This sushi/Japanese spot has some traditional appetizers that I used to eat at a sushi restaurant growing up that I haven't been able to find anywhere - fish and/or veggies marinated in a light vinegar sauce. It's so refreshing! They have a lot of unique traditional small plates that you don't see at a lot of sushi restaurants anymore. I loved their mackarel and salmon!! Everything I've enjoyed the service, atmosphere, and of course the food !!! The location is great for me and my family. We placed an order and if we want to stretch our legs, we walk the two blocks, really one and a half blocks to pick up our food. We do this because we like the owner and the servers to know who we are and that we come often. It's so important to do business with our local restaurants and store stores. read more

first off the food was highly over priced... they used cooked salmon instead the sashimi salmon. The service was horrible, didn't even offer us hot tea or water, but the table next to us got it, and they told us we didn't ask for it, but as soon as the couple sat next to us the waiter brought it over to them before sitting down. The staff here are always so polite and very kind and accommodating, which I appreciate first and foremost. I would say the atmosphere is friendly as well. The food here is decently good, but I need to try a few more dishes. In the image I shared, I asked for a dish that they don't have yakisoba with chicken, which was cool that they accepted my request for a custom dish! Ariyoshi Restaurant is a cozy neighborhood spot for home style Japanese food. The restaurant is a bit of a known secret for its comforting hot food and izakaya menu with certain communities. My group and I were seated quickly upon entering the restaurant by our server. Certain sections of the restaurant are not always open; as was the case when we were having lunch. Still, the section we were seated at was warmly lit, and clean. To start, my group and I ordered a couple of appetizers which were all delicious and served in good time. We particularly enjoyed the dishes from the izakaya menu. The thinly sliced carrot and burdock stir fry (gobo kimpira) had just the right amount of crunch and chew without it being too salty. The salmon collar (salmon kama) was also juicy and flavorful despite it being delicately seasoned. Of course, the takoyaki (mini octopus donuts!!) immediately disappeared when they were served to our table. The little octopus balls were pipping hot, and savory from the sauces drizzled on top. The ginger sprinkled on the takoyaki also added a nice balance to the flavor profile as well. For our main dish we all ordered fish platters (flounder, salmon, mackerel), which were served on medium trays with divided sections. Whether the fish was fried, grilled or broiled they were all good and cooked well. The old school ginger dressing for the salads also tasted fresh and bright. The bit of texture in dressing was just right too. One of the favorite things to get at Ariyoshi's is their udon. This time we tried the kitsune udon (beancurds with vegetables noodle soup) which was pretty hearty and delicious. The flavor of the broth was deep and satisfying, while the semi-thick noodles were cooked perfectly. We also appreciated how the seaweed in the soup was not overwhelming or fishy. Service was top-notch and professional despite our server working mostly alone. Also, the (gratis) warm green tea served when seated is appreciated. There was a time, not long ago where I thought Ariyoshi was not even remotely close to solid Japanese pick, let alone the best in the hood. My experiences were underwhelming and I was even a little sad knowing a Japanese owned spot was so lackluster. Fast forward a few years and I can see that they've made a change for the better: faster delivery / takeout, more efficient service, and above all, quality food. I was always somewhat lukewarm on their sushi preparation, but was pleasantly surprised to find nice chunks of fresh fish during my last go-around. My chirashi bowl was nicely packed with vibrant colors, and was plentiful portion wise. I also have high regard for their hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) and think their beef negimaki roll is underrated. I'm not sure if they're still rocking the green tea soba, but I really thought that was a standout dish. Their sushi, gyoza, and hot udon based dishes are somewhere in the middle for me. On some days it's pretty good and on others it's a bit lacking. I didn't have the best experience with their spicy mentaiko pasta or the agedashi tofu. I recognize that these blips are not consistent enough for me to be completely turned off, but they are leaps and