looked up their menu and called. The seafood selection was fresh and delicious (I was skeptical given what the seafood delivery would be like). This was the first time I've ever gotten scallops with a chirashi dish, it was amazing (but I wouldn't have expected crab stick so it balanced out the 12pc selection. We ordered the omakase $60 the pieces were so generous I was full after the fifth. Chef was on point and friendly. Take advantage of the byol. It's a tiny spot only 6 seats by the sushi bar so be sure to rsv 2-3 days in advance. The bathroom is behind the kitchen bit of inconvenience it looks like a hole in the wall place but none of us seemed to mind. Came here for the first time several years ago and had a great experience. The place is no-frills, a hole in the wall if you will. The person making my sushi was visible to me the entire time from where I was sitting. He was taking his time and making each roll carefully. The fish was indeed fresh and the rolls were made very creatively. I started with a miso soup that was...gasp...actually flavorful! It was rich and savory instead of being watered down like many other places. I'be ordered the New York roll, the avatar (which was amazing), the hotate masago, a spicy tuna roll and one other that I forget now. Everything was delicious and you can tell that it was made with care. I also ordered a green tea drink from the fridge but the waitress came by with warm green tea too. The staff was very friendly and I will most likely be back. The man that makes the sushi (he's there all the time) is the absolute sweetest guy ever. He takes such amazing care of his customers and remembers my friend and I every time we go there. He always offers us some thing and sits and chats for a while.