bounds ahead of where they once were. I still think the staff is courteous and good at getting folks what they want. They've done a good job with the social distancing when indoor dining was still a thing but I think their takeout / delivery game is definitely on point. I read about the quick eats that is available during the weekend outside of this Japanese restaurant. Note: the restaurant is open for dine-in and takeout though I was going for a snack. The 3 items: Japanese savory pancake (also called Okonomiyaki) for $6, Pan-fried noodles for $4 (Yaki-soba), and yakitori for $2. I have been wanting a Okonomiyaki. They made it fresh on a outdoor flat top grill. Forgot to take a picture while it was being cooked. The outside is crispy (loved the crispiness) and typed with various topping. I'm sorry but this needs to be said. The food here has declined so much the past couple of years. The freshness and quality, isn't what it used to be. I came for lunch with my boyfriend and the bill came out to $99 after only ordering a few sushi rolls and salmon sashimi. The dragon roll is almost 14$ but there was literally no eel, I'll post the picture below but this is not acceptable. It's laughable and quite honestly kind of scammy. I haven't been to this Japanese restaurant since 2018. The service and food were both on par. However, I was a bit disappointed that the check-in offer wouldn't be honored. They should just take it off of yelp. Also, when we asked for the check, they tacked on more the the bill. I always take a look at my bill now and glad that I did. They put that I ordered more than I did and asked them to take if off. After taking if off the bill, it was so much less. I was super excited to order from this place, as it's really close to home, so convenient, right? I ordered the shoyu ramen without the pork - I understand the price is still the same, that's fine. I asked instead if they could just make it spicy, they said fine. The total was $14.70. Cool. Now the girl tells me they have a min of $15. I told her, it's fine. I don't want to order anything else, just charge me an even 15. Tell me how they ended up charging me OVER $15 ... when the order was less to begin with? I also even was giving them the difference and they had the nerve. BEYOND disappointed. Off to the WORST start. The order arrived and the only good thing I can say is, it was warm. The presentation was awful. The noodles were crammed into a styrofoam container with the toppings, which was barely able to fit that and the broth was in a large plastic container. What if I wasn't home? How was I supposed to mix the two? There was nowhere to combine the ingredients at all. I asked for spicy when I requested no pork and the girl said no problem and because I'll pay the extra to meet the minimum she'd include extra peppers. There was no spice added to the broth as requested at all. Everything aside from the broth was also quite raw. Can't say I'd recommend. I try to order from local businesses directly. I'm a big fan of their cooked food! I'm sure their sushi and sashimi are fine but I only tried it once and thought it was pretty standard but not outstanding. Since mid-March, I've been working from home and have been lucky to try all the local places for lunch. I used to work out of Dumbo and it didn't have a lot of great lunch options that were reasonably priced. Ariyoshi has so many different cooked lunch options and it's priced well. My husband and I have tried their $5.99 lunch bowls (similar in quality to some of those to-go Japanese marts by Grand Central), the grilled tilapia with garlic and ginger, and chicken curry over rice. All solid options! Their miso soup is notable with a broth that's slightly heartier. I'm looking forward to trying more of their items! read more

The salad that came out had this think clumpy dressing like resembled the waste out of a juicer. The skewers were ok but the SUSHI tasted old and stall. The rice was dry and tough and tasted old and the sushi was not fresh. We're not the type to leave anything on plate but i don't think we even got through half. For 66 dollars it is not worth it. I have been eating here for many years. It is a nice casual place that has nice variety of food. Their Sushi is sometimes good but sometimes not so much. And the same goes to other food. It almost seem like they have 2 different class of chefs in kitchen that they alternate the shift. Service is always good, but my favorite thing about this restaurant is the "Ikebana" (flower arrangement) they exhibit in the back corner of restaurant. I give this place 5 stars because I come here all the time, and what I order is always very good; however, I only get basic dishes like salads/soups and vegetarian rolls (vegetable roll, sweet potato roll, avocado roll, etc). I'm not rating the overall menu. I can't opine of the quality of sushi here. The service is great, the servers are super friendly. I left a review 2 years ago because i'm a loyal customer- and I came back multiple times recently and today I decided to leave a review. Their Spicy Mentaiko Pasta that i got today made me sick. I tasted sour and fishy taste as soon as I took the first bite. I took few more bites and my husband also tried a bite and we decided to throw it out. I used to come here all the time years ago. This place always reminded me of weird warm sushi pieces, plus over cooked salmon. They had always had a large menu which you would spend a lot studying to find exactly what you wanted for dinner. Their menu's used to be created by hand. Fast forward to now the ambiance is still the same and they still have a large menu but they are professionally done. The service has always been very friendly and quick. I have to say that their cooked food has gotten a lot better. We ordered their standard sushi dinner and sushi and chicken teriyaki bento box. Their sushi to me was just OK but the chicken teriyaki was delicious. Now that it's getting colder out this place for me is great for appetizers and noodle soup. read more

Here is all the food our table ordered: Sushi regular with California roll Sushi regular with Tuna roll Spicy salmon with avocado roll Tuna roll Stir fry plain udon noodles Regular coke Diet coke Seltzer with lemon This all came up to a total of $67.00 between 3 people. The tofu soup that comes with the sushi regular is very fresh and delicious! Big chunks of tofu in it! The place is very spacious and clean. Our waiter and waitress were very nice! We didn't have room for dessert. My daughters udon noodles were comfort food delicious. Nice, warm, savory and gooey is how I would describe them. This is an excellent place to go to dinner. A hankering for sushi led me to the battlefield that is this review section. One of the most amusingly polarizing restaurants I've seen in recent memory, Ariyoshi sits in a convenient location just off the 7 train line--where I happened to emerge from when I decided to demystify this restaurant. The ambiance is neat, orderly, and easy on the eyes. But while interior design is nice, we are here for food first and foremost. In that regard, I was pleasantly surprised. The sashimi is tasty and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes raw fish dishes. The onigiri is equally as yummy--it's warm and tangy, though lacking in enough meat on the inside. The Sunnyside roll and the dipping soba is a must try here. I love the appetizer menu which includes lotus roots, mushroom dishes etc which are things yoy won't find at other Japanese places. Ariyoshi is the hot sushi spot of Sunnyside, as TJ Sushi is to Woodside. Whether the latter or the former will win in a face-off for best sushi, that's for you to decide and me to know. I came here with a friend on a Friday night and though I initially wanted sushi, I was sold in after seeing the ramen noodles as advertised in the storefront--I really craved ramen at this point. After a good 20 minutes of sitting down and circling around the menu, and questioning whether my wants/needs are logical between multiple sushi rolls, donburi, udon noodles (it's a girl thing, trust me), I finally went with the Tonkotsu Ramen and the Lobster Salad Roll. I was highly anticipating on the Lobster Salad Roll to be as exquisite as TJ Sushi's over-the-top presentation. Instead, I got 6 mere minimal, tiny, plain (I don't expect pizzazz and a million different exotic sauces drizzled like art, but come on, it's a "Special Roll"--at least make it more presentable if it's your specialty) rolls that hardly had any lobster meat in its mixture, and was not delightful in taste. For $6, it was definitely a rip-off. Needless to say, it was disappointing and I don't think I will order any of their sushi rolls again because I can only expect small, effortless portions. I was ready to give up and expect the worst for my ramen, but the Tonkotsu Ramen did restore the sanctity and any hope I had left in this restaurant. The broth was just excellent and it was light but flavorful, and the pork was so good! After the whole deal with the sushi roll, I was surprised that the portions of the noodles were huge. We were about to go for dessert but was the told the portions are very small--you will only get one scoop of ice cream for $4.50--no thanks. Service was average; it was more like rushing us to order on a slow night, but they were quite honest about the food and portions.
